One of our favorite spots is The Bunker at Woodward Tahoe, located just steps from Boreal Mountain Resort’s main chairlift. The Bunker is a 33,000 square foot indoor park where you can really perfect your skills before trying them out on the slopes. It features six Olympic-sized trampolines, an indoor concrete skate park, a tumbling track, Parkour Zone, and Launch Pad, which is an indoor mega ramp to launch you into a massive foam pit! You might just have more fun in here with your buddies than your kids will. (woodwardtahoe.com / 530.426.1114) Didn’t you love playing arcade games and winning fantastic prizes when you were little? At Circus Circus Reno Midway you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the Midway, they offer fun for all ages! With 28 carnival games and over 50 prize-redemption games, including the classic and ever popular Skee Ball, you’ll be hooked! Take home a giant stuffed animal or even a Razor Scooter— and bragging rights of course. Hands-on museums are always a hit with the younger crowd. Head over to The Discovery where the whole family can spend the day learning and exploring. If you’d like to leave the kids at home, check their calendar for their special Social Science nights for those 21+ featuring intriguing science demonstration, clever art projects, beer wine and hors d'oeuvres, and of course, museum exploration. (nvdm.org / 775.786.1000) Racing go-karts is another favorite pastime, and the go-karts at Need 2 Speed are a little different than what you might remember from your childhood. These bad boys can reach 45 miles per hour and accelerate from zero to 40 in less than five seconds! The karts are electric and deliver a superb response and handling. This indoor track is open year round and is the perfect activity for a group of friends or family. (n2sreno.com / 775.851.RACE)

Soaring Over Lake Tahoe BY DIANE HANSEN PHOTOS SOARING NV
I
’m not going to call myself a daredevil, although GO sometimes I wishREAD I were one.WATCH My vacation stories are usually pretty light on the action, heavy on the hammocks. Would I like to do a deep dive at high altitude in Lake Tahoe? Absolutely! Have I gone beyond taking a beginning diving class in a swimming pool? No.
So, needless to say, I was a little nervous when I found myself considering going aloft in an aircraft with no engine. At first thought, flying in a glider seemed like an activity only for the adventurous in spirit or brave of heart. Yet after just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands. The professionals at SoaringNV really took their time getting me comfortable with my safety equipment, the glider itself and what I would be experiencing before I took off. Even though I would be sitting in front, Russell Holtz, an FAA-certified glider pilot instructor with over 10,000 glider flights in his stack of log books, would literally have my back, piloting the plane from the back seat. Suited up with the first parachute I have worn in my life, I was excited and ready to go. Russell explained the controls to me like I was a pilot in training. The excitement mounted as the tow plane pilot attached the tow line to the glider, started his own engine and began to take off. The glider followed the tow plane with ease. At the right moment, Russell let me pull the yellow knob for releasing the tow line. He told me I could have any kind of flight I wanted. We could take it nice and easy around Lake Tahoe, and if conditions were right, he could let me maneuver the glider. Or, if I wanted a little adrenaline, we could do some tricks. I felt completely in control. For a while, I just sat and marveled at the crystalline blue of Lake Tahoe and enjoyed it from an angle few people get to experience.
After just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands.
My whole flight could have stayed this relaxing. But then something great happened. I got this amazing burst of confidence and courage. I flew the glider on my own! Then, I told Russell I was ready to do some tricks. How many people can say they flew upside down over Lake Tahoe? Well, at least one. In one flight, I went from the girl who doesn’t venture to the woman who does and loves it. In fact, I’ve taken lessons since this flight. Am I on the fast track to a glider pilot’s license? Not quite… but, I’m building up the confidence! If you are seeking relaxation or even a little adventure, you should take a glider ride at SoaringNV. They offer lessons, too! In fact, if you want a taste of what it’s like to soar on your own, you should try an introductory lesson. When you schedule in advance, Russell can teach you soaring basics in ground school. Then, with your instructor literally right behind you, get towed to 3,000 feet and try your hand at the stick. You get a log book with your first flight as an entry and even a discount off your second lesson. Anyone can put you in a glider, but SoaringNV gives you an experience you will never forget. Give them a call at 775-782-9595, or check out their website. Tell them Getaway Reno/Tahoe Magazine sent you! SoaringNV.com

Fall 2014
READ
The west coast of the U.S. is a hot bed of craft brewing activity producing some of the most sought after and innovative beers in the world, and the Reno/Tahoe region has burst onto the scene at a fast and furious pace. In recent years, we’ve seen a serious increase in the demand for beers made here, and created a thriving home-brewer culture. This allowed our larger breweries, like Great Basin Brewing Company, to increase production and expand distribution, and inspired newer breweries, like Pigeon Head Brewery, to startup. Reno/Tahoe now boasts more than 13 breweries, and while each makes a product called beer, they apply unique philosophies and approaches to brewing it. With so many brews you can choose from in the area, we talked to a few of our community’s favorites to find out what they have in store for the season. Pigeon Head Brewery, one of the area’s newest breweries, wants you to stop by and “Get Lagered”! Opened in May 2014, Pigeon Head is pushing the boundaries in west coast brewing by brushing aside popular styles and focusing their

GO
efforts on bringing lager brewing into its rightful place. Lager brewing creates a smoother, cleaner finish on the palate, and having tasted the Black Lager, Red Rye, and India Pale Lager (IPL), I can tell you that statement is true to the last sip! Pigeon Head’s tasting room is industrial and urban, but with some serious polish courtesy of great planning, furniture and design accents made from beautifully reconditioned and reclaimed materials. Brewmaster Lance has some exciting things planned for this season including Oktoberfest, Christmas Lager, and a special brew called Soaring. For the perfect afternoon, use your Yelp app to find some snacks and take them over to #getlagered with a few tasters, pints, or maybe even a growler. pigeonheadbrewery.com Ever want to take a chance on making something great? Brewmaster Charlie Johnson gets to do that daily at The Brewer’s Cabinet brew pub. Charlie uses a 3.5 barrel brewing system, which means they can only produce about six kegs per batch. However, it also means that he’s constantly creating beer that
could be here one day and gone like the dinosaurs the next. Charlie uses the purest and freshest ingredients to produce big bold flavors, many of which are developed in his extensive barrel-aging program. Since this is his favorite time of year, you can count on BC to blow your mind with seasonals. Their lineup includes “Pumpkin King” made with toasted marshmallows and local Lattin Farms pumpkins; “Old Fashioned,” a bourbon barrel-aged amber ale with maraschino cherries and orange zest; and “Dog Sled,” a milk chocolate stout made with Ecuadorian Cacao nibs brewed in honor of Charlie’s Siberian Huskies. All the great brews at BC go well with something on their extensive menu. Yelpers love the tater tots, which are house made from local potatoes, smothered in cheese sauce, green onion, bacon, and topped with a fried egg, but you’ll also find great salads, burgers, and even breakfast on the weekends. thebrewerscabinet.com Under the Rose Brewing Company exists to make beer a positive force in our community, and Scott Emond and Jesse Kleinedler are doing that one pint at a time. UTR is throwing hops to the wind in favor of flavors that create more session-able brews. With names like saisonbeer, blondebeer, and porterbeer you think you know what you’re getting into, but one sip and you can taste the thought and love that went into their creation. For the beer geek, check out the menu cards. You’ll find the specific ingredients selected by Brewmaster Scott for each recipe, and if you have questions, just ask. UTR is set up to brew small batch seasonals all year long, and the fall and winter lineup includes holidaybeer, a Belgian dubbel made with warm mulling spices, pumpkinbeer, a spicy pumpkin ale made with chilis, and a special peppermint porterbeer. The tasting room is the perfect place to partake of these pints and play a game. You’ll find an indoor bocce court, foosball, ping pong and more. When you get hungry, a quick search on the Yelp app in the area will reveal several great options, including personal faves like Pho 777, Noble Pie Parlor, and Los Gallos Taqueria. undertherosebrewing.com Tahoe Mountain Brewery is all about creating emotionally evocative brews that provide drinkers with
new sensory experiences. Sound complicated? That’s because it is! Head Brewer Elijah Pasciak started life in the culinary arena, and brought his knowledge of food and flavors to the world of brewing when he joined Tahoe Mountain. With the help of three other brewers, they brew beer in an old-world fashion, similar to the way farmers did in the preindustrialized world. While these methods present them with challenges, they also give them plenty of opportunity to create flavors and sensations you simply can’t get any other way when brewing beer. Think of beer that’s delicate, crisp, dry, sour, tart, or hoppy, and some that combine all of those flavors and sensations. Brewery tours are available in Truckee by appointment, so call ahead, and there is a tasting room that serves snacks. The beer lineups at the brewery and the brew pub in Tahoe City change frequently, so make sure and check out the list on their website. tahoebrewing.com Our brewers are interesting and passionate people, friendly beyond belief, and excited to share what they’ve created with all of you. So whether you’re looking to linger over a smooth lager, the ferocious hop kick of a west coast IPA, or go in search of a satisfying saison, remember they can all be found right here in Reno/Tahoe.
If you want to see photos and read more of what locals are saying about these and other breweries, check them out on Yelp.com.

When the leaves start changing and the weather is cooling down, nothing sounds better to me than true comfort food. For me, this comes in the form of warm, pleasing pizza. Here are some of my top local favorites and must-try pizza places worth a visit around the Biggest Little City. PHOTO NOBLE PIE PARLOR
PHOTO SOUTH CREEK PIZZA CO.

f you are in the market for one of the most amazing “pies” around, Noble Pie Parlor is your place. At this hidden gem located on the Riverwalk, they seek out locally-produced, GMO-free ingredients, and most of their pizza ingredients, such as the meatballs, sauce, and dough, are all house made. They have a wonderful selection of innovative pies to offer you. My favorites are the T-Pane with caramelized fennel-apple-onion, granny smith apples, sausage, provolone, and pecorino cheese, and the Ain’t No Thing with prosciutto and pineapple as the top ingredients. Noble Pie Parlor is the place to go if you’re looking for gluten-free and vegan pizza options – and no visit would be complete without their award-winning chicken wings. noblepieparlor.com
University. J.J.’s is family-owned and operated, and they use only the freshest ingredients. It’s also my favorite place to get a classic cheese or pepperoni pizza. With sports memorabilia covering every bit of wall space, there is always a game on the TV and great draft specials for you to enjoy. They have mastered the art of community and great classic pizza – and it is here that my love for pizza started. Don’t forget to ask for their signature – a side of honey for dipping your crust! jjspieco.com
Down on the Riverwalk, nestled right next to the famous Truckee River, is a true local’s favorite and tourist surprise. The Jungle is one of the best eclectic coffee shops and wine bars around, and as a local, I had heard rumors about their amazing pizza. All of the pizzas are 10 inches and made with homemade dough and sauce. The thin crust-style is crunchy (my favorite!) and the best part? The pizzas are only $5 at the bar during happy hour. thejunglereno.com
Head down to the south end of town, and you’ll find South Creek Pizza Co., one of Reno’s newest pizza places tucked into the corner of the South Creek Shopping Center. For me, going here is like being in Italy. The Neapolitan-style dough is made from flour imported straight out of Naples, and produces some of the softest dough I’ve ever tasted. The pizza bar is an experience in itself, as it overlooks the open kitchen where you can actually watch your pizza cook in the wood-fired brick oven in about 90 seconds. Cooking at a temperature of 900 degrees seems to speed it along, but it definitely does not cut back on the amazing flavors you will enjoy here. southcreekpizza.com
Reno is home to the University of Nevada, and as an alumni, I lived on pizza while attending school. When I think of my go-to spot, it was always J.J.’s Pie Co. This pizza place has been around for more than 29 years, and is conveniently located about a mile from the
Whether you are looking for innovative, classic, brick oven, or a local’s favorite – you can enjoy some of the best pizza pies this town has to offer.

PHOTO UTILITY PLAYERS LOCAL COMEDIC ACT
Ha! Ha! Hilarious! Local Comedy Clubs = Lots of Laughs BY HEIDI BETHEL
Hey there! I’ve got a joke for you. Why was the tomato blushing? Wait for it…because he saw the salad dressing. Okay, okay, while I may not be the next contestant on the Last Comic Standing (and, in full disclosure, I swiped the joke from a Laffy Taffy wrapper), I can tell you about some winning comedy houses in Reno and Lake Tahoe providing hours of amusing entertainment.

Whether staying in the city or at the lake, you can enjoy the funny-filled acts appearing at Reno Tahoe Comedy. On a recent night in Reno, after descending down a flight of stairs into Pioneer Underground, I found a charming bar and movie theater-style club with a few seats encircling the well-lit stage. The comedian styles ranged from one-liners to storytellers, and they were each humorous in their own way. Their sister location, located at Crystal Bay Club in Lake Tahoe, is just as memorable. Plus, you get amazing views on the drive. From October through December, both locations will feature local wellknown acts including Sean Peabody, Justin Rupple, Geechy Guy, Kelly Hilbert and Drew Shafer. And, during the Christmas/New Year holiday, Comedy Central star Felipe Esparza will return to the Biggest Little City for appearances at both locations. For an updated schedule, please visit renotahoecomedy.com. With room for only 180 guests, Catch a Rising Star at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino is the most comfortably intimate comedy club in the area. Upon entering, my friends and I were seated in lounge chairs surrounding a table big enough for just a few cocktails. During the show, the performers can literally see the whites of our eyes and we’re not in the front row. This venue is one of multiple Catch a Rising Star Comedy Clubs located across the United States. While they do occasionally book unique acts, the majority of the headliners are stand-up comics. Upcoming performers include Bobby Collins (November 7-8), Sam Morrill (November 11-16), Mitchell Walters (November 18-23), Rob Little (November 25-30), Frances Dilorinzo (December 2-7), and Kevin Downey and Eric Potts (December 9-14), plus a few others still in the works. For more information, visit silverlegacyreno.com.
After celebrating its 50th year at Lake Tahoe, The Improv at Harveys Lake Tahoe is the area’s longest running venue. As the club’s host, emcee and general manager Howie Nave explains, “The comics LOVE coming up here.” In fact, some celebrity comics, including Dana Carvey, Jon Lovitz and the late Robin Williams, have surprised audiences with unannounced five-minute guest sets. One midweek night we watched a performance by Charles Fleischer, the actor who did the voice for Roger Rabbit in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” After an amusing one-hour bit with tons of audience interaction, he compiled all of the ad lib comedy into a finale song that had me rolling on the floor. Other feature performers you might catch are Kivi Rogers and Avi Liberman (October 29-November 2), Scott Record and Frances Dilorinzo (November 5-9), Ahmed Ahmed and Feral Ozel (November 12-16), Mark Pitta and Annie Lederman (November 19-23), Tom Rhodes and Ahmed Bharoocha (December 3-7), Gary Cannon (December 10-14), Darren Carter and Amir K (December 17-21), and more. For more information, visit harveystahoe.com/shows/the-improv-at-harveys. With local acts, like the Utility Players, and performances from national headliners, every night’s bit is a little different and you never know what laughable moments may ensue.

Crawls have become a popular way to experience the Riverwalk District in downtown Reno over the last few years. Locals and tourists alike mark their calendars and spend countless hours designing costumes, and some even plan their entire year around those five to six hours of entertainment. There aren’t too many cities offering you the chance to walk around, feel the community and visit various bars and restaurants in one day on a monthly basis, but The Biggest Little City does.

Crawls give you the opportunity to be creative, spend time with friends, or support local retail shops by purchasing unique costumes and experience an alter ego. Whether you choose to enjoy a day tasting the local cuisine with one of the seasonal food tours, dress as Wonder Woman for the Super Hero Crawl, a pirate during the Pirate Crawl, a zombie killer for the Zombie Crawl, or simply blend into the crowd of over 10,000 Santas for the annual Santa Crawl, the options are endless. If there isn’t a special event crawl, there’s no need to worry. Crawls are offered each month where hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors come to this area to try the beer or wine. The third Saturday of every month also offers you the Reno Wine Walk. For a $20 wine-tasting ticket fee and valid photo ID, you’ll receive a map, ID bracelet, hand stamp and commemorative glass allowing you to sample wine at any of the twentyplus participating merchant locations. Many of the businesses hand paint each individual wine glass that attendees get to take home. At the end of the event, you can enter to win over $700 in gift cards from all the participating merchants during a 5 p.m. raffle. The best part of this ongoing event is that portions of all the event proceeds benefit local charitable organizations. In over five years, the event organizers have donated more than $65,000 to local non-profits. You can also enjoy wine walks in Carson Valley, downtown Truckee, the Village at Northstar, and Carson City. On the fourth Saturday of each month you can dedicate your time to the ever-so-popular Reno Beer Crawl, which is now celebrating its sixth year of operation. For a $5.00 admission fee, you receive a commemorative Reno Beer Crawl glass, wristband and map to use throughout this self-guided event. For an additional $1.00 you can enjoy 6-ounce samples equaling nearly half a beer at each of the participating downtown Reno locations. The beer options are vast and unique ranging from artisan craft beers to something more traditional. The evening caps off with a raffle giveaway at 6 p.m. where you have the chance to win over $400 in prizes and gift cards from participating businesses.
About the Author: Courtney Meredith is the owner of a Reno based boutique design and advertising agency, and author of the historical pictorial manuscript “Riverwalk District, Images of America.” She is passionate about the Biggest Little City, and you can usually find her mixing and mingling at one of the many art, wine and food events.
“The crawls turn downtown into a giant block party and you really see the community part of Reno shine,” said West Mueller, a local Reno bartender. All of the organizations work with the local Reno police department to create a safe and fun event. Most, if not all, of the crawls and walks in Reno benefit local non-profit organizations. These monthly crawls have really added to the experience, and they continually support small and start-up companies in the Riverwalk and surrounding areas. As you throw together your zombievampire-superhero-ugly sweater-costume, remember you aren’t just drinking to have fun, you’re supporting local businesses. It’s also important to remember that Reno prohibits open containers in public places and fines heavily those who don’t obey. Please remember everyone is out to have a good time, so be responsible and together let’s enjoy a taste of the city! All Aboard the V&T Railroad! Enjoy a whole new Nevada on the area’s festive train rides BY HEIDI BETHEL

hen I was 19 years old, I took an amazing train ride winding through the state’s beautiful backcountry. This holiday season, you can experience this same wonder and amazement. Conductors will charter the grounds of Northern Nevada on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad with themed train rides providing memorable experiences for you to cherish forever.
noon and 2 p.m. on November 28, 29 and December 6, 7, 13 and 14, and you’ll meet the ever-so-pleasant Candy Cane Sisters and enjoy handmade treats. You can find out more at virginiatruckee.com. If you’ve never experienced the swoop and sway of a train, any one of these themed rides offer you a memorable locomotive adventure on Nevada’s frontier.
If you’re up for a spooky treat, the Adult Spirits and Wine Train in Virginia City offers a 21-and-over excursion on November 1. Costumed partygoers travel the haunted railways on a vintage train ride while enjoying chilling spirits and wine. You can learn more about this fun adventure at virginiatruckee.com. From November 21 to December 22, The Polar Express ride mimics a young boy’s journey to the North Pole in Chris Val Allsburg’s classic tale. You will feel as though you and your pajama-clad children just stepped onto the pages of the book as the train makes its way from Carson City, then through the twists and turns of Virginia City and Santa’s Village. As the conductor comes to punch your tickets and chefs serve delicious hot chocolate, the story seems to come to life, with many more surprises along the way. I quickly found a pair of new mittens, some crazy goggles, and the everimportant heater packs, which will make a great stocking stuffer. (tahoesportsltd.com / 530-542-4000) Once the car was packed, I quickly popped in to Lake Tahoe Holidays where I stocked up on all my holiday decorations. They carry all sorts of unique items for every holiday from Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and more! While I was there, I made sure to pick up a few of their special collectable hand-painted ornaments to commemorate the holiday season. These are very special keepsakes and I love adding a new one to the collection each year. (530-544-8684) Whatever you are looking for, Village Center is your one-stop-shop this holiday season!

Pick up a piece of history in the Carson Valley These antique shops offer a trip back in time The Carson Valley is part of the fabric of the country’s western migration, and that rich history provides fertile grounds for the antique hunter. With a broad selection of stores and items, you are sure to come across a piece of history that catches your eye. Antiquing is a window into the history of the Carson Valley and the people it has hosted for many years. The historical experience at Cheshire Antiques extends to the building itself. Owners Karen and Richard Campbell opened their business in 2005 in the old Arendt Jensen Mercantile, which opened in the spring of 1896, making it a piece of Gardnerville’s historic district. Today, you can find antique furniture, dolls, memorabilia, art, vintage toys and more. Cheshire is an antique mall that entreats its customers to have fun and ask questions. It’s also a pet-friendly place complete with a store cat. In keeping with the historical tour, you’ll want to stop off at Antiques Plus located on the Main Street of Genoa. This shop is located in the Dake House, one of Nevada’s oldest gothic Victorians. Preserved in much of its original condition, you’ll enjoy a trip back in time while window shopping. You can browse through their collection of fine Victorian antiques, and be sure to ask about the Ansel Adams photo of the Dake house before it was restored. If you’re looking for antique home and table décor, Quail Cottage Antiques located in Gardnerville is the perfect place for you to visit. You can choose vintage collectables beautifully arranged in a quaint cottage in styles that range from Victorian to mid-century modern. Another great place to visit is Laura Springs Ranch & Country Antiques located on a historic Carson Valley ranch on Foothill Road. The shop, located in a large barn,

also specializes in furniture and English glassware. During your stop, pay a visit to the historic home of Dr. Eliza Cook, Nevada’s first female doctor. After receiving her degree in 1884, Cook made her office in the Carson Valley and delivered babies from Genoa to Markleeville for about six years. If you are not an antique expert, don’t worry. There is plenty of knowledge to be found on site, since many stores have appraisers. Tumblewind Antiques and Collectibles in downtown Minden has 4,000 square feet and more than 30 dealers. You’ll find more than enough eclectic items to choose from including linens, Native American items, and western memorabilia. The Carson Valley offers you a vintage shopping oasis where you can enjoy a personal treasure hunt into the past. The possibilities await! PHOTO ANTIQUES PLUS

Reno Threads Trendy Reno Consignment Shops You'll Love BY CARISSA OATLEY
PHOTO LABELS CONSIGNMENT BOUTIQUE
There’s a new craze hitting downtown Reno, which offers me two of my favorite things in life – shopping and affordability. Second-hand shopping has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl, and much to my delight, it has become popular in recent years. With a few shops making their way into my town, I decided to check them out.

Fall 2014
I
was in need of a little bit of retail therapy, so I made my way to Labels Consignment Boutique where I knew I could find clothing from some of my favorite designers at incredible prices. At this upscale boutique, their namesake says it all. They are selective about the “labels” they bring in, and it makes for an easy and stress free time in the store. This designer retail store was a dream come true for the fashionista hiding inside of me as I found all my favorites marked down to amazingly low, discounted prices. The options were endless, from clothing and handbags to jewelry and accessories, so I was able to get a little bit of everything all in one place without doing too much damage to my credit card. What a find this was as it is a true Reno local’s favorite! Just down the street in the same Riverwalk District, I decided to venture into Antiques and Treasures. All the unique and exciting things waiting for me blew me away – treasures are without a doubt the best way to describe what I found in here! If you are looking for something truly special and different, this is the place to find it.
Over in the newly revived Midtown section of Reno, my first stop was at Plato’s Closet. Since I am always on the hunt for a good deal, there is no better place than this gently used designer clothing store where they always seem to have the best selection of name-brand jeans. Jeans are my weakness, and I could easily own a closet full. However, with some of the prices for top-of-the-line jeans these days, this is my go-to spot. From True Religion to Joes, I always find the perfect pair. Next door is a highfashion version of Plato’s Closet, with the same owner, and this is where I like to always look for my cocktail dresses, work clothes, and designer shoes. One of the best parts about these two spots? You can trade in some of your old clothes you no longer wear, and get credit for new finds! With so many options for shopping this holiday season, why not try something new and different? Any of these stores can provide you both the satisfaction of top name brands, and keep you within your shopping budget.
