A Message from Tim An Early Church Lesson Acts 11:26b: "The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch." NIV Acts 13:1 "Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers; Barnabas, Simeon Called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul." NIV As one studies the Book of Acts, it becomes apparent that the earliest church lived in a society of many different peoples and cultures, much like we do in America today. Antioch was the third largest city in the world after Rome and Alexandria with a population of around a half-million. It was near the port city of Seleucia, and people from the known world visited and settled in the city. In that city, the followers of Jesus first bore the name "Christian". They received the name possibly as a term of derision, but the leaders of the church were bold and faithful. Acts 13 tells us their names: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen, and Saul. A deeper reading also tells us more then their names. We know that Barnabas was from Cyprus (Acts 4:36), an island off the coast of Lebanon and below Turkey. Simeon was called Niger, and could be the same Simon from Cyrene recorded as carrying the cross of Jesus. (Acts 11:20 tells us that certain men from Cyrene and Cyprus first spread the gospel in Antioch.) Whether the same person, tradition tells us Simeon was from Africa. Lucius was certainly from Cyrene, in Libya. Manaen was raised with Herod the Tetrarch, thus we know he was raised in Rome. Saul was from Tarsus, a Roman colony in Turkey. The first leaders of the church were both dark skinned and light skinned, and represented the three major continents of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Holy Spirit was working in persons from all over the world. As Peter stated in Acts 10:34, "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism." As our nation struggles with race relations, the church is in a unique position to teach and to live out that truth. The intent of the Spirit that none should perish and all should live is in the DNA of the church, the beginnings of the very term "Christian". May we bear out in our lives no harboring of prejudice, and may we pray, love, and show mercy to all. The mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. No matter the race. No matter the home. No matter the culture. Like the early church, the first who bore the name Christian, may we live where the Spirit of God is stronger than divisions of race and culture. May we show respect to all. And like Peter, may we recognize that God does not show favoritism.
I Would Have Asked, If Only I'd Known In the 3000+ community that is Germantown United Methodist Church, we find doctors and carpenters, electricians, and lawyers, bakers and teachers, financial planners and landscape artists. We also find that there are questions and problems and opportunities that these members of this body of Christ can address and resolve. Will you share your skills, knowledge, and talents with GUMC when we need: direction for installing an irrigation system or evaluating a roofing proposal; someone to interpret for a non-English speaking visitor or sign one of our worship services; play a musical instrument or greet people as they enter for worship; to replace a broken window or decide which painting proposal is best? We have already a strong corps of volunteers in GUMC. Will you join us? If you are led to offer the skills that you have to maintaining this house of the Lord, please send the following information to our Campus Manager, Mr. Brook Crihfield, bcrihfield@germantownumc.org, or Ms. Mary Groh at mgroh@germantownumc.org.
GUMC Sends Support to Texas Members of GUMC sent over fifty UMCOR approved cleaning buckets to relief efforts in Texas. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) exists because UM churches everywhere pay into the general church apportionment line in our budget. With this emergency relief committee in place, 100% of all funds donated for specific emergencies go to provide relief for those emergencies. In addition, physical help such as the cleaning buckets are time tested and time proven ways to get help directly to where it is needed. These five gallon round, resealable buckets are filled with specific items. The supplies cost about $55.00. A list of supplies can be found on the GUMC web page or on-line at UMCOR. Members of GUMC transported our buckets on Sunday to Christ UMC in Memphis where both church's material relief was sent off to help the efforts. We are uncertain of the amount of money Sunday school classes, prayer groups, and others collected and sent to UMCOR for the relief effort. As the Bible tells us, though, "So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9). We have responded to Hurricane Harvey. Let us prepare to respond to the damage done by Hurricane Irma as well. Watch the email and web site for information on how to respond best. And let us give thanks for the connected church in mission that is the United Methodist Church.
October Communion Offering Our October communion offering will go to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. With the work required to help the people caught in the path of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, as well as other relief efforts, UMCOR can use a bit of good news in the form of our financial support. Here is the information found on UMCOR's web page. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe. UMCOR's work includes programs and projects in disaster response, health, sustainable agriculture, food security, relief supplies, and more. UMCOR is a ministry of The United Methodist Church through the General Board of Global Ministries, and our goal is to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. We believe all people have God-given worth and dignity. UMCOR's work reaches people in more than 80 countries, including the United States. We provide humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupt life to such an extent that communities are unable to recover on their own. While UMCOR cooperates with other aid organizations to extend our reach, our most important partners are the people we serve. We are confident that successful solutions to emergency or chronic conditions begin with the affected population. UMCOR provides these survivors not only temporary relief but long-term education, training, and support. UMCOR spends 100 percent of designated donations on the projects our donors specify. When UMCOR donors give their time, money, and supplies, they join UMCOR as the hands and feet of Christ. Mission Statement Compelled by Christ to be a voice of conscience on behalf of the people called Methodist, UMCOR works globally to alleviate human suffering and advance hope and healing. United Methodist Committee on Relief has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities. 2

Kickoff Dinner Wrap-Up GUMC won the toss and elected to Kickoff the Fall with over 200 players... err... members attending! The event, coached and coordinated by Janelle Crist, included hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by the men of the Emmaus Sunday School Class and everyone brought their favorite tailgate dishes which we all shared. Dozens of teams in the high school and college football world were represented with decorated tables and shirts. Fight songs and Alma Maters played on the PA as we all assembled for dinner. And a few discovered alumni brothers and sisters they hadn't realized were members of the church. Reverends Tim, Brad, and Erin greeted everyone with team spirit and excitement. Highlights and game plans for the upcoming year were shared by the GUMC coaches... I mean... programming staff. We would love to see you on the field with the rest of the congregation! It's not too late to get in the game! Sign up for a small group study... join a Sunday school class... attend worship... volunteer with one of our mission projects... join the choir. Whatever your talent, we have a place for you on our team. Let us know and we will be sure to get you in the lineup! 5

The proceeds are given to the missions that GUMW supports. Each person who works the Roll Bake and who purchases rolls is serving as God's hands and feet through this service. Anyone is welcome to help! We love our volunteers and no task is too difficult. On baking days, we start early each morning and make the dough from scratch, then set it aside to rise. When it has risen, each pan of rolls is divided into 12 sections of dough that are then dipped in warm butter and dredged in cinnamon. They are then knotted and shaped into the delicious rolls and baked. The rolls can also be frozen then reheated for a wonderful treat! The proceeds from your purchase of our Cinnamon Rolls will benefit these GUMW missions:
