NARRATIVE & RITUAL PROJECT
Friendship - The Gossip Set Designed to enrich the invaluable time that is spent with your closest friends, this gossip set will aid ‘catching up’, in the comfort of your own home. Putting the world to rights over a good cuppa and a few (or ten) biscuits is a ritual that will forever be personal favourite as friendships are to be nurtured and cherished. Joined together by mug cosies, you can feel connected to friends when deep in conversation before storing everything away securely, around the reel, when sadly the pause in time when the room was filled with chatter is over.

QFC SOFA PROJECT
Design for Open-Plan Living. This sofa has been designed as a ‘Family Sofa’, aiming to be enjoyed by the whole family due to its slouchy nature and comfortable over-sized seating. Designed for open-plan living, the back of the sofa is utilised through the use of storage; ensuring that it is multi-use for a large space. Elastic strips are shown upholstered into the back of the sofa as a feature to store notes, children’s paintings or recipe pages alongside space for a pin or chalk board; as chosen by the customer. The hard timber storage within the base can be used to store children’s toys, throws for cosy movie nights, or used as a communal space to store shoes and put them on together in the morning before school.

POSSIBLE BACK OPTIONS Bungee cord options upholstered into the backs of the sofa in customisable arrangements and the choice of colours as well as a pin board option; all to store items. The veneered board storage underneath can store toys, throws or children’s shoes.

PERSONAL DESIGN PROJECT
Design For Living - De-stress, Unwind, Relax. This lighting concept aims to counteract issues caused by extremely bright lighting in working environments such as universities or offices (such as stress, fatigue and strained eyes). Designed to de-stress the user, these 3 silicone globes contain an LED fairy light constellation that creates enchanting patterns on the walls or ceiling of a room, in order to provide a relaxing environment; after a long, stressful day at work. Squeeze the globes once to turn on a warm white light for pure illumination, then squeeze a second time to change the colour of each to help de-stress. Pink aids to think more positively, blue provides a relaxing feel and green helps to calm the user.
STORYBOARD :
As the globes are tactile and interactive, much like a stress ball, the physical act of using the lights links to freeing the mind of worries and to calm stressful thoughts from work or university such as deadlines or tiredness (from bright lighting). When placed on the ash stand, the lights are an appropriate size to fit comfortably within a students small room without feeling too invasive; as well as the simple form being modern and desirable to young professionals alongside the colours being both playful and functional to de-stress the user. The globes contain motors in order to rotate the lights inside the plastic shell to create beautiful, twinkling motion pictures within a dull room. This is to create a calm environment and visual that the user can focus on and forget about their troubles; to relax and de-stress from the problems caused by poor working environment lighting.
upcycling
The Lights As an outcome from the Upcycling Project brief, a range of lights have been created from recycled retail shopping bags due to only 3% of bags being recycled; making it the least recycled plastic. Using a lattice technique to weave different coloured bags together, the lights have been designed for a new brand ‘Baggage’ to be displayed in shopping centres in order to promote recycling as well as the shops themselves.
THE PROCESS :
STORYBOARD :
collect old retail shopping bags
measure and cut 1cm strips to desired length
glue the ends of each strip before weaving them into each other
add a folded section of plastic to the top edge of desired shape to run a wire frame through
glue all sides together until light shade appears seamless
exhibit in shopping centres as an installation
The business :
Company Logo
I have created a company to design for that would be commissioned to design lighting installations for shopping centres such as Intu. The name ‘Baggage’ is due to the obvious link to shopping bags but also the core of the brand which is upcycling therefore turning unwanted ‘baggage’ into something beautiful to observe. For this company, that shopping centres or individual stores would commission, creating business cards or posters etc. using this lattice technique out of recycled card or out of bags with the companies information printed onto them, is a creative way of portraying what the idea is all about.
Online furniture retail
The Chair As a response to the Online Furniture Retail - Home Office brief, this chair and table set created for Swoon Editions is a simple, geometric, modern shape of mixed materials walnut and polished steel. Designed for consumers as furniture that encourages and aids them to work from home but can also be used as enjoyable general seating within a room, it eliminates the need for a separate office space.

STRATE COLLABORATION
The Lights In collaboration with Strate School of Design in Paris, these lighting concepts are a response to the ‘Bend, Fold, Crease’ brief. The aim was to create lighting using low cost manufacturing methods to accommodate student designers when manufacturing. We played with shadow patterns and light and shade concepts in order to create a collection of lights featuring folding and cutting techniques that do more than just illuminate a room.
About me : Hello, my name is Georgia Cook and I am a second year student currently studying Furniture and Product Design at Nottingham Trent University that takes every new project as a chance to improve or gain more skills in order to better myself as an all-rounded designer; whilst loving every second of the process. I am an enthusiastic designer with an eye for detail; adopting a simple, modern style throughout my design work whilst injecting fun and interesting elements where I can to set myself apart. I enjoy the process of seeing my research and development turn into beautiful products that I can be proud of creating, through sketching, modelling and CAD.
