Business Recently, we had a visit from Joe Max Higgins. You may not know much about Mr. Higgins, but he comes from the Golden Triangle of Mississippi where he has been recognized nationally as one of the most successful economic developers in the country. Last month, KCEDA had the pleasure to feature Mr. Higgins at a Speakeasy event. Although we were not sure what he would talk to us about, my hope was that he would be able to reinforce that KCEDA is on the right track. He did just that. He gave our staff rave reviews and told us to keep up the good work. He was impressed with our available opportunities and the problem solving solutions we have been able to produce for our clients, making evident that KCEDA approaches economic development efforts with creativity, precision and passion. Kingsley celebrates Blue Zones designation From a news release KINGSLEY FIELD — The 173rd Fighter Wing celebrated Kingsley Field’s designation as a Blue Zones Project approved worksite last week with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a Sentry Eagle 5K run/ walk, according to a news release.

Following a ribbon cutting ceremony, led by fighter wing Commander Col. Jeff Smith, airmen from around the base and their families participated in the 5K run/ walk.

This event was put together by the fighter wing’s Comprehensive Airman Fitness team. CAF is a holistic concept that focuses on taking care of airmen and their families by focusing on four pillars of fitness: mental, social, physical and spiritual.

Blue Zones Project is a community-led well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to a city’s environment, policy, and social networks. The Blue Zones approved worksite designation is the result of CAF teamwork over the last few months.

“Being a Blue Zones Project approved worksite means the 173rd Fighter Wing has intentionally prioritized the well-being of its members through the implementation of research-based best practices,” said Jessie Hecocta, Blue Zones Project — Klamath Falls organization lead.

“The purpose is to create leaders who role model well-being behaviors and create an environment which supports the health of others. It also means that the organization supports employees in pursuing their purpose and connecting that purpose in the context of their work.”

To achieve this designation, the team focused on multiple objectives such as designating a space for employees to quietly reflect, publish walking/running routes, and many others.

Additionally, the team found ways to quantify best practices that the wing was already accomplishing that fit in the Blue Zones Project goals.

Running Y’s new downtown restaurant opens Aug. 1 From a news release The new Apatite Restaurant in Klamath Falls will open its doors for the grand opening at 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 1.

Located at 106 Main St., the eatery was named for the blue gemstone, apatite, furthering the blue theme established with the naming of its parent hotel right next door, Cerulean Hotel, which opened earlier this year. Apatite restaurant and Cerulean Hotel are both owned by Running Y Properties.

The chic, renovated space includes a full bar and lounge with a menu ranging from inventive cocktails to the most popular craft beers and fine wines from the region and around the world.

Executive Chef Matt Renshaw said, “Our menu will feature many Asian fusion dishes along with American classics. Incorporating fresh, local ingredients is critical to our culinary team, which will be apparent in every Matt Renshaw dish.”

The culinary team includes Michael Rogers and Michael Evans. Rogers joined the Running Y Properties team in April of 2017. With an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management, Rogers will be the director of restaurant services for Apatite restaurant.

Rogers brings more than 30 years of experience to the table with humble beginnings as a steward at North’s Chuck Wagon at the age of 15. In his new role with Apatite, Rogers will oversee the wait staff, kitchen staff, and day-to-day operations of the restaurant.

Michael Evans will be the sous chef for Apatite. Evans worked as a poissonier at Bouchon Bistro under Thomas Keller in California, and chef de partie at The Progress under Chef Stuart Brioza in San Francisco and bird dog under Chef Robbie Wilson in the Silicon Valley.

Breakfast includes everything from regional favorites to American classics including granola, berries, egg dishes and Asian fusion scrambles.

The extensive lunch/dinner menu offers a Bibimbap Rice Bowl, Apatite Burger, Seared Pacific Salmon, Baby Back Ribs, a variety of inventive Asianinspired noodle dishes and many other offerings.

The happy hour menu has items priced from $2 to $6 and includes Tempura Artichoke Hearts, Apatite Burger and Bahn Mi Sandwich among other options.

Apatite will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

KCC cements commitment to workforce development From a news release A new partnership will put Klamath Community College at the front line of regional workforce development, according to a press release.

In June, the KCC Board of Education unanimously voted to enter into a $594,000 contract to provide WIOA Title 1B employment training services to adults and youth in Klamath and Lake counties.

Under the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) contract, KCC will deliver career and training services to dislocated workers and adult job seekers. For out-of-school youth and young adults age 16 to 24, programs will focus on job training and establishing pathways to higher education.

“Providing access to education and job training resources is a top priority for KCC,” said KCC President Roberto Gutierrez. “Entering this contract furthers KCC’s commitment to the community and ensures more community members will have access to resources for achieving the success they envision.”

KCC Workforce Development Director Charles “Chip” Massie said KCC will now be a partner to the Klamath Falls WorkSource Center and will deliver comprehensive year-round adult and dislocated worker services. Services for young adults will include developing individual career/employment plans based on interest assessments, educational needs, as well as short- and long-term goals.

“KCC can now provide more resources to help community members of all ages and backgrounds jump-start new careers or seek promotion in current jobs,” Massie said.

The East Cascades Workforce Investment Board (ECWIB) manages WIOA employment training services across a 10-county region in Central Oregon. ECWIB staff will work closely with KCC workforce development to ensure a smooth of transition services and programming, Massie said.

Mia & Pia’s began as a local business in 1987, opening as a pizza parlor in Keno, by Don and Nancy Kucera, with the help of nephew Gary Wilson and son Rod Kucera and wife Jodi. In 1988, the business opened its current pizza shop on Summers Lane.

On Jan. 1, 1997, Mia & Pia’s became Klamath County’s first brewery, according to a news release, starting with six styles brewed in the converted dairy barn on the family farm on Matney Road and transported by keg to the pizza parlor on Summers Lane.

The next big change to the business was eliminating the adjoining laundromat and converting the space into a bar area to showcase the microbrews.

Since then Mia & Pia’s brewery has grown to offer 13 styles of beer on tap.

Klamath Eye Center adds Diversify investments, native son physician FINANCIAL FOCUS

consolidate providers You have probably heard that diversification is a key to investment success.

So, you might think that if diversifying your investments is a good idea, it might also be wise to diversify your investment providers – after all, aren’t two (or more) heads better than one?

Before we look at that issue, let’s consider the first half of the “diversification” question – namely, how does diversifying your investment portfolio help you?

Consider the two broadest categories of investments: stocks and bonds.

Stock prices will move up and down in response to many different factors, including good or bad corporate earnings, corporate management issues, political developments and even natural disasters.

Bond prices are not immune to these dynamics, but they are usually more strongly driven by changes in interest rates.

To illustrate: If your existing bond pays 2 percent interest, and new bonds are being issued at 3 percent, the value of your bond will fall, because no one will pay you full price for it. (Of course, it may not matter to you anyway, especially if you planned to hold your bond until maturity, at which point you can expect to get your full investment back, providing the bond issuer doesn’t default.)

Here’s the key point: Stocks and bonds often move in different directions. If you only own U.S. stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn, but if you own domestic and international stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other types of investments, your portfolio may be better protected against market volatility, and you’ll have more opportunities for positive results. (Keep in mind, though, that even a diversified portfolio can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.)

So, it clearly is a good idea to

diversify your investment portfolio.

Now, let’s move on to diversifying financial service providers. Why shouldn’t you have one IRA here and another one there, or enlist one advisor to help you with some types of investments and a different advisor assisting you with others?

Actually, some good reasons exist to consider consolidating all your investment accounts with one provider. For one thing, you’ll keep better track of your assets. Many people do misplace or forget about some of their savings and investments, but this will be far less likely to happen to you if you hold all your accounts in one place.

Also, if you have accounts with several different financial service providers, you might be incurring a lot of paperwork – and many fees. You can cut down on clutter and expense by consolidating your accounts.

But most important, by placing all your accounts with a single provider, possibly under the supervision of a single financial advisor, you will find it much easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy, based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

You won’t get conflicting advice and you’ll receive clear guidance on important issues, such as the amounts you can afford to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts once you do retire.

Diversification and consolidation – one is good for building an investment portfolio, while the other can help you invest more efficiently and effectively.

Put the two concepts together, and make them work for you.

Klamath Eye Center announces the addition of Dr. Jonathan Fay to its practice starting in July.

Dr. Fay is pleased to return home to Klamath Falls. He joins his father, Dr. Mark Fay, and Dr. Scott Stevens in the practice of ophthalmology at Klamath Eye Center.

Fay’s areas of expertise are in cornea and external eye disease including: cataract surgery, cornea transplants, corneal degenerations, infectious diseases, and LASIK. He also provides comprehensive care to patients with diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

After graduating from Klamath Union High School, Fay attended college at Duke University in Durham, N.C., where he was recognized for his academic and athletic performance in track and field.

He then attended medical school at Oregon Health and Science University and internship at Legacy Health System in Portland.

Fay continued his training in ophthalmology residency at Montefiore Medical Center of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He then went on to

This is the new political power; the legislature is just their machinery.

Spending Money with Reckless Abandon According to the National Endowment for Financial Education, nearly 70 percent of all people who win a big lottery prize end up completely broke within a couple of years.

The single-minded goal is always bigger government and more public spending, but the bill for this spending is being pushed onto future generationÕs tabs. Currently, our stateÕs revenue exceeds all expectations. Oregon gathered billions more into the stateÕs coffers than ever expected. Personal income tax revenue is up, corporate revenue is up, property tax contributions are up, even marijuana sales tax cash ßows are now pumping into the revenue stream.

The Legislative Fiscal OfÞce released numbers last week which tell a story of $10K spending per capita for the next biennium, without including other fee, license or permit expenses that one could encounter running a business in Oregon.

Where does all of that money go?

At what cost? How many other states, county and municipal governments have promised more than they can provide? Will Oregon follow IllinoisÕ perilous journey?

First, Oregon must learn to live within its means and second, taxpayers deserve a break. All it takes is a clear strategy for maintaining economic growth over the next decade.

I say, ÒEnough is enough!Ó Regular people must balance their checkbooks, live within their means and save to plan for their futures. OregonÕs citizens must continue to demand the same diligence from our State Government.

This strategy would include allowing businesses to thrive and prosper rather than seeing businesses as a never-ending source of booty.

Sustained economic growth dynamically contributes to increased opportunities along with good-paying jobs that contribute mightily to the public coffers. So then, letÕs allow people to
