MOVIE

Holy Motors / Dir. Leos Carax, 2012 Won twelve awards and had three nominations, though it’s not one of those “let’s make a film to win awards, I need that on my CV” kind of films. Carax’ work is the kind that you are told you have to see when you’re in film school - I tried with this one. Here we have a one-day journey of a man, putting different costumes on to move from one life to the next in a limo, as his job is to embody different characters. There are no links or story besides this so if you’re waiting for a logical narrative you’ll find yourself sleeping. Undoubtedly well shot, graded, lit and played, the whole movie can feel a bit like a series of metaphysical questions or a personal joke that excludes the viewer. It has this “it’s more visual than narrative” quality, and almost a stress to be shocking that is clumsy in places. Many find a “Lynch” like quality, simply enjoy the good things they see and overlook the rest. I personally don’t, but it’s up to you to make your opinion.

PROMO

Caution, strong language in this one. New music video for Dizzee Rascal, and a rather good one. The artist has always tried to go outside the common clichés for his promos and explored new things. You can’t really go wrong when you call the French guys collective MEGAFORCE to direct it. A good energy, clever enough, fun, well directed, effective. It does it’s job perfectly - and you really can tell, because if ever you listen to the track without the video, you realise how good the video works.. Finally we still get a bit of the pedantic “we’re too cool for you” vibe, but I guess it’s the signature of the collective by now.

E. Oda is a Brazilian multi disciplinary artist living in L.A, he likes exploring and combining new techniques for his (various) projects. In “Malaria”, he cleverly gives us motion when our eyes are so trained to expect stillness from a comic. Plus it’s done with good spirit and fun which adds to the entertainment of the story in itself ! Great stuff.

the

As the director descibes it himself : “this short film combines origami, kirigami, time lapse, nankin illustration, comic books and western cinema.” And it does it really well.
