How to Recognize and Cultivate the Three Essential Virtues
S m rt a
In the first quarterly magazine released in March, we introduced the book The Ideal Team Player. The book outlines three main virtues: Humble, Hungry, Smart. As food for thought, each quarterly magazine will contain a letter written by a Gerber colleague spotlighting one of the three virtues. Last quarter, we featured highlight on humility. This quarter, Iasmin Acioli, Executive Support to CEO & Strategic Process Manager, shares her thoughts on how to achieve the perfect level of drive and motivation, conveyed as being “hungry”.
THE IDEAL APPETITE
By: Iasmin Acioli, Executive Support to CEO & Strategic Process Manager What does it mean to be hungry? Certainly we all know what having a craving for food is, but there are a multitude of meanings of the word “hungry”. When talking about your own traits, being hungry doesn’t mean thinking about what you’re going to order for lunch today; rather, being hungry means always looking for more in life and always looking to improve. If you are hungry, you likely have a strong work ethic. You do a great job, but want to do better. Being hungry means going above and beyond and never settling for the bare minimum. It means having a high standard for yourself and your work. Being hungry makes you a great part of a team because you strive for advancement and accomplishment for the greater good! It means you are usually engaged, self-motivated, responsible, and goal-oriented. Hungry people get stuff done and tend to do it well! What happens when you become the metaphorical “hangry” (the dangerous and cranky combination of “hungry” and “angry”)? It may mean finishing a whole bag of chips in one sitting, but it may also mean bulldozing the people around you. As with anything in life, being hungry also requires balance. Someone who is too hungry might prioritize work over everything else and become the classic “workaholic”. Even worse, too much hunger without humility or “people smarts” turns into selfishness. If you are hungry but not a team player, you become a bulldozer. A bulldozer is someone who will get their goals accomplished at any cost while neglecting their team mates, family, and friends. This type of person is very ambitious but can often make others feel inferior. 4
GERBER
How can you find the balance between being a bump on a log with no appetite and a ravenous bulldozer? This requires a lot of self-reflection, in which you have to allow yourself to think about what motivates you and how you can accomplish your goals without stepping on any toes. The good news is that you do not have to take this task on yourself; ask those around you for help! As with any team, if you want to improve, you will need a coach. Turn to those closest to you and turn them into your coaches! Ask the people in your life for candid feedback and take that advice with humility, and with the goal of bettering yourself. Trust that the people you surround yourself with want what is best for you. The day you humble yourself to others’ advice, is the day that you can truly open up your doors and become the best and hungriest version of yourself. Allow yourself to be open to constructive criticism and chew on the advice you receive so that you may digest that information and grow. If you do not have that innate hunger and drive, find someone who is hungry and ask them to push you. If you find yourself bulldozing over others for your goals, ask that those around you to put you in check when this happens. Rely on your coaches to make you a better player on the team! So what does being hungry mean at Gerber? It means always striving for the best results and performance, all while keeping the customer at the forefront. If there is something we can do better, we want to hear from the field and from the customers we service, and take that feedback to heart. We can only continue to be a strong team if we hold each other accountable and listen to our coaches, both inside and outside the company. Together we can all grow and become the ideal team players within the Gerber family by dishing up a plate full of motivation and drive, with a side of humility.
