August 2019 Staying True to the Story: The Art of Josh Rowan by Dan Cross

Despite having no formal training beyond high school art class, Josh Rowan has become one of the most talented and in-demand tattoo artists in the St. Louis area. He has taught himself how to use Photoshop, won an international digital art award, and has become one of the coolest and most successful illustrators/graphic designers in the Midwest. As if that’s not enough, he taught himself photography at the same time and is now selling books of his spectacular shots from all around the country. Not bad for a kid from Carlyle, Illinois. I caught up with Josh on the phone recently in his van near Salt Lake City, Utah, where he is on the first leg of a two-month photography expedition to Alaska. How he became such a successful and diverse artist is a fascinating story of circumstance, hard work, and what can only be called innate talent. But it all kind of happened by accident. He went to college to study music and did so until he felt like they had nothing left to teach him. Then, in September of 1996, some of his friends opened a tattoo shop in Fairview Heights, IL, called Inkwell, and they invited Josh to join them as an apprentice. Doing tattoos proved to be a great learning experience for all his future artistic endeavors. “When you do tattoos, you end up working with clients, talking to them about concepts, helping them to visualize abstract images they have in their heads, and in a day’s time you have to flip-flop your brain around a myriad of styles and designs. There isn’t much difference between that and doing graphic design for a commercial client. And since the work is so unforgiving, it forces you to learn a little bit quicker.” When Inkwell started, tattoo art was still more of an underground thing. “There was probably one-tenth the number of people doing tattoos as there is today.” In those days, customers often relied on tattoo “flash,” poster boards of designs that hung in every shop. Much of this flash was dated, designs from the 70’s and 80’s. Seeing the need for more modern designs, Josh started producing and selling flash art to other shops. “I was selling sets of flash on eBay and learning that there was a market, which led to travel. I’d drive to Nashville or Denver, and go around to all the tattoo shops to show our work and sell it, and that would usually give me enough money to stay on the road for a few weeks at a time, taking pictures and exploring, which I really enjoyed.” Eventually, Josh landed a distribution deal with Bullseye, which helped spread his work even further. “At one time, and this is no exaggeration, my tattoo designs were in more than 50% of the tattoo shops in America. But eventually, as tattoo art became more popular and there were TV shows about it and photos all over the internet, the market for flash really declined.” A side effect of doing tattoos was that it prompted Josh to learn photography. “You have to take pictures of your work, and I just couldn’t figure it out—this was pre-digital. I realized I had to learn how cameras work, so I’d walk around all day with a notepad, taking pictures and writing down the settings I used, and that’s how I learned about aperture and shutter speed and exposure.” Making flash also led Josh to an interest in digital illustration, another learning challenge for him to tackle. “I said to myself, I do not understand 6

Gesso Magazine

how people are making cool, smooth graphics with a computer, so I threw myself headlong into learning it. After two years of that, I ended up winning an international award and got a show of my work at the LA Center for Digital Arts.” As all this was happening, his interest in doing tattoos on people started to decline. “When someone gets a tattoo on their body, it’s really their art. You’re just kind of an implement to help them produce it.” So as Josh became interested in doing art that was more permanent and that more people could see, he focused increasingly on his graphic design work. He went into business with another tattoo artist to create a short-lived clothing brand called MATW (Me Against The World) which led to one of his biggest breaks. The owner of upstart local brewery 4Hands contacted his business partner to see if he was interested in doing design work for them. “They decided to look for someone local, and someone with a tattoo background, to tap into that culture, because tattoo artists see all walks of life—everyone from judges to librarians to teachers to drug dealers. So it’s a good way to reach a wide spectrum of people.” Josh’s business partner wasn’t interested in the job, but told them they should talk to Josh. So they did, and the rest is history. “For the last 7 or 8 years, I’ve done over 150 labels. 95% of what you see from that company was filtered through me. I’ve gotten a lot of fulfillment out of that. If you want a lot of people to see your work, this does that much more than gallery shows.” Next time you crack open a 4Hands brew, take some time to marvel at the can, if you haven’t already. Every can is a little work of art! Styles range from Mexican Day of the Dead figures, steampunk contraptions, circus freak show posters, 19th century etchings, B horror movies, underground comics, and everything in between. A veritable moving gallery! Success has a downside, of course. “4Hands grew and really dominated my time; and whenever I do something that takes that much of my energy, my brain ends up swinging 180 degrees to something else. I was held captive and wasn’t able to travel, so all I wanted to do was go on the road and take pictures.” He had trouble justifying that urge—until he met

GessoMagazine.com

August 2019 local artist Libby Reuter. They launched a collaborative project called Watershed Cairns, which involved building and photographing glass cairns (carefully balanced stacks of vases, wine glasses, plates, beakers, etc.) in interesting settings in the natural world (on the shore of a rocky stream, in a cave, in front of an active forest fire). “Since I had dedicated myself to doing the project with her, that made it easier to justify going out and travelling to do that. It also helped me refine my photography skills. When we took that project on the road, along the whole length of the Missouri River, for example, that forced me to learn to set up quickly, scout a location, find a good composition, get the shot, and move on.” Visit watershedcairns.com to see the results of this productive collaboration. It’s brilliant environmental work, reminiscent of Andy Goldsworthy’s ephemeral sculptures of sticks and leaves, or Christo’s visionary but temporary landscape artworks like Running Fence. Josh was in a talkative mood, since he had already been on the road for days, barely speaking to anyone. “After about three days, I notice a change happening in me. I’ll spend a little longer talking to the guy at the gas station, something I normally wouldn’t do, just because it’s nice to talk to people again.” He seemed to enjoy telling the story of his career, something I gathered he hadn’t really done before. And that takes us to today where we find Josh in his happy place: In his van, out in the vast American West, taking pictures (and doing paid work for 4Hands from the road). In the past few years, he has traveled from Newfoundland to the US/Mexico border, from Iceland to the Salton Sea in California, from Lake Superior to the Dominican Republic, documenting the diverse landscapes with that incredible artistic eye of his. It’s that incredible eye of Josh’s that made me decide to contact him. I consider myself a decent photographer; I’ve probably had 10 different cameras, each better than the last, and as a film teacher, I understand camera technology as well as the design principles you need to do good work. I

travel a lot too, and spend lots of time shooting and editing my photos (which have often appeared in Gesso Magazine). Yet, when I see Josh’s work, I’m absolutely humbled. Even when I’ve shot in the same locations he does, his images are on a level all their own. Every single one I’ve seen is absolutely transcendent and magical. How one person with a camera can get such better shots than everyone else is a great mystery to me. So how does he do it? What makes a good picture? “Composition is always #1,” he explains. “But you didn’t go to art school,” I object. “So how do you know when you have a good composition? Do you use the Rule of Thirds, the Golden Ratio, what?” Josh laughs. “I learned something while tattooing and talking to customers about designs. Some people just don’t have the capacity to visualize an abstract image. For people like that, people who need something to help them, the rule of thirds is great. But the rules actually messed me up for awhile.” “So how do you do it then?” I ask, genuinely perplexed. Josh hesitates, and finally starts somewhat apologetically. “I’ll try to explain, but this is going to sound very esoteric, and I know some people won’t understand. But there is something that goes on inside of me. My mom had this little collection of toys that she had played with as a kid, and I used to play with them. One of them was a little plastic bubble with a cardboard picture inside with three holes, and little BBs that you would roll around and try to get in the holes. Today, when I’m taking a picture and composing an image, I experience the same feeling: I move the camera around until all of the elements just drop into place and I know I have it.” “So how much cropping do you do in post?” I ask. As every hack photographer knows, it’s really easy to just crop photos on the computer to get a little tighter on your subject or cut out something distracting in the background of the shot. “I never crop,” Josh says. “That’s one of my rules. I don’t want to throw away any pixels by cropping something out. I want the maximum amount of information in case I want to enlarge the image later. But also, I try to stay true to the story.” Check out Josh’s website, JoshuaRowan.com, to see what he means by that. The way he captures the story of the places he visits is just astonishing. A colorful aurora borealis reflecting in a mountain lake. The smoke from forest fires driven by global warming obscuring a Montana mountain, making it look like a ghostly apparition. A weathered and abandoned homestead on the Kansas prairie framed perfectly by two dead trees. A toppled gas station roof surrounded by empty desert with a large red TRUMP painted on the side. The massive steel wall of the US/Mexico border running rigidly across the land like a metallic Running Fence but then just abruptly ending in wide open, undissected desert. Josh recently released his second book of photography, part of a planned series of fifteen volumes, each of a different location. You can purchase a copy, or subscribe to receive all fifteen volumes at https://joshuarowanphotography.com Buy his work! We need his eye out there, capturing the magic of the world for the rest of us to see.

August 2019

Sarah Selders I was born and raised in Southern California. My family relocated to Omaha, Nebraska when I was just 15 years old. As a girl I always had a natural ability and desire in the arts, both visual and musical. I currently live in SW Iowa in the town of Atlantic with two of my three sons, Daniel 25, Nathan 22, and Alekzander 11.

Art Meets

I have many artistic influences from classical to post-modern but I think three that I have always rooted my soul in are Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, and Marcel Duchamp. I enjoy the idea of merging spiritual, personal and surrealistic experience in my art. Another big influence in my art was my late husband James B. Selders whom I learned many insightful things from and who opened my mind to the vast meaning of art and how it relates to the human experience. After his passing Art left me. I found no joy in creating art for many years and often wondered how or if I would ever do art again. After meeting a new friend, who later became the love of my new life and my muse, Scot von Nida sparked a fire in me! Inspired by his skills to overcome extreme adversity, much like myself, I began to create once again!! I am constantly evolving and recreating myself as a person and likewise as an artist, always in a state of flux. I seem to have one constant in my process however, the use of found objects and repurposed materials. I have always felt a spiritual connection to objects of antiquity, and curiosity which I collect to then transform into something new and unique. I am interested in the idea of using symbolism with the juxtaposition of objects or painted imagery to express a certain idea or feeling or emotion in my work. I enjoy collecting the items that appeal to me from various sources; thrift stores, junk shops, flea markets, antique shops, on-line swaps and sales, the woods, just where ever and whatever grabs my spirit and reaches out to me. I utilize traditional art materials, as well, in the transformation of these objects, giving them new life! I feel this speaks to the experience of my life, which is Art! I studied visual art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I worked under a menagerie of great artists and professors, the most significant of which are as follows: David Helm, Barb Simcoe, Peter Hill, Bonnie O’Connell, Larry Bradshaw and Kelly Adams.

Scot and Sarah are a colorful and dynamic duo both in life and in their art. They were the first visual artists to join the Art meets Vintage Gallery in October 2018 and I couldn’t be more pleased to exhibit their work. You’ll never meet two more kind, talented, or passionate artists. Their shared space at AMV pairs Scot’s bold and often experimental painting style with Sarah’s creativity in transforming everyday objects into extraordinary works of art. I’m most excited to see the blending of their styles on new collaborative pieces featured at their gallery opening in August. - Gregory Dierlam / Proprietor

Scot A. von Nida As a child I realized art was a way to escape my reality in a sense. A native to St. Louis and coming from a family with 5 kids, it was a loving environment however, structured, very competitive and extremely rambunctious at times. My father was straight forward, very strict and highly creative! My mother, manipulative, but kind hearted in her later years, also finds joy in making art. I’ve learned that art is a way of life. Some of us start out very young seeing things as they truly are, having the sense to put it in a color frame of expression. The food of inspiration comes from all aspects of life. Being able to digest it and release it back gives a great sense of accomplishment. I am Scott A. von Nida, a 57 year old man. Repairing furniture is my trade. Art is my life. I love, live and learn art daily. I like to think of myself as constantly evolving in my art. I also enjoy extreme mountain biking, martial arts, and I, along with my entire family, am an avid motorcycle enthusiast. I’m lucky to have found my partner in life, love and art, Sarah Selders. She has been an inspiration to me and is extremely talented. She and I are constantly pushing the envelope and meshing our skills as a woven blanket. She is amazing! I have two sons, Jeremy 40, and Nathaniel 12, who are my life, and like my art, I put a lot of love and time into creating a solid foundation and putting all of myself into their upbringing before letting them go to touch the world with their greatness! Knowing I’ve released something special into the world pleases me greatly. My art, like my sons, will live on past my years continuing to share pieces of me with those who enjoy my work when I am dead and free!

“Midwest Salute to the Arts” by John Dorroh

When I was in middle school, I had an art teacher, Fran Land, who not only taught me art but who instilled in me an appreciation of art. When we were studying perspective, for example, she arranged for a field trip to Birmingham, Alabama, where we set up painting stations on street corners. As young artists, we saw first-hand what she meant by perspective, seeing how the buildings seem to get smaller as the distance between us and them increased. Fran Land made sure that that was not the end of the project. She sent our finished pieces to a gallery in San Francisco, where they were critiqued by artists living in the Bay Area. Think about that and let it settle in your head. Heavy-duty for any artist, let alone 7th and 8thgraders. Wow! This is similar to one of the events for young artists (see “Special features” below) that will happen at the quickly-approaching Midwest Salute to the Arts.

revamped the venue into a horseshoe-shaped configuration with paved sidewalks. Newly remodeled pavilions and a green space make this venue feel comfortable and open. Part of the point of art fairs is that the artist themselves are accessible for guests, as well as their works. But perhaps there are few art fairs where the artists are so accessible as The Salute: with its low-key, family atmosphere, it’s common for artists to quickly step from their booth to go over and work on art with children in their area. And for children, there will be an interactive children’s Creation Station, plus an art gallery for the young ones. The interactive Creation Station and Children’s Gallery will provide 5 – 13-year-olds with unique opportunities. Workshops for kids have been designed to foster an interest and participation in art at an early age. When young ones enter the secure area, they will choose “their own” pieces of art free from parental influence and have a chance to have a conversation with “their own artist” as they create their own take-home piece of artwork. The children’s gallery offers plenty of opportunities to actually create art and let kids get their hands painty. Returning family favorites, The Bubble Bus and caricatures by Randall Spriggs, will once again also grace the Children’s Area. There will be food!!! At least eight vendors for food and soft drinks and for adult beverages will be located in two areas, one to the north and one to the south sides of the fair.

Dates and location…what to expect: Please be sure to mark your calendars for the following dates: August 23, 24 and 25. Those are the days that Everett Moody Park (529 Ruby Lane) in Fairview Heights will be ground-zero for a free and family-friendly arts fest, complete with food, drink, and live music. Informational booths will be staffed to help educate festival-goers on a variety of subjects. The 31st annual Midwest Salute to the Arts promises to be one of the largest displays of fine art in Illinois. Expect to see some 100 local, regional and national artists displaying and selling their work. Many artists return from across the nation each year because they’ve come to love the city and the people, and the juried fair and prize money certainly doesn’t hurt either (Cash prizes total $17,000). With the changes to the layout, this year’s fair will be more compact, more engaging; everything is more easily accessible. The city has 26

A brief history: How did Fairview Heights become the site of a nationally recognized outdoor art festival? It began over 30 years ago when a former alderman, Gene Ellerbusch, took a trip to Mystic, Connecticut, which was hosting an outdoor arts festival. He was so impressed that he brought it to the attention of the makers and shakers in Fairview Heights. After the City Council decided that their city could replicate the Mystic festival, they appointed Mrs. Billy McLemore to spearhead a

Their decision was reinforced to go ahead with the planning of the first arts festival in Fairview Heights. The Midwest Salute to the Masters was established with the goal of combining the community involvement of the Mystic, Connecticut, festival with the super-high standards of the one in Orlando. That first show took place the weekend of October 1-2,1988, and was wellreceived by the community and the artists who took part. Thirty years later, the festival is, as they say, bigger and better than ever.

Mixed Media - Works that incorporate more than one type of physical material in their production. Painting (Oils, Acrylics, and Watercolor) - Creation of a still life, portrait, landscape, abstract, or other image on a flat surface, with oil, acrylics, or watercolor. Photography - Process of capturing images of objects by the action of light, then printing the images, by chemical or digital means, onto a flat surface. Sculpture - Three-dimensional works done in any medium. Fine Craft/Wood - Any material or construction may be used; to include fiber, hand weaving, wood, etc. Art objects either functional or decorative or hand tooled or machine worked, turned or carved. Also speaking of art, there will be two active art demonstration areas. One will be on the Southeast corner of the grounds. There you can find daily demonstrations by members of the Gateway East Artist Guild presenting a wide variety of artistic mediums and skill levels. Also you’ll find woodcarving displays and demonstrations by members of the Midwest Woodcarvers (aka: Belleville Holzschnitzers), plying their crafts of whittling, carving, cutting, and shaping of all things wood. Plus members of the Artisan Guild of Southern Illinois. Members there will share their fine craftwork, heavily rooted in heritage arts and fine crafts, such as weaving, spinning, needle crafts, leather, and pottery.

Speaking of art: Some 100 juried artists will be exhibiting their work in one of the following categories: Clay - Art objects, either functional or decorative of earthenware, porcelain, or tile, made by shaping and then firing. No machine-made or mass-produced work is permitted. Drawing/Printmaking (Graphics) - Drawings are works on paper using pencil, crayon, ink, charcoal, pastels and a variety of other marking media. Printmaking is a transfer process of producing original art, usually in multiples. Glass - Glass works that are functional or decorative by design and are kiln formed or crafted by glass blowing, molding or casting. Works may be etched or engraved. Jewelry (Precious Metal) - Creating artwork through the forging, twisting and fabricating of various precious metals. All jewelry, produced from metal, glass, clay, fiber, paper, plastic or other materials which include precious metals.

The second area, the Gesso Magazine Artist Demonstration Area, will be near the Northeast corner of the grounds and near to the Gesso Stage. Two or more artists at a time, rotating approximately every two hours each day, will display their talents in multiples of mediums - oil and acrylic painting, sculpture, graphite drawing, digital art, and even painting with wine. The common denominator of these numerous artists is that each has been featured in Gesso Magazine, in print and/ or online.

August 2019 “Lead and Circus” is for 2-4 players. Each player needs a pen or pencil of their own color and a piece of paper folded in half. Players score points by playing “LITS” into the grid. LITS are four shapes of polyonimoes shown here:

You are cordially invited to volume number six! This left column of games will remain the same trusty games with a different setup each month, while the right column will introduce new games monthly. Want to support more games like these? Want next month’s issue before it goes to print?Join our patreon at: Patreon.com/DankByDesign Bring as many eggs to the exit of the dungeon as you can carrying them in your inventory. Each skeleton is worth 1VP when defeated but undefeated costs 1 heart (1VP) when encountered. If you have no hearts you may not cross over a skeleton without a sword. Items are one time use! All items take 1 inventory slot and you must have empty inventory slots to pick them up. Use of any item means it is discarded and items may not be discarded without first using them. Eggs may never be discarded. You may cross a space more than once. Dark spaces require the use of one torch to travel through each time, even if already traveled through before. Unlike previous dungeons you may not travel diagonally. Start at the S and end at the E.

There are two phases to the game: Collosseum AND Diplomacy and may continue as many rounds necessary until the grid is full. Collosseum: Each player begins with 144 gladiators. Each round they may bid blindly (writing down on a piece of folded paper) any amount of gladiators into combat (not exceeding 12.) Everyone simultaneously reveals the amount of gladiators they’ve bid this round and the winner gets to select the one piece (L, I, T or S) that each player will place on the grid during the following diplomacy phase (One per player not repeating.) Ties go to the player willing to sacrifice the most gladiators at the moment after reveal; as revealed by simultaneous reveal, until resolved. Diplomacy: Each player has their own side of the grid. A player may place their first LITS (whichever letter they choose) into the grid as their first action of the game beginning in any square of the grid on their side that they like. After the first letter placed on the grid, every letter a player places on the grid must be the letter chosen by the winner of the collosseum phase but the placement on the grid is both up to the player and defined by these rules: You may only play letters onto the board sharing corners (NOT SIDES) with letters of your own color that you have already placed onto the grid. At the end of the game: each square of your color is worth one victory point (VP.) Regardless of color, letters cannot be placed onto the board sharing more than one side (not corner) with any letter already placed onto the board. If a letter is chosen for you by a winner of the previous collosseum phase that won’t follow these two rules then you are excluded from this diplomacy phase. The highest score with the most remaining gladiators wins the game.

Sword- Defeats 1 skeleton Torch- Travel through 1 dark space

When there is less than four players: whichever “letter/s” were not chosen gain +1 square each round they are not chosen for anyone. (improvised however a player likes while attached to the shape chosen for them.)

Key- Unlock 1 chest or 1 door Egg- Score 2VP when brought to E Ice- May not turn on ice unless if stopped by a dark space or edge. Chest- Score 5VP when unlocked Warp- Transports you to any other warp, any time you step onto one. Door- Blocks travel in all directions.

Escaping this room requires you to figure out the password for the door. Solve the password based on how many letters long the code is, the selection of letters you have to choose from and what the room looks like! You may use a letter more than once. Check back each month for the password to escaping from last month’s room! Volume #5’s Password: “BOW”

August 2019 Something Old, Something New - An Enchanted Night Stay Awaits You Written by: Carrie Paul

“Summertime and the livin’s easy...” – and it’s finally here in full swing in the Midwest. Summer has always been one of my favorite seasons and evokes many fond memories, as well as anticipation for the long lazy days and hot summer nights. It is the perfect season for love to bloom and was the time of year I chose to get married. Weddings often contain sentimental details and personal touches which are as necessary as “something blue” to make the ceremony and reception a standout celebration. From invitations, photos, cake toppers, and surprise tributes, weddings embrace a couple’s vision for their perfect day, and the choice of venue or hotel in which to stay the night sets the atmosphere for what is hopefully one of the happiest days of the year. I chose Clayton as the area in which to have my own wedding and picked The Cheshire Hotel (Inn and Lodge) which met my old-world vision to stay for that special night.

The area of Clayton, approximately seven miles west of the Mississippi River and downtown Saint Louis, was recognized almost two centuries ago as having great potential. Ralph Clayton purchased a tract of land from John McKnight, formerly held by Charles Gratiot, and is the “father” of the area which now bears his name. Situated at the border of Clayton-Richmond Heights and Saint Louis City, the origins of what is today, The Cheshire, began somewhere around the time of the “roaring twenties.” Near the outskirts of Forest Park once stood an A&W Root Beer stand at 7036 Clayton Rd. This was a prime location due to its proximity to the street carline and the park, and with prohibition in full swing, ice cream and root beer were popular refreshments for people of that time. A Saint Louis native and thenpopular silent movie star actress named Blossom Breneman married an amateur golfer named William Medart, who was also from the area, after they had met in Hollywood at an event in the late 1920’s. They decided to return to Saint Louis to try their hand at something relatively new, making hamburgers, and opened “The Cottage” at the site of that root beer stand. Bill would cook the hamburgers, which were increasing in popularity as the Great Depression hit, and Blossom baked the pies. This later evolved into a restaurant called Bill Medart’s which included dinner items and sandwiches. As popularity increased, so did the size of the restaurant complex. A Tudor-style tavern was added called “Olde 32

Cheshire” based on a 14th century cottage the couple visited when they vacationed in England. Around 1945, as WWII drew to a close, further expansion included a replica of an English village and included a Crown Bar, Sandwich Shop, banquet rooms, and basement café. In 1949, the Rose and Crown opened for leisurely dining pleasure-seekers.

Cheese with crackers, Budweiser products, fried chicken, and hot and cold sandwiches were served to eager diners and the restaurant became the “swank place” to go. While vacationing in Europe in the 1950’s, tragedy struck, and Bill Medart passed away from a fall after he had been drinking (www.losttables.com). In the 1960’s, the restaurant complex was acquired by Stephen Apted who was the son of Florence Hulling Apted. Florence ran several successful cafeterias downtown, known fondly as Miss Hulling’s Cafeterias. Stephen ran the re-opened and expanded restaurant as The Cheshire Inn and had a hotel complex (lodge) built and a swimming pool added on the west side of the property. The complex included 7 banquet rooms, the King’s Arms Pub, a Lion’s Den Cocktail Lounge, bakery, and Antiquery gift shop. My father’s cousin, Robert (known by many as Bobby) Salsman, started out as a cocktail server and waiter in the banquet area during the grand opening and later rose to become a well-known head caterer there, making headlines in the socialite section of the newspaper. He worked there for much of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Many local celebrity events were catered in the banquet reception rooms there. Mrs. Charlotte Peters, a famous tv personality on KSD-TV and KTVI who had her own tv show, often held banquets at The Cheshire. (Her son, Mike Peters, went on to draw the beloved comic strip Mother Goose and Grim). Bobby explained to me with fondness how the hotel was the “it place” to be and be seen in its heyday. Parties were catered for The Muny, Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Zoo, and the Saint Louis Blues hockey team by The Cheshire staff. My father bartended at the Cheshire’s Rose and Crown Bar, Fox and Hounds Tavern, and many of the banquet halls in the late 1960’s and he met my mother while working there. He distinctly remembered the London Transport double-decker bus which once took people from The Cheshire to Forest Park and sporting events daily. At night many musicians, radio, and tv personnel would head there for a night of dancing and conversation. My dad particularly remembered Bob Cuban and his bandmates going there.

August 2019 Needless to say, this place held a very special place in my heart too, since my parents had met there. In my day (1990’s), the bar known to my group of friends as the Cheshire Lounge (Inn) was on one side of the complex and the cozy, yet charming English Fox and Hounds Tavern and Lodge area was still in operation on the other side. I would venture here for late night fun and socializing usually after 11 PM. I found it quite intriguing and impactful as a place I would continually be drawn to, despite the passage of time. I always enjoyed roaming the hotel, saying hello to the grizzly bear in the lobby, and drinking brandy while playing chess on the side tables at the Fox and Hounds Tavern. I enjoyed people-watching as couples drank halfyards of beer from bartenders who were some of the friendliest in the area, while others signed “secret” sign in sheets hidden in various furniture pieces. I had my first date with my husband at the Fox and Hounds Tavern; we played chess on the table that night while the piano man played us a tune. The Cheshire closed its doors in the mid 2000’s and was sold and later rehabbed in 2011 by Lodging Hospitality Management. It has since been updated into one of the most amazing luxury hotel boutiques Saint Louis has to offer, still maintaining its charm and character from the past. There is an onsite Starbucks for coffee lovers, a courtyard with food and beverage service, a wonderful poolside terrace, a sleek basement gastropub called Basso which has amazing Italian cuisine, an acclaimed restaurant called Boundary which offers fresh seafood and seasonal cuisine, a private cigar lounge called The Back Room, and the most passionate and friendly staff you could ever hope to meet. British novelty-themed suites with luxurious amenities include Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Treasure Island Room complete with nautical décor, Ian Flemings’s James Bond Room with 1960’s mod décor and pool access, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Room complete with Renaissance art and décor furnishings, and many other famous authors whose books await you in the rooms they’ve inspired. No two rooms are the same, and each room offers its own unique experience. To my delight the Fox and Hounds Tavern is intact, with a few slight upgrades, and the grizzly is as eager to say hello as he was those many years ago. As a “mad cat” in Alice in Wonderland once mentioned, “Well…some

go this way, and some go that way, but as far as me, myself, personally, I prefer the shortcut!” I tend to agree with that old Cheshire cat with the famous grin, and my shortcut takes me back to The Cheshire, where the pool is open, and the drinks are flowing time and time again. An enchanted night stay awaits you, so head there to make your own special memories to cherish for years to come.

Alicia Willis I try not to think of others and compare their art towards mine, because then I’m just worrying about someone else’s rather than my own. My work is based around me, which is people. This theme started in my junior year in high school in AP studio art. I wanted to get better in my realism, and whats the best way to practice is to draw people and animals. I practice, and drew so many drafts on how i’m going to make a picture from a reference pop out of the drawing. My style is based on color and on mixed media. I started to work on realism which is based off proportion and shape of highlights and shadow. Most of the time a regular portrait is “on point” or so real it looks like a picture. Well I didn’t want to do that. My art teacher from high school taught me about pencil control and how smudging is not the ideal way to make the picture pop in your art. Smudging is usually a mess to clean off your paper and especially your hands. So my technique in a way is most of the time precise and sometimes unpredictable, depending on what I am making. In realism, I have twisted its style with my own. I add color to portraits and mixed media, which can be a mixture of many things such as spray-paint, paint, paper, color pencils, and so on. With my style I’m creating a new type of life in a picture, that can be relatable to others and has never been thought of, so I have been told. I am still a student learning new things, and I thank God that he has given me this talent to share with others and a bright future with it.
