Frankly, it’s not about what you’re looking at, It’s about what you see. This book will open your eyes to the beauty that’s underneath. Creative and bright, imaginative outright. Yorkshire love bigger.
Introduction Apathetic – an emotionless response, was the welcome I received when I said “I’m from Yorkshire”. Almost branded; I was intrigued to discover why? After they realised that I didn’t wear hobnail boots and that my flat cap was securely left behind, new beginnings were ignited. It became clear that there is a lack of knowledge and a stereotype sitting heavily with the association of Yorkshire. This series of images illustrates the hidden gems that Yorkshire holds. It provides an insight to the region and offers some thought provoking culture that is a million miles away from the stereotypical understanding of the county. A guide on how to see things in a new light. Not to see the landscape as just a field but to see beyond that. Ilkley Moor – my ‘go to’ for a refreshing hit of space and freedom. Allowing escapism of life, where I can focus my mind, an idea, and find clarity. Working in sync, as one with the opportunistic city life. Reflecting and sharing mannerisms At first, this zine presents Yorkshire landscape, architecture and all, in its natural form of autumnal colours. It takes you on a journey exhibiting the emotional connection and relationship between the landscape and the architecture. The aim; to expose the substance and culture of Yorkshire and to explore a creative environment, influence opinions and develop a vision.
Tarred Wi’t Same Brush
Yorkshire born and bred I am. Ever since I were young, my regional identity lay strong, Mocked for my vowels and teased for my t’s If I visited where I thought I longed t’ be. Outsiders peer in with a prejudiced opinion; “Where there’s muck there’s brass”, I hear. Home farms within the broad acres Garlanded with hobnailed boots and tweed; Blazers with a perched flat cap. Bloody minded, brashly outspoken, frugal But friendly. Burdened through branding No cattle in sight. Labelled without meaning Narrow-minded in their Monty python-esque presumptions.
'Their opinion lay as a meaningless fog' Their opinion lay as a meaningless fog. Impeding on my terrain. Us all tarred wi’t same brush Are we really that misconstrued? Can they not see the beauty behind the cliché as clearly as me?
That thee’er Emily Bronte says “But he who dares not grasp the thorn should never crave the rose” In a county where culture is nourished Stems the seed of our dear Marks and Sparks
Dun’t get mi’ wrong Five minutes’ art of tarn. The bricks and mortar of Yorkshire’s Leeds Freedom beckons beyond the uniformed fields sit serene, Rolling moors t’ your heart’s content. Adorned with Victorian treasures often overlooked. Feedin’ the imagination and incubating ideas. No fields in sight. Yet encompassing; Leaving t’ stereotype. Wi’t flat cap an’ all A community, broad minded in outlook Redefining trademarks. A taste of wit, a sound of honesty and a smell Imprinting with intent. of home. A humble beginning of Gods’ own country Like waiting for t’ fog t’ lift, Where the white rose blooms The truth lay open and exposed And nurtures a growth of creativity. Tarred for t’ last time. Worlds apart from the tarred brush-marks. Flourishing fashions, art and then some Thorns daring to pierce pockets of talent.
Filtered grey and misty, the hillside peeks over the chimney tops, shielding the villages. Interlocking dry-stone walls form a patchwork of land, as a backdrop to the clustered terraces, mirroring forests seeded on the horizon. This is Yorkshire to a tee.
Overlooked and forgotten are the connecting cities, brimming with history and tales of once upon a time, full of creative flair and expression. The combination of the two paces of life unite to combine countryside escapism with the vibrancy of the city.
It’s not about what you look at It’s about what you see
What your about to see is a visual representation of a natural form embraced by an emotional connection. The result, a provocative vision of raw photography enhanced to intensify the intrinsic beauty beyond the image. A humble warmth captured within a muted view. Imaginative space that allows freedom, incubation of ideas and a different pace, realms apart but only a few miles in reality. Harmonising trends and patterns between the two worlds, provides a platform to more intimate influences, reflected by the architecture intertwining with nature.
The amplified hue and colour filtered onto the candid image, symbolises the transition in the understanding of the aforethought stereotype. The original landscape portrays a dull reminder of the pre-existing Yorkshire label. In contrast, the injection of colour highlights the beauty that was previously disguised. This new open-minded approach allows Yorkshire to be seen in a new light.
Undressed of rose tinted specs, the allure now figured. Dull and dimmed, a thing of the past. Opinions refreshed and knowledge replenished. Your narrow-minded judgement gently diminished. Creativity embraced with no limit. Imaginations array in only the Yorkshire way.
