Everyone’s favourite bear returns along with the same great cast for more adventures in Paddington 2. Hugh Grant joins in the sequel mayhem when Paddington and his much-loved family, the Browns, have to
track down the thief responsible for stealing Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday present. And poignantly touching is biopic film Breathe, Andy Serkis’s directorial debut starring Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Tom Hollander and Hugh Bonneville. It tells the inspiring true love story of Robin and Diana Cavendish, an adventurous couple who refuse to give up in the face of a devastating disease. It’s set to be a heart-warming celebration of human possibility, which will no doubt leave a lump in your throat. Based on Peter Turner’s memoir, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool follows the playful but passionate relationship between Turner (Jamie Bell) and the eccentric Academy Award-winning actress Gloria
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS
WELCOME
This brochure edition brings the long-awaited news of two great new films hitting our big screens – Murder On The Orient Express and Paddington 2!

Our popular Toddler Time strand continues with a great programme of pre-school-friendly screenings including Sarah and Duck, Messy

The Death Of Stalin (15) Director: Armando Iannucci. Starring: Steve Buscemi, Jeffrey Tambor, Simon Russell Beale, Michael Palin, Jason Isaacs, Andrea Riseborough, Rupert Friend. France/UK 2017. 107 mins.
The internal political landscape of 1950s Soviet Russia takes on darkly comic form in a new film by Oscar-nominated writer/director Armando Iannucci (Veep, In The Loop, The Thick Of It). In the days following Stalin’s collapse, the machinations of senior party officials and courtiers kick into overdrive. Some want positive change in the Soviet Union; others have more sinister motives. But behind all the collusion, backstabbing and strong-arming, the jostling ministers have one thing in common – they’re just desperate to stay alive. Based on the graphic novel by French writer Fabian Nury, Iannucci’s script is loaded with acerbic, politically incorrect conversation, which is delivered by some of the finest and funniest character actors from both sides of the pond.

With the help of Diana’s twin brothers (Hollander) and the groundbreaking ideas of inventor Teddy Hall (Bonneville), Robin and Diana dare to escape the hospital ward to seek out a full and passionate life together – raising their young son, travelling and devoting their lives to helping other polio patients. The best known and most loved of Agatha Christie’s books returns to the big screen with a lavish setting, an all-star complement of passengers/ suspects and a few new twists and turns to keep the audience guessing. Sir Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as the magnificently moustachioed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, whose luxurious train ride turns into a chilling murder-mystery. Thirteen strangers become suspects when the locomotive is snowbound and a passenger is murdered. It’s up to Poirot to solve the unsolvable before the killer strikes again. One of the big questions for this whodunnit is who’sinnit, and the answer is practically everyone: the irresistible passenger list includes Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Dame Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The wholehearted, accident-prone bear from deepest, darkest Peru returns with a second helping of his endearing brand of good-natured mischief. Happily settled in Windsor Gardens, Paddington takes on a variety of odd jobs to raise enough money to buy a very special book for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday. But when the precious book is stolen, Paddington and the Browns have to track down the culprit. Ben Wishaw again voices the lovable if hapless furry character, while Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins reprise their roles as his surrogate parents, Mr and Mrs Brown. Director/cowriter Paul King returns to ensure consistent appeal, and even adds some new characters to the fun, including Hugh Grant as a vain, fading actor and Brendan Gleeson’s fearsome safecracker.

Based on actor Peter Turner’s poignant memoir, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool follows the intense romance kindled by Hollywood legend Gloria Grahame and the much younger Turner in the late 1970s. Looking for stage work in Britain to revive her career, Grahame (Bening) meets Turner (Bell) in a London boarding house, sparking a vibrant, whirlwind affair. A few years later, after their courtship has ended, Grahame collapses in a Lancaster hotel. Her health failing, she reaches out to her former flame. When she moves to Liverpool to stay with Turner and his family, the pair’s memories of what they once had come flooding back. Bell and Bening excel as the star-crossed lovers, vividly capturing their physical and emotional connection. For Bening in particular, this might just be the performance that makes it her year at the Oscars.

As their rivalry intensified in the media glare, both King and Riggs fought complex battles in their private lives. Together, they served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court. Contains infrequent moderate sex.

The Man Who Invented Christmas (Cert TBC) Director: Bharat Nalluri. Starring: Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce. Ireland/Canada 2017. TBC mins.
Facebook: Abbeygatecinema Twitter: Abbeygate_bury
Popular historian Les Standiford’s eponymous best-seller told how, in order to revive his then flagging career, Charles Dickens was obliged, in 1843, to self-publish A Christmas Carol. The novel soon caused a sensation, and it revived much of the nostalgia and tradition we associate with Christmas today. Director Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day) has turned Standiford’s story into a cracking cinematic yarn. Dan Stevens (Beauty And The Beast) plays the hard-pressed and broke author, finishing the novel in just six weeks and being swept away by his own story. In the process the now legendary characters of Ebenezer Scrooge (Plummer) and Tiny Tim are brought vividly to life, and adding to the poignant fun are Jonathan Pryce as Dickens’s father, John Dickens, and Miriam Margolyes as Mrs Fisk. Just in time for the festive season!

North By Northwest (PG) Director: Alfred Hitchcock. Starring: Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason. USA 1959. 136 mins.
This is perhaps Alfred Hitchcock’s most perfectly realised film. Interweaving themes of paranoia, isolation and sexual anxiety with responsibility and redemption, the film is a bizarre tightrope walk between sex and repression, nightmarish thriller and urban comedy.

Daphne (15)
Daphne (Emily Beecham) is a young woman negotiating the tricky business of modern life. Busy days and hectic nights distract her from realising that deep down she’s not happy. One day, an unexpected event forces her to confront the inevitability of a muchneeded change.
The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (Cert
Black humour, horror and classical tragedy collide in the second Englishlanguage feature from absurdist Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). Steven (Farrell) is a successful cardiac surgeon who enjoys a happy, healthy and affluent life in suburbia with his wife (Kidman) and two children. When he befriends a young man (Keoghan) and takes him under his wing, a fatal mistake he once made on the operating table comes back to haunt him and his family in terrifying fashion.
The Florida Project (Cert TBC)
Youthful friendship is the central theme in Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, which stars two gifted if not precocious amateur six-year olds, Brooklynn Prince and Valeria Cotto, playing best friends living below the poverty line. The girls’ infectious lust for life is free of moral and economic consequences, although these become apparent as the heady action careens joyously along. A truly great movie about childhood.
