Editor’s Word – November 2019
Straight Up Magazine is now Gesso Magazine and it is here with its 52nd edition ‘Serving Up Art, Music and Culture for the Metro Area’s Enjoyment’. The St. Louis Metro deserves its own arts and entertainment magazine. And here it is. It’s called Gesso!!! We are so very pleased to portray Mike Estes as our featured cover artist. Mike is a multifacited artist who is currently focused on a style of wood burning he affectionately refers to as ‘Capturing Lightning’. To view examples of his work and learn more about his process, check out our Submissions section and visit his Facebook and Instagram pages entitled 'The Love Trē'. It is truly a pleasure and an honor for us to share with you a small portion every month of the seemingly boudnless abundance of creativity that our local region endlessly exudes. This last month has been a prolific one for the Gesso Movement. We proudly sponsored and curated a gallery exhibition which runs through mid-November, which includes 18 previously featured artists (including Isobel Abbott-Dethrow, Andrew Adams, Darla Allen, Jake Bishop, Tom Blood, Jessica Canale, Shakayla Clark, Kim Depigian, Taychelle Glen, Michelle Hibling, Amy Iverson, Carol Morgan, Sue Norsigian, Daniel Nygard, Mick O'Day, Kevin Pickard, Mark Polege, Renee Price, and Larry Spencer). Our deepest thanks go out to those artists for their involvement and to all those of you who came to be part of the opening reception. It's not too late to take in all the great art on display. The exhibit will run until November 9th. The Governor French Gallery is curated by Gesso Magazine and is located at 219 W Main Street in beautiful Downtown Belleville, IL. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9am-4pm. Gesso also proudly sponsored the Pumpkins and Picasso: Art on the Farm event at Boonies Farm in Worden, IL which included both displays and demonstrations from several previously featured Gesso artists amongst all the other wodnerful attractions and activities. In this coming month, we are thrilled to feature another wonderful exhibit at The Governor French Gallery: Soil, Rock & Feathers; an Exhibition of Artworks by Susan Bostick, Linda J. Miller, Dennis L. Ringering, & David Yates. The opening reception is November 15th from 5pm-8pm and will include live music from Mikey B. (See the article in this issue for more details). We are also sponsoring the Belleville Main Street Art & Wine Walk as well as the Drums 'n'Percussion Belleville event which includes: Gerry Brown (drummer for Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder), Alex Ligertwood (who performs with Santana), Dirk Brand (of AXXIS), international drumming sensation Uli Frost, German vocalist Elke Marleen Schumacher, and more! Last time Gerry Brown was in town Gesso accompanied him to St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Children, where he greeted long-term patients with hugs, photos and signed drum sticks. This international music event is a production of Melodic Rhythms Music Institution and Sister Cities of Belleville and Paderborn, Germany. We thank our writers for their poignant features and all those who contribute to this project. We appreciate all of those individuals who have submitted their works for publication. November 2019 A Family Tradition: Belleville Christkindlmarkt 2019 by John Dorroh
I was fortunate enough to attend a Christmas Market in Kilkenny, Ireland, a few years ago, on a cold Saturday in mid-December. The sights and smells were incredible! Butchers who had morphed into grillmeisters set up makeshift outdoor venues with their huge smoking grills on the town square. There were fudge and candy vendors, baked goods, old-fashioned wooden toy craftsmen, regional specialties, and hundreds of Christmas trees that created a magical forest for marketgoers.
Other European cities started their own Christkindlmarkts, using the Nuremburg model. Almost every town and city – especially ones throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland – hosts one. Combining food, drink, music, and entertainment, more cities in the United States have caught on: Chicago, Philadelphia, Arlington, TX; Tomball, TX; Washington, DC; San Francisco, Cincinnati; Orlando; Bethlehem, PA; and so many others. Oh…and Belleville, Illinois. Belleville Christkindlmarkt Although there have been five previous Christkindlmarkts in Belleville, this one, as they say, will be bigger and better than ever. Merchants from across the country – and from Europe – will be selling their items in individual booths/chalets, set up on The Square in downtown Belleville in a festive environment. Want to get the Christmas spirit? Come one, come all.
I also visited a smaller “Christlindlmarkt” in Horringhausen, Germany. Although it’s not a large city, the efforts that the citizens made were reflected in the spirit of the market. Everything that I had seen in the larger market was replicated in a scaled-down version. I couldn’t tell who was more excited – the children or the adults. Not one who easily succumbs to the Christmas spirit, I found that in both of these Christkindlmarkt settings, I was overcome with a sense of awe and excitement. To top it off, the presence of live reindeer, local bands playing Christmas music, and more food than I could eat in a year made me so dizzy that I had to sit down. A brief history… Dating back to the mid-16th century, Nuremburg, Germany, hosts what many consider the gold-standard in Christmas markets. It was first mentioned in writing in 1628, and a list from 1737 shows that all Nuremburg craftsmen (and there were many!) were represented. The Christkindlmarkt wasn’t held during World War II but was re-established in 1948. A drama/theatre advisor from the city, Friedrich Broger, wrote a new prologue which has been recited by the Nuremburg Christ Child on opening day ever since. Every year on Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, the “Christkind” officially opens the festivities by reciting a poem. This Christ Child, by tradition, is a young woman between 16 and 19 years old, who is elected by a jury for a two-year term. It’s really a big deal. 6

November 2019 for the child’s personality (see Image Number 3). It is also common to ask a child to draw a picture of himself, his family or other significant aspects of his life. Keep in mind that these tools work with any age client, if they are willing to engage. I do not push art therapy onto any of my clients. Family art therapy is also effectively used, to help see patterns of behavior within a family unit.
WHAT IS ART THERAPY? by Susan Norsigian, Art Therapist, LCPC The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as: “...an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychology theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.” It further succinctly describes the value of this therapeutic modality: “Art therapy, facilitated by a professional art therapist, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensory-motor functions, foster selfesteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.” Art therapy is extremely versatile, and useful in many situations and with a wide variety of clients. I use art therapy with children and adults. You have probably heard the quote “A picture is worth a thousand words.” This oftenrepeated observation is attributed to Fred R. Bernard, an advertising pioneer from the 1920s. Art therapy can be used to explore and process feelings and thoughts already expressed, or, conversely, to search for feelings and patterns, and then process them. It is easily adaptable to, and used in conjunction with, other techniques, such as CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) and family and couples therapy. Becoming aware of behavioral patterns through the creative process can lead to behavioral changes, because awareness is the first step toward change. An example of combining art therapy and CBT is the use of a “time line” to search for patterns of emotions, behavior and abuse throughout one’s life. Seeing a visual image, a concrete picture, can help clarify, “solidify” and validate the client’s thoughts and feelings, leading to, hopefully, progress through behavior changes. The act of being creative stimulates the more emotional part of one’s brain and can tap into subconscious thoughts, making it a valuable tool in searching for behavioral and emotional patterns. For example, an image might come up in a drawing, and, through exploration, be found to be relevant and helpful to a client’s growth and healing. So, talk therapy is often enhanced through the use of images made by the client. In Image Number 1, the artist explored her feeling of being “boxed in” through literally painting boxes. She was aware of her feeling of being trapped, and used her painting to process it, then discuss it and begin to make changes in her life. In Image Number 2, she used drawing to come to terms with feelings of grief around a major change involving an animal that is very important to her. Art therapy is a natural tool with children but is effective with any age. When working with children, I use the “House-Tree-Person” tool to help me get a feel 8
Gesso Magazine
Making visual art often reflects a person’s thought processes as well as mood. To name a few examples, a severely depressed person might portray himself as very small on the page. Missing feet or hands might suggest feeling helpless or useless. A schizophrenic’s art can reflect disorganized thinking, by literally being visually disorganized. An aggressive or angry person might include a lot of sharp edges, sharp teeth. These clues can be very helpful to the therapist as she learns about her client and formulates goals and objectives for treatment. There are several accredited art therapy programs in the United States. Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville is the closest in the metro-east area, and my alma mater. The Art therapy program there is a 3-year master’s of art degree. The program includes all necessary coursework to allow the graduate of the program to take an exam to earn the credential “Licensed Professional Counselor”(LPC.). Once the LPC is earned, the therapist, after two years of supervised work in the field, is eligible to take the NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors) exam to earn the LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) certification. One thing that is important to know and remember, is that art therapy is not about talent or ability to draw or paint or make 3-D work; it’s all about the process. If a finished piece is created, that is a bonus. Often people shy away from the process because they feel they have no artistic ability. The beautiful thing about making images is that the feeling comes through in the work no matter how talented the client. I have seen some powerful images created by people who tell me they “can’t draw a straight line.” Actually, it’s not the straight lines that art therapists are interested in anyway! Susan Norsigian is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in private practice in the StL Metro area. She can be reached at 618-223-4502 / snorsigian@ gmail.com. www.NorsigianCounseling.com

An Interview with Mykael Ash: Resident Artist at H.O.M.E. Jadora Pomerlee, House of Miles East St. Louis (H.O.M.E.) Teen Ambassador, interviewed Mykael Ash, H.O.M.E. Young Adult Ambassador & Resident Artist. The interview took place in the House of Miles East St. Louis. JP: How are you, how’s your day so far? Mykael: I’m good, how are you? JP: I’m well and happy to interview you!!! So, I have a few questions for you. Mykael: Yes, ma’am! JP: I am not sure if our reading audience is aware that Brother Miles (Davis) took a four (4) year sabbatical from music and did just artwork. If you look at his artwork, it is obvious that jazz was some of his inspiration. What started this talent for you and when did you realize you had this GIFT of painting?
JP: I say this time and time again when people ask me why I love H.O.M.E., I tell them when I came and sat down, it felt like Brother Miles was sitting right next to me!!! It was not a scary feeling. It was a very smooth, cool vibe… inviting, if you will… Do you ever feel that? Mykael: ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! You are so right!!!! The presence is not a threatening presence at all!!! Whether I am here or home, especially here though, I can feel his presence and it helps my inspiration for that moment, for that artwork. Sometimes I am here painting at all hours of the night and days and I feel at peace when I am here. JP: Now I told some people that are familiar with your work that I was interviewing you and they asked if I would present their questions. Will that be okay? Mykael: Ok… JP: What inspires you? Mykael: I get most of my inspiration from music and my environment. When I say my environment, I don’t mean just my immediate/East St. Louis. I refuse to be that restricted. I mean the world. I will not be put in society’s box of what I or my artwork should be.
JP: My mom says, “Don’t allow society to put you in a box and don’t put Mykael: Well, I seriously believe I was born to paint. It has always been visions and thoughts in my head that I wanted to express and I really didn’t yourself in a box.” know how to get them across; and drawing and painting was my way of Mykael: Absolutely. There is so much good in and from East St. Louis... and expressing myself. So that’s why I say I was born to paint. there is more to come. JP: Myke, we met at H.O.M.E (House of Miles East St. Louis). I walked in on JP: What medium do you use in your artwork? a field during my summer employment with my church’s* summer camp. I walked in and could feel Brother Miles’s presence. What brought you toMykael: Right now I am loving acrylic!!!! Acrylic and water-color paint. I or better yet- who/what CONNECTED YOU to the House of Miles East St. usually work with charcoal and graphite. I am learning how to use it and I Louis? love how it makes the skin look when I am painting people of color. I love the texture. * - (Shining Light Missionary Baptist Church) Mykael: My connection with the House of Miles East St. Louis was way before the home was rebuilt. My mom and Ms. Lauren (H.O.M.E. President) and Mr. Gary (H.O.M.E. Vice President) have been knowing me since I was in the womb… lol. They are my “business parents”… JP: Oh wow!!!!! I claim them as well. I guess that makes us siblings… lol… business/art siblings. Mykael: Absolutely, but they have seen me grow as a young black man and as an artist. As you yourself know, once they see something in you, they pour into you all the love and encouragement that they can. They present us with opportunities to be highlighted and seen, not just in this city but around the country. JP: Like you, I plan to be a part of H.O.M.E. even as an adult, but I know you have some other projects going on. What can we be looking forward to from you, Myke?
JP: Do you emotion paint? Lolmbo… I emotion paint. How I am feeling is what I display. Mykael: Right now I am “hungry” to see what is next for me. I am always thirsting for that next big piece (of art) that will put my artwork on the map. That’s what moves me… When I do a portrait of somebody, I am looking for that WOOOOOOWWWWW factor, that tear-jerking reaction. JP: My last question is for me…. Are you interested in teaching art classes if it fits into your schedule? Mykael: That is my ultimate passion. JP: Thank you so much for your time and thank you for sharing your gift with this community and the world. House of Miles East STL 1701 Kansas Avenue East Saint Louis, Illinois (618) 213-8120
Mykael: I am currently trying to get into entertainment. For example, I am (H.O.M.E. offers tours by appointment) looking forward to doing more art shows. I plan to do some poetry shows, jazz shows, hip hop shows to put my own little flavor on the entertainment The interviewer, Jadora Pomerlee, House of Miles East St Louis business. (H.O.M.E.) November 2019 An Interview with Thames Isobel Abbott-Dethrow sat down with members of St. Louis band Thames: Sean, Connor, Noah, Zander, and Gabriel. Isobel: I feel like you guys set yourself apart from the other STL bands that I know of because of your image. I would describe it as a dreamy, floral, incredibly distinct theme. What drove you towards this aesthetic? Zander: I will never forget when I said, “Hey guys, there’s this band called the 1975.” They have a video for their song, “Girls,” where everything is in black and white. When their debut album came out, they got a lot of flack for being a “pop band,” yet they’re not a self-proclaimed pop band. So, they did the video in black and white to make fun of themselves. I wanted to do something like that, and Gabe and Sean both told me, “no”. Then a year later, when Gabe decided to like the 1975, we began to make things more colorful. I guess we all became really good friends and stopped taking those things as seriously as before. We decided to express ourselves more like that because we’re all funny and stupid. Gabe: We hit a point after our third EP where we needed to rebrand ourselves. We felt stuck and thought we were capable of a lot more. We did an overhaul of our image, sound, and got really sincere about our merch and online presence. Up until then, we didn’t know how to do any of that stuff and we had a big band meeting where we listed what we wanted to get done, our aspirations, and goals. It all fell in place. Sean: A lot of it is pretty natural. I don’t think it’s something we put a lot of effort in, defining what the image is. Every time we have some new music out, looking at what our website or photos looks like, they look different. It really feels like a natural progression. Gabe: We know we want a transition, but we aren’t searching for it. It kind of just happens naturally.

Isobel: How did the process of recording and preparing for the release of Spotlight compare to your other releases? Zander: We took our absolute time. Connor: The first one was recorded in a guy’s basement in one or two days. Sean: It was over the course of two weeks, but it was not a ton of time. Connor: The second and third ones, The Fear and Plagues of the 21st Century, we did studio days. Sean: We recorded all of the music for The Fear in one day. With Plagues, we recorded it all in two days. Gabe: It was a hectic, hectic experience. Connor: Doing it that fast is very stressful; it doesn’t allow for a ton of creative freedom. You have to do everything very quickly. I felt that wasn’t what we wanted to do. We did most of Spotlight in Sean’s basement over the course of eight months. That included recording and production, but we did it pretty much by ourselves. Gabe: We did drums and vocals at different studios. Besides that, everything else was ourselves. It was completely different. With the other EPs, we could go in and record, then the producers would send us back We would have our input, but no hands-on work. We’d only have three or four mixes of a song, and that was it. This time, it was nearly a hundred different mixes of songs, because we were super perfectionist. Sean: The reason we hadn’t done that sooner was because I didn’t have enough confidence in my abilities as an engineer. Even doing it this time was scary because I didn’t want to mess it up. Gabe: Sean and I spent a lot of time together in the last nine months in his basement until four in the morning, to the point where one of us would fall asleep. We’d call it a night, then do it again the next day. The coolest thing about this process was the chemistry that was built, unlike before; everything happened with all of us around or hive-mind between Zander, Sean, and me while producing it. Isobel: What has been your favorite show to date? Zander: Tulsa. Our first show we played on tour this summer was in Tulsa. The crowd energy was unmatched by any other show we played locally or on the rest of that tour leg. All of the bands were really supportive of each other, which you don’t find a lot over here. It’s hard to get in with people who support you, because you’re another musician trying to make something of yourself. There were about 150 people there, the bands brought people. Sean: None of them knew us. Gabe: We made a lot of connections from that first show. Noah: More than anything else added up from tour. Gabe: The Off Broadway show in August was really fun. Noah: I think Atomic Cowboy is mine. Gabe: Tulsa and Off Broadway are up there. It was a huge party. It was our first show in St. Louis in two months, after tour. Zander: It felt like a fun homecoming. Isobel: Who are some of your favorite STL bands to watch or perform with?
GessoMagazine.com
November 2019 Zander: Drangus. Gabe: Drangus, of course. Noah: I’m in love with Scott Leeker of the Sigmund Frauds. Gabe: He knows how to control a crowd, I wish I could be as good of a frontman as him. Tonina is another good one to see. Zander: I’ve always wanted to play a show with Foxing ever since high school. Sean: Starwolf is really good, too. They came out of nowhere. They played right before us at the Riverfront Times showcase.
Isobel: What was your favorite moments from your summer tour this year? Had you been on tour before? Gabe: We had played a couple out of town shows here and there, but this was our first official tour. There’re so many good and horrible moments. Noah: Memphis was my favorite moment on tour. We stayed in a hotel and went to the fifth biggest pyramid in the world, Bass Pro Shops. Gabe: I liked the last leg, when we went to Wisconsin. We stayed with Sean’s aunt; we had shows in Madison, Oconomowoc, and Milwaukee. It was really fun because that was the first time where we had some stability. Zander: Most of the shows were us sweating in the car until we got to the venue, where you would sit and wait for two hours until you played. Or, you would be in a hotel room, tired. Gabe: The one night we didn’t play on tour, between Memphis and Cincinnati, we stayed in Nashville with our friend, Rachel, who lives on a horse ranch. It was gorgeous. She had a plethora of beds we could sleep on. Zander: It was the most serene moment. You were in chaos all the time-Noah: Then you were on a horse farm. Gabe: Some of the best moments were getting a break from all the craziness that happened on tour. Sean: Every night, after we finished the show. I would think it would be the end of the night, but somehow, one of you guys would find a way to make us stay up for another four hours. Connor: My favorite moment was the boat in Wisconsin. It was great. Zander: We had a day off and Sean’s aunt lives on a lakefront. We
got to go on the lake and hang out with dogs. Gabe: That trip was special. The last show in Milwaukee was up to par with our first show in Tulsa. It was a poetic ending. We had a great first show, then the rest of the tour was way up and down, testing our souls. Milwaukee gave us a good show with 70-80 people. Isobel: What is your favorite STL venue to play at? Zander: Delmar Hall. Gabe: It’s between Delmar Hall or the Ready Room, undeniably. Noah: Delmar Hall or Atomic Cowboy. The Atomic was very nice and welcoming. The sound is great there. I had enough room to move my keyboard around. Sean: Blueberry Hill does feel like home a little bit. Cicero’s was like that when we first started, then they closed. Every time we come to Blueberry Hill, it’s always the same guy. Gabe: Shouts out to Dan from Blueberry Hill. Isobel: Are there any shows in the future? Gabe: We are going to be in Columbia at Rose Music Hall on November 10. Our album release show at the Ready Room is going to be on November 23, with Drangus, Leponds, and Little Cowboy. Zander: The goal now is to keep playing weekend tour-kinda runs. Gabe: We’re going to do a lot more stuff once the new year hits. Noah: We’re coming down, it’s been a chaotic several months. You are cordially invited to volume number nine! This left column of games will remain the same trusty games with a different setup each month, while the right column will introduce new games monthly. Want to support more games like these? Want next month’s issue before it goes to print?Join our patreon at: Patreon.com/DankByDesign Bring as many eggs to the exit of the dungeon as you can carrying them in your inventory. Each skeleton is worth 1VP when defeated but undefeated costs 1 heart (1VP) when encountered. If you have no hearts you may not cross over a skeleton without a sword. Items are one time use! All items take 1 inventory slot and you must have empty inventory slots to pick them up. Use of any item means it is discarded and items may not be discarded without first using them. Eggs may never be discarded. You may cross a space more than once. Dark spaces require the use of one torch to travel through each time, even if you already traveled through it before. You may not travel diagonally. Start at the S and end at the E. You must finish if your path hits E.
“Asterisk” is for two players. You will use a shared writing utensil and three dice. You will battle for majority control of the board by the game’s end. You take turns claiming one hex’s square at a time on the board. Player one will write“1“s inside squares to claim hexes on the board and player two will write “2”s. Setup: Player one is whoever can freehand the best hexagon on a separate spot of this page. Take turns for who rolls the three dice to prepare for each round. The player who rolled the dice is known as the “active player” each round. Gameplay: You begin on your side of the board in any hex with your number in its square. You take turns filling in one hex at a time, in two ways: with your number and all or a portion of an asterisk that correlates with your choice of the results of the three dice rolled each round. The three dice: Each round, the active player rolls the dice then may pick one of the three dice they have rolled, leaving two dice results to choose from for the other player. The number each die rolled corresponds to patterns of partial or full asterisks (#’s 1- 6). You must choose from the dice results to draw into a hex that is touching a hex you have already drawn your number in that has paths (asterisk patterns) leading out that may be continued onto another hex not already drawn in. When drawing asterisks or parts of them you must draw them exactly as shown for that number, even according to perspective from your side of the board. Adjacent Claiming: If you gain majority control of hexes surrounding an occupied hex then that occupied hex becomes your own if it was not already. You may even lose one of your starting hexes if your opponent can control majority of its adjacent occupied hexes. Some dice results have walls. These walls that you also draw on the edge of a hex mean you may not own or affect the hex on the other side of that wall unless approaching from a different hex that you own. This also means this wall protects the hex you draw it on from the hexes on the other side of the wall.
Sword- Defeats 1 skeleton Torch- Travel through 1 dark space
To win: When neither player may claim a square any longer then the game is over. The player with the most numbers on the board at the end of the game wins!
Key- Unlock 1 chest or 1 door Egg- Score 2VP when brought to E Ice- May not turn on ice unless if stopped by a dark space or edge. Chest- Score 5VP when unlocked Warp- Transports you to any other warp, any time you step onto one. Door- Blocks travel in all directions.
Escaping this room requires you to figure out the password for the door.
