Report to Donors 2018

Your impact in 2017 Since the College was founded in 1954, we have been proud to welcome generations of talented young women to study with us and, from the start, have been committed to ensuring that neither financial circumstances nor family background would provide an obstacle to a student’s ability to do so. Your support continues to make this possible, and you can read more about this in the following pages. With some of the oldest parts of the College having been inhabited for more than 50 years, we are grateful for your donations towards upkeep and refurbishment and are delighted to announce that, due to your generosity, work on Orchard Court F staircase is due to begin this summer.

offering students advice and experience for entering the workplace. Members of the New Hall Society Committee, too, regularly give their time to help us engage effectively with our ever-growing alumnae community to ensure we remain relevant. Their support and guidance is invaluable.

Many of you have also found space in your busy lives to donate your time and talent to us this year – for example, through the Gateway programme by

Your kindness and generosity is so important for maintaining this vibrant, supportive and unique community that we all value – THANK YOU!

Your impact on students The Gateway Programme is unique to Murray Edwards College and aims to ensure that our students make the most of their time at Cambridge and beyond by encouraging them to be bold in their aspirations and to develop the knowledge and skills required to achieve these goals. Gateway is open to all students, undergraduate and graduate. In a student’s first year, the focus of Gateway is academic and centres on helping students adjust to Cambridge. In the second and third year, the focus broadens and the programme helps

students think about personal development and their career aspirations. Your involvement in the programme has been invaluable; you have given your time, arranged work placements and internships and given financial support.

I used my Gateway Challenges funding to travel to Buenos Aires to volunteer at a small-scale charity called FundaciĂłn Mediapila which is dedicated to helping socially and/or economically vulnerable local women find dignified employment. My tasks were varied and included organising events, office administration, and supporting the practical workshops

(which build knowledge of the working world and teach skills such as CV writing). Most weekends, I would help at events in shopping centres or outside churches, where volunteers would sell t shirts, bags and jumpers made by the ‘students’ and ‘alumnae’ of the charity. The small scale of the organisation made everything more personal and I appreciated the variety of tasks that I was involved in - my time there was never boring nor felt arbitrary! What’s more, my Spanish improved a lot as no one in the

office spoke English and I was also able to chat with the students. Many of them were from Peru, Bolivia and northern provinces of Argentina (and so their accent was easier to understand than those from Buenos Aires), so I was lucky enough to learn more about different cultures of Latin America, beyond what I was experiencing myself. This was a really fun and valuable experience, and I am very grateful to the Gateway programme for giving me this opportunity.

Your impact on student sport

We are proud that many of our students represent the University of Cambridge in their chosen sport and, thanks to your generosity, the College is able to support

KATE MARKS, SECOND YEAR HISTORY STUDENT

these students with funding for their membership and training costs. Here, two students tell us why this funding is important to them.

Having always played rugby prior to coming to university, it was a natural decision for me to continue when I arrived in Cambridge. In order to be a part of the University club a financial commitment is required at the start of the season. The Blues funding generously granted by the College has enabled me to remain a committed member of the Blues rugby team, focussing

MARTIN BOND

When most people think of sport at Cambridge, they think about the Boat Race and rowing – and who can blame them? However, rowing is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the sport on offer at Cambridge and, as a College, we also have many different sports clubs and teams in which our students participate.

RACHEL LODGE, SECOND YEAR LAW STUDENT

my time on both my academic work and my ambition within my sport. I have now competed in two Varsity matches (2016/2017) and been able to develop into a leader within the team. Rugby has allowed me to have a well-rounded experience at Cambridge, providing a social space and a chance to develop workplace skills as a member of the club committee. I am incredibly excited to represent the College as Captain of the squad for the upcoming season.

When I started studying Law at Murray Edwards, I knew that I wanted to keep up my judo. The sport has been part of my life since I was six, and I wanted to see how far I could go at University level. The funds I received from the College helped to pay my mat fees, allowing me to train with the University team. Consequently, I was selected for the Women’s Team for Varsity. I won my fight, was awarded a Half Blue and became an Osprey. This year, I have been President of Cambridge Judo, and have again been grateful for funding from the College. This term, we travelled to Oxford for Varsity, and I again won my fight, meaning I am now a double Half Blue. The support of my College has helped me advance in a sport I love, enriching my time at Cambridge immensely.

Your impact on our College

MARTIN BOND

Like the women who come here, our buildings have always been innovative and pioneering. Our original accommodation block, Orchard Court, has provided a home to students for more than 50 years, but it is now in need of considerable attention before it is ready to house students for the next 50 years.

Last year we reached out to all our alumnae and friends and, as a result of the support we received, we are delighted to report that work will begin on F staircase in the summer of 2018. The renovation will provide comfortable and warm accommodation and, once completed, we hope that the next generation of our students will be able to look back fondly on their time living in Orchard Court as many of our alumnae do today.

Of course there is still work to do to complete the vital refurbishment of Orchard Court, and fundraising continues for G and H staircases. We will only be able to complete this crucial work with your continued support. If you would like further information on how you can make a difference to this project please contact Claire Cosgrave, Deputy Development Director: cc951@cam.ac.uk

One of our donors, Tracey Campbell (New Hall, 1980), has taken the time to let us know why she gives to this project

I remember Cambridge with great fondness – the good and even the occasional bad times. It was a privilege to be challenged by so many intelligent people, and I sang in choirs, made costumes for five plays that went to the Edinburgh Fringe and attended a lot of parties as well as writing essays on the incest taboo and Marx. None of that would have been possible without the flexibility of New Hall (as it then was) as I switched at the last minute from reading Natural Sciences to Anthropology. Several college tutors were inspirational, including the now late Sue Benson and Janet Moore who both pushed me towards opportunities I would never have dared to try without their support. What I didn’t appreciate enough at the time was how longstanding the friendships I made at College would be. 35 years later several of the same numbers are still on my speed dial for advice, fact-checking or just a laugh. Murray Edwards has definitely been a formative influence on my life and I want to make sure these opportunities remain available to the feisty women of the future. While still a

young college by Cambridge standards, Murray Edwards needs to have its infrastructure upgraded to keep up with technological changes and become more eco-friendly. Wiring, plumbing and insulation aren’t glamorous gifts but they are fundamental to keeping the doors open for the long term, which is what we all want. I believe wholeheartedly in the College’s mission to reach out to young women from all walks of life and am lucky enough to be at a stage in my life when I can give something back. I’ve preferred occasional lump sum donations but, with Gift Aid, even a modest amount per month soon adds up. There are plenty of complex problems out there and the world needs educated women to step up with a bigger share of the solutions. I very much see donating to the College as investing in the supply chain of these future leaders.

A gift for the future The gift of a legacy is a gift for the future. The generosity of those who came before us continues to help support student bursaries, Fellowships, the New Hall Art Collection and even our beautiful gardens. The Murray Society, our Legacy Circle, currently has 103 members, all of whom have notified us of their intention to leave a bequest to the College. One of them, Ann Altman (New Hall, 1966), has taken the time to share with us why she feels it is so important for her to remember the College in her Will.

If, after providing for your family, you are considering leaving a bequest to the College, or would like further information on doing so, please contact Claire Cosgrave, Deputy Development Director, cc951@cam.ac.uk.

ANN ALTMAN (NEW HALL, 1966)

MARTIN BOND

We are grateful to Ann, not only for her legacy but also for the Stephan Kรถrner Graduate Studentship in memory of her father.

I am leaving one tenth of my estate to the College. One of the purposes of bequests such as mine is to encourage others to act similarly. A second purpose is to memorialise someone who has made a difference. I hope that, no matter how large or small the

eventual sum of money handed down to the College, the College will be able to use my example to encourage similar bequests in honour of members of the College who have been an inspiration to their students. There are few better forms of preparation for life than

a Cambridge education. My father received one, and that debt is paid. I received one and, when I die, my debt will be paid also.

College Financial Overview 2017 In the last financial year, the College continued to demonstrate a solid financial balance, with increased giving from alumnae and friends around the world. The College’s investment portfolio performed strongly under the management of CCLA who were appointed in 2016, and the endowment is now at its most valuable ever. The income from the investment assets enable education, learning and research and benefit each undergraduate each year by more than £5000.

to cover repairs needed on the buildings nearly a decade ago. A more significant sum has been made available for on-going maintenance to keep the facilities up to scratch for the students as well as start a major historic renovation of several staircases in the old accommodation block.

Small surpluses have been allocated to start to pay off emergency loans, taken

None of this would be possible without the donations of alumnae and friends.
