ith all eyes on the East Village, it might be the historic west end of downtown Calgary that soon starts stealing headlines. A redevelopment plan for the West Village, approved by council in July 2010, is set to transform the 45-hectare area on the edge of Calgary’s core, a former bedroom community that has roots dating back to the early 19th century. The plan has resurfaced in recent months with WAM Development Group proposing a four-tower, 1,800-luxury-suite condo project on the current site of the Metro Ford dealership along Ninth Avenue S.W. Bordered today by the Bow River to the north, 11th Street to the east, Ninth Avenue to the south and Crowchild Trail to the west, the West Village’s story begins, largely, with the stately Mewata Armoury. Anchoring the area along 11th Street, it was completed in
1918 after three years of construction in accordance with the federal government’s late 19th-century initiatives to build militia practice and training recruitment centres. “Between the world wars, Calgary was the centre of a military district that included both permanent force units (headquarters and B Squadron of Lord Strathcona’s Horse Regiment) and part-time militia (the Calgary Highlanders and the Calgary Regiment, among other units),” said local historian Harry Sanders. In 1923, the Royal Canadian Navy established a reserve unit that proved popular for prairie boys. Budget austerity delayed construction of a permanent force barracks, and, for over a decade and a half, the Strathconas occupied the armoury that had been designed for militia use. In 1936, the permanent force moved to the new Currie Barracks, and the militia units finally took possession of Mewata Armouries.
