ACCELERATE

Dear Reader, Dear Reader, welcome to the latest edition of our AHK Accelerate Magazine, where we share with you our in-depth industry insights and critical developments we see on the horizon.

As Australia is finally on track to join the netzero community and to contribute to our planet’s sustainable future, some domestic industries are ready to change their modus operandi to uphold their social licence to operate and business viability. The Australian Mining and Resources Industry has, as their counterparts did in many countries before them, a significant task ahead of them. This edition’s main article shines a light on some of the sector’s challenges, and

it outlines some fantastic opportunities that arise from new technology – something that the German coal mining industry, for example, could not fall back on back in the day of our Kohle Strukturreform. In trade-related matters, recent geostrategic developments may impact progress in the ongoing Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations; read Dr Michael Zettinig’s article for an update on proceedings.

Personally I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in person soon again! Thanks and kindest regards,

CHRISTOPH VON SPESSHARDT Executive Director christoph.spesshardt@ germany.org.au

Border Closures Still Impacting GermanAustralian Businesses By Dr Michael Zettinig, German-Australian Chamber

The ongoing Australian travel restrictions are increasingly impacting the operation of GermanAustralian businesses and the very high freight costs are an additional burden.

10

ACCELERATE

In response to the global COVID developments, the Australian Government effectively closed the Australian border in March 2020 except for travellers with special permits. After more than 16 months, the restrictions have only gotten tighter, with strictly limited spots available for the mandatory minimum 14-days hotel quarantine and narrower definitions of essential travel. Aside from the impact on families with close ties overseas, this has also increasingly negatively impacted the German-Australian business community. Many international businesses rely on the exchange of key experts to transfer skills to local staff. In addition, they rely on Australian staff to visit the company headquarters in

Travel is still essential to build trust with new key partners or customers or to enable international career development.

with me if you currently experience such challenges and discuss how the Chamber can assist you. However, the Chamber cannot provide legal advice and highly recommends you to also work with a migration agent if it is an international travel matter. Through our Governmental Affairs work, we have been able to organise support letters in case of essential travel – the requirements for such support letters from Government partners are obviously quite high, and the requirements on how to prove the essential nature has become even higher in the last few weeks with the reduced Australian arrival caps. We are thankful for the support of our work by our government partners. What surprises many companies contacting us from Germany is that Australia still requires a minimum of 14 days of hotel quarantine, even for fully vaccinated and negatively tested persons, which negatively impacts German businesses considering increased trade and investment with Australia. We advocate for easier processes to enable essential international travel, for example, through home quarantine or other measures that facilitate increased safe travel between Australia and Germany. In this, we support the plan by the Australian Government to open up international travel, at least for vaccinated travellers, once Australia hits 80% of eligible persons being vaccinated. Opening up Australia is essential for Australia’s long-term prosperity and reputation.

Germany to collaborate in-person and to experience the company culture. Of course, many traditional face-toface discussions and activities have been, often successfully, replaced with online meetings or webinars, just like we have done at the German-Australian Chamber. However, often travel is still essential either to build trust with new key partners/customers, to provide highly specialist installations/maintenance or to enable international career development. Therefore, the German-Australian Chamber has been supporting GermanAustralian businesses since March 2020 to address essential intra-state and international travel. Please get in touch

Governmental Affairs

We advocate for easier processes to enable essential international travel between Germany and Australia. Besides the travel restrictions, many German-Australian businesses are also impacted by restrictions and cost increases in terms of international freight. This impact on their supply chains has been quite severe in some cases and is expected to continue for several more months. This is a matter where it is essential for businesses to work closely with their logistics supplier and discuss transport requirements as early as possible. On a separate matter, I also want to give a quick update about the Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. Despite the COVID travel restrictions, the negotiations are continuing via video conference. Each formal negotiation round is expanded from one week to two weeks to account for slower negotiations via video. The last FTA round was round eleven from 1-11 June; the twelfth round is

12

ACCELERATE

currently expected for February 2022, but due to the controversy following the AUKUS announcement, is currently not fully confirmed. Please find the summary of the 11th negotiation round here. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that major hurdles still exist to conclude the negotiations. This is for several reasons, including that the FTA will be a comprehensive agreement covering both tariff and non-tariff trade barriers and addressing aspects such as sustainable trade, agriculture market access, and investment barriers. Based on those complexities and the recent progress, a conclusion in 2022 is highly likely. Following the formal negotiations, the agreement needs to be ratified by both sides and ratification of the agreement in the European Parliament is not guaranteed, even for such an agreement with a like-minded close partner country such as Australia. The Chamber is working with the negotiators to achieve a comprehensive agreement that delivers so many benefits that both sides will support and ratify it. Please get in touch if you have questions or feedback about the border restriction matters, the FTA update or our other Governmental Affairs activities.

Online Delegations Building a Virtual Bridge between Australia and Germany By Max Schnarr, German-Australian Chamber

The year 2020 and 2021 were not only very challenging years, but they also generated new forms of international communication. Virtual collaboration has created a bridge between Germany and Australia in the blink of an eye to advance the ongoing relationship between the two countries even in difficult times. AHK Australia converted three business trips in the mining, renewables and maritime industries into virtual formats in 2020. And even

though we are happy to welcome every delegation member back to Australia after the borders have reopened, the virtual implementation has created many contacts and made future cooperation possible. AHK Australia converted two business trips in the Hydrogen space into virtual formats in 2021. And even though we are happy to welcome every delegation member back to Australia after the borders have reopened, the virtual implementation has created many contacts and made future cooperation possible. For this year, we had two more delegations to offer. Due to the high interest, another virtual delegation from Germany to Australia around the topic of hydrogen and a virtual Mining delegation to Germany.

AHK Australien, together with the VDMA Mining, was organising a virtual delegation trip to Germany for Australian mining stakeholders to learn about bilateral developments and possible cooperation between the two countries. The virtual delegation began with an information and presentation event, in which the capabilities of the German supplier industry were addressed, the most important future developments in the Australian mining industry were discussed, and market opportunities were explained. Furthermore, the event offered an excellent opportunity for Australian participants and German market participants to establish initial contacts. The opening day was followed by three Theme days:

Virtual collaboration has created a bridge between Germany and Australia in the blink of an eye during these difficult times.

Theme Day 1 – Zero Emission A rapid reduction of carbon emissions is crucial for future mining operations. Electrification and hydrogen will certainly play a major role, with energy efficiency being a major supporting force. This Theme Day explores challenges and solutions for a more sustainable mining industry.

Delegations & Outlook

Virtual Mining Delegation – 15-18 November:

Theme Day 2 – Mineral Processing Australian mining companies are striving to go deeper into the value , which means processing raw materials in Australia instead of just “dig and ship” minerals. Superior technology is needed to make minerals processed in Australia competitive. German manufacturers have developed world-class expertise in processing technologies and will share current and future developments. Theme Day 3 – Automation Industry 4.0 applications are rapidly finding their way into the mining sector. Chamber Milestones

DR WOLFGANG BABECK Board Member and former Chairman of AHK Australien

“One of my fondest memories undoubtedly was the farewell dinner for Klaus Volker Schuurman, a humorous, generous and kind man, leaving his post as executive director of the German Chamber in 2006. Joined by my wife, we enjoyed a remarkable evening at Dalton House in Sydney, with about 100 guests. Schuurman had been heading the Chamber team since 2001 and brought nothing but a lifetime of experience to Australia, mostly acquired during his long tenures in India, Tunisia and South Africa. When he finished his farewell speech, the room was beaming, and everyone was on their feet to once again applaud the grandseigneur who drove the Chamber with utmost determination. The never-ending applause was followed by a pardoning pity, with shoes too hard to fill for his successor who had to speak afterwards. Most admired was Schuurman’s witty rheinländisch humour and charm. He was never afraid to call a spade a spade, knew everyone and built a team of strong performers and supporters of the Chamber, many of whom are still active 15 years later. Klaus Volker was looking forward to once again living in Germany, which he had left decades before. Together with his dear wife Vinneta, they set up a beautiful home in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Klaus Volker again then left us all far too early, but enriched us with many living memories.”

DR THOMAS FITSCHEN Ambassador of Germany to Australia and AHK-Patron

“Sydney and Melbourne are the powerhouses of the Australian economy and enjoy a strong presence of the German-Australian Chamber. But much of the relevant policies and decisions of interest for German companies are being taken by the government and lawmakers in Canberra. That’s why I am pleased to see what is called “the Canberra Delegation” descend on the capital every year for a couple of days to link up with politicians, Members of Parliament, think tanks, economists, the EU and diplomats. Those meetings and discussions are highly valuable for both sides, as they help to explain and understand issues and positions. Whereas the 2020 delegation had to be cancelled due to Covid, we were lucky enough to have a live visit again in March 2021 – and it was a very personal pleasure for me and my team to host a dinner reception on the day of arrival. The enthusiasm on the part of all participants was proof that “virtual” meetings online – as helpful as they are to organize quick routine exchanges – ultimately cannot replace the real thing. In that sense I hope that both our countries will recover quickly so as to have more “Canberra Delegations” around in coming years.”

DR ANNA PRINZ former Ambassador of Germany to Australia und AHK-Patron

Looking back at my years as patron of the AHK in Australia and German ambassador to Australia I have to stress that the friendship, great cooperation and trust, prevailing in all activities of the chamber was no doubt exceptional. I remember very well the visit of German President FrankWalter Steinmeier to Australia, starting in Perth with the opening of the biggest German Regional Economic Conference in Asia-Pacific organised by the chamber in Sydney. Everybody prominent in Australian politics and economy was present and international participation was outstanding with longterm effects on our relationship. For me personally the second most important development these days was the early support given by AHK for alternative energy ressources such as green hydrogen. A visit to Western Australia to highlight the need for more cooperation with regard to natural ressources to secure supplies for Germany and Europe for future battery production and hydrogen imports. I also admired the courage to develop new fields of activity at that time, such as promoting the cooperation in the growing health industry in Melbourne and to start a dialogue with politicians in Canberra and open doors for members. Stay optimistic and connected!

JASON COLLINS CEO, EABC, a partner organisation of AHK

Government policies as both obstacles and enablers for business are difficult to navigate, even more so when dealing with multiple levels of government, and across different continents and timezones! Business organisations work best when we forge alliances and identify common interest and purpose to inform and assist our members in complex ecosystems. The European Australian Business Council (EABC) has been privileged to forge a strong partnership with the Chamber, working together on issues affecting the bilateral relationship between Germany and Australia, and at the European level on many topics where Brussels is the lead, including negotiations for a ground-breaking free trade agreement. A particular highlight for our work together has included EABC’s annual Business Missions to Europe. Over the past fifteen years we have collaborated on five missions to important German centres for government, business and industry – meeting with public and private sector leaders in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich. These missions have included meetings with Presidents, Ministers, MPs; the IHK and BDI; globally-leading German companies in finance, industry, technology; and important institutions including the Bundesbank, the European Central Bank, the Fraunhofer Institute, and many others. We look forward to our ongoing work together!

LUCY HUGHES TURNBULL AO former President AHK Australien

Hello and happy Anniversary! 44 years is an important milestone, congratulations. I am very proud to be one of your former presidents. I think that in the past ten years, the Chamber has gone from strength to strength. I was proud to be, with Jeff Connolly, a member of the German-Australian Advisory Group in 2015-16. There is now a great deal more collaboration between Australia and Germany as a result of that, and this is a good thing. There is always a great deal we can learn from each other. Especially, in the climate emergency we now face, Germany’s strong commitment and efforts to mitigate climate change and lead the technology solutions to this emergency through significant, targeted investment in new, sometimes disruptive new zero carbon technologies, including green hydrogen. I look forward to seeing a lot more collaboration to solve the pressing problems which will have such a major impact on the world we hand over to our children and grandchildren.

The world certainly has not been sitting idly in the last three months. While North America experienced an unprecedented heatwave, Germany and Asia saw floods in centennial proportions. Meanwhile, the ICC released its most comprehensive climate report ever, and made it clear emissions need to be reduced much sooner than we thought. How has Australia been faring in this time? There has been a lot of positive movement towards more renewable energy. The Western Australian Energy Hub with a capacity of 50GW was announced, just to name the largest. Sun Cable announced a doubling of its capacity simply by increasing

efficiency. Queensland coal terminal operator Dalrymple Bay is worried about stranded assets and exploring a green hydrogen plant as a future energy source instead. Bluescope, meanwhile, is by-passing gas and leapfrogging onto renewables and green hydrogen to make steel instead. NSW, in addition to its Renewable Energy Zones and EV support, is building two hydrogen hubs and pumping another $70 million into green hydrogen. And the Federal government is preparing a certification scheme for clean hydrogen. Just to name a few. This is reflective of the wide-spread view that Australia can become

a renewable energy superpower, ship its sunshine, and add $26 billion a year to its GDP by 2050. Germany, on the other hand, is committed to net zero by 2045 and will need to import vast amounts of renewable energy to keep this promise. It is also home to some of the market leaders in the technologies required to leverage these new energy sources. Both countries have been in a trade relationship of mutual trust and transparency for decades. A match made in heaven? Numerous bilateral energy partnerships have been forged in the last few years, all of which involve the AHK Australien in an essential role.

The German Chamber of Commerce is playing its part by leveraging its deep and active government contacts to the benefit of the renewable energy industry. Its Energy Cluster brings together commerce and politics, connects businesses large and small, and creates exchange and networking opportunities. Topics range from energy efficiency to batteries, solar, wind, and hydrogen. Companies looking to participate in the bilateral energy sector and getting themselves on the radar have been joining the Cluster already, but there are more to come. Food & Beverage

The Food & Beverage Cluster By Mathias Suter Cluster Manager, Food & Beverage

Australian State and Territory governments and both the German and Australian Federal governments have all declared the Food & Beverage industry a priority industry to guarantee local supply and drive international trade.

48

ACCELERATE

The Food & Beverage industry is Australia’s largest manufacturing industry, making up approximately one-third of all manufacturing jobs, with a large portion of those in regional and rural communities. The sector already features strong exports and growing markets, especially within the Southeast Asian region, promising further, sustained growth into the future. Germany has long been a substantial exporter of Food & Beverage products, machinery, and technological solutions used in production. Furthermore, Germany is the European leader in the field. That leading position, paired with the developments surrounding the EU-

Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA), promises a bright future for the German-Australian bilateral relationships within this sector. In an effort to assist German and Australian businesses in harnessing this outlook’s potential, AHK Australien is pleased to announce the launch of its Food & Beverage Cluster. This cluster is part of our four areas of focus (Energy, Health, Mining & Resources and Food & Beverage). It aims to become a centre of competence for all industry participants, from the production of produce, over machinery and plant manufacturers through to logistics and specialised service providers.

Food & Beverage

Under the lead of Cluster Manager Mathias Suter, the Food & Beverage Cluster will provide industry-specific consulting services and exclusive networking and exposure opportunities at AHK events. In addition, cluster members get the chance to participate in the topic-specific committee to help drive the cluster’s direction actively. Mining & Resources

Australia’s Mining Industry – Dead end or bright future? By Juergen Wallstabe Cluster Manager, Mining & Resources

Juergen Wallstabe, Cluster Manager Mining & Resources

52

ACCELERATE

In recent history, mining has allowed access to a “new” range of metals that helped technologies like computers or smartphones to be more powerful each year while shrinking to sizes unimaginable only a couple of decades ago. At the same time, mining often has a negative impact on landscapes, ecosystems, communities and – as recent events in Australia have demonstrated – even historical sites. Furthermore, the steady advance of mining technologies made it possible to extract billions of tons of fossil fuels from the ground, leading to one of the greatest challenges humanity has ever faced – climate change. So here we are at a crossroads – which role should mining play in the future?

Status quo – mining is crucial for Australia In 2021, mining is still crucial to keeping the global economy going. Visual Capitalist published a great article illustrating the world’s mine production – have a look here, it is mind-boggling (note that different colours represent different orders of magnitude – from 1 metric ton to 1 million metric tons!). Looking at Australia, the picture becomes clearer when you look at dollar values instead of masses. In 2019/20, Australia exported a whopping $291 billion worth of resources, with iron ore being the most important commodity ($103 bn), followed by coal ($55 bn, thermal and metallurgical), LNG ($48 bn), gold ($24 bn) and other resources like Copper, Aluminium, Nickel and a wide range of critical minerals. The positive impact of mining on the Australian economy is obvious – the resources industry and associated

Mining & Resources

Mining for resources has played a decisive role in the development of humanity as we know it. Many major technological breakthroughs were only possible because new materials became available along with knowledge and technologies to mine those materials – it is for good reason that epochs of human development are named after the raw materials stone, bronze and iron.

suppliers and service providers (METS – Mining Equipment, Technology and Services) contribute around 15% to Australia’s GDP and support over 1.1 million jobs which are almost 10% of all full-time employment.1 A success story destined to continue, one would think. But there are some tough challenges to overcome in the coming years and decades.

Everchanging resources demand The worldwide economic situation, as well as technological developments, continuously change the demand for resources and its composition: - While coal is currently one of Australia’s major export commodities, it won’t be in 30 years’ time - While China is still enormously hungry for iron ore to feed a strong domestic construction sector, there are signs that the growth rates we’ve seen in the past are not going to repeat - While Lithium’s largest application was in glass and ceramics production ten years ago, Li-Ion batteries are becoming ever more important for our future planet.

Impact on land and people Mines cover less than 0.02% of the Australian total land area (for comparison: that’s roughly the size of a grain of rice on a dinner plate); nevertheless, it is indisputable that most mining operations do have an 1 Source: METS Sector Australia – Mining

impact on the local environment and local communities. While most mining companies already have excellent social and environmental practices in place, the definition of “excellent” will continuously change. To name just two examples: - Storing tailings in massive, often square kilometre sized dams was and is an acceptable standard procedure. That might change in the future as more and more voices call for a “no tailings dam future” - After the (legal but questionable) destruction of Jukaan Gorge by Rio Tinto in May 2020, miners will be extra careful when dealing with sites of historical or cultural significance.

Path to Zero Emission Generally, mining operations require a lot of energy which in turn cause carbon emissions. For reference, an average of 0.8 tons of CO2 was emitted by mines worldwide per ounce of gold produced (that’s your standard Australian Kangaroo gold coin). That’s equivalent to the carbon emissions of a standard economy Diesel car driving 2,500 km from Sydney to Cairns. Hence, mining companies are under enormous pressure to reduce their operational carbon emissions. However, as many Australian mines are located in the middle of nowhere, simply connecting the mine to the electricity grid and signing up for a renewables plan isn’t an option. Similarly, finding safe and reliable alternatives to Diesel engines currently powering an army of mining trucks isn’t straightforward either.

Europe is the world’s fasted growing lithium chemicals market; the EU has pledged to cut emissions by 55% by 2030 with a goal of net zero by 2050. Using traditional “hard-rock mining” methods to produce the lithium needed to electrify Europe’s passenger vehicles could create 231 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Our process aims to eliminate these emissions with a non-mining solution. In doing so, we aim to fix the EU’s lithium problems for the electric vehicle market. We have already established important partnerships including working with Circulor to use their full traceability and dynamic CO2 measurement solution and engaging Minviro to conduct a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA), the results of which estimated that negative 2.9 tonnes of CO2 would be produced for every tonne of lithium hydroxide monohydrate produced.

Here’s how it works – Lithium rich geothermal brine is pumped to the surface at approximately 165 degrees Celsius, the heat from the brine is used to produce renewable geothermal heat and power which powers the lithium extraction process with excess electricity sold into the grid. At surface, the brine goes through a unique Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) process to capture the lithium product. The brine is then reinjected back into the geothermal reservoir. Finally, Vulcan processes the extracted lithium product locally to a battery-grade chemical, ready for use in electric vehicle batteries. Ultimately, the Vulcan’s process uses only half as much energy as it produces, creating the world’s first premium lithium product with net zero emissions and no use of fossil fuels. Backed by our world-leading expert team and our strategic EU location, Vulcan’s Zero Carbon Lithium™ Project is on track to decarbonise the E-mobility transition.

EcoGraf, based in Perth, Western Australia, is developing a vertically integrated battery anode business to support the global transition to clean energy and e-mobility. At its state-of-the-art processing facility under development in Perth’s south, it plans to manufacture spherical graphite products using its internationally recognised proprietary HFfree purification process, with pre-construction of the facility now underway. With more than US$30 million invested in the project to date, the Australian Government has provided it with “Major Project Status” which recognises its significance to the Australian economy and qualifies it for extra support and coordinated approvals. To this end, EcoGraf has received a non-binding letter of support from the government’s export credit agency, Export Finance Australia, to secure a US$35 million loan facility for the planned expansion of its WA operations. While any final commitments from Export Finance Australia are subject to satisfaction of several conditions, EcoGraf’s Managing Director Andrew Spinks described the letter of intent as an important milestone for the project

and signifies that the Company’s plans actively support Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategy for the transition to clean energy. “The new EcoGraf battery anode material facility will be the first of its type globally, providing battery and electric vehicle manufacturers with sustainably produced, high performance battery anode material for lithium-ion batteries,” he said. With EcoGraf’s plans in Australia progressing well, the Company is already looking abroad for international expansion opportunities which will enable it to better target key markets in Europe and North America. It has signed a land reservation agreement for an industrial site in Skellefteå, Sweden, as a potential location for its European operations, following investigation of potential sites in Germany and Sweden. The 65,000m2 site is in one of Skellefteå’s main industrial areas in a region that boasts clean, renewable energy and the lowest industrial power costs in Europe, as well as educated and skilled labour force and a nearby port to enable access to key Europe battery and industrial markets. Mr Spinks said EcoGraf was completing a detailed assessment of potential development at Skellefteå, in a site which would accommodate increased production, further downstream value adding and battery anode recycling. He said the Company was also assessing other sites in Germany as part of its plans to get a foothold in Europe. “The environmental credentials of the unique EcoGraf™ purification

Pure Battery Technologies By Bjorn Zikarsky, CEO, Pure Battery Technologies

PBT has successfully developed, validated and commercialized two “green”, low-cost processes for producing critical battery materials. PBT’s Selective Acid Leaching (SAL) and Combined Leach (CL) processes, discovered by the University of Queensland and developed by PBT, produce highquality, more affordable nickel and cobalt battery materials with a lower environmental footprint. PBT’s primary business is pCAM (precursor Cathode Active Material) produced using feedstock from either primary intermediate

64

ACCELERATE

products (Mixed Hydroxide Precipitates from laterite ore or sulphide ore concentrates) or secondary recycled materials (black mass).

Between the mining process and creating a battery there is a number of value steps required. PBT’s technology simplifies the steps at a lower cost and lower emissions and minimal waste compared to their peers. The processes can convert both common mixed intermediate products as well as recycled materials (i.e., black mass) directly into pCAM without metal separation. PBT is in the unique position to become a supplier to and an integral part of the battery electric vehicle value chain due to its unique value prepositions including: - enabling a >40% cost saving on pCAM, equivalent to $3.50 / kWh - cutting emissions by >70% for pCAM production, equivalent to 6-12 kg CO2 / kWh - 100% material recycling

Are we sure it works? In September 2020, PBT purchased K&E Refinery in Hagen, Germany. PBT’s technology has been retrofitted in the K&E Refinery demonstrating and validating the process for higher value-added products at commercial scale and having delivered the desired specifications of pCAM material of key target customers at scale.

What is next? PBT plans to build more plants in strategic areas to deliver the minerals

needed for the worlds renewable energy needs from sustainably and ethically sourced metals. Part of this plan is to build plants close to raw and secondary feedstock sources. Up until recently, Australia has been considered ‘the worlds quarry’ exporting ore all over the world to be value-added in jurisdictions far from the raw mineral source. PBT’s unique process offers the significant environmental improvements in the processing of battery materials required to operate in highly regulated countries like Australia and Germany.

in 1950, the first long-play tapes in 1953 and the first chrome tapes in 1971. BASF’s innovation and ability to identify the right partner paid off when the emerging music industry chose BASF technology to record master tapes. Later, with the advent of the personal cassette, once again BASF was well placed to be the ‘go to’ brand for your music collection. When the video market then exploded, the BASF magnetic tape was the industry leader. As the music and video industry developed it was clear that magnetic tape technology had a finite life, so BASF invested and partnered to produce ultraviolet sensitive dyes suitable for the emerging CD and DVD markets. As this market matured, BASF then redirected their research and development to find novel chemical solutions in the manufacturing of hard memory devices like USBs. As a result of this continuous innovation, BASF became a household name practically the world over, and the reason a chemical company is remembered for these humble tapes! So, what do BASF tapes have to do with the company’s latest digital mining offering? The ability to innovate, think ahead of the curve and push the boundaries of what is possible today, for tomorrow. In 2018, BASF’s mining team was ready to embrace the full potential of Industry 4.0, and found the right partner in IntelliSense.io. Together, they developed cutting edge technology combining BASF chemical and mining process knowledge with IntelliSense’s industry-leading advanced data analytic solutions.

The result is the ‘BASF Intelligent Mine’, powered by IntelliSense.io. There are two parts to the technology: the first is a real-time, decisionmaking platform (brains. app) which is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that can be configured for individual sites, typically within three months. The second is a portfolio of optimisation applications which predict and simulate future performance, generating process-specific recommendations for insights and optimisation. As multiple applications link together, customers can generate efficiency gains throughout the entire mine-to-market value chain. The BASF Intelligent Mine approach is different to others in this field. We offer ‘ready to go’ digital solutions that are ready to be deployed now. Over six years have been invested in building physics-based and machine learning assets and models for mining-specific processes for different commodities, spanning base and precious metals, coal, iron ore, mineral sands and rare earths.

BASF serves key industries in the agriculture, coatings, manufacturing and mining sectors, and posted sales of about €348 million in Australia and New Zealand in 2020. As of the end of 2020, the company had 394 employees and operated 6 production sites across agricultural solutions, performance products and functional materials and solutions. BASF has been active in Australia for more than 90 years, and for about 60 years in New Zealand. Further information is available on the internet at www. basf.com/au.

When it comes to acquiring or selling an asset in mining, data management may not be the first consideration. Here is why it should be of paramount importance. The rapid onset and spread of COVID-19 initially slowed down Merger & Acquisition (M&A) activity across numerous sectors. In 2020, a total of 61 M&A deals were carried out for projects and companies with primary business in metal and resources in 2020, with a total deal value of $16.70 USD billion. Volumes have since picked up from these lows with historical evidence suggesting that M&A markets quickly recover once uncertainty subsides. (Source: S&P Global Market Intelligence) A new increase in M&A transaction is fuelled partially by companies’ relentless search to build robust portfolios, but also by the drive to accelerate the energy transition. (Source: Deloitte) Proper data management is an area affected by all M&A activities which has to be prioritised. The aim must be to focus on management of data to enable the required reporting of financial and business information from the transformed entities. Organisations often need guidance as to the extent that data needs to be merged or split. The following aspects should be considered in a merger or carve-out of data:

72

ACCELERATE

1) System Consolidation The requirement of migrating data from one or multiple source system(s) into one or multiple target system(s) and therefore consolidating data into one or multiple target system(s).

2) Company Code/Plant Merge The requirement of merging existing legal entities into one target legal entity. In this case there is a merge of company codes, financial documents will be renumbered (offset or pattern) as they can be dependent on the company code.

3) Change Organisational Structure The organisational structure needs to be set up. Typical organisational units inside backbone systems include the operating concern, management reporting structures, company code, plant, purchase, and sales organisation. For these organisational units, different scenarios are possible – starting from a rename of the same, deletion, merge or split.

4) Carve Out This pattern ‘data carve-out’ describes the requirement of migrating selective data from a source system into a target system and may also include the deletion of the transferred data from the source system. The derivation of the relevant data scope will be defined according to organisational units (e.g. company code, plant, etc.).

In a chart of account harmonisation, accounts can be renamed and/or merged if historical data need to be converted. In case of a chart of account harmonisation without historical data, a split of the accounts can be included.

6) Downtime Reduction Transformation downtime minimisation can reduce the technical business interruption (system downtime). Three different near-zero downtime (NZDT) scenarios that can be individually combined are: 1) Warm-Cold-Data-Migration (Pre-/Post Migration) 2) Data Synchronisation of Up-Time-Processes (DeltaMigration/DB-Trigger) 3) ORACLE Database Optimisation/ Native-Data-Migration

“Significant mining assets acquisitions and mergers generate significant publicity in the media. The success of these transactions however is the seamless integration of assets and data”

Natuvion

5) Technical Chart of Accounts

7) Data Anonymisation The anonymisation/pseudonymisation should not negatively influence the business processes. Anonymisation of personal data means replacing key fields (business partner numbers, customer numbers, personnel numbers) and technical data (documents, metering points, etc.) with synthetic data, which could be contrary to the purpose of the respective systems for analysing error situations and ensuring productive processes.

8) Process Mining

About us

Process Mining works by extracting knowledge from event logs readily available in today’s information systems. This data is then visualised as a graphical interpretation of the business processes. The interpretation also outlines the variations to the end-to-end business process. It is these variations that may be caused by manual interventions of the business process, waiting on data and paper evidence etc. Process mining will then assist in identifying how these variations can be overcome either through removing manual processes and/or in some cases adopting Robotic Process Automation outlined below.

Natuvion is a digital moving company. Our team does not transport desks, filing cabinets or chairs. Natuvion moves businesscritical data and processes from one technology platform to another. We are specialists in all the data considerations outlined above. We stand ready to advise these matters to our Mining colleagues.

9) Automation Mining organisations have been at the forefront of automation in industry with for instance driverless vehicles. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has now also been commoditised to automate business processes. The robots known as ‘Bots’ can imitate human interactions within applications and processes. For example, RPA can significantly reduce the time spent on compliance tasks and also revolutionise the time to quote and invoice processes through automation of workflow and approvals to start.

Decarbonisation and Digitalisation – Keeping Australian Mining best of class! By: Rafael Koenig, Managing Director of Weidmueller Australia

The mining sector is in the middle of a massive transformation process. In 2020 Lars Barnewold and Bernd G. Lottermoser from RWTH Aachen University pointed out in the International Journal of Mining Science and Technology that the implementation of digital innovations, and various terms have proliferated in the media, the internet and at conferences, describing these technological

advances and associated imminent changes. Decarbonisation and climate change mitigation in mining are further objectives that gain more and more relevance. In this context, Rafael goes into depth on how our industry has a big role to play in protecting our climate and our economic livelihood through the big trends like “decarbonisation”, “fourth industrial revolution”, “smart mining”, or “mining 4.0”.1

1. Decarbonisation The mining industry contributes 2 to 3 percent of global CO2 emissions and has a large role to play in emissions reduction. Within the industry, much of the focus to date has been on portfolio shifts (that is, divestment of coal assets); however, the industry is facing increasing pressure from regulators, investors, and customers to decarbonise operations2 . The active mitigation of climate change risks is thankfully not just in the hand of our politicians. The reluctant commitment of our political leaders to achieve netzero and the threat of being left behind by the rest of the world are certainly less than ideal. We see an increasing number of initiatives driven by large resources, energy and manufacturing companies to accelerate their efforts

in decarbonising their processes and switch to clean and renewable resources for their energy needs. I see our role within our industry as offering vital solutions in renewable energy (Wind, PV, Battery Storage and Green Hydrogen). In addition, using technology to reduce the energy demand for our manufacturing industry will optimise this industry’s cost structure while reducing the carbon footprint. Decarbonisation also means replacing, or at least dramatically reducing, the need for fossil fuels for areas like transport and the use of gas and coal in heat generation in industrial processes. While hardly anyone can solve all these challenges alone, we as an industry can contribute substantially.

Weidmueller

In addition, the mining industry is at a tipping point where sustainability and decarbonisation are top items on CEOs’ agendas2 . To achieve a 1.5°C climatechange target by 2050, the mining industry will need to reduce direct CO2 emissions to zero. Encouragingly, analysis shows that solutions to decarbonise the majority of emissions will become economic within this decade, addressing both Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. So, what are the big trends and issues that we see and how can our industry drive successful outcomes?

2. Digitalisation The unmined potential for automation of equipment and decisions is the next frontier in productivity improvements in the mining industry. While for most mid-tier players, dreams of the fully digitally-enabled autonomous mine remain some years away, relatively simpler decision automation initiatives are within reach3 . Digitalisation, IIoT and Industry 4.0 have for some time now been promoted as technologies that will shape the future of our industries. We now must move from buzz words to real-world use. If we can use digitalisation to improve productivity, we increase productivity and remove waste. If we

use condition monitoring, machine learning and analytics smartly, we can reduce maintenance costs and increase the efficiency, safety and reliability of most processes. In addition, if we use the data we collect sensibly, we are able to optimise energy usage and contribute even more to reducing our reliance on traditional energy sources and of course the associated costs. While we cannot move away immediately from all uses of fossil fuels, we have in Australia only scratched the surface in making their use efficient. Thankfully it emerges that our mining industry in particular is getting ready to adopt smart technologies to combine sustainability and productivity. In addition, future investments in Oil and Gas, LNG and Coal for example need to drive efficiency and go hand in hand with the eventual transition towards renewable and clean energy sources. Digitalisation is a key enabler in this field and our industry has a responsibility to optimise processes and engineering to drive sustainable outcomes.

ACCELERATE

In summary Automation, Instrumentation and Process control are shaped by organisations with international footprints. As an industry, we have a body of knowledge, experience and capabilities that cannot be matched by individual organisations. Our industry has proven in the past that it can work together to drive common outcomes but also compete where needed. If there is one thing that I learned from the challenges we have had during the COVID pandemic, it is the realisation that there is no time to wait. Our industry has a vital role in the big picture that is protecting our climate and our economic livelihood. The question is not, “What are we entitled to?“ but, “What can we do now to start change?“. We believe in a positive mindset at Weidmueller and will translate this into our commitment. We strive to provide our customers with locally designed solutions for renewable energy projects, the ambition and efforts to contribute to the Hydrogen economy while also developing smart solutions for manufacturing, mining and traditional industries. At the same time let’s not forget that we also have an obligation to manage demand and availability of our more traditional products together with our channel partners. Let’s connect.

After years of dawdling on minor roads and byways, the electric vehicle industry in Germany has finally shifted gear and moved into the fast lane. The race for dominance in the e-mobility sector is officially on – 2020 really will be the year of the electric car in Germany. The numbers speak for themselves. In Europe this year, 176 new models of electric vehicles (EVs) will come onto the market. Next year there will be 214. And by 2023, German manufacturers alone will be selling 150 types of e-vehicles, says Henning Kagermann, chairman of The National Platform Future of Mobility (NPM), a group of advisors to the German Government. “In 2019,” adds automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt, “Europe’s largest passenger car market, Germany, also became Europe’s largest purely electric passenger car market in terms of annual registration volumes.” Read full article here.

Experts Predict Boom for Providers in German EV Battery Production By Germany Trade & Invest

With a host new production facilities underway in the country, Germany is poised to become Europe’s electric vehicle (EV) battery capital.

As quoted by business newspaper Handelsblatt, the prestigious Fraunhofer Institute predicts a German production capacity of 500 to 600 gigawatt hours by 2030. That would be almost a third of production worldwide, according to figures from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. According to estimates, EUR 60 billion could be spent on the production facilities throughout Europe, roughly half in Germany, and 20 billion Euros or more could be generated in annual revenues by 2030. And that figure could be doubled by 2040, thinks global engineering consultants Altran. What sorts of businesses are likely to benefit from the multiplication effect?

A Powerful Green Innovation By Germany Trade & Invest

Across the country, there are hosts of start-ups developing cutting-edge solutions in the energy sector. Instagrid, a company from Ludwigsburg in southwest Germany which makes clean portable power solutions, is one example of German creativity in the area.

While working for Bosch in the electronics and battery division, Andreas Sedlmayr and Sebastian Berning noticed that whenever they were deployed outside, electricity was a major headache. It gave them an idea. Construction sites rely on diesel generators to provide power, but they are big environmental offenders. “They emit one hundred times more toxins than a car,” says Berning. It was a lightbulb moment which resulted in the birth of instagrid. The start-up, which also has an office in Helsinki, makes 15kg industrial batteries that cause zero local emissions and can last an entire day, whether they’re powering a jackhammer or a music festival’s PA system.

of a strategy to safeguard some hardearned money in Australia’s real-estate market. If you look at the statistics, Australia is very popular to Malaysians. According to a 2016 census from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, approximately 300,000 Malaysian tourists visit Australia every year and on average around 2,0003,000 Malaysian students are enrolled in Australia’s education institutions. In the period of 2019-2020, Malaysians ranked 6th highest in the visitors’ nationalities entering Australia, as reported by the Australian government’s Department of Home Affairs. That makes Australia one of the most popular travel and migration destinations for Malaysians. Why that? As usual, the reasons are rather simple: Australia is the closest Englishspeaking “western-style” country and Western Australia is even in the same time zone with Kuala Lumpur. And it also offers something that Malaysians who are born in a country of eternal tropical summer have an insatiable craving for: the variety of four seasons in a subtropical climate. And to top it all, Australia for many years has been offering job opportunities with a high minimum wage for qualified people. Malaysians love to swarm to KLIA, one of the busiest airports in the region, and simply hop on a flight for as short as 5 hours and 30 minutes arriving in Perth.
