The Help / Dir. Tate Taylor, 2011 I must admit at first I thought ‘The Help’ was one of those whiny films - but never judge a book on it’s cover ! It deserves its oscar. The story is about a girl (great Emma Stone) craving to become a journalist during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Very minded and humane, she decides to write a book gathering stories of the African-American maids’ point of view on the white families for which they work. The script is based on Kathryn Stockett’s book ‘The Help’ that was rejected sixty times before it was eventually published. The directing and narrative are very well thought and uplifting, a hint of humour when it could get too heavy, a nudge to the viewer giving away clues before the characters get them to make him feel clever ... Beautiful set, beautiful light, emotional story, perfect casting. Tate Taylor, mostly known for his acting career, only directed two features and one short, all won prizes.

Sort of a mystical spatial ritual, or conceptual dream, the director took his inspiration in modern dances, shamanism and astrophysical phenomena. And it goes perfectly with the slick, essential and powerful result thanks to the black & white process. ‘Bye bye Macadam’ is the quickest song of the ‘Tohu Bohu’ album Rone wrote. He basically recorded his girlfriend’s voice and added the gimmick being half drunk one night. The day after, although hungover, he was quite happy with the result !

The event started on a small beach of San Francisco with few guys, now almost 50 000 attend. It’s even called ‘Black Rock city’ when it’s on, as the new location is in the Black Rock desert - People from everywhere make the journey to this desert for one week to be part of this kind of experimental community, where what is expected of you is to express yourself to a degree that is not normally encountered, and rely on each other for the rest. The event is really well organized, has a specific theme every year, and everyone is more ‘participant’ than an ‘attendee’ as everything is based on volunteering - volunteers that usually stay up to a month after the city dissolves, to clean up and leave the desert like nothing ever happened. It’s like a utopia, living in a dream cut off from the world in a timeless spaceless zone.
