Pianos Are For People: by John Dorroh Evangeline Tubbs, my music teacher at Fairview Elementary School, in Columbus, Mississippi, opened up a new world to me and my classmates. Not that we didn’t have music at home, but it was somewhat limited. A couple of favorite radio stations blared in the kitchen and throughout the house while my sister’s LPs with Frankie Valley and “Hey, Hey Paula” competed for air space. I preferred Question Mark & the Mysterians, the Lemon Pipers, and Dave Clark 5. Miss Tubbs was brilliant. She had a double Master’s in German and music education. Although we laughed and then complained about some of the things she made us do, she was one of the most effective teachers of my life. Her piano skills were unmatched. Occasionally she told us to sit still, close our eyes, and listen to her play parts of arrangements by Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, and others. Miss Tubbs taught me music for three or four years, and I was able to identify any composer whom she had ever played. One day she announced that she would be giving free pianos lessons on Saturday mornings in our school auditorium. Going to school on a Saturday kept most of my classmates from participating, but I went and she helped me work through a couple of the beginners’ books. Unfortunately, I switched over to guitar since my family couldn’t afford a piano for more practice. Since Miss Tubbs’ classes and lessons, I developed a keen appreciation of all kinds of music. I can’t overestimate its positive effects on my life.

it home...

Since December, 2012, Pianos for People (PFP) has been providing free access to music to those who may need it most. Tom and Jeanne Townsend founded this institution in honor of their son, Alex, an artist and musician, who died unexpectedly at the age of 21. The first thing that caught my eye when I visited the facility was a baby grand piano which rests on a small stage in the front room window. That piano is a donation from Graham Nash, of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, who learned about PFP through founder, Tom Townsend. The piano was Graham Nash’s personal piano, and after learning of PFP’s mission, Nash shipped the piano in roadcases stamped with the words ‘Jackson Brown’ as the pair must have shared equipment when touring together.

The front room is accessible from the street and is a group lesson room that accommodates up to eight students. Further back are two private studios where more sophisticated students can hone their skills. There’s also a lower level that serves as a waiting area for parents and a small library. There is no space wasted. It is inviting yet certainly

She has been on the staff of PFP since 2014. The Executive Director is Sheena Duncan, a native Canadian, who moved to St. Louis from Sydney, Australia, in 2013 and started participating with PFP a year later. Duncan has had rich experiences in nonprofit management with expertise in strategic planning, development, event production and financial management. She negotiated several principal partnerships, raising over $20 million in major gifts and bequests, and has an outstanding track record for success in growing organizations. In her adopted Australia and native Canada, she’s held several management positions with leading cultural organizations, including The Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The National Institute of Dramatic Art, the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, Alberta Theatre Projects and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Duncan is an accomplished pianist, having majored in music at the University of Toronto and is a four-time medalist for top marks with the Royal Conservatory of Music, Canada. She moved to St. Louis from Sydney in 2013 and began participating with PFP a year later. The four pillars...some details. One of the main components of Pianos for People is the distribution of free pianos. This is timely since many school budget cuts significantly reduced or eliminated funding for the arts, including music education. Practicing the piano takes time, discipline, and patience. Unfortunately, 8

it’s widely been replaced with social media and games, which distracts from the creative arts.

Pianos can be agents of change in a person’s life, opening doors to emotional and intellectual growth. Research repeatedly shows that playing a musical instrument can and does improve verbal memory, literacy, visual-spatial processing, and the understanding of mathematics. Furthermore, it has been shown to raise the IQ. PFP has given away over 250 free, highquality pianos. They find pianos, refurbish them in the “Piannex,” and then distribute an average of

In the span of two years, Martin taught himself as much as he could about playing the piano but had to leave his home to practice elsewhere. When he received a piano, he also took advantage of the PFP free lessons program. After studying with Seibert and co-founder / board member, Pat Eastman, Royce earned an internship with Grammy Award winning, St. Louis based jazz pianist, Peter Martin. Because of the support of PFP, the Fox-Family Foundation, and other students, he now attends his dream school, Berklee College of Music in Boston. PFP presently has over 130 students at its flagship studios on Cherokee Street in the Cherokee Arts District of St. Louis, and at least 60 additional students in the Ferguson (MO) satellite location. Free lessons serve as a vehicle for creativity, exploration, and the nurturing of students’ self-esteems. They offer private and group lessons at both locations, including Music Production Workshop teaching students to use Garage Band, improvisation, theory workshops, and master-classes for the more sophisticated learners. The age range of students is from pre-school to senior adults. A third component which makes PFP such an unusually successful program is the coordination of community events. Throughout the year PFP brings people together from the neighborhood and beyond for happenings that emphasize collaboration and performance. Included are Super Theory Saturdays that reinforce what students have learned during the week. Piano Slams, which occur quarterly, introduce people of all

ages to different styles of music, and provide the opportunity to play with a live blues band, led by founder, Tom Townsend, and an accomplished blues pianist in his own right.

They also host formal recitals and an annual adjudicated Music Festival.

January 2019 If all of that were not enough, there are free summer camps that occur over a six-week period. These day camps provide a safe place for students to go while their parents are at work. Ensuring that youth are involved in positive activities is a high priority of PFP. There are offerings in Beginner Camps, Enrichment Camps, Turn Up Your Talent Multi-Disciplinary Camp, and a Digital Music Composition and Production Camp. Awards and Accolades... The many awards and special recognitions that Pianos for People has received include the 2017 St. Louis Arts Awards (Arts Innovator of the Year from the Arts & Education Council), national coverage on PEOPLE.COM, and on NBC’s Sunday Today (see weblink below). Their branding through advertising agency Rodgers Townsend (founder Tom Townsend’s former advertising firm) earned them numerous awards from the St. Louis Advertising Foundation (for Pianos for People branding), and they received the 2013 Monsanto Grow St. Louis Award. They have been recognized by the Riverfront Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis Parent Magazine, and the Ladue News. Emerson awarded PFP $10,000 which is the equivalent of securing, refurbishing, and placing 14 high-quality pianos. I could go on. In closing... Its track record is unparalleled. In six short years, PFP has grown exponentially to the point where they are virtually busting out at its seams. The hundreds of students who have associated themselves with PFP speak highly of it and admit that without its services, much talent would be lost or wasted. 10

Here’s what a few people have said about the sense of community, quality of instruction, and long-term impact of the program. “Pianos for People has created a joyful and exciting learning environment. The result –motivated students, enthusiastic about music instruction and activitie...” “An exceptional quality of instruction... where students are encouraged to learn, but not pushed so hard that they are turned of...” “Pianos for People’s creative special events, emphasis on parent involvement and inviting spirit of inclusion has created a strong sense of community among families in the program...” “Pianos for People is about much more than music education. It is about personal growth and character development, including confidencebuilding, self-discipline and sense of pride...” Thinking back to my experiences with Miss Tubbs in elementary school, I understand the power of having one person interested in what you’re doing. What Pianos for People offers is an entire staff of highly skilled individuals, each with his/her own gifts, who care about music and provide rich piano experiences for anyone who walks through their doors. If I had had a Pianos for People in my life, perhaps I, too, might have become a virtuoso.

Fun Sells by Dan Cross How many views do you have on your YouTube channel? Hundreds? Thousands? What if I told you that three guys from Belleville have helped a local business get over four BILLION views? That’s no typo: four billion views, as in half the population of planet Earth. 4,640,792,375 to be exact. How did Vat19, a local toy and novelty gift wholesaler, end up with more views than ABC News, Comedy Central, and Justin Timberlake’s VEVO channel? Credit goes to the brilliant minds and hilarious antics of their marketing team, which includes three childhood friends from Belleville, Jon Stamm, Danny Gula, and Joey Graves.

some gifts” for sale on Vat19.com, but instead of making run-of-the-mill product videos, they push the envelope further. WAY further. For example, to promote a product called Liquid Glass Thinking Putty, which is a sort of crystal clear oobleck that is sold in little tins of 1/5 pound each, they got five hundred POUNDS of the stuff, poured it in a bathtub, and then made Joey (“the cute one” as Jon and Danny describe him) lay in it to see what happened. He slowly sank and got very stuck—and the YouTube video of it received 64 Million views. To promote Orbeez Spitballs (little tapiocasized beads that swell up to the size of marbles when immersed in water), the Vat19 team filled a pool with ten million spitballs—and then dove into it and tried to swim. That video has 23 million views. The promotions vary with the products, but one of their most frequent (and most entertaining) techniques is masochistically subjecting themselves to all sorts of hilarious abuses in the name of product promotion. They eat lollipops made with Carolina Reaper peppers (the hottest on earth). They drink their own pee through an ingenious portable water filter called the Lifestraw. They have huge battles with chalk bombs that leave everyone looking like survivors “When we were kids, we’d just make silly of a Hindu Holi ceremony. videos together for fun, so it’s like we never Another stroke of marketing genius the stopped doing that,” Gula explained. boys came up with is making original music vid Lots of people claim to have fun at work, but eos about the products they are selling, complete believe me, you don’t have fun like these guys do. with amazing catchy melodies they write themTheir main job is promoting the “curiously aweselves. January 2019 when they were in high school and they were assigned a written paper about Julius Caesar, they decided to write a song instead, and the resulting video was a huge hit, even with their teacher. “I don’t remember anything about that play, but I still remember the lines in our song. I realized then that music was really an effective teaching tool.” This was the same strategy Jon Stamm used to take Vat19’s YouTube channel from ordinary to unbelievable. “I asked my boss if, instead of making a typical video for the product, we could do a music video instead. It turned out to be really popular, so we kept doing it.” For good reason: the music videos are among the most popular videos on the channel. Check out the one they did for the 26 Pound Gummy Bear for example—28 million people already have. It’s not like these guys are just marketing geniuses pretending to be musicians—they really are musicians, and were long before Vat 19. Jon, Danny, Joey (and Joey’s cousin Jeff, who still helps in the studio part time) formed a band called For the Moment when they were still in middle school. The band was eventually renamed Redding, and the four boys never stopped hanging out together. Jon, Joey, and Danny all studied music together at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, and stayed together while earning degrees in Media Production at Greenville College. I remember watching Redding play at the Ground Floor in Belleville, back when the venue was an all-ages coffee shop. It was like seeing N Sync in concert—not because of the music, but because of the fans. They always drew a huge crowd—mostly teenage girls, who would crowd the dance floor swooning at the boys in the band. Though they refer to Joey as “the cute one,” the

are all impossibly cute and still boyish, even though they have now moved into their 30s, into parenthood, and successful careers. Growing out of their long friendship, their band, and their success at Vat 19 is Redding Creative, their own media production company now based in Belleville. On a recent night (after their day-jobs at Vat 19), I met up with them in their studio on the fourth floor of a former bank building. It is a small space, just two rooms, but cleverly designed to provide several different sets and shooting backgrounds. The studio was outfitted with sharp, state of the art video equipment like an automated slider dolly, color changing LED lights, and high-end studio microphones. But it wasn’t always like that. Jon explained how they got started.

“Someone we know offered us the space for free, so we just started cold calling companies and offering our services. We told them we had a studio, but we actually didn’t have anything but DSLRs and some cheap softboxes, so when we finally got some offers, we said we need half the payment up front, and that’s how we got all this stuff.” Then, as if worried how that might sound-

January 2019 he went on. “It wasn’t a lie, exactly. We knew we would give them a good video. We just didn’t tell them what we had when we started.” The videos were good, and the clients were happy. “That contract paid for all this, and is still keeping the lights on.” Now that they have their own space and their own brand, they are beginning to branch out into other kinds of services: Making high quality vlogs and web series, like their weekly entertainment talk show, Randomonium. Giving speaking engagements about their success. And encouraging others in the community to join them. “I see three pillars to our business,” Stamm explained. “Client work, like the videos we made for Mattel and Brookstone, our own original content, like Randomonium, and creator development. We want to host meetups for other content creators in the area. People always talk about wanting to move to California to work in the industry, but I always tell them that they don’t have to move. There are so many advantages to working here, not the least of which is how affordable it is.” I hung around and watched the boys shoot an episode of Randomonium, which, as the name suggests, focuses on many different random topics. This week’s topic: Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie? The episode began with both boys screaming. “Die Hard IS a Christmas Movie!” “Die Hard is NOT a Christmas Movie!” But then it moved quickly into a humorous and surprisingly erudite debate about what elements a movie must have to be considered part of the Christmas movie genre. With almost no advanced preparation (other than the fact that Jon and Danny have been having this actual argument for years) their delivery on air was unbelievably 26

articulate, funny, you might even say polished.

One of the most astonishing things about Randomonium (and Vat 19’s) online success is that it happened without one iota of that staple of advertising: sex. Look at all the videos on Vat 19 and you won’t see a single obligatory cleavage shot. In fact, even though the sites have a fair amount of juvenile, Jackass-style stunts (blowing stuff up, attaching a piñata to a drone and smashing it with a baseball bat, eating real worms to compare them to gummy worms), nevertheless, there is something clean, even wholesome about their work. “Yeah. That’s really important to us,” Danny explains. “We hear from parents all the time who tell us, I see my kids watching YouTube and I worry about them, but then I see that they are watching Vat 19, and I relax because I know they won’t see anything they shouldn’t see.” If you think that this is due to mellowing with age, you would be wrong. Even in middle school and the early days of their band, there has always been something wholesome about these guys. It may come as no surprise that they are all devoted family men, practicing Christians, and most of the music they make these

A BALANCED LIFE by Kathy Sax

The word ‘balance’ is defined as: an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady. When thinking about the circumstances and events in life, we all strive for the balance in life between making money to live, supporting ourselves and our families, and maintaining a healthy life complete with all the things that make us happy like hobbies, sports, travel, and such. It can be very difficult to maintain that delicate balance - too much either way can easily tilt the scale. Marshall M, owner of Balance Coffee and Tea, has found a way for balance in his life. Marshall grew up in Columbia, Illinois and attended school there and in Belleville. After graduating from high school, he took a job with the railroad while working part time as a fishing guide. An opportunity with AMTRAK led to a job offer in Seattle, which he accepted - moving his young family 2,000 miles away to start a new adventure.

While Seattle offered him many of the interests that he enjoyed, such as mountain biking and skate boarding and yoga, the job with AMTRAK didn’t allow for the flexibility to balance his scale (providing for his family and pursuing his interests). Marshall left the railroad and took a job as a courier - riding his bike through the streets of Seattle. Most of his break time during business hours was spent at a coffee shop called Café Ladro. It was there where Marshall met and became friends with the owner and employees. The delivery business took a turn and Marshall was left looking for another job. As luck would have it, Café Lardo had a full time opening and he was offered a job. He thought, ‘why not?’ - he knew and liked the people there. He took the job thinking that he would be trained to work as a barista, maybe a coffee educator. The experience provided so much more than that… Marshall enjoyed learning about the roasting process and the business end of the establishment. He started seeing the potential of the coffee business and the possibility of owning his own business down the road. That way he could help others by offering employment, provide for his children’s future, and have some flexibility to maintain that healthy work/life balance. Marshall returned to Belleville to do just that in the fall of 2015. Serendipitously, the old train station building that used to house the Green Depot came up for rent that summer as he was looking for places that might be ideal. Drawn to the large door and storage area which was originally the old baggage room, he

January 2019 saw it as a perfect fit for his new adventure. Balance Coffee and Tea opened on February 20th, 2017. Marshall roasts his own beans using a DIEDRICH IR 12 ROASTER, which was handmade and shipped from Ponderay, Idaho. It can roast 12 kilos at a time and each batch takes approximately 13-15 minutes, depending on the roast profile and level. The roaster utilizes conduction as well as conventional heating, using natural gas and infrared burners. His five-year goals include buying the property and expanding the warehouse and roastery on the back lot. Balance Coffee and Tea is located at 732 South Illinois Street in Belleville (IL). It is a warm inviting space complete with large comfy couches and window seating. The décor is charming and features local artwork as well as pictures depicting the history of the building. They offer a full menu of hot and cold coffee / tea beverages along with sandwiches, soups, pastries/muffins including some vegan and gluten free options. For those desiring an alcohol beverage, there are coffee-infused drinks, several classic cocktails such as lemon drop martini and a rotating beer on tap from the White Rooster Farmhouse Brewery, located in Sparta, Illinois. On the weekends, a Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar is available from 8am-2pm. Personally, I have been to Balance Coffee and Tea several times and I love it. The ‘Belleville Blend’ coffee is some of the best coffee I have ever tasted, and the environment provides a perfect atmosphere for one to find the balance that is needed in our lives. I invite all to support this wonderful local business and enjoy an amazing experience.

January 2019

In The Beginning… Straight Up Magazine had its humble beginnings in a small apartment in Belleville, Illinois. From there, in the spring of 2006, a small group of “twenty-something” friends set their life-long dream to paper, via a lap-top computer. That dream: a monthly magazine to serve the artistic wants and needs of the St. Louis Metro Area. And that magazine was Str8Up.

Thank you for picking up Gesso Magazine. Enjoy the black and white look, the tactile feel of real print media. And be sure to join us online for daily updates and insights into the world of art, music and culture that is the St. Louis Metro Area Scene. gessomagazine.com facebook.com/gessomagazine

In print and on-line, Str8Up Magazine began “Serving Up Art, Music, and Culture for the Metro East’s Enjoyment”. The #1 June 2006 issue boasted 28 pages, with a run of 5,000 copies and 40 distribution locations. By issue #41, the free monthly ran 10,000 copies in over 400 distribution locations on both sides of the river. Straight Up Magazine has given a voice and a platform for local and regional artists, performers, venues, and businesses that support live music and the arts to be heard here and (via internet and social media) around the world. And now, Straight Up Magazine has joined forces with a pair of artists (former cover artist, Jake Bishop and Robert Corey) to become Gesso Magazine. Though the name has changed, the mission remains the same. This issue #42 is the proud successor to Str8Up and in it can be found the same high-quality feature articles, image displays of works of some of the best regional artists, poetry and prose, submitted artworks from regional artists - of all ages - and (of course) the extensive calendar of upcoming art, music and cultural events.

Timothy E. Wagner “My current emphasis in mixed media coincide a specific visual language that defines subject matter and content. In this series of work animals represent the human soul and spirituality. They all carry a symbolic meaning and appear in myths, legends and many religions. The creative process of the work is based on repurposing materials, having the image superimposed by using photo transfers then adding form, atmospheric space and color theory. The resulting product is a culmination of my thought process as it is created. John Dorroh “Upon Changes” The cats are doing their bizness in hi-tech, minimal-carbon footprint coconut, shredded so fine that it floats in the air. The biodegradable bag in which it is shipped pulls more weight than the litter. Cats are supposed to be picky. Change their food and you might find evidence of malcontent. Like people. Force them to swap cash for plastic cards and they lose control, like leaky bladders. Change makes me question motives some times. But at least I am no longer looking for a phone booth when I need to call my supervisor to tell her that I won’t be coming in until after 10.
