$QFKRUDJH 0D\RU·V Marathon

June 21, Fairbanks

June 22, Anchorage

The Midnight Sun Game tradition dates back to the earliest days of Fairbanks, Alaska. For over a century, a special baseball game has annually been held in Fairbanks on June 21. On the longest day of each year (with a full 24 hours of daylight in the vast Tanana Valley), Fairbanksans celebrate the coming of summer with the playing of this traditional game–which continues through the midnight hour and never uses artificial lights. With Fairbanks a mere 150 miles south of the Arctic Circle, the sun is just beginning to set in the North as the game of baseball gets underway and, at its conclusion some three hours later, the sun begins to rise again–also in the North.

The longest day of the year means a long distance race for many in Anchorage. Organized by the University of Alaska Anchorage and Anchorage Parks & Recreation, five running races are held simultaneously - including the Midnight Sun Marathon (26.2 miles), Alaska Half Marathon (13.1 miles), a marathon relay (4 x 6.5 mile legs), Coastal 5K and Buddy Half Marathon, in which teams of two or three runners split the half marathon course into sections relay style.

Bear Paw Festival July 10-14, Chugiak-Eagle River

The whole town turns out for a weekend filled with fun for all ages. Sometimes unexpected but always a good time, events run the gamut. The Slippery Salmon Olympics are perhaps the best-known event. Teams of two race against the clock and each other with a real salmon as the critical item to take along while tackling all the obstacles. www.bearpawfestival.com

The annual weekend music festival for the whole family held annually at Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost returns. Chickenstock takes place in the quirky remote town of Chicken, which is completely off grid and there are no public services available such as telephone, Internet, cell towers, electricity, water, trash, flush toilets, sewer, Wi-Fi, grocery stores, and convenience stores within 100 mile radius. Come prepared to be self-sufficient for all-weather camping. There will be food trucks, as well as local brews and a selection of wines available inside the gates. There also will be local craft venders selling their wares. www.chickenstockmusicfest. com

June 22, Anchorage

Midnight Sun Festival June 23, Fairbanks

This annual event sees more than 30,000 people pack downtown for 12 hours of fun under the midnight sun. Food trucks from across the state come out to supply the masses with sweet treats, ethnic cuisine, snacks and drinks for the whole family. Shoppers can find treasures to purchase with endless amounts of Made in Alaska items, jewelry, art, pottery, clothing and a variety of home goods. Activities are sprinkled around the event with a gold panning booth, pony rides, car smash, skate park and even a midway on 4th Avenue.

Downtown turns into one big celebration on June 22, 2019, with the Solstice Festival & Hero Games, an Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. Production, taking over Fourth Avenue and Town Square. Artists, musicians and other performers transform Fourth Avenue into a party. The Children’s Rainbow Factory, which includes puppet shows, a kayak pool, and giant sandbox, just to name a few! www.anchorage.net

The energy-filled games of the far north are simply amazing. Endurance, agility and a bit of magic are all in the mix when viewing the sporting events and the athletes going for the gold. The Alaskan high kick, knuckle hop and the four-man carry are just three of the many athletic events that boggle the mind. Imagine hopping on bare knuckles across an unforgiving floor or flying 8 feet into the air to kick a sealskin ball. In addition to the extraordinary games at the Carlson Center are the pageant events where beautiful gifted Native women vie for a crown of walrus ivory and whale baleen. www.explorefairbanks.com/ events

Being so remote, especially in Kodiak, can make the simplest things tougher. Travel is expensive and time-consuming and dependent on weather. As a student athlete, away games are a challenge; you can’t just hop on a bus and drive to the nearest high school. In Kodiak you must take either plane or ferry to be able to go compete against another team. We also don’t have all the same opportunities you may experience in big cities. Island life isn’t always the easiest but it has made me tough and adventurous. My family has served three separate tours in Alaska. I think the hardest part for me and other military children are the miles that separate extended family. I grew up separated from the rest of my family, sometimes even separated from my dad. It would have been great having those big family Thanksgiving dinners and Christmases you see in movies. But when I do get to see them, it makes the time with my family even more special. It’s hard work, art and physicality all together with music.” Ballet student Krista Simpler says, “Dance forces me to be in the present. You have to focus on what you’re doing, and it makes you forget anything negative that’s happened during the day. You can let it all go.” When she bought the building, Loewen repainted with the blue shades of tropical diving destinations, favorite adventure spots before her travel budget went to dance trainings and conventions. She remodeled to create a homework room and a waiting room full of children’s books. To encourage boys to enroll, she added hip-hop and tumbling classes to the roster of rhythm and movement, ballet, musical theatre, ballroom, tap, jazz and contemporary dance. “It’s a very creative environment. It’s a place kids can go and be themselves and express themselves and spend time with their peers. It’s a great gift to the community,” says instructor Cory Rusch. Dance is a structured, disciplined creativity, and that appeals to Loewen. It mirrors her personality—her high expectations for herself and others, a merging of art and intellect.

“Freedom comes from technique,” she tells her students. “Once you master a skill, it’s easier to dance and express artistry because you aren’t struggling with the steps.” We are talking in the studio foyer ^OLU ZOL ZWV[Z [^V IHSSLYPUHZ NVVÄ UN VɈ PU JSHZZ HUK JYHJRZ [OL KVVY Q\Z[ wide enough to whisper-yell, “PAY ATTENTION!” with a look that stops the girls immediately. “We’re teaching responsibility and resilience, how to work at it and not get MY\Z[YH[LK [OL Ä YZ[ [PTL `V\ MHPS H[ ZVTL thing. My feeling is that kids don’t get that much anymore. You have to keep at it.” Loewen was born in Kotzebue and grew up in the Kodiak Island village of Old Harbor. She came to dance late, signing up for classical ballet as a freshman at Kodiak High School. She loved the challenge of technical footwork, even [OV\NO ZOL Z[Y\NNSLK H[ Ä YZ[ [V JH[JO \W with students her age. “I left every class [OL Ä YZ[ TVU[O PU [LHYZ ILJH\ZL 0 ^HZ frustrated and it was so hard.” She wrote Peter Pan on the bottoms of her dance shoes to inspire herself to jump higher. MaryBeth Loewen spends her free time exploring the beaches and trails of her coastal home.

For those hours when I’m teaching, everything else is gone. I can go in the worst mood, and when I come out, I’m in the best mood.” “A lot of times, our passions don’t pay.
