INTRODUCTION DR. MACKIE V. SPRADLEY
Dr. Mackie V. Spradley is the Director of Enrichment Education for the Texas Education Agency who provides statewide leadership over all enrichment subjects. Concurrently, Mackie teaches graduate-level courses in the Educational Leadership Online Master’s Program as an adjunct professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration, College of Education, University of North Texas. Mackie’s career encompasses diverse teaching contexts and various levels. Before becoming the Coordinator of Secondary Choral & General Music Studies in the Dallas Independent School District for 10 years, Mackie taught music in Ft. Worth ISD and Dallas ISD for 16 years. Mackie’s teaching experiences include Texas Woman’s University, Ft. Worth Civic Chorus, private studio voice, and extended assignments in Jamaica and Japan. Mackie consistently demonstrates her ability to lead and willingness to serve having served as Multicultural Chair, board member of the National Association for Multicultural Educators, associated faculty with the Texas Christian University Center for Public Education, state-level think-tanks, and as a curriculum writer of the Music Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Currently, Mackie serves as Immediate Past President of the Texas NAfME chapter and facilitator for the Teacher Retention Area for Strategic Planning and Action with the Society of Music Teacher Education (SMTE). Mackie has shared her expertise at various music conferences including Arizona MEA, Colorado MEA, Texas MEA, Texas Choral Directors Association, SMTE, Biennial Music Educators National Conference, and the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc. Her published work includes articles in the National Forum of Multicultural Issues Journal, Texas Music Educators Conference Connections, and a book chapter in Educational Leadership and Music. Mackie received the Bachelor of Music in Voice from the University of North Texas and a Master of Arts in Vocal Pedagogy from Texas Woman’s University. She received her Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of North Texas in the College of Education with a major in Curriculum and Instruction and a minor in Anthropology. Mackie continues to focus her work and efforts on issues related to equity in music education.

BAND DIVISION SCOTT SHEEHAN
A nationally recognized advocate and leader for the advancement of music education, Scott Sheehan is the Director of Bands and Music Department Chairperson at the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School in Hollidaysburg, PA where he directs the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band and teaches AP Music Theory, Fundamentals of Guitar, and Rock, Rap, and Revolution!. Hollidaysburg has been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education in the United States by the NAMM Foundation for the past eight years under Scott’s leadership. In addition to his duties at Hollidaysburg, Mr. Sheehan was a finalist for the 2019 GRAMMY Music Educator Award and is an Educational Clinician for Conn-Selmer. He is also a consultant for strategic planning and association development. As the President of the NAfME Eastern Division from 2015-2017, Mr. Sheehan served on the National Executive Band and Executive Committee. He is currently the Program Chair for the NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles. As an active member of the PMEA, Scott has served as State President, as well as a District President and Curriculum and Instruction State Representative. He coordinates the PMEA Leadership Academy, serves on the PMEA Mentoring Program Steering Committee, is chair of the PMEA Model Curriculum Framework project. Mr. Sheehan is a member of Phi Beta Mu, the International Bandmasters Fraternity, and served as a liaison to the NAfME National Band Council. He was recognized at the state level as a Pennsylvania Keystone Technology Integrator by the Department of Education, was named Teacher of the Year in 2013 by the Hollidaysburg Area School District, and received the Outstanding Music Educator Award from Penn State University’s College of Arts and Architecture in 2016. He is an active guest conductor and clinician throughout the country and performs trumpet with the Hollidaysburg Community Band and with the Altoona Brass Collective. Scott holds a B.S. Degree in Music Education and a B.M. Degree in Music Marketing from Clarion University, and holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the Pennsylvania State University. Scott and his wife Amy are the proud parents of their daughter Ellie.
CHORAL DIVISION DR. LYNN GACKLE
Lynne Gackle is the Director of Choral Activities at Baylor University and holds the Mary Jane Gibbs Professor of Music Chair. She conducts Baylor Bella Voce, Baylor Concert Choir, teaches choral conducting, choral literature and serves as the Director of the Ensemble Division. Prior to her Baylor appointment, Lynne taught at the University of South Florida, University of Mississippi and the University of Miami (FL). She received her education from LSU (BME) and the University of Miami (MM/PhD) in Coral Gables, FL. She is an active clinician and conductor and has held various positions within the American Choral Directors Association, including President, Southern Division and ACDA-Florida and currently serves as the National President. She also served as the TCDA-VP of Collegiate/Community Choirs. Gackle is the editor of Choral Artistry for the Singer (Walton Music/GIA) and the Lynne Gackle Choral Series (Colla Voce). Recognized for her research on the female adolescent voice, Lynne is the author of Finding Ophelia’s Voice, Opening Ophelia’s Heart (Heritage) and is a contributing author for other books published by GIA, Oxford, and Hal Leonard/McGraw Hill. She holds memberships in ACDA, TMEA, TCDA, and NATS. She and her husband, Merlin, reside in Woodway, TX.
GRETCHEN HARRISON
Gretchen Harrison is in her 25th year of teaching choral music. After teaching in Blue Valley for 15 years, she is currently the choir director at Frontier Trail Middle School in the Olathe school district. Mrs. Harrison earned a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Wichita State University and a Masters’ Degree in Music Education from University of Missouri-Kansas City. After serving in various district and state-level leadership position, she is the currently the National Chairperson for Junior High and Middle School Repertoire and Standards for ACDA. She was recognized in 2003 as Outstanding ML Choral Educator for NEKMEA and was the 2009 Outstanding Middle Level Music Educator for NEKMEA. Mrs. Harrison is also served as the Olathe JH/MS Choral Facilitator. She is active in ACDA, KCDA and KMEA and holds membership in Chorus America. She is married to a busy high school band director. They are the parents to 2 children, Kellyn and Cole.
DR. MARTHA SHAW
Since coming to Reinhardt University in fall 2012, Dr. Shaw has led the University’s choral programs to new heights of excellence, just as she did in her previous position at another Georgia university and in her role as artistic director of Spivey Hall Children’s Choir Program. This spring Dr. Shaw received the Reinhardt University United Methodist Exemplary Teaching Award. The award, voted on by her faculty colleagues throughout the University, goes to a faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and colleagues; commitment to values-centered education; and, service to students, the institution and the community. A graduate of Shorter College (BME), University of Tennessee (MS) and the University of South Carolina (DMA in Conducting), Martha Shaw is a highly regarded clinician and guest conductor through the U.S. and around the world.
ELEMENTARY DIVISION ROBERT LYDA
Rob Lyda is an Instructor of Music at Auburn University and the music teacher at Cary Woods Elementary in Auburn, AL. Throughout his career he has taught a variety of music courses for students in grades K-undergraduate. Dr. Lyda is the recipient of several awards including school and district Teacher of the Year, the Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award, and was named the 2019 Lacey Powell Outstanding Music Educator by the Alabama Music Educators Association. In addition to his academic degrees Dr. Lyda has earned certification in Kodály, World Music Drumming, TI:ME, is an Orff-Schulwerk (Levels I-III) certified teacher and holds Master Level Certification in Orff-Schulwerk. Dr. Lyda regularly presents sessions and research on technology integration, creativity, and general music education at state, regional, and national conferences. He holds memberships in the Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), American Orff Schulwerk Association, College Music Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. Currently, Dr. Lyda serves as the Chair of NAfME’s Council for General Music Education, Secretary of the Elementary Division of the AMEA, and the Advocacy Chair of the AMEA. In his spare time, Dr. Lyda enjoys facilitating life long music making as the Director of Music at Grace UMC and as director of the Auburn Ukulele Band.
GUITAR DR. ROB PETHEL
Dr. Rob Pethel is a musician, educator, and researcher based in Atlanta, Georgia. With both parents being professional musicians and educators, Rob experienced a very musical upbringing. His formal studies in music began at Georgia State University, where he earned a B.Mus. with a concentration in classical guitar under renowned pedagogue John Sutherland in 2002. Rob garnered a linguistic command of Spanish and Greek languages through studies in music and folklore at the National Conservatory of Music in the Dominican Republic and the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, respectively. These international experiences resulted in a multi-cultural approach to music education. In 2010, Rob received a M.Ed. from Auburn University, and most recently defended his Ph.D. dissertation in Music Education from Georgia State University in 2015. His research focused on guitar pedagogy, ethnomusicology, and public education. Over the past several years, Rob has put his musical experience to work. He continues to implement innovative approaches to the art of musical study and education. In 2009, he initiated a classroom guitar program at Sutton Middle School, where he continues to teach and serve as the chair of the Arts/H.P.E. department. Rob is in demand as a clinician, having conducted workshops for the National Association for Music Education’s acclaimed Teaching Guitar Workshop, Georgia Music Educators Association, and Atlanta Public Schools. Though entrenched in educational research, he maintains a personal passion for music performance. He plays with various groups in a range of styles including bluegrass, Latin, rock, and classical.

ORCHESTRA DIVISION DR. REBECCA MACLEOD
Dr. Rebecca MacLeod is Professor of Music Education at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where she directs the string education program and conducts the UNCG Sinfonia. She is the author of Teaching Strings in Today’s Classroom and is published in Journal of Research in Music Education, International Journal of Music Education, Bulletin for the Council of Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, String Research Journal, Psychology of Music, The Strad, American String Teachers Journal, and various state music education journals. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education, the String Research Journal, and as guest reviewer for the International Journal of Research in Music Education. She is the recipient of the UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance Outstanding Teaching Award, the American String Teacher Association National Researcher Award, and the UNCG Junior Research Excellence Award. A passionate advocate for increasing access to string education to all students, Dr. MacLeod directs two community partnership programs that provide string instruction to underserved students: the Lillian Rauch Beginning Strings Program and the Peck Alumni Leadership Program. Students of these programs have performed for Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Gloria Ladsen-Billings, and the Sphinx Virtuosi. Her research on working with underserved populations, vibrato technique, music teacher education, and music perception has been presented at the International Conference of Music Perception and Cognition (Thessoloniki, Greece), Music Research and Human Behavior International Conference (Barcelona, Spain), International Society for Music Education (Glasgow, Scotland), Music Educators National Conference, National Association for Music Education National Conference, American String Teachers National Conference, Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, Society for Music Teacher Education, and music educators state conferences. Prior to joining the UNCG faculty, she taught elementary, middle, and high school orchestra in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania and was orchestra director and chair of music activities in Beaver, Pennsylvania. She was the assistant artistic director and conductor of the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra in Tallahassee, Florida. She has served on the American String Teachers Association National Board and is past president of the North Carolina ASTA chapter. She was a guest lecturer at Xi’an University and Shaoguan University (China) in summer 2016 and 2017. Dr. MacLeod received her undergraduate degree from Duquesne University and her MME and PhD from Florida State University. She is a frequent guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and abroad.
DR. DAVID POPE
Dr. David Pope is associate professor of music education and chair of the professional studies department at the Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music. In addition, he serves as an education clinician for Alfred Music and as the American String Teachers Association’s national conference chair. Prior to joining the faculty of Baldwin Wallace, Pope taught middle- and high-school orchestra for 11 years in Tennessee, Florida and Ohio. He also conducted the Camerata Orchestra at Case Western Reserve University, taught string pedagogy courses at the VanderCook College of Music and served as conductor and executive director of multiple youth orchestra programs. As an active adjudicator and clinician, Pope has conducted numerous all-state orchestras, regional honor orchestras and university summer camps throughout the United States. He has presented string pedagogy clinics and his research at state, regional, national and international conferences. Pope’s work has been published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, String Research Journal, Research Perspectives in Music Education, Missouri Journal of Research in Music Education, Music Educators Journal, American String Teacher and Florida Music Director. He currently serves on the review committees for Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, String Research Journal and Research Perspectives in Music Education. He received the Distinguished Music Educator Award from the Yale Symposium for Music in Schools and is recipient of the Outstanding Young Music Educator Award for the state of Tennessee. Pope was the recipient of the String Researcher Award from the American String Teachers Association at their national conference in March 2020.
TECHNOLOGY SHAWNA E. LONGO
Shawna E. Longo is the General Music (Music Technology) teacher & Arts Integration Specialist at Durban Avenue School, Hopatcong, NJ. She also serves as the Arts Integration & STEAM Specialist for TMI Education; Coach for The Institute for Arts Integration & STEAM; and Ambassador for Music First & Hal Leonard. She is a clinician and consultant for music education, arts integration, and STEAM. She is also a recipient of the 2019 TeachRock Star Teacher Award, 2019 Ti:ME Music Technology Teacher of the Year Award, 2019 New Jersey Governor’s Award in Arts Education Leadership, 2018 NJMEA Master Music Teacher Award and 2016 Governor’s Educator of the Year for Hopatcong Middle School.
