Call for weekend poll for presidential election ÓGRA Fianna Fáil in Donegal has launched a campaign calling on the Government to keep its commitment of holding polling in elections and referenda at weekends. As part of the campaign Ógra has launched an Email Lobby Tool on the organisations website which allows members of the public to easily communicate a message to the Government. Ógra Fianna Fáil has set an ambitious target of over 10,000 emails to be delivered from members of the public over the next 30 days. Speaking at Saturday’s campaign launch, Spokesperson for Donegal Ógra Fianna Fáil Michael Regan said “The Fine Gael and Labour Government’s decision to renege on their promise, by holding the upcoming Presidential election on Thursday 27th October and not on a weekend date, must be reversed, as committed to during the General Election Campaign. “Midweek Polling prevents many students and employees living or working outside the constituency from exercising their democratic franchise. “Ógra is inviting all members of the public to participate in the online campaign calling for Weekend Polling by logging on to the website www.ogra.ie and using the Email Campaign Tool to send a message to the Government.”

Gay returns to Donegal as pressure grows on him to stand for president THE man who could be Ireland’s next President spent the week in Donegal deciding if he will run in the most-talked about election for years. Gay Byrne has been a visitor to Donegal for the past 40 years and owns a house on the outskirts of Dungloe. The former Late Late Show host has been swamped by media requests about if he will put his name forward for the Aras hotseat. Gaybo spent Friday night hillwalking around West Donegal with more than a dozen friends on a year trek. Gay, who has just turned 77, prom-

ised he would celebrate the occasion by having a “ball of malt.” Gay, who is a regular visitor to the area and is very friendly with Pat Nora Gallagher, insists he has not been approached by any political party. However speculation is growing the Fianna Fail did approach the veteran broadcaster to sound him out on standing. Gay said that his age would in no way stop him form standing for the Presidency. He recently went for a hospital check-up at St Vincent’s in Dublin
CUSTOMS officials backed by gardai are carrying out a series of operations across Donegal today, targeting motorists using laundered or agricultural diesel. A series of rolling checkpoints took place over the last few days, with more planned over the coming days. At one roadblock, at the junction of the Dunlewey and Gaoth Dobhair roads earlier, customs officers used specialist equipment to check the fuel being used by drivers of cars, lorries and vans. It is part of an operation to detect both dodgy diesel users and the sources of that illegal fuel. “We have become aware in
and was told he was the healthiest man in the hospital! Gay said he will now take soundings and said it would be an insult to the office of the President if he did not consider it. He said simply “We’ll see what develops.” Locals are already beginning to speculate about the fall-out if Gaybo does get the nod for the Aras. ‘President to open Mary From Dungloe Festival’ may not be pie-inthe-sky afterall!

recent weeks that the number of motorists using either agricultural diesel directly or laundered agricultural diesel may have increased significantly,” said one Customs source. “We are reacting to that and a number of vehicles have been stopped and checked in County Donegal in recent days. “Operations will continue over the coming days, with intelligence-led investigations in a number of areas.” Motorists caught using dodgy diesel can lose their vehicles and face huge fines.

Leading barrister slams state of Donegal’s courthouses A leading barrister has slammed court conditions across County Donegal saying people can’t even get a coffee in them. Barrister Damian Crawford said conditions are completely inadequate and must be upgraded. Mr Crawford said it is not good enough that solicitors or barristers cannot even meet their clients in private. “If we want to chat or have a discussion with a client we must do that out on the street with traffic going by. That’s just not good enough,” he said. Mr Crawford referred to Letterkenny Courthouse which he said did not even have enough seats for members of the public to sit down in “There are no facilities for people with children and you can’t even get a cup of coffee because there are no vending machines. “It certainly needs to be updated,” he said. There are plans to build a new courthouse in Letterkenny on the old Leisure Centre site on the town’s High Road.
However it is unclear when construction will commence because of the recent economic downturn. Mr Crawford added that poor facilities were not just confined to Letterkenny courthouse. He says Buncrana courthouse is equally in need of updating. “I can remember having consultations with clients in the lane at the side of Buncrana courthouse in the snow because there are not proper facilities there either,” he said.
Model Roisin in the driving seat – even without a full license! CREESLOUGH woman Roisin McConway may be in the driving seat for next weekend’s Miss Ireland contest but she certainly hasn’t a license to win it! The 19 year old model has been picked by SEAT to represent the car giant in the finals at the D4 Hotel in Dublin. Part of her prize has been the keys to a brand new SEAT Leon. However the former butcher and now student teacher can’t get behind the wheel because she doesn’t have a full license. She revealed “I think it takes about six weeks to get a date. I’m going to reapply for my provisional just in case.” With her stunning looks, getting a date should be the least of Roisin’s troubles!

New search for missing Arlene POLICE in the North are to carry out fresh searches for the body of the murdered Castlederg schoolgirl, Arlene Arkinson. Arlene was just 15 years old when she disappeared in 1994 after a night out in Bundoran, County Donegal. She would be 32 now. Convicted child-killer and rapist, Robert Howard, 77, managed to beat a murder rap, even though cops believe he is the killer. A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Investigations into Arlene’s murder are continuing. We intend to mount further searches in the coming months.” The police had been due to carry out searches for the missing teenager last January, but they were called off because of the weather. New searches will begin next month. The spokeswoman added: “Arlene’s family have been kept up to date with the plans for a new search.” Arlene Arkinson will be missing for 17 years on Saturday, 13 August. Robert Howard beat the murder rap because the jury wasn’t told he was already serving life for murdering a 14-year-old girl in London. Arlene’s family have always appealed for information on where her body is, so she can be given a Christian burial.

Conrad’s tv show postponed A TV3 Junior HeadChef series hosted by Donegal chef Conrad Gallagher has been postponed to allow him time to sort out his financial affairs. The TV station is said to be unhappy that two of the Letterkenny man’s restaurants went bust last month owing the taxman €160,000. There was also an unsavoury row over unpaid wages to members of staff at some of his restaurants. Junior Head Chef was to have featured up and coming cooks aged between 13 and 18. It was due to be broadcast this autumn but unhappy television executives have postponed the show until 2012 to allow Gallagher to sort his financial affairs. Salon de Saveurs in Dublin and Conrad’s Kitchen in Sligo both closed down last month. It is understood employees of both claim they are owed wages. The top chef - a former Michelin star award winner - continues to operate the Dining Room at La Stampa in Dublin. A TV3 source told us: “The relationship between us and Conrad is fine, but we do have concerns over some of the bad publicity surrounding him in recent weeks. “It was felt that it would be better to postpone the next Junior series to allow for some outstanding matter to be resolved.”

Gardai planning to interview seven suspects in alleged Donegal paedo ring GARDAI have expanded their investigations into child sex abuse allegations in west Donegal to include up to seven suspects. Detectives are also planning to re-interview convicted paedophile Michael Ferry. A number of men in the Gweedore area who claim they were sexually abused when they were boys have made statements to gardai in recent days. Some of the allegations date back to the early 1980s. Detectives are piecing together all the allegations and cross-checking claims against suspects in the case. They are also reinterviewing victims of convicted paedophile Michael Ferry, the school caretaker jailed for 14 years last month. The 56-year-old, who pleaded guilty to 38 sample charges, is to be interviewed again about his crimes and his association with a number of other suspects. “Ferry himself could hold the key to unlocking the dark secrets behind this affair,” a source said. “He will be interviewed again by detectives about his role and the alleged role of others in these sickening attacks on young boys. “He pleaded guilty when confronted with the allegations, but frankly he had attacked so many boys over the years, he wasn’t even sure himself how many victims there were.” Ferry’s imprisonment last month related to crimes committed against four boys. He had a previous conviction in 2002 for a sex attack on another man in Gweedore in the mid-1980s. Serious sexual assault allegations have been made against a man who has connections to two of the men at the centre of the Gweedore investigations. When the allegations were first made in the mid-1990s, a parish priest led an investigation and concluded that six boys who made the allegations against the man had fabricated them. “The parents were dismissed out of hand at the time. “In the end four boys left the school. The DPP concluded there was insufficient evidence for a prosecution,” said a source. However this inquiry has been re-opened and we understand a number of new allegations have been made in recent days. Gardai believe this case is ‘inextricably linked’ to the Gweedore allegations. Meanwhile two men who were arrested earlier this week by gardai in Gweedore have been released without charge pending further inquiries. A number of items were seized for forensic examination.

Runners to put some fun into Danny McDaid 15k IT was once the preserve of the elite runners – but now the Danny McDaid 15k is to have a fun run element too. The 7th annual Danny McDaid 15k road race-fun run in association with The Station House Hotel, will take place in Letterkenny on Sunday, August 14, and it promises to be the best event to date. Last year up to 200 runners went to the line for the prestigious event and organisers are hoping they will yet more participants this year. The event was formally launched on Tuesday at the premises of the main sponsor, The Station House Hotel. The winner of the race last year was Ciaran Doherty in a time of 49.19. The Danny McDaid 15k is one of the highlights of the racing calendar and attracts top
runners from all over the country. However, the organisers are also hoping people will come out and jog around the course which runs from the town out around New Mills and Rashedogue before finishing back in town via Conwal. The event is run in honour of double Olympian and LAC club stalwart, Danny McDaid who competed in the 1972 and 1976 Olympics for Ireland in Berlin and Melbourne. Speaking at the launch, LAC Chairman, Gerry Davenport, said the event has been growing in popularity ever year since its inception. “The Danny McDaid 15k carries a special aura and appeal for all runners. It is a top event on the local racing calendar but we’re also appealing to people to come out and
just run the course. It is a great race and the numbers are growing every year,” he said. “We’re delighted to have The Station House as our main sponsor for the race. Speaking at the launch, Mr Brian Gallagher, Proprietor of The Station House Hotel said he was delighted to be involved with the event. “Danny McDaid is a household name across the country. LAC is a great club and fosters great young talent. As a local businessman I’m always delighted to help out in any way I can.,’ he said. The race begins at 11.30am and registration will take place in Aura Leisure Centre from 10 am. There will be a host of category prizes including top prizes for the first man and woman across the line.
How sky tv rips off its Donegal customers INVESTIGATION: SKY TV are on a sales drive in Co Donegal this week - and no wonder....they’re making a small fortune! That’s because customers here are paying through the nose for a service which costs much less just across the Border in Co Derry. For example a Donegal customer signing up to the Sky+ with Sports Bundle will have to fork out a whopping €59 per month. You will also have to pay €49 for the Sky+ box But in Derry the same package costs just £37 (£31.50) each month. The Sky+ box is FREE and there’s £25 Marks & Spencer voucher AND free broadband and weekend and evening telephone calls. In the North every single Sky package is cheaper. And when you want to add HD to your package, it costs an extra £10.25 (€11.85). Here in Donegal it’s €15. Sky Ireland has been boasting about freezing it’s prices in the Republic until 2013. And little wonder....they can afford to! They’re already fleecing customers here in Donegal by charging up to 30% more than customers in the North. Sky - whose motto is Believe In Better - can take up to €250 more a year off a Donegal customer for an inferior service compared to customers in the North. Are you being ripped off? Email us to editor@getitweekly.ie
Two people rescued from Muckish A couple and their dog were rescued from Muckish Mountain. The couple made an emergency phonecall to the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team at around 6.30am and were rescued at 8.30am.
The couple were cold and wet but were not injured. The Donegal Mountain Rescue Team has reported a 70% increase in call-outs so far this year.

McGarrigles Shoes Hardhitting RTE show reveals shame of Donegal’s drivers
The last thing your child needs to worry about is uncomfortable shoes, because they’ll be wearing them day in, day out, for up to eight hours a day. THE head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Donegal has declared that every road death is preventable. Inspector Michael Harrison was speaking during a hard-hitting segment on RTE’s new road traffic programme. Traffic Blues featured patrols with the Donegal Traffic Corps over two weekends in the county last October. During filming, Gardai had to contend with a variety of challenges including drunk drivers, joyriders and hit and run incidents. One segment showed a motorist form Northern Ireland reach speeds of up to 180kph in an effort to evade Gardai before fleeing across the border into Derry. The programme showed the real dangers which Gardai face on Donegal’s roads weekin, week-out. The show also highlighted how drunk driving is also still a major problem in Donegal with 17 people arrested for drunk driving during filming. The programme also showed how seriously Inspector Harrison and his team are taking road safety in Donegal.
Before you know it, it’s time for school. The last thing your child needs to worry about is uncomfortable school shoes, because they’ll be wearing them day in, day out, for up to eight hours a day. It’s important to get feet measured and buy school shoes that have been properly fitted, because their bones are not fully developed until they reach their late teens. The older children get, the more styleconscious they become but these days you don’t have to sacrifice fashion for fit. Start-rite school shoes look good and comply with school uniform regulations, as well as offering all these important features: • Stylish designs in high quality leathers ensuring great looks and durability • Whole and half sizes in up to five width fittings from D to H, to ensure best fit • Riptape fastenings to make putting
shoes on quick and convenient for kids who are in a hurry to get going • Soft and supple leather uppers to avoid rubbing, and dyed-through leather so that scuffs and scrapes will be easier to conceal with a good polish • Breathable linings for maximum comfort, allowing perspiration to escape through the surface of the shoe • Lightweight, flexible and non-slip soles in different styles, although in older children, heels should not be too high Once your child is of school age, you should check the fit of their school shoes every 3 or 4 months. Visit McGarrigles Shoes 24 Main St, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal Where your child will be measured and have a choice of school shoes to choose from.

Tornado clouds spotted over Donegal FUNNEL clouds which can cause tornadoes have been spotted over Co Donegal in the past few hours. Getit! Weekly reader Michelle Diver took these pictures near Clonmany at 11.50am today - there was a massive heavy shower shortly afterwards. Said Michelle: “We spotted funnel clouds which if they touch ground causes tornadoes. It was incredible.” An expert at irishweatheronline said: “Funnel clouds are condensation funnels extending from the base of a towering cumulus or Cb, associated with a rotating column of air that is not in contact with the ground. “Funnel clouds become confirmed tornadoes when they touch the ground. “Clonmany’s location next to the sea offers the possibility that the feature may have been a water spout. These features, which are more
commonly associated with tropical or subtropical waters, are small, relatively weak rotating columns of air over water beneath a Cb or towering cumulus cloud.” He added: “There has been a significant increase in funnel sightings across Ireland during 2011 with confirmed sightings. While conditions have been more conducive for such developments in recent weeks, Irish Weather Online (IWO) believes advancements in mobile phone camera technology along with an increasing awareness of funnel clouds have contributed to the spike in reported funnel cloud sightings. “This might be construed by some as signs of climate change while others might see the event as another display of Mother Nature’s unpredictable behaviour. The reality, however, is that this weather phenomenon is not new to Ireland.”

Greencastle Baked Cod Gratin Don’t be afraid of the word Gratin it simply means sauce with cheese and browned under the grill. This dish is a stress free dish ideal for dinner party as the dish in which it is cooked in is the dish you serve it in. Be careful though with this recipe as Cod can be very delicate and has a tendency to crumble if cooked too long. Serves: 4
Ingredients 600g Cod or haddock fillet skinned 300 ml milk 1 tsp cayenne pepper Pinch Nutmeg freshly ground black pepper 1 head broccoli, cut into florets 6 Fresh Chives 150g parmesan cheese, grated
Brian’s Tips Make little ramekin size portions as a starter. Add some cooked Penne pasta for a balanced meal. Smoked Haddock works excellent also with this recipe. Method Preheat the oven to 200°C In a saucepan, heat the milk, cayenne pepper, nutmeg. Season, with freshly ground black pepper. Fold the Haddock fillets into 4 neat portions. Add the broccoli and fish to the pan and simmer for five minutes or until Broccoli is nearly cooked. Lift the broccoli and fish out with and place into a small ovenproof dish.Spoon over 2-3 tablespoons of the milk mixture and sprinkle over the grated cheese and chopped chives. Discard the remaining milk mixture. Bake in the oven for 6 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden-brown.

Daniel – I thought mum was going to have a row with Prince Charles
Part of historic ditched Donegal spitfire wings its way back to Derry The wheel of a crashed Spitfire that lay buried in Donegal bogland for almost 70 years has finally touched down back at its home base. The RAF Second World War fighter plane was raised from the ground earlier this year after being found preserved in clay on an isolated Inishowen hillside at Moneydarragh. Flown by American pilot Roland “Bud” Wolfe, it had taken off from RAF Eglinton in November 1941 a short distance across the border in Northern Ireland on a patrol mission. But Pilot Officer Wolfe was forced to bail out and abandon the plane after the engine overheated, leaving it to crash into the rugged Inishowen peninsula. The crash caused a diplomatic in-
cident, with the 23-year-old Nebraska man briefly held in an internment camp in the neutral Republic of Ireland, only to escape weeks later and catch the train from Dublin over the border to Belfast. The lack of oxygen in the clay bog where his plane ended up protected it from the passage of time and the wreck, recovered a few weeks ago by an archaeological team, is now bound for a museum in Derry. But in a symbolic gesture, the tailwheel of the Mark IIa Spitfire P8074 has been given to City of Derry Airport, where the plane’s RAF 133 (Eagle) squadron was based during the war. Mr Wolfe went on to serve in Korea and Vietnam, dying in 1994 as a
retired lieutenant colonel. His daughters Barbara Kucharczyk and Betty Wolfe thanked the team in Ireland for recovering his plane. “We know that Bud Wolfe did not attribute political or even historical significance to his military career, nor to his life experiences,” they wrote in a letter. “However, he loved flying and appreciated the Spitfire above all other aircraft he flew. “We feel certain that he would be stoically ecstatic to heft the tail wheel, lay hands on the propeller, tinker with the Rolls Royce engine, and maybe slip on the flying gear when no-one was watching. He would respect your efforts and salute them, as do we.”

DANIEL O’Donnell has revealed how he was terrified his mother was going to have an argument with Prince Charles when he went to receive his MBE. The Kincasslagh singer, 49, revealed how he and his family travelled to the London Embassy in Dublin to receive his MBE. However Daniel says that because his mum Julia was a huge fan of the late Princess Diana, he was afraid she was going to speak out of turn. “I was terrified she would say something because she was a huge fan of Princess Diana. “At the time Prince Charles was not officially seeing Camilla but it had been rumoured. “I was afraid mum was going to say something to Charles about
Diana. In the end all she said was that she wrote to his two children when their mother died and nothing else.. “He said he appreciated it very much,” revealed Daniel. Daniel opened his heart to RTE host Gay Byrne on Friday night’s TV show ‘For One Night Only.’ Daniel spoke about a range of topics including his love for wife Majella, how he worships Cliff Richard and even how he encountered an inner peace while visiting Medjugorje. He also sang many of his hit songs including I Wanna Dance With You.

Younger priests are afraid to come out in public in Donegal
A leading priest has revealed how younger priests in Co Donegal are afraid to be seen in public because of the recent child abuse scandals. Fr Paddy Dunne, communications officer with the Diocese of Raphoe, said young clerics are facing a very difficult time. “I know of some younger priests who are afraid to come out or to be seen in public. They stay at home. “I know priests in Dublin who have been spit on because they were recognized as priests but thankfully that has not happened here. “Some of the younger priests in Donegal feel ashamed because of what has happened in the past – the abuse. “It’s a shame because these younger lads didn’t know any of this stuff was going on and have no responsibility for it,” he said. Fr Dunne admits the church is facing a “doomsday scenario” with a decrease in the numbers of priests in Donegal. A number of parishes including Drumkeen and Drumoghill
already do not have a priest because of a shortage in numbers. Fr Dunne said that such parishes will not have a fulltime priest because of the shortage and due to the fact that a number of priests are overseas. “We definitely do not have the numbers of priests we used to have and we do not have the same numbers coming in. “It’s definitely going to be a problem in the future. It’s very difficult for people because they are used to having a priest living among them as a member of their community,” he said. Some of the country’s most notorious paedophile priests came from Donegal including Fr Eugene Green. Fr Dunne said he does not know the extent of sexual abuse which was carried out by priests in the Diocese of Raphoe in the past. “I can only presume that all of that information will come out in the audits. “I do know that Bishop Boyce handed over all the files. There is always the possibility that some details may not have been handed over. “But if people know anything then they can contact the commission (on child abuse),” he said.
Sunken Spanish Armada vessel found off Donegal
UNDERWATER archaeologists believe they may have discovered a sunken Spanish Armada vessel off the Donegal coast. Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan has announced State funding for an excavation of the wreck at Rutland Sound near Burtonport. The evidence recovered so far indicates that the vessel, which is lying in relatively shallow water, is from the 16th Century and part of the 1588 expedition. Minister Deenihan described the discovery as ‘a major find of significance not only to Ireland but also to the international archaeological, historical and maritime communities’.
He added: ‘It could provide huge insight into life on board and the reality of the military and naval resources available to the Armada campaign.’ Junior Minister Dinny McGinley has described the find as very exciting and says it could have all sorts for potential for the local area.
Bar owner’s fury after another crash outside his premises A Letterkenny bar owner has said it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt after yet ANOTHER car crash outside his premises. Harry McCafferty, who owns the popular Harry’s Bar at Mountain Top, has been calling for traffic-calming measures outside his premises for over a year. In the latest smash a car and a jeep collided but thankfully nobody was seriously hurt despite obvious dam-
age to both vehicles. One of the vehicles was turning into Mr McCafferty’s premises when it was “t-boned’ by another car which was in the overtaking lane coming from Letterkenny. The Gardai were called and carried out a full investigation of the crash. There were three children in the back of the jeep but thankfully none of them were hurt. The latest crash comes a year after another similar crash outside of Mr McCafferty’s
bar. The N56 road, which was only upgraded and open two years ago, is one of the busiest into and out of Letterkenny. He said he feels it is only a matter of time before an even more serious accident. “The frequency of this type of accident is increasing and I’m quite sure it is literally only a matter of time before there is someone seriously hurt - or worse. “Anyway, the NRA are not interested in doing anything about it,” he said.
Tv star prepares in Donegal for famine horror ahead TV presenter Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh has spent the weekend in Donegal with her family - ahead of a trip most people wouldn’t want to make. The brave celebrity wanted to spend a relaxing few days with her relatives because next week she flies to see the horror of famine ravaging countries in the Horn of Africa. Most people know Blathnaid from her various telly shows including the AllIreland Talent Show. But she also works tirelessly for the super third world charity Plan Ireland. And next week she goes to Ethiopia to see the famine horror for herself. “I spent the weekend with my family in Donegal trying to be normal,” said Blathnaid. “My eight-year-old asked if he could come. When I explained that it would
be hard and sad he said: “Mum, I don’t get scared like you. ‘Voldemort’ doesn’t scare me”. “I won’t deny that I am scared. I have been to Zimbabwe where I saw the cruelty of Aids and played with children who are HIV positive and are left with elderly grandparents to care for them I have visited orphanages in Romania where children were fed but neglected of any care or attention, which in itself is a death sentence. “This will be ten times worse. Thousands of women and children already starving.” Plan Ireland is a superb international charity. People here can ‘adopt’ children in many third world countries, ensuring that many get food and education. If you want to help, please log on to www.plan.ie

What next for Donegal’s economy
THEY have called to a number of retail outlets in recent days to check on the identities of staff and to make sure those being employed are registered for tax. The investigators have also done the same at a number of restaurants and hotels in what is the biggest clampdown on
businesses here ever. Revenue sources have revealed that they have detected a number of crimes in the past few days. And in another development, the Revenue is also checking premises which they believe are being rented but where tax on those rents have not been

declared by landlords. “You could say it is a blitz,” said one Revenue source.“There is a massive black economy in Co Donegal and we are determined to clamp down on it where and when we can. “This may be seen by some people as harsh but the fact is there are a large number of relatively well-off people in our community who are avoiding tax in every way they can. “One of those is employing people for cash payment. That deprives that person of proper employment rights and it deprives the Government of taxes, taxes which are badly needed right now.” The source admitted they had received numerous tipoffs from members of the public. “This is an ongoing operation and we are acting on good information in most cases,” revealed the source. “However we also have the power to carry out random checks on businesses and that has been pretty successful.” Asked what he personally thought of business owners who bent the rules, he said: “As far as I’m concerned anyone who cheats on their taxes is a criminal and a thief. “Look at Letterkenny General Hospital where money is needed for basic services. People who cheat on their taxes are stealing from them.”

theme of nutrition and look at another of the energy supplying nutrients, protein. As with carbohydrates, proteins perform a highly specialized function in the body. Proteins are made up of amino acids, of which there are twenty types. These amino acids combine to create a plethora of different proteins, all of which serve similar functions, but in a slightly different sense. Of these twenty amino acids, nine cannot be made in the body in sufficient quantities and these are called essential amino acids. The non-essentials are equally as important despite the misleading name, it is just that the essential amino have to come from a food source. Therefore, it is essential that we eat enough protein for the body to have all the amino acids that we require to create the proteins that the body needs.
LAST week we had a look at carbohydrates and their function in the body, and hopefully simplified the subject. What was clear was that they were absolutely necessary, and form an essential part of a balanced diet. Today we are going to remain on the
Why, you might ask? What happens if we don’t have enough proteins? Well the functions that the proteins have are vital. Some proteins function as building materials for the body. The structure of the bodily cells require protein and it is used to build skin, muscles, hair and fingernails. The protein collagen forms the matrix for the bones, teeth, ligaments and tendons, and significantly it repairs tissues. Therefore if we have insufficient protein it will stunt our growth process and disable our ability to recover from lacerations, cuts and bruises. Osteoporosis, weak bones and teeth are other by-products of a lack of protein. So we can see that it is important.

IT’S OFFICIAL – DONEGAL PEOPLE ARE THE BRAINIEST IN IRELAND! IT’S what we all suspected – Donegal people are the brainiest in Ireland. Well that’s according to boffins at Oxford University in England. They claim that the further people live from the equator, the more grey matter they have. The findings mean that people who live in Malin Head can claim to be the smartest of all! The boffins also claim that bigger brains are required to assist with vision in poor light and help people cope with gloomier weather. And judging by this summer’s lack of sunshine, it’s just as well we live in Donegal.
Proteins also act as enzymes. Enzymes are elements in the body that catalyze or speed up the chemical processes in the body, ensuring that our finely balanced system runs smoothly. About half the proteins that we eat are used to make new enzymes. Other proteins are hormones, which are the bodies messengers. The hormones race around the body turning on and off the body processes in response to its needs, and proteins are found in insulin, thyroid hormone, histamine, adrenaline and serotonin. Proteins are also carriers and transporters and help carry nutrients across cell walls, for example the protein haemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the body cells ensuring that we have enough to function. Along with this the proteins also help to maintain the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. Proteins are antibodies that function to help the body defend from disease. Proteins are crucial to wound healing, blood clotting and have a big part to play in vision. Finally proteins provide energy. After the carbohydrates protein is the second source that the body will turn to to gain its energy.
Phew!! That’s a lot of facts. I am not expecting any of the readers to remember or even necessarily understand all of that of which I have just referred to. What is the aim is that it is clearly understood that protein is very very important to the body, as is carbohydrates, and should remain a part of a balanced diet. Our bodies are magnificent creations and the fine balance that is present to ensure that we operate and function needs our help, so be sensible and good to it and it will be good to you.

Season of mists…
et ready to indulge yourself this autumn with sumptuous clarets and burgundies mixed with tweeds, furs and feathers. The shops are marking the end of the bright, playful summer with earthy clothes that have a hint of masculinity about them: loose trousers in muddy browns, severe greys and rusty reds; flat shoes and chunky boots; expensive cloths layered with hardwearing tweed and decadent furs; and unashamedly clashing colours.
River Island’s A/W collection includes sharp trousers and doublebreasted jackets that can be combined with fake furs for an androgynous look that taps into another trend, that of mixing textures – the more the merrier. Marks and Spencer shows how to mix it up with its fluffy, deep orange coat draped over a gold velvet dress finished with a patchwork of contrasting sequins. For a more feminine approach to autumn there are plenty
of dresses inspired by the 1940s that perfectly complement the many tweed coats available, as can be seen at F&F at Tesco. Printed fabrics are everywhere, from birds to flowers to butterflies (New Look has piles of pretty printed dresses to choose from), with a big sub-trend proving to be dots. Lots of them. Our current favourite, however, is Matalan’s very sweet dotted dress – snap it up now before it sells out.

Camera Tip
Nintendo 3DS Straight out of the box the 3ds is packed with software that’s been pre installed to the device such as the new home menu which is a in game menu opened by pressing the home button located between the start and select buttons at the bottom of the console this allows you to pause the game and search the web if your stuck on a level you just cant complete, you can update your system and connect to a wireless Internet connection, just like the xbox 360 and PS3 you can go into your friends list from this menu to send a message and invite them to a multiplayer game, this is a great improvement on the original DS that was released by Nintendo, with an newly designed and very user friendly interface which will get any gamer where they want to go in Meir seconds. The 3ds’s camera has cutting edge technology and can take 3d pictures with nintendo’s camera application which has basic image adjustment features, with the all new support for SD cards you can easily transport these to your computer or even another 3ds! create photo galleries and themes with this awesome application. Just like the Wii you can create your own mii’s so you can be even more a part of the game your playing and you can share this with the all new “street-pass” which allows players to exchange data between consoles such as high scores Mii characters while passing on the street, players can control what data they want to be available to other consoles. also with the added feature of the 3d camera it can generate a mii to match your photo in seconds! so there’s no more need to spend ages setting up your mii and can get straight onto playing your favorite games. Another new application that they have released straight to the console is Nintendo eShop so you can buy all your favorite Nintendo games and even discover some classics you may have never played before, this is similar to the xbox 360s arcade marketplace, which allows account holders to buy “arcade games” for a small price classic games such as Super Mario Land will sometimes have a reduced price and be in the Nintendo eShop “Sale” section allowing you to grab a bargain. The 3ds sound application allows you to turn the 3ds into a mp3 player and lets you play your music from a removable SD card unfortunately it only supports MP3 and itunes favorite AAC format (the most popular types) and with the built in microphone you can record sounds and create your own music. Another feature that is also available on other consoles is System transfer, this will allow you to transfer all your game saves and purchases from the eStore to another or a new 3ds. this is a very nice feature en siring that you wont need to shell out to buy all the pre purchased stuff from the eStore if your 3ds breaks or if your upgrading from the original ds lite. The main and best feature about this console is that it is a hand held 3d device! that doesn’t need any special glasses, just your eyes and a nifty little 3d depth slider allows you to control the amount of 3D on the screen and it can be turned to 2d any time you like, also to aid the new 3d screen Nintendo have added motion sensors and gyro sensors, so like the ipod touch and iPhone some games can be controlled by just tilting and moving the console itself while delivering amazing graphics this new feature will help bring allot of popular games from the iPhone to the 3ds and with the 3d screen there is a potential for new games using both these new features that were not previously possible. Other features Nintendo has added is its backwards compatible to the original ds and ds lite, so this means you can play all your old ds games on the new 3ds with no problems and a “telescopic” stylus so its suited to children and adult hands so its more comfortable to the user. the added support for 3d sd cards will help bring so much more to the 3ds because now you can play your favorite music and watch your favorite videos all on the move. the 3d camera can be incorporated in some games to project an image in real time space and allow your to interact with it, weather it be a pet or an alien invasion right in your living room! This technology has opened the door to so much more this 2011 will be an amazing year for gadgetry and portable games consoles.
Vibrance vs. Saturation in Plain English FIRST, I’ll give you some definitions and the we’ll look closer at the difference made on a shot. {Saturation} Saturation is a uniform bumping up the intensity of all colors in your shot, regardless of the starting point of the colors. This can result in clipping (over saturation of certain colors which results in loss of detail in those areas) and over saturation of skin tones leaving them looking too orange and unnatural. {Vibrance} Vibrance is a smart-tool which cleverly increases the intensity of the more muted colors and leaves the already well-saturated colors alone. It’s sort of like fill light, but for colors. Vibrance also prevents skin tones from becoming overly saturated and unnatural. See the below example made in Lightroom:

In the middle shot, the saturation was turned up to +50 and you can see what the red bricks have gotten a tad out of control. Too red in my opinion. But when I turned the vibrance up +50 instead, Lightroom already saw that the red was very red but that the grass could use a bump (a bit of ‘fill color’ if you will). I think that the bottom edit is much more reasonable than the shot edited with added saturation.

How to Fix a Computer Virus
www.getitweekly.ie
Harte calls for new ‘fix-it’ scheme to be rolled out in Donegal THE new fixyourstreet.ie website, which allows the public to directly report problems like potholes, graffiti, and broken streetlights to their local authority, needs to be rolled out in Donegal as soon as possible. That’s the view of Senator Jimmy Harte who said the scheme could be a real benefit to the people of the county. “I look forward to seeing it introduced soon, and that if it was available in Donegal “it would show how quickly Donegal County Council and Town Councils do get work done”. “I welcome the Government initiative , fixyourstreet.ie which went live in a trial beta version last week and is currently only available in the South Dublin County area.

RECRUITMENT
It is planned to run for three months, after which it is planned to be rolled out across the State,” he said. The site allows residents to report any issues on their street online or via Twitter and promises a response to all complaints within two days. It will handle ‘non-emergency issues’ including potholes, blocked street drains, broken streetlights, and illegal dumping. “The majority of the time the public presume someone else has reported a problem in their area,” said Senator Harte. “This new site gives residents the opportunity to log their complaint. The complaint is then prioritised and can be rechecked until work has been carried out.”

FARM

Mastitis Control Make Cents! FARMERS don’t milk cows to lose money, yet that is what they are doing if they have a high somatic cell count on their farm. A recent study by Teagasc has shown that the net farm profit in a 97 cow herd with an average SCC of 250,000 is 1.3 cents per litre lower than if the same herd were producing milk with an average SCC of 150,000. If the milk price fell by this amount, there would be an outcry. Yet, this is what is happening and there are no complaints! When calculating the true cost of mastitis, it is easy to include the obvious ones but the hidden costs have to be considered too. On-Farm Costs Production losses Increased culling Higher vet bills and drug costs Discarded milk Penalties/lost bonus Stress Time & labour
Costs At Processing level Lower product yield Reduced quality Reduced shelf life Reduced market access
To lower the costs of mastitis: Tip 1: Treat effectively • Do milk cultures on affected quarters to diagnose the cause of mastitis and to decide what, if any, treatment is appropriate. Tip 2: Milk Record • Monthly milk recording costs approx. €16 per cow per year. • A 5,000 litre cow generates €1,500 milk income at 30cpl => at this price you can afford to milk record! • Monthly milk recording gives you accurate information on individual cows o Somatic Cell Count o Protein and Fat content o Milk yield • Early identification of problem cows facilities timely treatment. Tip 3: Does your milk processor pay bonuses for milk quality? • If so, they are worth aiming for! Tip 4: Reduce the stress cost of managing mastitis for you and your family • Managing mastitis increases time in the parlour, slows down milking and is frustrating. • This is difficult to measure but has an impact on the farmer and their family. What is mastitis costing you on your farm? CellCheck is currently developing a cost calculator so you can easily calculate how much money you can save by controlling mastitis. Remember Mastitis Control Makes Cents!
There are five key components to good canine communication. • Food, • Danger, • The Walk, • Rejoining & Affection, • Leadership through play, For this issue I will cover food as this is an area of major importance Food. When we talk about food, what are the similarities between us and our dogs? Quite simply, the dogs relationship to food is completely
Teagasc Forestry focuses on Felling Licences and Stack Measurement at Tullamore Show Teagasc and the Forest Service will have a major stand in the Forest & Energy Section of the Tullamore Show 2011 on Sunday, 14 August. The Tullamore Show which takes place at the Butterfield Estate near Tullamore, Co. Offaly, is Ireland’s largest one day agricultural show within excess of 50,000 visitors expected to attend. At the Forest & Energy Section, visitors will be able to visit an Indoor Exhibition area, an Outdoor Trade Stand section and a Demonstration area: • A wide range of forestry and renewable energy companies will be represented. • Live demonstrations will take place throughout the day, displaying dif-
different to ours apart from, if we don’t eat we die, that’s it, everything else is completely different. We have regular mealtimes because our lives are run by the clock. The canine eats when they can because they can never be sure when they will eat again. The leader eats first , takes the best bits, and also dictates in which order and how much the other pack members eat, This is one of the strongest signals you can give to your dog, and also one of the easiest to do. When the humans in the pack eat, it is nothing to do with the dog, But when we feed our dogs it is vital that they understand that food comes courtesy of the leader i.e. That the leader has control over the food .When I talk about eating first I mean a grape, a slice of apple a small biscuit but not dog food!! Prepare your dogs food in full view. When its ready you have “priority of feeding “. Take your chosen item of food from the plate and pop it in your mouth and eat it, with no eye contact, you must do this naturally, there must be no yum yum yum etc. As soon as you have finished your nibble, place your dogs food on the floor and walk away with out any speech,
ferent aspects of modern forestry and the production of quality timber products and crafts. This area has always proven to be very popular to all visitors as large forest machinery can be seen and heard in action on the day. The Teagasc forestry stand will focus this year on Felling Licences and Stack Measurement; Felling Licences Thinning is now taking place in many farm forests, planted during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Before any felling takes place, it is necessary to have a felling licence in place. Two types of felling licences exist, a Limited Felling Licence
there is no need for sit , wait , gimme the paw or perform any other party trick as this is a human perception of control . By walking away you are giving the message I had my fill you get what’s left. Remember to stay in the room where you can keep an eye on things, your dog will do one of four things. 1) Go straight to the bowl and eat everything i.e. wolf it down and this is ideal. If danger now threatens and he has to leave the area he has food in his belly which improves his survival odds, Dogs are designed to eat in one sitting, they are not designed to graze. 2) It may be that when you place the bowl on the floor your dog just glances at it and walks away as if to say “whatever” The signal he is giving you is “ leave it there, When I want to then ill eat, because the Alpha eats when he likes, as much as he likes “ 3) He may go to his bowl, eat a mouthful or two and then walk away; this option is very similar to option 2. He wants a food bowl down as a status symbol but is also a bit hungry so has a quick snack first .
and a General Felling Licence. The Teagasc Forestry stand will have advice on how to complete the appropriate Felling Licence application. Stack Measurement While thinning is being carried out, it is important to be able to accurately measure how much timber is being removed from the forest. There are many ways of doing this. One of the best methods is Stack Measurement, which can be an accurate means for a forest owner to calculate the volume of timber that has been removed from his/her forest, once the full procedure is carried out correctly. The Teagasc stand will demonstrate how this procedure can be done.
4) This behaviour is a slightly more unusual…. In which the dog takes food from the bowl, takes it to where the humans are and drops it on the floor in front of them and then eats while trying to make eye contact. An even more extreme version of this behaviour can be displayed by a dog that fills their cheeks pouches, then they get right in the humans face and eat, the powerful message this dog is giving out is, SEE!! I am in control of the food. If any option other than one is taken as soon as the dog deserts his bowl, pick it up at once. He must not get fed again until next feed time (that includes food rewards). Will he be hungry? YES! Will he die? NO. Will he have learnt a huge lesson? Oh Yes. Fresh water should always be available. Note!! Please don’t ever put a dog in a position where you approach it while it is eating, this is a really silly thing to do, Look at this from the dogs view, The dog is having a meal and you are approaching as a subordinate begging for a morsel, you will get a telling off if you do this to the wrong dog!!!

Opel Ampera On Route To Ireland
OPEL has confirmed the Ampera is scheduled to enter production later this year and be available in Ireland in 2012. The five-door, four-seat Ampera is designed to provide all the benefits of an electric vehicle while eliminating the range anxiety associated with the reliance on battery power alone. The revolutionary Opel Ampera will be the first emission-free, electrically driven car in Europe suitable for everyday driving. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Ampera eliminates range anxiety. It gives drivers the confidence and peace of mind that a depleted battery will not strand them. The battery is recharged in about four hours at 230V by plugging the vehicle’s on-board charge system into a standard household outlet. Because the battery can be recharged conveniently, without the need for special charging equipment, most Amperas are likely to be driven in battery mode all the time. Independent research shows that
around 80 percent of Europeans drive less than 60 kilometres per day, so the Ampera easily meets their requirements. For the first 40 - 80 kilometres (depending on terrain, driving style, and temperature), power is supplied by the electricity stored in the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. While driving on electricity delivered by the battery, the Ampera operates free of petrol and tailpipeemissions. If a longer trip is required, the petrol-fueled engine can seamlessly extend the total driving range to more than 500 kilometres on a full tank. This full-performance, range-extending technology positions the Ampera as the first electric car with the everyday convenience of a conventional car. There are four drive modes from HoldCharge to Sports mode for efficiency and driving fun. We will detail the characteristics of each mode in a full preview closer to the Irish launch date. Expected prices are set to be around â‚Ź40,000.

BURT The senior hurlers booked their place in the Ulster League Division 3 Final on Sunday after beating Antrim’s Clooney Gaels 4-21 to 4-8 in Maghera. Burt started the semi-final in great fashion hitting 1-3 without reply before Clooney Gaels pulled
a goal back. However Burt claimed another goal themselves and with twenty minutes gone led by 2-8 to 1-2. A ten minute period before halftime saw Burt lose shape and concede two goals in quick succession. Half-time score: Burt 2-10, Clooney Gaels 3-4. The sun came out for the second half, and with the ground becoming less slippery and greasy, Burt upped their tempo and work rate to surge ahead. There was some great points preceded by superb passages of play as players became more comfortable on the ball. Next up for the senior hurlers is a home championship match against Setanta on Wednesday week. Good luck to the team and management. The senior footballers get back to action this week when they travel to Buncrana on Wednesday for a
league match. Throw-in is 7.30pm. The reserve game is at 6.15pm. On Sunday, the footballers play Naomh Padraig Muff in the Junior Championship quarter-final at Ture. The U16 hurlers had a comfortable win over Carn last Tuesday in the league and on Thursday they played out a draw with Buncrana. The Buncrana game saw the rare sight of Burt and Donegal senior hurling team-mates Joe Boyle and Stevie Boyle in opposite dug-outs. Perhaps a draw was a fair result so no man had bragging rights in the changing room! This Thursday they are away to St Eunans. The U12 hurlers were beaten by Buncrana last Thursday. It was their first defeat of the season and despite Buncrana winning well on the scoreline, Burt put up well on the field but they just couldn’t find
the scores to stay in touch. With both teams missing a number of regulars, hopefully the two sides will meet again later in the season with a full lineout. This Thursday they are home to St Eunans. The U14 footballers play Glenfin in the NB Championship shield semi-final this Wednesday in Glenfin. Sean McHugh will be in contact. The U13 ½ football match v Moville has been switched from this Tuesday to Friday to accommodate the U14 footballers. Again Sean McHugh will be in contact about details. U13/14 football training is on Saturday mornings at Hibernian Park from 10.30 -12 noon. Please remember to bring your water bottle for hygiene reasons. Anyone that has lotto cards or who sells lottos for the club, please remember to hand them into your coach at training. The U8 Hurling and Football Academy is on Monday nights in Hibernian Park, Burt. Training starts from 6pm to 7.30pm. Any new players/members are welcome. Can parents please send lunch/drink with their child for the mid-session break. If anybody has any questions, please feel free to contact any of the coaches at anytime. The coaches and their numbers: Martin McGrath - 087 7431332; Rory Grant - 087 7763668; Benny Harrigan 086 8670070; Johnny Downey - 086 3066874. Finally, the club and team managers extend a warm invitation for any parents that would like to help out the coaches at these sessions in any way. All help no matter how big or small is greatly appreciated! U10 hurling training is on Monday nights from 6-7.30. U10 football training is on Saturday afternoons from 12-1.15pm. Training is subject to changes depending on matches. CARNDONAGH Senior Football: Carndonagh 1-11, Aodh Ruadh Beal Atha Seanaigh 0-09. The Carn team were impressive as they outplayed Aodh Ruadh last Sunday in Foden to win this important League fixture. Indeed the margin could have been much greater if players had converted all their scoring chances. However, this was a top rate team performance, where players, individually and collectively gave their total commitment. Aodh Ruadh started the stronger scoring 2 points before Dermot McGonagle, playing at wing back
NEWS 2-6
scored his first of two points for Carn. Dermot’s solo runs from his defensive line delighted the home crowd all afternoon. Aodh Ruadh scored another point before Pádraig Doherty, scored Carn’s second point. The boys from Ballyshannon scored two more points before Carn’s midfield pairing of Gerard Doherty (K) and Oliver McConologue registered a point each. Both players had outstanding games with Oliver showing true grit in the tussle for possession at midfield. The half time score was Carn 0-04; Aodh Ruadh; 0-05. After the break Ballyshannon went 2 points up before Donnacha Gallagher got his first point of the game. The game was close to stalemate when Michael McLaughlin (M), made an athletic dive in the square to punch the ball into the net. Carn had taken the lead for the first time in the game and never looked back after. Pádraig Doherty, whose relentless running opened up the gaps in the opposition defence, scored point number six for Carn. Donnacha Gallagher, Carn’s top scorer this season, scored 3 more points. Ryan Davenport displayed his turn of speed when he embarked on a solo run late on to score a fine point. While the forwards were dictating the game up front, the Carn backs played their part and Aodh Ruadh could only score two more points in the second half. Rory Ward had his best game to date, making a number of telling interceptions. Carn are still at the bottom of the League table on 6 points. Milford and Downings are on 8 points. However, Carn can improve their position if they continue to play the football that they are capable of, the last two victories over Urris and Aodh Ruadh is proof of that. The team and scorers were; Gerard Crossan, Ronan O’Connor, Gerry Simpson, Michael Nelson, Dermot McGonagle (0-02), Paddy Nelson, Rory Ward, Gerard Doherty (K), Oliver McConologue, Michael McLaughlin (M)(1-00), Donnacha Gallagher (0-04), Pádraig Doherty (0-02), Ryan davenport (0-01), Declan O’Donnell, Dominic Doherty (K), Conor Doherty, Cathal Doherty, Tiarnan Coyne, Reserve Football: Carndonagh 1-04, Aodh Ruadh 4-13. The reserve team, who had been entertaining the supporters all season with some fine football, had an off day last Sunday in Foden. From the start they appeared sluggish and off the pace. On the other hand Aodh Ruadh were quicker to the ball and the more eager side. The damage was done in the first half, Aodh Ruadh scored 3 goals. The team and scorers were; Shane Gibbons, Conor McDonough, John Taitt, Aidan O’Callaghan, Kevin Kelly, Paddy McLaughlin, Ciaran O’Callaghan, Kevin Doherty, Paddy McCallion, Stephen Doherty, Sean McLaughlin (0-01), Brendan Tabb,

English and McLoone shine at national championships MARK English from Letterkenny is the toast of the county after winning the 800M to be crowned national champion at Santry’s Morton Stadium on Sunday. The 18-year-old Letterkenny AC athlete showed the class of a more experienced athlete to win the title. He overtook David McCarthy of Le Cheile as they entered the home straight, and then withstood all challenges to win his first senior title in a time of 1:50.22. Brian Kelly from St. Abban’s was second in 1:50.85 and Anthony Lieghio of Tallaght AC was third (1:50.88). It was another remarkable result for English. Tir Chonaill’s Mary McLoone wrote a new chapter into Donegal sporting history when she won the Long Jump and Triple Jump Jump at the National Senior Track and Field Championships in Santry over the last two days. The Glenswilly N.S.based teacher on Saturday won her first Long Jump title while on Sunday in the Triple Jump she stood on the winning podium for the 7th time - a record only matched by one of the counties greatest ever athletes Hugo Duggan who in a thirty year career won 7 Long jump titles. Ciaran Doherty, Letterkenny,3,000m Steeplechase, Teresa McGloin, FinnValley,5,000m won bronze medals while the ever improving Brendan Boyce was 4th in the 5k walk. Letterkenny’s Ruairi Finnegan and Tir Chonaill’s Karl Griffin, were part of a group honoured, and introduced to the crowd, for their outstanding performances

DONEGAL TO PLAY DUBLIN IN
SEMI-FINAL OF ALL-IRELAND SFC

DONEGAL will play Dublin in the semi-final of the All-Ireland after the Dubs beat Tyrone by seven points. The final score at Croke Park in front of 53,000 fans was Dublin 0-22, Tyrone 0-15. Dublin’s manager Pat Gilroy said he hadn’t even thought of Donegal yet. Speaking after the victory over Tyrone, he said: “We’ve seen it from a distance because we were keeping an eye on this game this evening. “We’re just delighted to be in an All-Ireland semi-final. Jim McGuinness has done an incredible job with Donegal this season. I think they’ve lost just one game all season.” Dublin were impressive - though they were cynical at times too with some dodgy tackles throughout. Tyrone just looked tired. RTE pundit Joe Brolly, the former Derry star, insisted: “Dublin will find it very very hard to beat Donegal.” The downside to today’s result means we will have to listen to a load of auld rubbish from the Dublin media between now and the last weekend of August. Bring on the Dubs...we beat them in 92...we can beat them again.
