from Richard As shared in our February Tidings, we are continuing through Easter a sermon series titled “On The Road With Jesus.” Each sermon looks in on a key scene in the life of Jesus and the implications for our contemporary faith walk with him. Let me mention some special guests with us on Sunday, March 22. Since 2007, GUMC has supported the community outreach ministries of Maua Methodist Hospital in Kenya. On that Sunday, missionaries Jim Monroe and his wife Sue Owen of Maua will preach in all three worship services. Rev. Jim is the CEO of Maua Methodist Hospital and Rev. Sue is the Director of Volunteers. We are eager for you to meet them and for them to share their witness. As we continue through the Lenten season toward Easter on April 5, I hope you are spending adequate time in personal spiritual reflection so that you are growing in your centeredness on Jesus and in commitment to his call upon your life.

WOW! The Women Of Worth Retreat On February 6, 64 women ages 22 to 84 met on a picturesque winter day at Pinecrest Conference Center in LaGrange, TN, for an amazing weekend of studying, playing, sharing, laughing, singing, and praying. One of the best things about our retreat was getting to know the lovely and interesting women that we have possibly seen at church but have never met, and to engage them in meaningful conversation! This year we had 8 mother/ daughter (daughter-in-law) couples join us. What a terrific way to spend quality time together! Yolanda Toney, our speaker for the event, led sessions on “Courageous Women, Praying Women, and Women of Hope.” We met in a beautiful wooded conference room surrounded by windows, making us feel like we were in a giant tree house. We learned about Deborah who led the Israelite troops into battle. We discussed the challenges that Esther confronted to save her people from death. We studied Mary Magdalene, the foremost witness to Jesus’ death and the empty tomb, and in receiving the news of appearance of the risen Christ. We learned that a courageous and hopeful woman is a praying woman, and we discussed and practiced various ways to pray.
Our planning team had fun activities and games to keep us moving and to help us to meet each other. We had free time for hiking, reading, talking or taking a nap. We gathered for delicious meals around a huge stone fireplace in the dining room. On Friday evening, after the planned activities had ceased, some of us gathered around the fireplace or in our cabins for extended discussion and laughter with our old and new friends. Our closing worship service on Saturday afternoon was held in the beautiful Chapel on the grounds of Pinecrest. The Chapel is magnificent in its simplicity. Instead of stained glass windows, we connected to God through nature by looking through floor-to-ceiling windows onto the wonder of creation. We closed our service by singing Here I Am Lord and Sweet, Sweet Spirit. The retreat was a special “moment in time” for us all, giving us a feeling of family, deepening our connectedness with each other, with God, and with GUMC. As we departed, the last line of “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” encapsulated the feeling we all felt as we hugged each other and said good-bye: “… without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave this place.” 5
GUMC Life Prayer and Spiritual Life The youth in our congregation wrote an outstanding devotional book this year. Below is one of the devotions from that book.

“But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference He has made for you – from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.” - 1 Peter 2:9-10 Every day God calls all of us to do His will. Social media and school always make this a major struggle for me. If we don’t act like Christly people all of the time, do others see us as hypocrites? I often try to contain God to certain areas and aspects of my life. I failed to see that if you are only doing Christ’s work half the time or only when you want to, you aren’t fulfilling what He wants for us. God uses us as messengers to share His unfailing love to others. If people look to us to understand and follow Christ, how does it look when we only live through Him when it is convenient to us? Basically, I’m saying to act upon your faith. We’ve been given the greatest gift of all time, and we should do our best to use it! God, I pray that you teach us to prioritize your will in our lives. I ask that you use us to show others your unfathomable love. I pray that you show each of us your calling for us to do your work.

April Brown Bag Lunch Learn About the Sultana Tragedy at the April Brown Bag Lunch “Lee Surrenders!” “President Murdered!” “Booth Killed!” screamed the headlines of American newspapers in April 1865, leaving little room for mention of a maritime disaster that to this day stands as America’s worst. On April 27, 1865, the Sultana, a wooden-hulled steamboat carrying six times the legal capacity, exploded on the Mississippi River, killing more than 1,800 men, making this event the Civil War’s last great human tragedy. Author Jerry Potter will tell us this littleknown story at the April Brown Bag Lunch Series, an adventure in learning sponsored by the Older Adult Council. Spotlight on Seniors Hazel Goodale Hazel was born and raised on a small tobacco farm in Galivants Ferry, SC, the middle child of five children. The year she was born, her father set aside the earnings from one acre of his tobacco crop towards her future college education – as he did with each child born. He also planted some land in timber when each child was born so it would be ready to harvest when each child turned 18, also to be used for their education. Hazel attended Aynor High School where she was an All-State basketball player, and graduated as valedictorian. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Columbia College in Columbia, SC. While there, she met and married Gene Goodale who was a Naval Aviator and then an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA. Later, she received her master’s degree in education from The University of Memphis. Hazel’s career was in education, as a teacher, a supervisor, and finally the founding Principal of Farmington Elementary School in Germantown. She had a passion for people and her career and earned numerous awards. Hazel was the Tennessee Distinguished Principal of the Year in 1986, the first in Shelby County to be honored as such by the U.S. Department of Education. Two years later, she was equally proud when Farmington Elementary was awarded the 198788 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In 1992, her alma mater, Columbia College, awarded her the Wil Lou Gray Educator Award. A pioneer in the field of Special Education, Hazel began the first special needs program in Germantown. The program remained in place until federal regulations required children to be schooled in their “home school” and not bused to a specific location. As one of her highest achievements, Hazel received the National Principal Award which she traveled to the White House to receive. She retired after 31 years with the Shelby County schools. 10
Hazel was also active in the community and was the Germantown Lion’s Club Citizen of the Year in 1990. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators. As a member of GUMC, she served as chair of the Pre-school Council, was a member of the Fellowship Forum Sunday school class, and a member of the Mertice Foster Circle. She also taught Sunday school at the elementary level, joking that “she was the teacher and Gene was the bouncer.” She also loves to play bridge and is an avid reader and worker of jigsaw puzzles. Hazel and her husband Gene enjoyed time with family and traveled until his death in 2012. Gene was the planner of many national and overseas trips which frequently included some combination of their three children, two spouses, and five grandchildren. She is well loved by her family and an inspiration to them. Although in declining health, Hazel continues to love life and is strong in her faith. Hazel’s life is summed up in her own frequently stated words:
“Life is good, God is good.”

Youth Ministry New Journeys:
Jason Baker After 4 years of service, Jason Baker, Director of Youth Ministries, is moving on. The following is a message from Jason. As you know, sometimes our career journey and personal journey lines up in a way that suggests God might be stirring something in us to move us in a different direction. After Claire and I married in November 2014, I began to sense God working and moving in our new life together, mostly around our careers. Claire was offered a full-time job at Hope Church in Cordova (her home church), and I was offered a position at Memphis-based company Agape North, which provides apparel for various organizations and donates uniforms to low income Memphis students for every piece of apparel printed. My role will involve managing our church, non-profit, and charter school accounts/ partners. I’m very excited about the opportunity to empower others to get involved in our city, especially through education. But with this transition comes the need to transition out of my role as Youth Director at Germantown United Methodist Church. With a desire for Claire and I to worship together, and her recent commitment to Hope Church, the time is right for me to transition out. I feel a bit like John Calapari when he said, “Going to Kentucky is the easy part, leaving Memphis is the hard part.” I love this place, I love our youth and families, I love the vision and momentum of our youth program, I love the church staff like a second family of my own, and I love the daily opportunity to point people towards Jesus. I have grown more in the last 4.5 years than I would have ever imagined, thanks to our awesome youth and a supportive and driven staff. Specifically, I have really thrived under Richard’s leadership, and
12
have felt more than resourced and encouraged to run after God’s dream for our Youth Ministry. We’ve shattered attendance records, saw lives transformed for God’s glory and honor, and witnessed our youth staff grow in loving what we do together. That is not easy to leave, but I know God and our program is bigger than one person, and he will continue to be faithful to the people who invest in our youth on a daily and weekly basis. This has easily been the best job I’ve ever had, and I’m beyond grateful for the skills I have learned to take this next step in my career. In fact, I wouldn’t have known about Agape North, and its mission and purpose in our city, had I not come to work at Germantown United Methodist Church. It’s been an incredible ride, and I attribute some of who I am to this place. Thank you. My last day is April 12, and I’m excited to announce that Sue Hyland will immediately be promoted to Youth Director beginning April 13. Kelsea Johns (current High School Girls Intern) will serve as the Interim Associate Youth Director, and Sam Norman and Tony Pakis (current college students from GUMC) will serve as summer interns to balance gender in leadership. GUMC will launch a search for a permanent Associate Youth Director, please do be in prayer for that process. Again, thank you for who you are and all your support over the years! Your brother on the journey, Jason Baker

CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE One hundred and seventy-five years ago, our ancestors established a new church here in Germantown. This year we will celebrate these 175 years of growth and the change within these walls and within our own spirits. All members of Germantown United Methodist are invited to send ideas and suggestions for celebratory events to Renee Pearl (758-6519 or rpearl@germantownumc.org) as soon as possible. We need photos, anecdotes, and testimonials. In other words, we want YOU tell us how you think the celebration should be done and how YOU can help. This is really going to be a big, months-long celebration. Everyone should be, and will want to be, a part of it.
