I think this author is absolutely right. One could add that these ancient hymns and poetic pieces speak to us so keenly because they are so honest; so spiritually transparent; so true to our own life and faith journeys. The truth is, few of you really need an introduction to the role the Psalms have played for centuries in the lives of God’s people. However, spending some dedicated time with them can deepen our appreciation for them while strengthening our personal spiritual journeys. Therefore, in the months of July and August we will be looking at particular Psalms and the spiritual lessons we glean therein. It will be a blessing for us preachers to prayerfully develop these sermons and share them with you.
Church offices will be closed on Friday, July 3.

Go The Extra Mile Monday Night Visitation Our Monday Night Visitation Teams welcome firsttime visitors to Germantown United Methodist Church by taking information packets and chocolate chip cookies to their homes! In these brief visits, teams learn more about our guests, and what brought them to our church. Visitors are encouraged to visit again to engage in the worship experience, and explore opportunities for spiritual growth, mission opportunities, and fellowship. Teams volunteer on the same Monday each month, or serve as alternates. Most visits occur in the late afternoon or early evening. When visits are not possible, phone visits may occur. Team members listen intently and respect visitees. Dedication, compassion and enthusiasm describe this ministry’s volunteers, evidenced by one

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, without doubting, for the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. (James 1:5-6) Jesus has made it clear to us that we should pray always. Genuine heartfelt prayer produces powerful changes in us and in our world. In prayer, we open ourselves to a never-ending source of divine wisdom and infinite love.

Adult Education
Focus On Adult Sunday School: Emmanuel If you are looking to join an established Sunday School class that is in a season of refreshment and rejuvenation, Emmanuel is it! The Emmanuel class is a relaxed, supportive group of mostly couples in their 30s and 40s who enjoy Bible-based teaching and discussion about the relevant topics in our lives and the world. We meet at 11:00 a.m. in Room 136, which is located directly behind the kitchen adjacent to the Fellowship Hall. Our time together usually includes catching up over coffee and snacks, announcements about what is going on in the life of the church as well as our own class missions, followed by a member-taught lesson that is often part of a larger series. The Emmanuel class also enjoys getting together for both family and adult social gatherings outside of church. Our current teaching series is based on the book Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids. A few constant and upcoming missions that are near and dear to the Emmanuel class include Room in the Inn, Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary School, Door of Hope Writers’

Adult Education Disciple Bible Study Search Scripture... Find Community For more than 20 years, DISCIPLE Bible Study has remained the #1 choice for some of the most vibrant congregations in the world—including ours—transforming the lives of more than two million participants worldwide! DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders. DISCIPLE Bible Study provides participants with a working knowledge of the Bible in a small group that becomes an experience in Christian community. The discussion format creates an opportunity for people from varied perspectives to wrestle with their questions and to share the way the Bible speaks to them. DISCIPLE helps you put it all together and become familiar with the entire Bible. You’ll develop a “habit or spiritual discipline” of frequent Bible reading and be able to feel more comfortable in your level of biblical understanding and follow other studies or sermons more clearly.

Spotlight on Seniors Ethyl and Richard White Ethyl White was born and raised in Terra Haute, Indiana and knew at a young age that she wanted to be a teacher. She attended Indiana State University, and there met her husband, Richard. Richard grew up in East Chicago, Indiana, and married Ethyl the same day they graduated from college. Ethyl’s comment about this – “We were in a hurry!” They moved to Lawrence, Kansas where Richard taught first year medical students while pursuing a doctorate in physiology and Ethyl taught school. Their first son, Paul, was born during that time. From there they moved to Galesburg, Illinois where Dr. White did neuropharmacological research and their second son, Thurman, was born. They came to Memphis in 1956 when Dr. White joined the College of Medicine primarily to teach neuropharmacology. He did so for 44 years. He was awarded an NIH Career Development Award in 1959 that supported his research for a decade. His research took him to England for a year, and later to nine different countries. Much of his research dealt with drugs that affected cerebral circulation and, beginning in 1977, Richard served for six years on the Editorial Board of the journal, Circulation Research. In 1998, his scientific biography appeared in The Rise of Psychopharmacology. Throughout his career, Dr. White received six teaching awards, authored 174 research reports, and wrote twenty book chapters. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2000 and then published Bibles, Science and Sanity, an account of the conflict between science and religion, Wrestlers in History, a history of the sport, and essays on George Washington, John Grimek, and John Witherspoon. He was a member of the Memphis Sherlock Holmes Society and the Memphis Scottish Society.

Ethyl taught science at Germantown High School for many years, teaching biology to some of the students her husband would later teach in medical school. Her first classroom had a tin roof and no air conditioning so she brought fans from home that helped a bit on the hottest days. Some of her students served as volunteer firemen and were often called from class to fight fires. She earned her Master’s degree in 1971 from then Memphis State University. She received 22 teaching awards during her career, including the 1984 National Science Teachers Association Award and later the Tennessean Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from Governor Lamar Alexander. She too was a member of the Memphis Sherlock Holmes Society and the Memphis Scottish Society as well as the Chickasaw Bluff Chapter of the Daughers of the American Revolution. Ethyl and Richard were members of Christ United Methodist Church when they first moved to Memphis, both active in a variety of ways. Richard served as a Steward, and Ethyl taught Sunday School for 4 year olds, had a Cub Scout Den, and
Older Adults was director of the Acolytes. While there, the Adult SS class they attended was taught by Winfield Dunn, later governor of Tennessee. They moved to Germantown in 1962 when all roads were two lane and there was no stoplight in the village. Their house in Germantown Heights was quite rural, with horse stables within walking distance, woods, and a pond adjacent to the area that is now the original Saddle Creek. They were active in the community and, in 1975, were part of a small group of start-up investors for the Bank of Germantown. The bank prospered and made it easier for local builders to obtain loans for the building boom of Germantown in the 1980’s. Richard and Ethyl joined GUMC in 1975 where Richard was already serving as an Assistant Scout Master for the church sponsored troop. They were active members of the Finney SS Class, occasionally taught Sunday School, and helped with the many activities in which their sons were involved. Ethyl is still a member of the UMW and the More Friends Circle, and faithfully attends worship. Both can be seen exercising regularly at the OLEC. Both Richard and Ethyl were products of the Great Depression, and both know the value of hard work and the joy that comes from a job well done. Ethyl offers this summary:
“I never dreamed as a child that I would have such a wonderful life as I have, married to my husband and to have two fine sons. I thank God each day for his blessings and guidance.” Story by Beverly Rhoads

Owings Life Enrichment Center See what others have to say about Flux Pilates... GUMC Member Nancy Barnett has been doing Pilates with Erika for almost 9 years. Q. Nancy, How did you get into Pilates? A. I had trained with another trainer previously, but never really fully understood the basics. I found Erika through a friend of mine who was being trained by her in a midtown studio. Erika started training me at my home. She has a way of really getting you to click in with the cues that allow you to connect to your core muscles that are needed during the workout and in daily life. Q. Nancy, what do you love most about Pilates? A. I love feeling stretched after my workouts as well as the strength training, both are blended in during your session using the Reformers, Springboards and Combo chairs. You know your body loves it when you miss it from being away for a bit, for example out of town, etc. That first session back my body really needed it—I can tell it missed it! Q. Nancy, did you come to Pilates with any issues that you feel Pilates has helped? A. Yes. My lower back hurt and ached randomly. Once my body became regulated to my regular Pilates practice, my low back aches dissipated. When I feel my back, I know what to do, engaging my deeper core muscles allows my back to be protected and my core takes over for those tight low back muscles. They get a break. After a while it becomes second nature, this way of thinking and I can be in line at the grocery store and know how to correct it.
Save These Dates Fall Soccer registration opens July 12 and continues until August 9. Register online.
Cathy Whitaker took Pilates reformer for several months at another facility about 5 years ago and loved the results, but it became too expensive to continue sessions at that facility. A few years later, she developed trouble with her knees and had total knee replacement. She is now taking it again but at the OLEC through Flux Pilates Studio. Q. Cathy, why do you practice Pilates? A. I practice Pilates to add another form of exercise to my cardio program. I also wanted to strengthen my core and other muscles. Q. Cathy, Did you come to Pilates with any issues that you feel Pilates has helped? A. I was concerned about doing certain exercises that might hurt my knee. I had avoided musclebuilding exercises out of concern that I was not strong enough to do them anymore or that I might injure myself. I have found that I am able to strengthen and tone many muscles! Q. What do you love the most about Pilates? A. I love the physical/health benefits and the individualized instruction I receive from Erika. She has a gentle and understanding approach to instruction! I also love that the spring tension system on the reformer can be adjusted for exactly what I personally need to increase my strength. The movements are all gentle resistance rather than jerky, harsh or harmful movements. Q. Cathy, Why is Pilates important to you? A. Pilates is important to me because it is an additional way to meet my health goals. I was getting bored with my cardio routine. Pilates has spiced up my regimen. Q. What would you say to someone who wants to try Pilates but is apprehensive to start? A. I would recommend anyone try Pilates. If I can do it, anyone can! Don’t let your fears keep you away. I’d recommend you set up an appointment with Erika and give it a test run! She’s awesome!
Basketball registration begins August 23. 13

CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE One hundred and seventy-five years ago, our ancestors established a new church here in Germantown. This year we will celebrate these 175 years of growth and the change within these walls and within our own spirits. All members of Germantown United Methodist are invited to send ideas and suggestions for celebratory events to Renee Pearl (758-6519 or rpearl@germantownumc.org) as soon as possible. We need photos, anecdotes, and testimonials. In other words, we want YOU tell us how you think the celebration should be done and how YOU can help. This is really going to be a big, months-long celebration. Everyone should be, and will want to be, a part of it.
