Meet The Bulldogs
A Look Back At Georgia Cross Country In 2012 Bulldogs Post Historic Finish At NCAAs LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- The Georgia men’s cross country team finished 19th for its best finish in program history at the NCAA Cross Country Championships run around the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., on November 17, 2012. The Bulldogs scored 466 points as Oklahoma State captured the NCAA title with 72 points. Wisconsin (135), Colorado (158), Northern Arizona (191) and Florida State (238) finished second through fifth, respectively. Georgia’s previous top finish at the national meet was 25th at both the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Championships. This marked the fourth time the Bulldogs had raced at the NCAA meet and the second time in as many years. They had the Southeastern Conference’s top finish in 2011 (29th) and were second from the SEC this season. “This was very exciting to see our men come away with the best finish in the history of the University of Georgia,” said Bulldog distance coach Patrick Cunniff. “It’s a testament to how hard this team has worked and how great our seniors have been in their final season. Matt (Cleaver), Brian (Detweiler) and Brett (Richardson) have been the heart and soul of this team all year. They may not have had the individual glory today, but they worked hard for the team and made this finish happen. We beat some of the best distance-dedicated programs in the country and to be in the top 20 in any NCAA sport is a great accomplishment.” The Lady Bulldogs finished 30th (642) in their first trip to the NCAA meet since 2007. Oregon (114) won the meet as Providence (183), Stanford (198), Florida State (202) and Michigan (247) rounded out the top five. The Lady Bulldogs have now run at the NCAA Championships eight times. The team’s first appearance was in 1990. The Lady Bulldogs finished a program-best ninth place that year. “The women were excited to be (in Louisville) and I think it was a great accomplishment for them to advance to the NCAA Championships,” said Cunniff. “They ran hard and competed well. I think they were a little fatigued from two hard races at SECs and Regionals, probably still emotionally drained. But the whole team, especially seniors Morgan VanGorder and Leslie Boozer, showed great determination. They showed poise throughout the race. Morgan and Leslie competed as well as they have their entire career.” For the men, four of the Bulldog’ first five scorers improved on their 2011 finishes. Senior Brett Richardson bettered his 228th-place finish last year to lead the team with a 96th-place finish in 2012. Richardson registered a time of 30:41.1 to break into the top 100. “Brett had an amazing run,” Cunniff said. “He is someone who got in the race and found his rhythm. I thought he ran the back half of the race as well as anyone. All three of our seniors represented their school in a great fashion and should all be very proud about their final performances.” Second to finish for Georgia was junior Brandon Lord, who topped his teammates with a third-place finish at the

UGA Distance Coach Patrick Cunniff Patrick Cunniff
Bulldog Cross Country Coach Second Season
Patrick Cunniff joined the Bulldog staff in August 2012. He is guiding UGA’s cross country competitors and the rest of Georgia’s middle-distance runners. Cunniff wasted little time making his presence known across the Southeastern Conference and then the nation during the 2012 cross country season. The Bulldog men matched their best finish in history at the SEC Championships (second) before automatically qualifying for their second consecutive invite to the NCAA Championships thanks to a runner-up finish at the NCAA South Regionals. Georgia wrapped up its season by taking 19th at Nationals, marking the best finish in school history. The Lady Bulldogs also surged to their first trip to the NCAA meet since 2007 during Cunniff’s first year at the helm. The Georgia women arrived at the NCAA South Regionals ranked fifth, but answered the challenge with a third-place finish, the team’s best showing in five years, to grab an at-large bid to Nationals. This marked the first time that both the Georgia men and women had advanced to the NCAA Championships during the same season since 2004 and only the second time in history. Cunniff walked away from his first season with a school record eight All-Region performers and five runners who were on one of the All-SEC squads. A native of North Kingstown, R.I., Cunniff came to UGA after serving five years as Long Beach State’s cross country and assistant track coach from 2007-12. His distance runners highlighted Cunniff’s final season with the 49ers by winning a conference individual championship in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Each one of these titles came with a school record performance at the respective conference meets. In addition to helping lead Long Beach to 2008 and 2011 Big West Conference men’s outdoor team championships, Cunniff put together an impressive resume with the 49ers. He watched his distance runners set school records 25 times, coached seven studentathletes to the NCAA Preliminary Round and led five to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. In the classroom, his runners earned CoSIDA All-Academic team honors from 2007-11. Cunniff guided Matt Maldonado to an Olympic Trials “A” Standard time of 3:37.68 in the 1500 meters and 3:59.08 in the mile to qualify for NCAA indoors, which marked the first sub-4:00 mile in school history. Maldonado went on to advance to the semifinals of the Trials. Another individual, Kip Kangogo, recorded two wins and a runner-up finish at the Canadian Nationals after being instructed by Cunniff. Cunniff also was responsible for administrative duties including all aspects of team travel for the 49ers. He also started the Pyramid 5k and assisted in numerous fundraising and community outreach events for Long Beach. Getting his collegiate coaching start in the state of Texas, Cunniff spend two years coaching at Texas Christian University (2004-
Patrick Cunniff, shown above with his wife Katie and daughter Casidy, returned in 2012 to coach the distance corps at his alma mater. 06). Similar to his years at Long Beach, his resume was quickly filled with numerous accolades. Cunniff coached seven NCAA Division I Championship qualifiers (three cross country, one indoor track, three outdoor track), guided his team members to 12 individual conference championships and coached student-athletes who set school records four times. Cunniff directed the Horned Frogs to a runner-up finish at the 2004 Conference USA Championships and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional, highlighted by having the individual champion on the women’s side. He also assisted in coaching Jackson Langat to the 2006 NCAA indoor 800 crown. His cross country teams maintained a GPA over 3.0 during his tenure in Fort Worth. His first coaching stop came at the University of Texas as a volunteer assistant. During his time in Austin, Cunniff worked to help the Longhorns win the 2003 and 2004 Big XII Outdoor Championships as well as the 2003 South Central Regionals in cross country. Also in 2003, the Texas track team registered a second-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. On the Texas distance side, Cunniff, who has a USATF Level I Certification, coached Brian Rue to a personal-best 1:47.21 in the 800 and qualification to the 2004 Olympic Trials. His cross country team also maintained a GPA over 3.0. Transferring to Georgia from UNC-Charlotte, Cunniff competed for the Bulldogs from the 1988 cross country season to the 1991 track and field season. He became a regular contributor for Georgia’s cross country team and made his way into the school’s all-time top-10 list in the 10,000. Cunniff graduated in June 1991 with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Cunniff and his wife, Katie, have a 2-year-old daughter named Casidy.

UGA Head Coach Wayne Norton/Support Staff
Wayne Norton
Track and Field Head Coach 15th Season
*2006 USTFCCCA South Region Women’s Coach of the Year
The 2013-14 seasons will mark Wayne Norton’s 15th year as the head track and field coach at the University of Georgia, a program he has been involved with for more than 20 years. Norton’s track and field and cross country teams won 27 All-American certificates and eight SEC individual championships combined during the 2012 cross country and 2013 track seasons. In addition, the Bulldog men and the Georgia women broke 11 school records during the indoor/outdoor track seasons last year. On the track, the Georgia men and women managed three top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championships in 2013. The Lady Bulldogs also had one national champion indoors (Shaunae Miller, 400m) and another outdoors (Freya Jones, javelin) and both of them were true freshmen. Since taking over the reins of the program in 2000, Georgia track and field teams have enjoyed tremendous success, recording 22 Top-20 finishes, including 17 Top-15 finishes and eight Top-10 finishes. Georgia has continued to keep a high standard of producing the nation’s premier collegiate track athletes. In Norton’s 14 years at the helm, Georgia athletes have earned 167 All-America certificates and 99 SEC individual titles. The 2012 Olympics in London saw 10 current or former Georgia student-athletes who competed under Norton, which was the most in an Olympic Games for UGA track and field alumni in school history. Leading the charge for UGA was Reese Hoffa, who earned a Bronze medal in the shot put during his third trip to the Games. In 2007, Norton saw his women’s track and field team grab two top-10 NCAA team finishes, a pair of NCAA titles (Jennifer DahlgrenHammer, Patricia Sylvester-High jump) and nine All-American certificates, along with a variety of academic accolades. The 2006 season was another overwhelmingly successful campaign for Georgia during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Lady Bulldogs claimed the school’s first indoor Southeastern Conference title and the women’s team also won the SEC outdoor championship. Leading the way for Norton’s squad was Dahlgren, who swept the individual national titles in the weight and hammer throws.
Norton began coaching in 1981 as a graduate assistant at Indiana. Before coming to Georgia, Norton served as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University from 1985-90. A New Jersey native, Norton receiver his bachelor’s degree in broadcast production from Howard University in 1981. He earned a master’s degree in journalism from Indiana in 1987. Norton and his wife, Priscilla, have four children: son Christian, who played football for and graduated from UGA, and daughters LaShawna, Jasmine and Erica. Norton also has a son-in-law after Andre Wilson married his daughter LaShawna. The couple have a son named Isaiah.
