Closing Remarks

Friday, Jan. 10 The Case for Patient and Family Engagement: The Power of CANDOR Armando Nahum, Director, Center for Engaging Patients as Partners Martin J. Hatlie, J.D., Co-Director MedStar Health Quality, Institute for Quality and Safety

Senior hospital leaders will learn how to execute a plan called CANDOR (Communication and Optimal Resolution), a process that health care institutions and practitioners can use to respond in a timely, thorough, and just way when unexpected events cause patient harm. Additionally, renowned patient advocate Armando Nahum, founder of the GHA Josh Nahum Award for Infection Prevention, will share a study that suggests there is a positive correlation between patient-family advisory councils and hospital performance. Armando is director of the Center for Engaging Patients as Partners at MIQS. In 2006, he and his wife, Victoria, began their work in patient advocacy and engagement by establishing the Safe Care Campaign after three members of their family became infected in three different hospitals in three different states in 10 months’ time, culminating with the death of their son, Josh, when he was only 27 years old. The Nahums use their family tragedy to inspire and educate hospital administrations, frontline caregivers and all who work in the continuum of care. The Nahums launched the Healthcare and Patient Partnership Institute (H2Pi) with Marty Hatlie and Dr. Timothy McDonald to effectively train hospitals to achieve the stated goals of CMS’ Partnership for Patients. Armando also serves on the MedStar System Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality and Safety and has been a driving force in establishing patient and family advisory councils for quality and safety at each of the 10 MedStar Hospitals.

Trends in Health Care and Their Impact on Governance: Time for a New Model James E. Orlikoff, President, Orlikoff & Associates, Inc.

Leaders are familiar with the analysis of the impact of trends on hospitals and health systems. But what about the impact of emerging trends on the governance model itself? Societal, economic, and demographic challenges, as well as the disruptive pressures of the health care environment, are stressing the traditional governance model. This provocative session will identify the trends that are challenging hospitals and health systems and their governance models. The program will also outline strategies to both sustain the traditional governance model as long as possible and conceptualize the creation of new governance models. James Orlikoff is the national advisor on governance and leadership to the American Hospital Association and Health Forum. He was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Health Care in the inaugural list by Modern Healthcare magazine. Orlikoff has been involved in leadership, quality and strategy issues for over 40 years. He has consulted with hospitals and systems in 12 countries and, since 1985, has worked with hospital and system governing boards to strengthen their overall effectiveness and oversight of strategy and quality. He has worked extensively on improving the relationships between boards, medical staff and management.

Build Unstoppable Teams: The Four Essential Actions of High Achievement Leadership Alden Mills, CEO, Entrepreneur, Navy SEAL Commander and Author

As a young child, Alden Mills was diagnosed with asthma and was told by doctors to lead a less active life. In fact, they suggested he learn to play chess. But his mother had other ideas for him. She continually reminded him that his limits were up to him to determine. He took that advice to heart. Ten years later, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy. He a ended Navy SEAL training and served with distinction as a Navy SEAL platoon commander . . . three times. After leaving the SEALs, he graduated from Carnegie Mellon business school. He then became an entrepreneur, building businesses in fitness, pet food, and security. One of his businesses became recognized by Inc. Magazine as the fastest growing consumer business in the country, with an astounding 12,000 percent growth rate over a three year period. Odds are that you or someone you work with uses Mills’ inventions. He has been awarded more than 40 patents that have sold over 10 million products (and counting) worldwide. He is the author of “Be Unstoppable: The 8 Essential Actions to Succeed at Anything” and “Build Unstoppable Teams: Four Essential Actions of High Achievement Leaders.” In today’s world, success is determined by the ability to build and lead teams. There’s no greater challenge than galvanizing people into teams that are equipped to solve problems and overcome hurdles. Mills will share the four pillars he uses to develop “Unstoppable Teams.” A endees will also learn about his C.A.R.E.-based leadership framework, which will make it easier to discover new passion for leading and building teams.
