CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center joins Get With the Guidelines–Stroke program
C
arePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center has joined American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®– Stroke, a quality improvement program created to help hospital teams provide guideline-based care for stroke patients. . GWTG–Stroke was originally developed from recommendations by the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association and the Brain Attack Coalition. These recommendations led to clinical guidelines for hospital teams to use with the goal of helping speed recovery and reduce death and disability for stroke patients. As a GWTG–Stroke participating hospital, CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center is encouraged to develop a comprehensive system for providing rapid diagnosis and
treatment of stroke when patients are admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain-imaging scans, making neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate. CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center is also increasing its efforts to prevent secondary strokes through the aggressive use of medications such as statins and anti-platelets. Other methods include the treatment of atrial fibrillation and atherosclerosis and management of smoking cessation, weight, exercise, diabetes and cholesterol. Through GWTG–Stroke, the American Stroke Association provides CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center training and staffing recommendations, care maps, discharge protocols, standing orders, data-collection
and measurement tools. The program also facilitates creating and sharing best practices among participating hospitals. “CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center is dedicated to helping our stroke patients have the best possible outcome and implementing the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program will help us accomplish this by making it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis,” said Dr. Erica Frangione-Edfort, NVRNBC, RN-BC, FAHA Stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. About 795,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year, and the number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade.

Carepoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center Cancer Program Accredited By The Commission On Cancer Of The American College Of Surgeons
B
ayonne, NJ – July 2014 The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Three-Year Accreditation to the cancer program at CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center. To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Because it is a CoC-accredited cancer center, CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care. “We rely on a team of cancer specialists to treat a complex group of diseases and achieve improved results for our patients. Our physicians and staff are dedicated to providing the best in patient-centered care according to rigorous national standards,” commented Robbi Kempner, MD, breast surgeon and co-Medical Director of the CarePoint Health Cancer Center. The CoC accreditation affirms our commitment to provide our patients with outstanding and compassionate cancer care on the leading edge of current research, technology, and best practices.” The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework for CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center to improve its quality of patient care through various cancerrelated programs that focus on
the full spectrum of cancer care including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, life-long follow up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care. When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient centered services including psycho-social support, a patient navigation process, and a survivorship care plan that documents the care each patient receives and seeks to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life. Like all CoC-accredited facilities, CarePoint Health – Bayonne Medical Center maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), a joint program of the CoC and American Cancer Society (ACS). This nationwide oncology outcomes database is the largest clinical disease registry in the world. Data on all types of cancer are tracked and analyzed through the NCDB and used to explore trends in cancer care. CoC-accredited cancer centers, in turn, have access to information derived from this type of data analysis, which is used to create national, regional, and state benchmark reports. These reports help CoC facilities with their quality improvement efforts. ACS estimates that more than 1.6 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed in 2013. There are currently more than 1,500 CoCaccredited cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, representing 30 percent of all hospitals. CoCaccredited facilities diagnose and/ or treat more than 70 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients.
When cancer patients choose to seek care locally at a CoC-accredited cancer center, they are gaining access to comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care close to home. The CoC provides the public with information on the resources, services, and cancer treatment experience for each CoCaccredited cancer program through the CoC Hospital Locator at http:// www.facs.org/cancerprogram/index. html.
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. For more information, visit: www.facs.org/cancer

J
ersey City, New Jersey (July, 2014) – CarePoint Health is proud to announce that Christ Hospital is the first hospital in New Jersey to receive the da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System, the latest and most advanced robotics platform in the da Vinci series. This 4th generation robotic platform is a technological leap and a profound step forward in innovation. The intuitive da Vinci Xi has broad capabilities and can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive and complex surgical procedures. The acquisition of the da Vinci Xi represents a breakthrough for health care in New Jersey. The
advancement. According to Dr. Smith, the da Vinci Xi is a milestone for health care in New Jersey. “This is truly the wave of the future. We have the most sophisticated tool available to provide patients with superior and innovative surgical care. The da Vinci robot enables a surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. We can now seamlessly integrate our surgical skills with the latest technology.” For more than a decade, the da Vinci surgical systems have provided patients with a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery that reduces many of the costs and complications associated with open procedures. The new da Vinci Xi system was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery for complex diseases and conditions in gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac, and general surgery. By enabling more efficient access throughout the abdomen and chest, the da Vinci Xi System expands upon core da Vinci System features, including wristed instruments, 3D-HD visualization, intuitive motion and an ergonomic design. As with all da Vinci Surgical Systems, the da Vinci Xi System’s immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient. In addition, the da Vinci Xi includes the powerful da Vinci Skills Simulator, a new virtual-reality tool that helps train surgeons to use the robotics platform. Simulation in all forms is becoming an important part of the learning experience for surgical
technology. By providing a controlled recreation of critical steps in instrument control, simulation allows surgeons to practice their skills in a nonclinical environment that once required expensive models or cadavers for learning. The da Vinci Skills Simulator provides surgeons with objective feedback on their performance when they complete an exercise. Over time, surgeons can track their progress on the device and work to improve their skills before they use it on patients. About Dr. Daniel H. Smith Unique in his training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, GYN Oncology, and General Surgery, Dr. Daniel H. Smith brings broad technical experience to women with severe gynecologic problems. At CarePoint Health, he leads Gynecologic Oncology and General Gynecology. Dr. Smith is one of the first gynecologists certified to use the da Vinci robotics platform, and he offers this additional level of minimally invasive surgery to his patients. Dr. Smith is also committed to other aspects of minimally invasive surgery such as single port laparoscopy complex gynecologic problems. Originally from Oklahoma, Dr. Smith graduated from both Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He began his General Surgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. During this surgical residency, which he completed in 1979, he also completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Los Angeles
County/USC Medical Center. Following his planned trajectory, he then completed a Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Smith has practiced in both New York and New Jersey. He is active in teaching and attained the first Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology in New Jersey. About the da Vinci Surgical System The da Vinci Surgical System and the Skills Simulator are developed by Intuitive Surgical Inc. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. is the global technology leader in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. The company’s da Vinci Surgical System offers surgeons superior visualization, enhanced dexterity and greater precision compared to traditional surgical approaches. More than 500,000 patients worldwide affected by a range of conditions have had a da Vinci procedure. The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even complex procedures such as open-heart surgery through 1-2 cm incisions. Founded in 1995, Intuitive Surgical has more than 1,300 employees in offices around the world.
