She is the author of In Shock, a critically acclaimed, bestselling memoir based on her own critical illness. Dr. Awdish’s mandate is to improve the patient experience across the system and speak on patient advocacy at health care venues nationally. Saturday, January 12 8:00-10:00 a.m. The Future of Healthcare Marketplace: What’s Next? Ian Morrison, Author, Consultant and Futurist Ian Morrison is an internationally known author, consultant and futurist specializing in long-term forecasting and planning with particular emphasis on health care and the changing business environment. He combines research and consulting skills with an incisive Scottish wit to help public and private organizations plan their longer-term future. Ian is the author of Leading Change in Healthcare: Building a Viable System for Today and Tomorrow (AHA Press, June 2011) and Healthcare in the New Millennium: Vision, Values and Leadership (Jossey-Bass, 2002). His previous book, The Second Curve - Managing the Velocity of Change (Ballantine, 1996) was a New York Times Business Bestseller and Businessweek Bestseller. The Trump Administration attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare so far have proven unsuccessful, but the policy uncertainty is causing all stakeholders to re-examine strategy and respond to a potentially dramatic shift in the policy and regulatory environment. Organizations and individuals need to be flexible to adjust to a new reform agenda, including the push for more widespread reimbursement reform, changes in coverage, growth in transparency and accountability, and the relentless quest for value in health care driven by patients and purchasers. This presentation will focus on the political, economic, and strategic context of change in health care. It will also identify the leadership challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and will provide strategic insights on how organizations and individuals can flourish in the future. 10:15-11:15 a.m. Attract, Retain and Reward Key Executives and Physicians Martina Young, Senior Consultant, Human Resources & Compensation Consulting Darin Schatzman, CPA, PRP, Area Vice President, Senior Benefit Consultant and Mark Levitats, CFP, PRP, Area Vice President Arthur J. Many speakers share what they’ve done right as a lesson to others. Weston Smith was once the CFO of a Fortune 500 company that became a Wall Street darling and, within a dozen years of inception, grew from one location to over 2,000 with offices in all 50 states. Underneath the glimmering corporate office, the fleet of corporate jets, and “consistent” earnings reports was a multi-year multi-billion dollar financial statement fraud at HealthSouth Corporation. Ultimately, Weston voluntarily came forward, exposed the fraud, and accepted responsibility for his former actions. Today, his life is dedicated to making his story a life lesson from which all may learn. 1:30-2:30 p.m. Hospitals 101 for New Trustees (Optional Session) Carie Summers, CFO and Senior Vice President of Health Care Financing, Ethan James, Executive Vice President, External Affairs and Keri Conley, General Counsel Georgia Hospital Association You’ve been appointed to your local hospital’s board. Now what? Designed especially for new board members, this session provides a high-level overview of hospitals’ structure, financing and regulation.

2019 Georgia Hospital Association Trustee Conference

Sunday, January 13 9:00-10:15 a.m. 5 Steps to Make the Impossible Possible Ben Nemtin Ben Nemtin is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?, the star of the MTV show The Buried Life and an internationally renowned keynote speaker. In university, Nemtin was hit with a crippling depression that forced him to drop out of school. He felt buried by school, work, and his own mind. In an attempt to feel more alive, he made a list of ‘100 things to do before you die’ with three of his friends. They called their mission “The Buried Life” after a poem that articulated their feelings perfectly. The foursome borrowed an RV, bought a second-hand camera so they could film their journey, and hit the road for two weeks one summer to tackle their list. That two-week road trip started a movement that fueled Nemtin and his friends to continue to check things off their bucket list and help others for the next decade. Nemtin’s message of radical possibility leaves audiences inspired and equipped to tackle the seemingly insurmountable. His system of achieving any impossible goal demystifies daunting tasks by creating a digestible pathway to success.
