Spring 2022 Preview

Bernstein’s beliefs

On the Fall Season... “We had a successful Fall. From the start of it, our goal has been to grow and get better throughout the fall – to end in a better place than we started. Across the board we definitley did that.”

On GUillermina Grant and Mell Reasco... “They both had an awesome Fall. It’s hard coming in as freshmen and adjusting, hitting the ground runnning the way that they did, but that speaks to who they are. Before they got here, they both were great competitors. They won a lot a close, three set, matches this Fall. All of Gigi’s losses came in three sets. She’s competitive, even when she is losing, and that is something we look for.”

On the Upperclassmen... “Ania (Hertel), Lea (Ma), Meg (Kowalksi) and Morgan (Coppoc) all had a great Fall. You look at Meg, we were working on a lot of things with her from the very beginning, and you can see her results get better and better throughout the Fall, which is exactly the goal we had. She had an internship with the NFL over the summer, so she didn’t get to play as much tennis as she would have liked, but she ended the Fall in a much better place."

“Morgan in her fifth and final Fall went 10-4 with some great wins, getting more solid and playing well. Ania had a great summer. For her to come in and keep it rolling throughout collegiate play was great stuff. Making the semifinals and beating the No. 2 seed at Regionals. She’s gaining momentum.”

“Lea didn’t get to play much over the summer. Her best tournament was the last tournament of the Fall – The Georgia Invitational. She posted great wins over Central Florida and Florida. Across the board it was definitly what we were looking for heading into the Spring.”

On team Impressions... “How well they’ve come together as a group. We lost three key players last year in (Katarina) Jokic, (Elena) Christofi and (Marta) Gonzalez. We replaced them with three freshmen and the team chemistry hasn’t missed a beat. These freshmen are fitting in great, and the upperclassmen are showing them the way. The fun that they are having, on and off the courts, is good to see.”

On Areas of improvements... “We are defintiley putting emphasis on Doubles. Everybody has their own things. It’s not cookie cutter, one size fits all. A lot of the girls are working on transistion as we go into indoors, playing on faster courts, playing more aggresive. Some are working on managing the flow on matches. We want to do the best we can to work on each individual task at hand than generalizaing and doing one thing as a team.“
