The Chair As a response to the Online Furniture Retail - Home Office brief, this chair and table set created for Swoon Editions is a simple, geometric, modern shape of mixed materials walnut and polished steel. Designed for consumers as furniture that encourages and aids them to work from home but can also be used as enjoyable general seating within a room, it eliminates the need for a seperate office space.

personal research project

The Advertising Campaign Taking the political approach to the Personal Research Project, the topic of gender equality within the makeup industry was explored to design a new advertising campaign for popular cosmetic brand No.7 that includes all genders and races in order to eliminate the stigma behind who can wear makeup.

PRIMARY RESEARCH - surveys :

68.75%

70.84%

60%

of the 48 men asked

of the 48 men asked

of the 58 men and women asked

were unaware that brands have started to include male models within their makeup advertising. 66.26% of the 83 women asked also had no idea; showing how ineffective the campaigns are.

agreed or strongly agreed that makeup is purely aimed at women, showing that brands need to make everyone feel comfortable to buy their products by advertising and promoting them using more inclusive images and graphics.

agree that there is too much of a divide between mens and womens sections in stores such as Boots in some way. 69.65% of the 58 people asked thought that more unbiased packaging, advertising and branding of products should be introduced.

PRIMARY RESEARCH - surveys :

87.50%

25%

79.17%

of the 48 men asked

stated that they sometimes use makeup if they need to such as concealer or tinted moisturiser, and 68.68% of the 83 women asked thought that their male partner would be embarrassed when asking to borrow makeup products; hightlighting the stigma behind the industry.

agreed that cosmetic brands should use more men to promote their products. 25% of men asked said that they would feel less embarassed buying makeup products if male models were used in the advertisment.

agreed that anyone can wear makeup, male or female, if they wish to do so, asking the question as to why more male models are not included within the advertisment in stores.

industry research : I researched into existing cosmetic brands that have introduced male models in their recent makeup advertising; however they were all social media based and from surveys it was clear that incorporating this into stores would make more of an impact.

Development : For chosen brand No.7, I designed individual posters taking indspiration from their existing branding before developing a final advertising poster to be displayed in stores and on social media.

upcycling

The Lights As an outcome from the Upcycling Project brief, a range of lights have been created from recycled retail shopping bags due to only 3% of bags being recycled; making it the least recycled plastic. Using a lattice technique to weave different coloured bags together, the lights have been designed for a new brand ‘Baggage’ to be displayed in shopping centres in order to promote recycling as well as the shops themselves.

the process :

the process storyboard :

collect old retail shopping bags

measure and cut 1cm strips to desired length

glue the ends of each strip before weaving them into each other

add a folded section of plastic to the top edge of desired shape to run a wire frame through

glue all sides together until light shade appears seamless

exhibit in shopping centres as an installation

the business :

Company Logo

I have created a company to design for that would be commissioned to design lighting installations for shopping centres such as Intu. The name ‘Baggage’ is due to the obvious link to shopping bags but also the core of the brand which is upcycling therefore turning unwanted ‘baggage’ into something beautiful to observe. For this company, that shopping centres or individual stores would commission, creating business cards or posters etc using this lattice technique out of recycled card or out of bags with the companies information printed onto them, is a creative way of portraying what the idea is all about.

personal homeware product

The Camera Designed for Apple, this camera covers the requirements of the Personal Homeware Product brief, due it being aesthetcially desirable for the market, reacting to how consumers interact with products and including emerging technology such as instant printing of photographs; in order to expand the brands product portfolio.
