So categorized. Young, old, super model, plus size. Here’s my life hack. Wear what makes you feel amazing.

Go with colour if that’s your thing. Get into the current trend of ‘arse out’ swimwear if it makes you happy. Paint your nails, red, green ,pink ,yellow- just do it!

We are governed in our fashion choices not by what we like but by what we think society is going to give us permission to wear.

Over 40? You bloody rock that strapless dress! Worried about your bingo wings? I bet you’ve got fabulous boobs! We need to get into the space where, as women, we can celebrate, not judge each other’s fashion choices.

There are some amazing fashion icons in their 80s and you know what adds to their fabulous fashion -their confidence. I have an 18 year old daughter and youth is beautiful. She is literally shiny with her nascence. We were all that 18-year-old. Although my ‘clubbing’ fashion was a white collared shirt and stonewashed jeans. The girls at 18 OWN their look and they don’t shame each other for their fashion choices. Spring racing is about the young, the mammary enhanced and the botoxed. But is also about hanging with your friends and drinking champagne and wearing a hat!

Let’s embrace the diversity of bodies and fashion and stop trying to conform to the extremely narrow ideals of the ‘serious’ fashion world.

I am heading to Melbourne Cup in a fabulous off the shoulder pink pantsuit (dangerous I know- pantsuit + drinks = an extreme degree of difficulty). I am also wearing an over-the-top headpiece from the op shop and some killer heels. Let’s embrace our eclectic fashion choices and rejoice in the amazing diversity of the sisterhood. Also never do shots and cheap champagne will bite you.

Is your skin ready for the Queensland Summer?

With spring in full swing, many of us are eager to head outside and enjoy the warmer weather. But as we soak up the sun, it is important to ensure we take care of our skin health and prepare our skin for another Queensland summer.

The Sunshine State is the skin cancer capital of the world. In Queensland, melanoma rates reach 40 per cent higher than the national average. “A full skin cancer check is the best place to start to ensure your skin is healthy and safe,” says Skin Cancer Doctor Matthew Power at the Gold Coast Skin Centre in Palm Beach.

“Your Skin Cancer Doctor can provide you with peace of mind that there are no nasty surprises which could lead to serious problems if left undiagnosed and untreated.”

Every day, five Australians lose their lives to melanoma, which is sometimes barely visible to the naked eye. But 99 per cent of skin cancers are curable if detected and treated early, which is why experts recommend regular skin checks. “Early detection through regular full-body skin cancer checks is the best defence. Our mission is to detect skin cancers in the early stages to minimise complex, invasive, and expensive treatments, and ultimately save lives,” says Dr Power. Between professional skin checks, we can look out for lesions that stand out as different from the others. Check for any sores that won’t heal, freckles that have recently developed or changed, or areas that are crusting, itching, or bleeding. If anything looks suspicious, get it checked straight away. Skin cancer can develop very fast and become fatal, and sometimes shows no signs until an advanced stage. “We don’t know what it is until we see it!” says Dr Power. Queenslanders can be at particularly high risk of skin cancer if they are over 40, male, or have a personal or family history of skin cancer. The risk is also higher for people who have experienced severe sunburn, used a solarium, worked outdoors, or have multiple moles, fair skin, or light-coloured hair or eyes. Fortunately, a lifetime of sun exposure can be addressed before it takes a toll on our skin health. Spring is a great time to address existing skin damage like sunspots, pigmentation and dryness, and even acne, rosacea and ageing. “In addition to a skin check, many of our patients who have seen too much sun over their lives benefit from dermal therapies to repair accumulated sun damage,” says Dr Power.

Ideal treatments for skin rejuvenation include LED light therapy, medical-grade Cosmelan depigmentation peels, skin needling, and microdermabrasion. “It’s never too late to repair sun damaged skin,” says Skin Therapist Phoebe at Gold Coast Skin Centre.

“We also see a lot of patients coming out of winter with dehydrated or dry skin. Some are experiencing flare-ups of rosacea, acne, or redness. At this time of year, many people are also thinking about getting their skin summer-ready, so they want to start a treatment regime now that will give them long-term benefits.” Patients visiting Gold Coast Skin Centre benefit from a complimentary consultation with a Skin Therapist to address their specific concerns with a tailored treatment plan. Millie Wade - Pharmacy Manager

Whites’ healthy legacy lives on

When Terry and Rhonda White first became pharmacists six decades ago, they never anticipated their innovative ideas and approach to customer care would ignite a desire to franchise hundreds of stores around the country and pave the way for pharmacies throughout Australia.

Terry White

When Terry married Rhonda in 1961, he had just purchased his first pharmacy at Woody Point on the Redcliffe Peninsula. They both worked hard growing their business over the next 10 years and their family of five and then decided to pursue further studies – Terry in Government and Rhonda in Psychology and Organisational Development. “There has been a lot of innovation in our professional careers. We’ve gone from being pharmacists who compounded most products – making ointments, creams and powders to where we are today – There is Always a Better Way”. When the flagship Terry White Chemists opened its doors in Australia Fair in 1990, the Whites were bombarded with interest in their revolutionary and cutting-edge design. “There was nothing like it in Community Pharmacy in Australia,” Rhonda said. “A pharmacist manager is required to be responsible for what goes on in all parts of the pharmacy at all times. As an Organisational Psychologist it was clear to me that the only way to meet that standard in all our pharmacies was to develop documented systems and protocols by which all must operate. “Some time in 1993 one of our managers called me to say, ‘I don’t want to manage anymore, I want to buy my own pharmacy, but I want to call it Terry White Chemists’. We had a well- developed format which we knew was of great support and value to pharmacies – so that’s when the franchise began and the Brand took off.” Late in the 1990’s, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia realised community pharmacy needed a governance and quality assurance programme. Rhonda subsequently gifted the Systems Manual she had developed for Terry White Chemists to the Pharmacy Guild. Her pioneering governance provided the beginning of what is now known as the Quality Care Pharmacy Program, the accreditation currently required for the over 6000 community pharmacies throughout Australia.

In March this year, the couple celebrated 60 years of marriage. Asked about their time working together while maintaining a relationship and having a family, they both admit the first few years were difficult. “Initially we had a few personality clashes in different areas of the business until we worked out our roles and learned to work co-operatively. Rhonda has always been the heart and soul of the brand, while my role was to grow the network.” The TerryWhite Chemmart brand is regarded as one of Australia’s most iconic home-grown businesses. The franchise company is now owned by the EBOS Group and the independently owned pharmacies trade as TerryWhite Chemmart.

Looking ahead at the future, they both laugh when retirement is questioned. “I think it’s fair to say neither of us believes in complete retirement. We certainly have changed the intensity of what we do and spend more time with our Grandchildren who have started out on their own careers doing all sorts of wonderful things,” Terry said. TerryWhite Chemmart Australia Fair is currently undergoing a complete transformation to deliver a world-class health, wellbeing, and beauty experience for customers, especially those living at the northern end of the Gold Coast.

The rejuvenation of the store, set for completion in October, will reveal an enhanced health and beauty precinct. Increased wellness programs are supported by six pharmacists on the team with certified pharmacy assistants and pharmacy students.
