WA R M DRINKS ON A CO O L DAY By Paul Andrew
COZY UP WITH A TOAST Y L I B AT I O N AT T H E S E L O C A L FAV O R I T E S .
Last run of the day! The afternoon shadows ominously cover much of the steep, bumpy slope! Most of the skiers and boarders are already in the lodge. “Straight down!” you tell yourself “No stopping until the bottom!” You take a deep breath of the cool, crisp air. Down you fly, cold wind in your face, trees you pass just a blur as you race toward the bottom. Out of breath, but completely exhilarated from your perfect day on the slopes! There is no better reward for your day of outdoor winter activity, whatever it may be, than warming the body and soul with a warm cocktail. Whether a warm, mulled wine, spiced cider drink, or other soothing treat, your apres ski day is best topped off with one of the many warm drink options available in the Reno/Tahoe area. Many of our local establishments have adapted to the desire for warm cocktails with a creative variety of hot drinks, with customized flavors and tastes to meet even the most particular consumer tastes. A popular stop for a winter drink and fun atmosphere is Lake Tahoe Aleworx, with locations at the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe, and in the casino corridor between Harrahs and MontBleu. Best known for their craft beer, they also provide tasty hot drinks during the chilled winter months. laketahoealeworx.com “Our Kentucky coco, with Nooku bourbon cream, Irish cream, hot chocolate, topped with our homemade whipped cream, is one of our favorites,” says Mickayla Segers, manager at Lake Tahoe Aleworx. “Another popular drink is the hot apple pie, with Tahoe Blue Vodka, Tuaca, apple cider and a cinnamon stick.” Just next door to Lake Tahoe Aleworx at the “Y” is their Tahoe Cocktail Corner, whose warm specialty is the espresso Tahoe style, with Tahoe Blue Vodka, Kahlua, Baileys, Frangelica, a shot of espresso, whipped cream and chocolate shavings. tahoecocktailcorner.com Fox and Hound, on Tramway Drive near the Nevada Heavenly Lodges serves a beverage called all warm and fuzzy. “It includes Kahlua, Carolans, Grand Marnier, butterscotch and coffee, topped with whipped cream,” reports Matt Grimes of Fox and Hound. foxandhoundtahoe.com

Basecamp Pizza Co., in the Heavenly Village Center, provides gourmet pizza, which can be combined with the warmth of steaming beverage. Six-year veteran bar manager Rob Smith describes the bar’s hot apple Jerry. “We infuse Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, mixed with fresh apples, in conjunction with apple pie moonshine, a cinnamon stick, then topped with orange peel.” basecamppizzaco.com If you want to enjoy a hot mulled wine in the comfort of your home, room or condo, visit The Cork & More for provisions. Celebrating their fortieth year, this Napa-style market and deli in South Lake has what you need. Vin Glogg, sold by the bottle, is the ultimate winter warmer, combining red wine, port, with blended spices of cinnamon, cardamom and orange peel.

Lake Tahoe has often been called the “American Alps.” When temperatures dip, much like the Swiss, Tahoe locals and visitors seek out sustenance that warms the body from the inside out while tickling the taste buds delightfully. Gastronomically speaking, almost nothing seems more Swiss than letting tasty edible tidbits swim in steaming, melted cheese or chocolate. Fiending for some fondue now? Let us allure you with these menu items inspired by the Swiss but offered regionally.
IDLE AWAY YOUR TIME At the Idle Hour in South Lake Tahoe, gaze at the cerulean lake and surrounding pines over an enticing pot of fondue for two. Toasty French bread and fruit can be dipped into luscious, melted cheese while tasting several of their complementary artisan wines. idlehourlaketahoe.com

Down the hill in Reno, find flavorful fondue kits made to order at The Flavor Studio. Fine Alpine cheeses curated with the help of the region’s “Queen Brie” Laura Conrow are blended to melting perfection. All ingredients — including another other key addition, Kirsch — are packaged with cooking instructions, cornichons and a French baguette. Other dippable selections can be added on, such as sliced Jamon Iberico, steamed cauliflower, baby potatoes, apples, shrimp, meatballs and more. The Flavor Studio team has also selected several wines that pair impeccably with the fondue to take home for an additional cost. theflavorstudio.com
MELTY GOODNESS Take a seat at Liberty Food and Wine Exchange in Downtown Reno, order one of their craft cocktails, beers or a glass of wine, and dip brioche pretzel
twists and apples into a hearty pot of molten gruyere cheese blended with white wine. Guests can also have fun experimenting with dipping some of Liberty’s other mouthwatering small plate items into the cheesy goodness too. Charcuterie dipped in gruyere? Yes please! libertyfoodandwine.com Cheese is glorious when melted … but so is chocolate. Visit Dorinda’s Chocolates for exquisite dark, milk or white chocolate callets, aka chips, ideal for melting into chocolate fondue. Purchase Dorinda’s decadent, globally acclaimed Valrhona chocolate in quarterpound increments to melt down into dessert — or heck, perhaps even breakfast — then decide what you think will be fabulous dripping in world-renowned chocolate. Having a party? Call ahead and order the callets in bulk. dorindaschocolates.com
FINE DINING FOCUS On Tahoe’s West Shore, a staple of fine cuisine has stood fast since 1920. delicious Grand Marnier souffle and a visit to their new outdoor vodka garden. swisslakewood.com In Incline Village, La Fondue has specialized in the liquified Swiss delicacy for decades. The woodladen interior and decor makes guests feel as if they walked into a ski lodge in the Swiss Alps. Fondues ranging from oil or broth hot pots to cook meat in, to idyllically blended cheeses ready for dipping, with silky liquid chocolate and an array of fruits, cake and marshmallows to cap off the meal. Sauces to dip meats into post-oil bath are also available, like their apple curry chutney or delicious aiolis. Other lighter items are on the menu to balance the scrumptiously hearty meal. This is one place where you can get your fondue on for every course. la-fondue.business.site. If you’re anything like me when you travel, you want to find the local spots. And visit new restaurants that have caught the local eye and fork. My husband and I moved away from Reno eight years ago. We currently live in Spring Creek, Nevada, a rural town, with views of the Ruby Mountains. Luckily, we live close enough we are able to spend time in Tahoe and visit the in-laws in Reno almost monthly. I’m not quite a Reno local, not quite a tourist. I’m a localist or a tourical if you will. I have my favorite haunts but always make time for new restaurants when we go. Reno is truly one of my favorite cities for the food scene. There is an explosion of innovation with a high priority on sourcing local ingredients. The restaurants here focus on the Great Basin and all the many flavors and history it brings with it. Liberty Food and Wine Exchange’s menu evolves weekly, showcasing hand foraged and local ingredients of the season. It’s a casual dining experience centered on sharing plates, stories and a good time. libertyfoodandwine.com Focused on small-batch artisanal cocktails, Seven Troughs Speakeasy started as a local distillery in Sparks. They have since opened the speakeasy in The Basement under West Elm on Virginia St. They serve small bites, brunch and my personal favorite, a black cherry Manhattan. 7troughsdistilling.com; thebasementreno.com While not new, Great Basin Brewing Company is my gold standard for brewpubs. With two locations, they have a breadth of beers, and can claim the title of Nevada’s most award-winning brewery. The eclectic menu has something for everyone from fresh Atlantic salmon to their famous 50/50 burger. I’m eagerly awaiting my chance at their seasonal Tom Hate’s Pumpkin Ale. greatbasinbrewingco.com What better way to celebrate the season then with a Christmas blend coffee from Hub Coffee Roasters. A true community driven business, Hub coffee has three Reno locations to energize your cold weather days. hubcoffeeroasters.com
Higher Elevation Flavor Not to be out done, Tahoe has a bevy of inventive restaurants. One of the new kids on the block, Thirdman Taphouse and Gourmet Deli in South Lake, centers on quality smoked meats and fresh, from scratch bread. They offer quick bites so you don’t miss time on the slopes. thirdmantaphouse.com When we’re in the mood for yeasty brick oven pizzas or my husband’s favorite tri-tip hero sandwich, we head to Tahoe Tavern and Grill, in Stateline. This casual dining spot is quickly earning a reputation for its elevated American fare. tahoetavernandgrill.com Also in Stateline, Clydes Coffee Roasting Company, sells boutique coffee with a side of delicious pastry. Get there early to try a ham and cheese croissant and a cup of cowboy coffee. clydescoffee.com Tunnel Creek Café, in Incline Village, is a perfect first stop before exploring the East Shore Path. Their traditional breakfast and lunch menu is tasty fuel to get you started. tunnelcreekcafe.com While my time is typically split between Reno and Tahoe, I will give an honorable mention to Bank Saloon, in Carson City. When we want a guaranteed great date night, we drop the kiddos with the in-laws, and head south on the I-580. This upscale cocktail bar is housed in a historic building in the capitol of Nevada. The handcrafted drinks are made with house syrups, and when possible, local ingredients. banksaloonnv.com Traveling back to my home away, I’m amazed and delighted at the plethora of new eateries to try. Whether I’m in the mood for a robust meal bursting with local flavor or an expertly crafted cocktail, I can always find something to get my taste buds singing.

CATCH A LIVE SHOW IN THE SIERRA
COME IN & ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE Specializing in artistry styles
By Alexis Scatena
For performers and theatre patrons alike, the return of live shows brought a sense of relief and excitement. If I made a dollar each time I heard a stranger say, “Gosh, it is so nice to have live music and theatre back,” I would be a millionaire. After a year and a half of closed curtains and blackedout stages, theatres and venues across the community are finally turning their spotlights back on. According to Americans for the Arts, the performing arts industry in the state of Nevada suffered an estimated financial loss of $15.8 million. While some beloved Northern Nevada venues locked their doors for good, others survived and reopened with a confident smile and warm welcome.

WE CERTAINLY BELIEVE IN THIS COMMUNITY AND WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF THE PERFORMING ARTS.
DENNYSE SEWELL
Executive Director | Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts “We certainly believe in this community and we believe in the power of the performing arts,” says Dennyse Sewell, executive director of the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. “We knew [theatre] was going to come back. Our decision was to reopen in a small, cautious, careful way or take the opportunity to go all in to do something we’ve never done and open our arms as wide as possible to invite everyone back. We chose the latter and I’m glad we did.” In June, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts announced its stellar comeback with the Broadway Comes to Reno 2021-2022 season featuring the Reno premiere of Hamilton as well as Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar, CATS, and Hadestown. Aside from hosting nationwide touring shows, the Pioneer Center is home to the Reno Philharmonic, A.V.A Ballet Theatre, and Artown. Check pioneercenter.com for COVID-19 guidelines and show listings. In South Reno, aspiring young dancers and actors can train at Loft Dance Theater Arts to one day be on the big stage. The organization is dedicated to bringing the dancer and performer out in everyone. Now through June 2022, students aged 5 to 17 can take an array of classes, including ballet, jazz, tap, modern, theater expression, and more. Due to COVID-19, LDTA evaluates and assesses the in-person class options each month and may implement Zoom lessons, if needed. loftdancearts.com Aside from musicals and dance productions, music fans are ecstatic to see their favorite music artists returning to cities on tour. Right here in the “Jewel of the Sierra,” the MontBleu Resort, Casino and Spa will host rock artists The Dead South and George Thorogood & The Destroyers for their rescheduled show dates in late winter and spring. Visitors can stay up to date with new show listings, as well as the venue’s recent COVID-19 guidelines by visiting its website. montbleuresort.com If the pandemic taught me one thing, it is this: You never know when the last curtain call will take place. Take advantage of your favorite touring musicians and plays debuting at local theatres and music venues, and experience what makes the Reno/Tahoe performing arts community shine so bright.

Warm-to-cold outdoor activities. By Natasha Bourlin
Experiences outside are around every corner in the High Sierra. When the weather turns from warm to cold, often in the same day (sigh), it can’t stop you from exploring the great outdoors, no matter the month. Layer up and get your blood pumping, face smiling, and a hefty dose of mother nature with these outdoor experiences available well into winter.
If you’d rather gaze down upon Tahoe’s glory from a higher, snowier vantage point, rent one of Zephyr Cove’s fleet of snowmobiles and let them guide you through miles of trails reaching 9,000 feet in elevation. During the private snowcat tour of the West Shore’s Ellis Peak, located just above Lake Tahoe and across from Desolation Wilderness, you’ll discover deep steeps, expansive powder bowls and secluded glades that’ll leave you stoked on the Sierra long after the adventure is over. skihomewood.com Through Sierra Adventures’ valet service, a shuttle will whisk your party away to an alpine adventure. On the outfitters’ dog-sledding expedition, a musher and team of huskies will guide you through some of the region’s most majestic mountain meadows. Or, opt for a Sierra Adventures sleigh ride, to dash through snowy forests. wildsierra.com

de c adent dining Tucked inside Reno’s Old Southwest alongside acres of ranchland, you’ll find the Club at Rancharrah. At the club’s Nineteen 57 Bar & Restaurant, your taste buds will come alive just as your soul unfolds. Fully embrace the gastronomic experience by starting with a hot amaretto rose and one of the flatbreads. For an entree, consider the cooked-toperfection miso ora king salmon served with ginger butternut squash puree. A private social club, Rancharrah offers a home base to continue returning and exploring the region. rancharrah.com At The Shore restaurant inside the Renaissance Reno, guests can enjoy a Mediterranean-inspired dinner overlooking the Truckee River. A Nando Patrón martini will put the fire back in your spirit following a brisk winter day. After digging into a hearty farm-style appetizer, such as the Greek salad, dive into the masterfully crafted pan-roasted Alaskan halibut. While savoring every spice, you may even catch an evening snowfall. shoreroom.com From elegant mountain escapes to private powder tours to culinary outings that satisfy your soul, winter in Reno/Tahoe is meant for relishing. Take ‘em to the Toy Shop Enlightened toy purveyors abound in Reno/Tahoe. By Tiara Wasner
Kids have a lot of toys, I get it, but when it comes to toys that are educational or art I rarely say no. Let’s face it, kids don’t need another “stuffy” or plastic surprise! I can see you nodding in agreeance. But what about on vacation? Do the same rules apply? You bet. Here’s a lineup of the best spots for cool toys that house fun entertainment options, too.
EX PaNd yoUr М iND I suggest starting at The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, located in Reno, it’s a science center and museum geared towards both children and adults. They offer a variety of permeant exhibits, like the cloud climber, and events all season, ranging from Secrets for Wizards in Training to Chemistry of the Cocktail. Make sure to swing into the gift shop on your way out and pick up a few STEM toys to take home. nvdm.org The Wilbur May Museum, located in Reno, carries an extensive selection of unique and certified Fair Trade items from around the world, including home decor, jewelry, art, and kid’s items. Every purchase enables the museum to continue its mission of bringing educational and fun exhibits to thousands of visitors each year. Snag a puzzle or book about the area. washoecounty.us
Fa МIly f riENdLy FiNds After a long day at Heavenly Mountain, treat the kids to something from Village Toys. Brace yourself because when you walk into Village Toys you'll be amazed at what you'll discover! This store is packed with so much fun and nostalgia. It’s a trip down memory lane. Make sure to check out their educational and science toys, books and board games. Don’t worry, they have a second location in Incline Village if you find yourself on the other side of the lake! villagetoys.com Our favorite South Shore toy store is Tahoe Toys and Treasures. The family owned and operated shop has been a gem in the South Lake Tahoe community for years. It’s where we go for all our birthday gifts! They carry games, puzzles, outdoor toys, educational and scientific toys, books, arts and crafts supplies, plush toys, trading cards, and a whole lot more! toysandtreasures.com In South Reno, locally owned Learning Express Toys stocks a whole slew of Montessori-inspired wares that will both encourage playful learning and are good for the environment. They also have a whole fidget display with spinners, puzzles, and poppers that are sure to keep those busy hands moving. If your little is into art or science, this is the place to get some great at-home or at-the-hotel kits for the budding minds. They often feature a few new finds on the play table and their staff is great at picking out a family favorite. learningexpress.com Whether you’re looking for toys to keep the kids entertained between activities or something to remind you of your trip, Reno/Tahoe has you covered.

HYGGE S T Y L E
A s h o p p i n g g u i d e fo r a l l t h i n g s Da n i s h co m fo r t . By Heidi Bethel
Taking things back to the simpler ways seems to be a natural pivot in response to the many curveballs that have been thrown our way recently. I’m reminded of the Danish concept of hygge, pronounced hooga, offering a cozy, comfortable atmosphere embodying soothing elements and a fondness for the sweet little pleasures that often go overlooked. Several local purveyors have embraced the pleasurable styles for the home, fashion, food and hobbies. They’re offering a way to take a break from the hurry with comfortable contentment.

Hygge for the home Live edge tables bring a bit of nature and can really add a simplistic character to a room. The Urban Elements collection from Hygge Lake Tahoe are beautiful, highlighting the natural curvature and grains in each matchless piece. Add to the aesthetic design with greenery and pots from Old Stone House Gift and Garden in Reno and with a beautiful three-dimensional map from Tahoe Wood Maps. Complete the ambiance with a soothing scented candle or bath salts from The Freckled Frog at The Summit in Reno. hyggelaketahoe.com; stoneagecreations.com; tahoewoodmaps.com; thefreckledfrogreno.com
Hygge fashion Soft and comfortable are my go-tos these days. As the weather remains cool, I love to cuddle up in something slouchy that feels great on my skin. Head to Sidestreet Boutique in South Lake for a cozy Sherpa blanket or soft shawl. At Truckee’s Tahoe Mountain Sports they have slippers for the whole family. For a Sierra-inspired sweatshirt, Reno’s Home Means Nevada stores are filled with snug options with creative adornments (I’m in one of their Battle Born zip ups as I write this.). And, I can’t forget the effortless jewelry that helps create a carefree look, head to Tahoe City and visit Trunk Show for some dainty options. sidestreetboutique.com; tahoemountainsports.com; homemeansnevada.com; tahoetrunkshow.com
Hygge foodies Who doesn’t love a little wine, cheese and dessert? The Danish are known for their delicious morsels and you can enjoy the same culinary mentality in Reno/Tahoe. The Cork and More in South Lake shelves wines from around the globe perfectly paired with their simple snacks. Grab a Danish-inspired pastry at a variety of renowned bakeries — in Reno visit Homage, Perenn Bakery (two locations in Reno and one in Tahoe) or Josef 's Vienna Bakery; at the lake, Tahoe House Bakery and Gourmet and Sugar Pine Bakery are a must; and, L.A. Bakery and Paul Schat’s Bakery are the places to go in Carson Valley. Wash it all down with a cup of hot tea from Salty-savorysweet or Too Soul Tea Shop in Reno. thecorkandmore.com; homagereno.com; perennbakery.com; josefsvienna.com; tahoe-house.com; sugarpinetahoe.com; labakerycafe.com; schatsbakeries.com; salty-savory-sweet.com; toosoultea.com
Hygge hobbies Settle in with light crafting or hobbying to take your mind off the hustle and enjoy some quiet. Jimmy Beans Wool in Reno carries miles of house-dyed yarn, knitting and crocheting needles, patterns and the experts to help you through that next project. A stop by Wild Wood Makers Market in Tahoe with have you walking out the door with journals and crafting supplies. Or, spend some time at Sundance Bookstore in Reno where the book-lined shelves offer a good read for any preference. jimmybeanswool.com; wildwoodmakersmarket.com; sundancebookstore.com Whether it’s the aroma of a calming candle, snuggling up under a warm hoodie, enjoying a soothing drink, or sitting down to a comfortable pastime, go a little hygge with help from some Reno/Tahoe favorites. LOOKING FOR DINING, A D V E N T U R E O R C U LT U R E ? LOOK NO FURTHER THAN DOWNTOWN AND MIDTOWN RENO. Spend a day wandering Virginia Street and, if you’re like me, you’ll end the day eager to see more. There’s something for everyone in the area, from thrill seekers to thrifters and foodies to art folk. I myself am a little interested in everything, so it’s the perfect spot to explore with friends or on my own. Near the Truckee River, you’ll find the gorgeous West Elm inside an equally spectacular historic Reno building. Just across the street, be sure to pop in and admire the Sierra Arts Foundation gallery. You will surely find inspiration as you wander through these spots. sierraarts.org; westelm.com Stop in the many wonderful shops of midtown, further south on Virginia Street, to find potted plants, handmade soaps, unique clothing, and more. Some of my favorites are all within walking distance. Whenever I have a free day, I love to grab a refreshing iced coffee at Bibo Coffee Co. and get shopping. bibocoffeecompany.com For stylish, Nevada-chic finds check out Sierra Belle Boutique in The Sticks. If you’re a yogi, you might enjoy shopping at Hello Yoga next door. Around the corner from The Sticks is a new shop that I am particularly excited about — Freestyle Clothing Exchange is a thrift and consignment shop with amazing new and used finds for every aesthetic. shopsierrabelle.com; satoridancewear.com; freestyleclothing.com Across the street from these shops is Natural Selection, where a friendly and knowledgeable associate can help you find the perfect plant. You might even get to see the shop’s mascot, an adorable, friendly bull terrier. naturalselectionstore.com
DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN DINING The most relaxing, beautiful area for a bite to eat downtown is the Riverwalk District. You can enjoy delightful dining on the beautiful Truckee River at many restaurants. One of my favorites is the Wild River Grille. Grab your friends, your dog, or a date to enjoy inventive appetizers, creative cocktails, and mouth-watering dishes on the patio by the river. On chillier nights, head into their dining room (but leave the pooch at home). wildrivergrille.com Across the river you’ll find two exciting culinary establishments, Campo and Liberty Food & Wine Exchange. These restaurants each have unique, decadent menu options from small plates to pasta. Dine at either and you’ll get a real taste of Reno. renorestaurant.wixsite.com/camporeno, libertyfoodandwine.com To cap off your night, check out Reno’s vibrant nightlife. Reno has a bar for every vibe … laid back, dance, craft, game and more. Some local favorites include Chapel, Rum Sugar Lime, Death and Taxes, The Z Bar and The Glass Die. At each one, bartenders will make you a fantastic drink and you will have a unique, memorable experience. Wherever you choose to indulge in a nightcap, you’re guaranteed to get a delicious drink and make great memories. chapeltavern.com, zbarreno.com rumsugarlime.com, deathandtaxesreno.com, theglassdie.com Whether you have a free day or just a free couple of hours, downtown and midtown Reno are definitely worth checking out. If you’re into food, thrifting, skincare, art, or adventure, a journey along Virginia Street is sure to be rad. getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
