WELCOME TO THE

GESU GALA 2021

THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2021 A rich history. A dedicated staff. An inspired mission.

The Hamilton Family is proud to have supported Gesu School for the past 20 years. We hope to be partners for many more! Gesu’s students, teachers, staff, and administration serve as bright lights in North Philadelphia.

We are honored to receive the 2021 Spirit Medal and congratulate Stephen and Cheri Ziegler as fellow recipients.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust

S. Matthews V. Hamilton, Jr., Board Chairman

DEAR FRIENDS, Thank you for joining us and for supporting the 2021 Gesu Gala. I hope you and your loved ones are well. This year has challenged us in myriad ways, but it has also strengthened our community and harnessed our hope and faith. We gather tonight to acknowledge these blessings and to celebrate our Gesu community: students and families, teachers and staff, and volunteers and friends. We are delighted to honor our 2021 Spirit Medalists, The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust and Stephen & Cheri Ziegler, for their dedication and generosity. We recognize Gesu Lead Counselor Jonathan Jackson ’99, recipient of the James F. Higgins ’45 Distinguished Alumni Award, for his leadership and care. The gala raises funds that are critical to fulfilling Gesu’s mission — providing an innovative education that enables students to transcend all forms of poverty. Now, more than ever, our 450 students are experiencing the deep-rooted challenges that accompany poverty and systemic racial injustice. This year, the gala offers an online auction, including educational impact opportunities and a student art auction. Your support helps Gesu plan for our future while continuing to deliver a safe, cutting-edge learning environment for our in-person and remote students. You will witness these efforts in tonight’s video event. We thank our 2021 Gala Co-Chairs, John & Jennifer Curry and Dr. Larry Wells & Dr. Bernadette Wheeler, for their commitment to Gesu and this event. And Gesu appreciates your investment in our students’ holistic education, especially during this time. Enjoy this tribute program! Please click through to experience Gesu from your own home. With gratitude,

Bryan Carter | President and CEO

THE GESU STORY Gesu School was founded in 1873 as a parochial school. In June 1993, it was in jeopardy of closing, but opened three months later as an independent, Catholic school governed by an ecumenical board of trustees. Gesu blazed the trail for what a thriving inner-city school looks like and what our students can accomplish. Over 25 years later, thousands of children have received a quality education, and schools nationwide have adopted Gesu’s model. Aligned with the Jesuit belief in cura personalis, “care of the whole person,” Gesu provides a holistic education, nurturing students academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. In the spirit of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Gesu affirms that “every child can learn.” We welcome children of all ability levels, faiths, and ethnicities. Thanks to generous supporters like you, Gesu offers targeted resources and ensures that students reach their highest potential. Gesu delivers remedial to advanced academics, counseling and wellness support, and a soft skills curriculum to develop character traits like grit and motivation. These learning strategies help define the “Gesu Difference.” The majority of Gesu families struggle financially. Approximately one out of three Gesu families has an annual household income of less than $30,000. Despite the challenges our children face, they succeed. In a city where approximately 69% of public high school students graduate from high school in four years, 90% of Gesu alumni graduate high school on time, and of those graduates, 86% go on to college or post-secondary education.

The 2021 Gesu Gala is dedicated to the memory of Christopher C. Fallon, Jr.

Since 1992, the Hamilton family has been committed to improving educational opportunities for children and youth, a mission originally established by Dorrance (Dodo) Hamilton and Samuel M.V. Hamilton, parents and grandparents of the family Trustees, and their three children. Mrs. Hamilton believed that equality in education was one of the most important social issues of her time and that a strong education system was essential to developing a thriving economy and a higher quality of living for Philadelphia citizens. She felt that Gesu School exemplified the importance of providing a strong foundation of educational excellence and engagement in the early years of all children’s development. She particularly admired the school’s commitment to justice and service and its philosophy of addressing the individual needs of each student. Mrs. Hamilton’s legacy of philanthropy in the Philadelphia region continues with The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust, which includes two generations of the Hamilton family. Twelve family members meet regularly to support non-profits that offer effective and equitable educational opportunities for students in grades K-12. The organization believes that our citizens’ ability to compete in a global

economy depends upon today’s students having universal access to quality literacy-based and STEM programs that result in readiness for college success and the development of relevant job skills. The Trust salutes the high-quality educational experiences and unconditional support that Gesu School offers to students of all faiths and talents. From the outstanding leadership of President and CEO Bryan Carter and Principal Sister Ellen Convey, IHM, to the dedication of the school’s superior teachers and staff, to the loving and concerned parents and guardians, to the 450 unique and resilient students, the Hamilton family has proudly supported Gesu School by contributing nearly $1.3 million over the last 20 years. Accepting the Spirit Medal on behalf of The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust is Board Chairman, S. Matthews V. Hamilton, Jr. Matt and his wife, Anne, provide ongoing support for many educational and arts institutions and programs, particularly those that serve underserved children and families. Most recently, Matt served in board leadership roles at the Franklin Institute and the Zoological Society of Philadelphia. He was President of Travel Services Inc.

STEPHEN & CHERI ZIEGLER

HONOREES

Stephen and Cheri Ziegler originally hail from Bucks County and currently reside in Sarasota, Florida. Their passion for philanthropy spans 20 years and has touched countless lives. The Zieglers’ joy for family and giving is reflected in their commitment to transforming communities, particularly through education. They established The Z Foundation to impact organizations ranging from hospitals to Veterans associations and food banks.

The Zieglers’ connection with Gesu began through an introduction by a friend. After they sponsored their first student via the Sponsor a Child program, their dedication to our community blossomed. Over the past decade, the family has created their Gesu legacy of giving by sponsoring five additional students. Their genuine love for Gesu students inspired them to help launch our One Day Challenge in 2015. For seven years, their gifts have spearheaded this essential fundraising effort, raising more than $430,000 and yielding exponential growth for Gesu’s annual fund. This generosity directly addresses Gesu’s infrastructure and most pressing needs, from maintaining our building to paying teacher salaries. Gesu School is proud to honor the Zieglers’ impact and dedication to our school’s mission with the 2021 Spirit Medal. Watch the 2021 Gesu Gala video to learn more about our honorees.

The Gesu Difference is...

JAMES F. HIGGINS ’45 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD To recognize alumni achievements, Gesu created the James F. Higgins ’45 Distinguished Alumni Award, named for beloved alumnus, 2017 Spirit Medalist, and Trustee James F. Higgins. We look forward to honoring many alumni who embody Jim’s legacy through their success, heart, Gesu pride, and dedication.

JONATHAN JACKSON ’99 Bachelor's in Labor Industrial Relations, Penn State University Master's degree in Counseling Psychology with concentration in Trauma, Rosemont College

We are proud to honor Jonathan Jackson ‘99, Gesu Lead Counselor, alumnus, and Gesu parent. As students and families faced unprecedented challenges this year, the support that Gesu counselors provided has been critical. During the pandemic, Gesu families have been coping not only with quarantine, but also with loss, illness, unemployment, financial uncertainty, and other trauma. As a Gesu alumnus, Mr. Jackson forges deep personal connections with parents, students, and staff. He directly addresses community issues that can affect families, from poverty to systemic racism. Mr. Jackson is a true hero who has expanded Gesu’s counseling program. He embodies excellence in leadership and advocacy. Mr. Jackson is the epitome of the “Gesu Difference.” Watch the 2021 Gesu Gala video to learn more about Jonathan’s contributions to Gesu School.

GIVE THE GIFT OF A CHILD’S EDUCATION AND RECEIVE UP TO 90% IN TAX CREDITS! Pennsylvania allows qualified individuals and businesses to receive tax credits (yes, tax credits, not deductions) for contributions of scholarship aid through the Educational Improvement and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Programs (EITC & OSTC). Gesu School relies on EITC and OSTC donations from businesses across the region to help us continue our mission to serve lowincome children and families in North Philadelphia. You can help! The impact is enormous.

For several years, Chubb has supported Gesu School through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit program. Chubb is dedicated to supporting the communities where our employees live and work. Therefore, we are proud to provide funding which helps vulnerable youth in North Philadelphia and their families, enabling local students to receive a quality education. Gesu School demonstrates strong leadership in the community through empowering students to reach their full potential."

The Gesu Difference is...

…shifting norms and creating an environment that is unlike any other. Affording opportunities that can’t be found anywhere else. Gesu not only adapts to change, but believes in change.” Rakirah Fisher, 6th Grade Girls Teacher & 2011 Gesu Alumna

Throughout the trials and tribulations of the COVID-19 pandemic, our teachers have gone to extraordinary lengths to help students continue to learn and grow. Our teachers really are amazing, and their hard work and dedication deserve to be acknowledged this year more than ever. Thank you, Gesu Teachers. You are the difference.

IMPACT A CHILD’S LIFE. BECOME A SPONSOR. Did you know you have the power to help students develop their strengths and succeed? Our Sponsor a Child program enables Gesu to accomplish our mission and inspires children to transcend poverty through holistic education. A tax-deductible contribution not only supports a child’s education, but also opens doors to innovative learning and critical life skills.

HOW IT WORKS: • You, or a group of friends, make an annual gift of $7,000 to cover roughly three-quarters of the annual cost of one Gesu child's education. •

Gesu typically provides four annual activities for you to meet with your sponsored child. Gesu will resume gatherings when public health guidelines permit. Gesu will also provide opportunities to connect remotely.

• Sponsors will receive student updates and letters regularly throughout the school year. • Sponsors are not obligated to meet or interact with your sponsored child if you prefer to watch him or her grow from a distance or anonymously. • Gifts to the Sponsor a Child program are unrestricted gifts.

17

WHY SPONSOR? • Maximize your impact and develop a meaningful connection with a determined child. • Support a Gesu education that emphasizes academic excellence, character formation, religious faith, and leadership. • Help students access life-changing education and reach their fullest potential. • When you choose to sponsor a student at Gesu, you can change a child’s life.

For more information, contact the Gesu Development Office at 215-763-9077 or development@gesuschool.org.
