Daryl Tol Executive Vice President, One Mind Sick of It: The Evolving Psychology of Work

Coming through a global pandemic has substantially increased the number of individuals struggling with mental health, isolation, and substance use in our workplaces. At-home work has fundamentally shifted the social support structure available. The stress of the pandemic has added a baseline level of trauma to everyone’s lives, especially health care workers. However, we are starting to wake up to the problems of mental health in our workplaces. We’re starting to speak up more, work to reduce stigma, and improve benefit structures. But there’s much more to do. How do we recognize our stories and build the workplace of the future? In 2021, Daryl joined leading mental health and brain research nonprofit One Mind as executive vice president, overseeing the One Mind at Work programs and contributing to One Mind’s vision and objectives. Tol brings more than 20 years of health care leadership, as well as personal experience of mental health struggles. During his 20-year tenure at AdventHealth, Tol held executive leadership roles across the health system’s regional divisions. Most recently, he served for six years as the president and CEO of its 16-hospital Central Florida Division. In this position, he led the development of the national company’s consumer technology and analytics products, grew the Central Florida Division through the acquisition of two hospital facilities, ownership in a neighboring four-hospital health system, and the opening of dozens of additional care sites. Tol holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Walla Walla University in College Place, Washington and a Master of Healthcare Administration from Loma Linda University in California.

Anthony Ray Hinton Activist and Author The Sun Does Shine

Anthony Ray Hinton was wrongfully accused, imprisoned and lived on Death Row for nearly 30 years for a crime he didn’t commit. How did he survive and more importantly thrive in this environment and under these circumstances? Through God, he learned “to never accept the unacceptable.” Come hear his powerful story of forgiveness, faith and ultimate freedom. Anthony Ray Hinton’s story is a decades-long journey to exoneration and freedom. In 1985, he was convicted of the unsolved murders of two fast-food restaurant managers. Ballistics experts who provided testimony for the state claimed that the crime bullets came from a dusty revolver found in Mr. Hinton’s mother’s closet. Without the benefit of a competent expert to challenge the state’s theory, an all-white jury convicted Mr. Hinton, and he was sentenced to death. After years of petitioning to have the revolver re-analyzed, three independent experts concluded that the bullets could not have been fired from his mother’s revolver. With the assistance of the Equal Justice Initiative led by attorney Bryan Stevenson, Mr. Hinton was freed in 2015. Since his release, Mr. Hinton has traveled the world, sharing his story and discussing the changes that need to be made to prevent similar injustices from happening to other people.
