1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Three main topics are discussed and practiced through the semester, which are Plot/Line/Plane, mass, and frame & infill. As applying the three tectonic concepts to the design, I find that they are interconnected. Plot/Line/Plane forms frame&infill, and multiple frame&infill combining will build mass structure. Again, the mass structure can be seen as plot, line, or plane in different scale. Three concepts are developed via different madia to maximize their unique characteristics and features.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE My model for P/L/P has two different parts, one is crowed and the other one is loose. I used fishing wire to connect two different parts to create a sense of tension, which is also a representation of line. Both parts consist of single traingle pieces, the edges of the triangles are also a representation of line. However, the plot is not well developed in the model. For the model, I really want to explore the light effect and shadows, so I orientate traingle pieces randomly(loose one) to create different effect. I am also inspired by puzzle for thr corwded part.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

I am inspired by the electron clouds for my model. Multiple frames in different sizes and dimensions are made. I cut out holes on the central infill to let frame through to create overlapping. Central infill is made of translucent plastics to create blurring feeling, which responses to “ a place of keeping secrets. Also, each frame extends to different distance because holes on infill are all in different hight. The whole object is placed in angle because it will be more stable in that case, and it also creats interesting shadows.

1.3 MASS I really try to explore the light effect underground and the human experience in the drawing. I am inspired by Voussoir Cloud, so I add those volumes on the ceiling all the way down in different length to create a sense of cave. Also, the differences on length of volumes help with the human experience. I also want to explore the contrast between solid and void in the drawing. The color of those solid “columns are darker than those background space, especially the edges. For the light effect, I make a skylight on the top right because it is the innermost part of the cave.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

The location of Herring Island makes it a perfect place od keeping secrets. The site is all surrounded by yarra river, which can already block most noise from the nearest highway or living areas. The site is quite flat, so it will be a great place to create underground space. Also, there are about 60% vegetation on site, and this will help develop the concept better. The sculpture on site can be a good media or resources to start my design. The circulation and human density are two main issues that will affect the design. A quite space can be a place of keeping secrets, and a busy area can be a secret place as well with specific designs, materials, or construction. Meanwhile, there are some slopes on the edge of the site, which are also good for create a place of keeping secrets.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

I am inspired by Egyptian ancient true pyramids, which have a lot of chambers in different dimensions and levels. In order to make my design a place of keeping secrets, I tend to make it a secret place in both physical and psychological ways. Physically, the entrance is really difficult to find because it is really far away from the main activity area. Also, people can se solid cube with platforms from the outside, and they cannot find the entrance. They know somethin is inside; however, they cannot get there, which also responses to the strcuture of pyramids. Psychologically, all chambers are connected by a long hallway all underground, and the sunlight cannot reach. This will create a sense of danger. People will feel afraid and scared when they are at the entrance of the hallway. This is also responding to the pyramids because they contain a lot of triggers and concealed weapons, which make people scared.

3.0 REFLECTION Overall, I am pretty satisfied with my design outcome and result, and I think I am doing a good job on the project. However, there are a lot of things that I can improve and be aware during the design process. First, I think I need improve more on my diagramming and digital model-making techinques because skectches and drawings are the only way I can show my clients or audience my ideas and thoughts. The first impression takes a big role on the final evaluation. I think my drawing in presentation board are too messy, lineweights are too light to see from certain distance, and background colors of the measured drawings are really distracting. In order to improve that, simple line drawings with hatching and heavy line weights will help. Also, some specific diagrams are really necessary based on designs. For example, I need an exploded isometric to show access of my design because it is mainly underground. Then I feel that I need focus more on brief because with those “restriction, I will think my design more thoroughly. When I am doing my design, I sometimes feel that I just put something there by chance. I think I should really spend more time on understanding brief first to make a good design. Although the design thinking process is long and difficult for me, I learn a lot from this project. With the project, I can apply all three tectonic concepts to my design to create interesting effects and results. Also, I learn how to manage my time through the project because I am usually a last-minute person. Meanwhile, I think both of my oral presentation and model-making skills are well developed and improved through the subject. For me, the most challenging part of the subject is the part of conceptacle making and ideas generating. I am really confused about the term first, and I don’t know where I should start it. I think one way to overcome it is to do it first, and then generate or develop ideas from what I am doing. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the project and the process of it because it is my first time to experience a large former final project like this, which brings me a lot of new thoughts and plans for the future design studios.
