ALL-STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND KIM BAIN, CONDUCTOR

TODD WILSON, PERCUSSION COORDINATOR | WENDY WILSON, ORGANIZER Kim Bain is in her thirteenth year as Director of Bands at Louis Pizitz Middle School in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. Ensembles under her leadership have consistently been cited for musical excellence at both the state and national levels throughout her 28 years of teaching. Ms. Bain was presented the Lacey Powell Outstanding Music Educator Award at the 2018 Alabama Music Educators Association Conference. She was named 2012 Teacher of the Year for the Vestavia Hills City Schools. In 2013, her Symphonic and Concert Bands performed at the Music for All National Middle School Music Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. The John Phillip Sousa Foundation awarded the Sudler Cup to the Pizitz Band program that same year. She was awarded the Phi Bet Mu, Rho Chapter, Outstanding Bandmaster Award in 2014. That same year the Pizitz Symphonic Band performed at the CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference at the University of North Florida. In December of 2014, the band performed at the 15th Annual Southeastern United States Middle School Clinic at Troy University. The Pizitz Band was declared a national winner of the National Band Association’s Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence in 2015, and in December of 2015 her band performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. In 2017 the Pizitz Jazz Band and Percussion Ensembles performed at the Alabama Music Educator’s Conference and the Symphonic Band performed at the Music for All Regional Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. In February of 2018 the Pizitz Band performed at the CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference at the University of South Florida. Ms. Bain received National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in November 2010. She has served as a clinician for the Alabama Bandmaster’s Association and guest conducted numerous honor bands and camps in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, a Master of Arts in Music Education, and an Education Specialist degree from the University of Alabama. She also holds a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Ms. Bain’s professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, Alabama Music Educators Association, Alabama Bandmasters Association, the National Band Association, and Phi Beta Mu. In addition to her teaching activities, Ms. Bain is an active freelance musician in the Birmingham area, and saxophone instructor at Samford University.

ALL-STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND DAVID PUCKETT, CONDUCTOR

MATT TINNELL, PERCUSSION COORDINATOR | LANAE DICKSTEIN, ORGANIZER

David Puckett is currently band director in Keller I.S.D, Texas, where he opened both South Keller Intermediate and Indian Springs Middle School in 2001. Mr. Puckett began teaching as a Texas music educator in 1997 and has taught at both the middle and high school levels. He teaches beginner brass classes, as well as team-teaches three performance bands, jazz band and percussion ensembles with his colleagues. Mr. Puckett was named the recipient of the 2013 John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Sudler Cup. In 2014 the Indian Springs Band was a feature performance group at The Midwest Clinic. The ISMS band program has made it to the state level of the TMEA Honor Band process three times and won the 2015 Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band competition allowing them the honor to perform at the 2016 TMEA convention as the CCC Honor Band. In 2016 Music for All’s National Concert Band festival selected their group to travel to Indianapolis in March 2017 to perform. Choice Music’s Mark of Excellence has recognized Indian Springs eleven times in the National Wind Band Honors contest, once in the Citation of Excellence and once in National Jazz Honors. Mr. Puckett’s bands receive consistent Superior ratings at Texas UIL Concert and Sight-reading contests as well as many Best in Class or outstanding bands of the day recognition at local festivals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Students from Mr. Puckett’s program consistently have the high individual representation at District and Region level honor bands and Superior ratings at solo and ensemble contests. Mr. Puckett is a member of: Phi Beta Mu – Alpha Chapter, an International Bandmasters Fraternity where he serves on the public relations committee; the Texas Music Educators Association; the Texas Bandmasters Association and enjoys regular visits to The Midwest Clinic. Mr. Puckett serves on the Texas UIL PML Music Selection Committee, has served in several offices at the TMEA region level, and currently serves as lead teacher of the seven Keller ISD middle school band programs. Mr. Puckett was a national finalist in Music and Arts National Educator of the year and has been Indian Springs Middle School’s Teacher of the Year. He thoroughly enjoys spending time outside of his own band hall as a band consultant, clinician, conductor, adjudicator, mentor and trombone performer. He has presented clinics at TMEA, TBA, TCU, SMU and many independent school districts in Texas. Mr. Puckett is humbled to be invited to work with the students as the 2018 Georgia Music Educators All-State MS Honor band conductor. Mr. Puckett graduated with his Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Nebraska –Lincoln and now resides in Keller, Texas with his loving wife Becky, beautiful daughter Rachel and surround by millions of fibers of joy from his two golden retrievers and calico cat.

ALL-STATE CONCERT BAND DR. REBECCA PHILLIPS, CONDUCTOR

Dr. Rebecca Phillips is the Director of Bands at Colorado State University where she conducts the CSU Wind Symphony and guides all aspects of the band and graduate wind conducting program. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of South Carolina where she was responsible for directing the Symphonic Winds Concert Band, “The Mighty Sound of the Southeast” Carolina Marching Band, “Concocktion” Pep Bands, teaching undergraduate instrumental conducting, and directing the Carolina Summer Drum Major Clinic. Dr. Phillips has served as a guest-conductor, clinician, and performer throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Most recently, she conducted a chamber winds concert featuring members of the Des Moines Symphony for the 2018 Iowa Bandmasters Association annual conference. In 2017, she conducted members of the Prague National Symphony at the inaugural “2017 American Spring Festival” in Prague, The Czech Republic. Dr. Phillips regularly conducts collegiate honor bands and all-state bands, and festival bands across the United States and in Canada and she has been a rehearsal clinician at the Midwest Clinic: An International Band and Orchestra Conference. Ensembles under her direction have been featured at the 2012 College Band Director’s National Association Southern Division Conference (CBDNA), the 2010 Society of Composers International Conference, and the 2008 North American Saxophone Alliance International Convention. In 2019, the Colorado State University Wind Symphony will be featured at the American Bandmasters Association National Convention. Dr. Phillips believes in treasuring the traditional wind music of the past as well as promoting cutting edge works of today’s finest composers. She has commissioned and conducted world and consortium premieres of works by several leading composers, including William Bolcomb, Frank Ticheli, James David, John Mackey, John Fitz Rogers, Robert Bradshaw, and Brett Dietz. Her conducting performances of David del Tredici’s In Wartime and John Mackey’s Redline Tango are both featured on the nationally distributed Louisiana State University Wind Ensemble compact disc project and the world premiere of John Fitz Rogers Narragansett is featured on the Compact Disc And I Await, featuring Dr. Phillips as guest conductor of the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble. As a trombonist, Dr. Phillips’ performances can be found on several internationally distributed recordings. She has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, U.S. Army Band (Pershing’s Own), the Tallahassee Symphony, and the Tampa Bay Opera Orchestra. She has also performed internationally in England, Mexico, the Caribbean, Russia, and Sweden, and has toured as a trombonist with Johnny Mathis and Barry Manilow. A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Phillips earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from The Florida State University, Master of Music degrees in conducting and trombone performance from the University of South Florida, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in conducting at Louisiana State University. She served as a secondary school band director for seven years in Florida, including Director of Bands at Howard W. Blake Performing Arts High School in Tampa, Florida where she developed an award-winning concert band program. Currently, she is the First Vice President and President-Elect of the National Band Association and serves on the Music Education Committee of the College Band Directors National Association.

ALL-STATE CONCERT BAND DR. MARY K. SCHNEIDER, CONDUCTOR

Mary K. Schneider is Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Eastern Michigan University where she conducts the Wind Symphony, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting and music education, directs the Music Now contemporary music festival, and guides the vision of the comprehensive band program at EMU. In addition, Dr. Schneider was appointed and began serving as interim Associate Director of the School of Music & Dance in 2018. Prior to her appointment at Eastern Michigan University a decade ago, Dr. Schneider served on the music faculty at the University of Minnesota for three years. Active nationally and internationally as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Dr. Schneider is a strong advocate for new wind music, and maintains an active interest in that area of research. She has participated in commissioning and/or premiering over two dozen new works for wind band, and her ensembles frequently collaborate with composers, including most recently Dana Wilson, Michael Daugherty, Roshanne Etezady, William Bolcom, Carlos Simon, Steven Stucky, Aaron Perrine, and Catherine Likhuta. In addition to published articles in the GIA book series, Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, Schneider has presented on the topic of wind repertoire at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and is a frequent invited lecturer on the celebrated American composer, John Corigliano, and his Symphony No. 3 for large wind ensemble, “Circus Maximus.” Dr. Schneider brings a diverse background to the podium and to her students in the classroom. She holds a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied conducting with Jerry Junkin. She has also earned degrees in horn performance and music education from the New England Conservatory of Music, and the University of Connecticut, having graduated with Distinction in Performance honors from the former. Elected to the American Bandmasters Association in 2013, Schneider is President-Elect of the North Central Division of the College Band Directors National Association, and has served two terms as President of the Mid-American Conference Band Directors Association. She is a contributing founder of the Music Education Alliance; a collaborative initiative between CBDNA, Music For All, and the National Band Association, sponsoring the William P. Foster project. Additionally, she serves on the Music Education Committee, and chairs the Diversity Committee for CBDNA, and maintains professional affiliations with the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, and holds honorary membership in the national band fraternities of Kappa Kappa Psi, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Following a distinguished 33 year teaching career, Professor Paula A. Crider continues to share her passion for making music through an active schedule as guest conductor, lecturer, clinician and adjudicator. She has enjoyed engagements in 47 states, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Australia and New Zesland. Professor Crider has taught in the public schools at all levels, and holds the unique distinction of having been the first female in the state of Texas to serve as director of bands at a class 5-A high school. Her Crockett High School Bands in Austin, Texas enjoyed both state and national recognition for musical excellence on the concert stage, and were twice named Texas 5A State Marching Champions. A tenured Full Professor at The University of Texas, Crider conducted the Symphony Band, and was Director of the acclaimed University of Texas Longhorn Band. During her 17 year tenure, she was twice accorded the “Eyes of Texas” Award for distinguished teaching. She continues to serve as visiting guest professor at universities throughout the country. She has written numerous articles for The Instrumentalist, The Band Directorʼ s Guide, the National Band Association Journal, and has published manuals for Brass Techniques, Marching Band Methods and Instrumental Conducting. She is co-author for the Hal Leonard “Masterwork Studies” series, and author of The Composerʼ s Legacy, Conductors on Conducting for Wind Band published by GIA. Professor Crider has presented professional teacher seminars throughout the United States, and has served as Music Director for the London New Year’s Day Parade. She is coordinator for the National Band Association Young Conductor/Mentor Program, is senior Educational Consultant for Conn-Selmer, Inc., and serves on the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Board of Directors. Crider is a Past President of the National Band Association, and the American Bandmasterʼ s Association. Awards and honors include the Tau Beta Sigma/Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service to Music Award, the Sudler Legion of Merit, The Women Band Directorʼ s International Rose, The Grainger Society Medal, the National Band Association AWAPA Award, 2004 Texas Bandmaster of the Year, Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame, and the Midwest Medal of Honor. In 2013, she was honored with a Doctor of Music Education Honoris Causa from the Vandercook School of Music. She was inducted into both the Women Band Directors International and the National Band Association Hall of Fame, and in 2015 was elected to the Phi Beta Mu International Hall of Fame.

ALL-STATE SYMPHONIC BAND DR. SARAH McKOIN, CONDUCTOR

Dr. Sarah McKoin is the Director of Bands and Professor of Conducting at Texas Tech University. Her responsibilities include Conductor and Musical Director of the TTU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, administrating the graduate program in wind conducting, teaching conducting and wind literature, and overseeing all facets of the University band program, which includes 5 concert bands, the 400 member Goin’ Band from Raiderland, and other athletic bands. Under Dr. McKoin’s direction, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform for the third time at the 2017 Texas Music Educators Association Conference, and has been featured at the Southwest Regional Conference for the College Band Director’s National Association in Las Cruces, NM. Dr. McKoin’s ensemble has recorded world premiere recordings of the wind music of Chen Yi on the Naxos label released in 2015, as well as Narong Prangcharoen’s work Chakra on his compilation CD entitled “Phenomenon,” released on the Albany label. Dr. McKoin maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor and clinician and has traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Recently, she served as a clinician for a band festival in Thailand, and has worked for the Asian Pacific American School Honor Band in Guangzhou, China comprised of 100 students from Korea, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Kuala Lampur, Shanghai and other Southeast Asian cities. She has guest conducted in Taipei, Taiwan and has traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel to serve as producer for the world premiere recording of Roberto Sierra’s Fantasia Correliana with the Castellani-Andriaccio guitar duo. Prior to her appointment at Texas Tech, Professor McKoin was the Director of Bands at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and held appointments at the State University of New York at Buffalo and SUNY Fredonia. Additionally, McKoin spent nine summers in residence on the conducting faculty at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina as the Director of the Transylvania Wind Ensemble, and has taught at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Dr. McKoin holds her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin as well as degrees from Wichita State University and Michigan State University. She has served as President of the Southwest Division of the College Band Director’s National Association as well as President of the Big 12 Band Director’s Association. She is a member of TMEA, TBA, Phi Beta Mu, Pi Kappa Lambda and holds honorary memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.

ALL-STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL ORCHESTRA JOEL POWELL, CONDUCTOR BILL SCRUGGS, ORGANIZER

Joel Powell is currently the Director of Orchestras at Carmel Middle School in Carmel, IN and also serves as the Concert Orchestra conductor of the New World Youth Orchestras of Indianapolis, IN. Mr. Powell graduated magna cum laude with honors from Ball State University, earning a BA in Music Education. Mr. Powell is formerly an orchestra director at Avon Community Schools and Goshen Community Schools where he taught middle and high school orchestra. Mr. Powell is an accomplished conductor and orchestra director. As a conductor, he studied with Kirk Trevor and Bohuslav Rattay and has participated in master classes with Kevin Noe. Mr. Powell’s orchestras have consistently earned international recognition and honors. Two of Mr. Powell’s orchestras have been invited to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, Il, first with the Avon Middle School Chamber Orchestra in 2015 at the 69th Annual Midwest Clinic and second the Carmel Middle School Chamber Orchestra in 2017 at the 71st Annual Midwest Clinic. Highly sought after as a clinician and conductor, Mr. Powell’s orchestras consistently earn top ratings and prizes at contests and festivals. Mr. Powell has twice served as an honorary guest conductor for the Jefferson County Public School Corporation’s All-County Honor Orchestra (Louisville, KY), conducting both the high school and middle school honor orchestras. He has also guest-conducted the Indiana American String Teachers Association All-Region Honor Orchestra. Since 2014, Mr. Powell has served as a faculty clinician for the Music for All Summer Symposium at Ball State University. Additionally, Mr. Powell and his ensembles have been featured in The Instrumentalist magazine, a music education magazine circulated around the world. As a leader in the field of music education, Mr. Powell presented a clinic in 2017 at the prestigious Midwest Clinic on the subject of middle school and high school curriculum alignment. Mr. Powell began his studies on violin and viola with Dr. Caroline Card Wendt. As a violinist, Mr. Powell studied with concert violinist and recording artist Mary Kothman and was a scholarship pupil of renowned violin virtuoso Sherry Kloss, past teaching associate of Jascha Heifetz. Mr. Powell’s list of professional performance engagements as a musician include such distinctions as scholarship pupil at the Jascha Heifetz Institute for the Development of Personal Style and master classes with Sydney Harth, Felicia Moye, David Holland, Roger Meyers, and Stephen Clapp, the former Dean of the Juilliard School of Music. Mr. Powell is also an accomplished violist and studied extensively with Philip Tietze. Mr. Powell regularly performs with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra and other area orchestras as both a violinist and violist. Mr. Powell’s wife, Madison Gren Powell, is an accomplished concert violinist and respected private teacher. Mr. Powell also has a son, Gavin, and two daughters, Sabrina and Vanessa, all of whom study the violin.

ALL-STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL ORCHESTRA DEBORAH BAKER MONDAY, CONDUCTOR BO NA, ORGANIZER

Deborah Baker Monday has retired from her 25 year tenure in the award winning Logan City orchestra program. She continues to share her talents with students as a guest clinician, conductor and teaching supervisor. Ms. Monday received her B.M.E., magna cum laude, from Florida State University with an emphasis in string education. She was awarded an academic fellowship to attend the University of Alabama where she received her M.M. in composition. During that time she was a bassist with the Meridian Symphony Orchestra and the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra. She continued her studies at Louisiana State University where she received the Chancellor’s Award to participate in the L.S.U. Symphony Orchestra under the direction of James Yestadt. She has studied theory and composition with Harold Schiffman, John Boda, Frederic Goossen, Paul Hedwall and Dinos Constantinides. Ms. Monday continued to be an active bass performer when she moved to Utah. After completing all of the course work and passing the written and oral portions of the doctoral exams, she was hired to teach in the Logan City School District as a low string specialist. During her tenure with Logan she has pursued her interest in composition and arranging for educational strings and has over 130 works with seven publishing companies. This has been a rewarding part of her career while she and her husband, Bill, have raised 4 amazing children. She has received awards for Outstanding Elementary Educator and Superior Accomplishment from the UtahASTA and UtahMEA, respectively. She won the UtahASTA Composition Competition in 2006 and 2011. Ms. Monday has presented at numerous state music conferences throughout the U.S. as well as several national ASTA conventions, The Midwest Clinic and the prestigious Ohio State String Teachers Workshop. She is very active as a clinician, conductor and adjudicator and has received numerous commissions for her work. Her studies in composition and experience in string education have combined to make her one of the leading contributors to the educational repertoire for string players.

ALL-STATE 9TH & 10TH GRADE STRING ORCHESTRA WILLIAM WHITE, CONDUCTOR PATRICIA CLEATON, ORGANIZER

William C. White is a conductor, composer, teacher, writer, and performer based in Seattle, WA, where he currently serves as music director of Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers, a unique performing ensemble comprised of a chorus and orchestra that concertize as one. From 2011 to 2015, Mr. White served as Assistant Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, working closely with music director Louis Langrée and an array of guest artists, including John Adams, Philip Glass, Jennifer Higdon, and Itzhak Perlman. A noted pedagogue, he has led some of the nation’s finest youth orchestra programs, including Portland’s Metropolitan Youth Symphony and the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra. Mr. White has long-standing associations with a number of musical organizations, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for whom he has regularly given pre-concert lectures since 2008. Mr. White maintains a significant career as a composer of music for the concert stage, theater, cinema, church, radio, and film. His music has been performed throughout North America as well as in Asia and Europe. His output includes a symphony, an oratorio, chamber music of all varieties, and several works intended for young audiences. His music has been recorded on the MSR Classics and Cedille Record labels. Mr. White earned a masters degree in Conducting from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, and a BA in Music from the University of Chicago. In 2004, he began attending the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors under the tutelage of Michael Jinbo, later serving as the school’s Conducting Associate, then as its Composer-in-Residence. Mr. White hails from Bethesda, MD, where he began his musical training as a violist. Akiko Fujimoto is the associate conductor for the Minnesota Orchestra, where she conducts the Young People’s Concerts, Symphonic Adventures for High Schools, special events and outdoor community concerts, while serving as cover conductor for classical subscription programs and Live at Orchestra Hall performances. Additionally, she serves as a link to the community, participating in engagement activities, school visits and collaborations with other Minnesota arts and cultural institutions. Before arriving in Minnesota, Fujimoto served as the associate conductor of the San Antonio Symphony for five seasons. Highlights in San Antonio included a gala featuring violinist Gil Shaham in Brahms’ Violin Concerto, an all-French classical subscription program and fully staged ballet productions including Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Prior to arriving in Texas, Fujimoto served as the conducting associate for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. As a guest conductor, Fujimoto has performed with the Houston Symphony, Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, the Round Rock Symphony and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. Additionally, she has conducted Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra as a participant in the Young Conductors Program and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the St. Magnus Festival. During the 2018-19 season she will make her debut with the Mid-Texas Symphony with the music of Rossini, Ellen Taafe Zwilich and Tchaikovsky. She will also return to the San Antonio Symphony to conduct a classical subscription program featuring music of Toru Takemitsu, Bernstein and Dvořák, and to the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a cover conductor for two all-Brahms programs. In August 2019, she will conduct her first program on the Minnesota Orchestra’s Sommerfest series. Fujimoto has extensive experiences working with young musicians, starting at Harvard University where she directed the Mozart Society Orchestra for five seasons and at Stanford University where she served as the interim music director of the Stanford Symphony Orchestra. In Virginia, she held the positions of Director of Orchestras at the College of William & Mary and music director of the Williamsburg Youth Orchestras. Born in Japan, Fujimoto moved to the United States at age 14 and attended Stanford University where she studied music and psychology. She holds masters degrees in conducting from Boston University and the Eastman School of Music.

Michael Hopkins is Associate Professor and Chair of Music Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he teaches courses in string techniques, orchestra methods, research methods, and the psychology of music. Prior to joining the U-M faculty, Hopkins was the conductor of the University of Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and directed middle and high school orchestras in Colorado, Michigan, and Vermont. He is the founding director of the Burlington Chamber Orchestra and has been a guest conductor at over 100 orchestra festivals and clinics throughout the United States. He has given over 60 presentations at national and state music education conferences on various topics in string education and music technology and has composed and arranged over 70 published works for orchestra. He has published articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, International Journal of Music Education, CRME Bulletin, Music Education Research, American String Teacher, String Research Journal, the Music Educators’ Journal and The Instrumentalist. He is the author of the String Technique YouTube channel, a pedagogical resource with over 100 videos.

ALL-STATE 11TH & 12TH GRADE FULL ORCHESTRA CAROLYN WATSON, CONDUCTOR

TODD MANSON, PERCUSSION COORDINATOR | FRANK FOLDS, ORGANIZER A major prizewinner at the 2012 Emmerich Kálmán International Operetta Conducting Competition in Budapest, Carolyn Watson was also a Fellow of the American Academy of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival where she studied with David Zinman. She has conducted orchestras throughout Europe including the Brandenburg Symphony, BBC Concert Orchestra, North Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Kodály Philharmonic, Savaria Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Operetta Theatre, Bulgarian State Opera Bourgas and in Russia, the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. In 2017 Carolyn was one of six conductors selected for the elite Dallas Opera Institute for Women Conductors and has participated in master classes with Marin Alsop, Peter Eötvös, Yoel Levi, Martyn Brabbins and Alex Polishchuk. Carolyn conducted musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic in Interaktion 2010 and was Musical Assistant at the Staatsoper Berlin in 2012 for Infektion!, a festival of modern theatre celebrating the works of John Cage. She was resident at the Israeli National Opera during 2009 and assisted Sir Charles Mackerras on his final two productions at The Royal Opera, Covent Garden and Glyndebourne the following year. Carolyn is the recipient of a number of prestigious national and international awards for young conductors including the Brian Stacey Award for emerging Australian conductors, Sir Charles Mackerras Conducting Prize awarded via the Australian Music Foundation in London, Opera Foundation Australia’s Bayreuth Opera Award and Berlin New Music Opera Award and the Nelly Apt Conducting Scholarship. She is the beneficiary of support from the American Australian Association’s Dame Joan Sutherland Fund and a Sheila Pryor Study Grant from the Australian Opera Auditions Committee. Featured in a national conductor preview with the Sydney Symphony, Carolyn in 2011, was also Assistant Conductor for the inaugural Australian World Orchestra concert season in Sydney working with Simone Young. Also during 2011 she was Associate Conductor of the Tasmania Discovery Orchestra and Assistant Chorus Master of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. In 2008 Carolyn conducted the Scottish Chamber Orchestra during the Orkney Conducting Course before returning home to conduct the World Youth Day Orchestra on the occasion of the Pope’s arrival in Australia for a live audience of one hundred thousand and a worldwide-televised audience of some five million people. Winner of the 2015 American Prize in Orchestral Performance and Runner-up for The American Prize in Conducting, Carolyn is also an enthusiastic music educator and currently serves as Director of Orchestral Studies at The University of Kansas whilst continuing to enjoy an active freelance career throughout the US, Europe and Australia. From 2013-15 she held the prestigious position of Music Director of the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra, having also conducted the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra since moving to the US in 2013. Carolyn holds a PhD in Performance (Conducting) from the University of Sydney where the subject of her doctoral thesis was Gesture as Communication: The Art of Carlos Kleiber.
