Cover Story GARDAÍ have issued an appeal to owners of vacant properties to ensure they are well secured and have asked members of the public to immediately contact them if they witness any suspicious activity. A two-storey house on the main Buncrana to Derry road near Burnfoot was gutted on Saturday around 5am. Later that afternoon crazed arsonists tried to torch the former dispensary building used by the Health Service Executive at the entrance to Inch Island, and an attempt was made to burn a house on the island. Earlier on Friday, firemen tackled a blaze at a farmhouse at Magheranture on the outskirts of the town after gorse and hedging around the property was set torched. Last week two vacant houses and a caravan were burnt in three incidents at townlands close to the town. In the latter days of the previous week, St Oran’s primary school at Cockhill was damaged by fire, as was the former HSE building known as The Castle in Newtowncunningham. Close to the pier on Inch Island a barn was
set alight in which a dog was killed and thousands of euro of farm machinery was destroyed. “We believe this person or persons have to have been acting suspiciously around these vacant properties. If anyone see vehicles stopped they should try to get the registration and colour and contact gardaí quickly,” said Buncrana Supt Kevin English. “There is also the real danger that they may target a house that looks to be unoccupied but there could actually be someone there. “They are taking up the time of the fire service and gardaí when they could be called to another emergency. There is also the cost factor,” said Supt English. Buncrana fire chief James McKenna described what has been happening as a serious problem. “If this was happening in some big city you would be wondering what was going on but here it is happening in rural Ireland. It is unbelievable, and I have never seen the likes of it before. “My real fear is that someone will be killed. I appreciate the gardaí are doing their utmost to catch these people and this will hopefully happen soon as old people, living alone, are terrified,” said Mr McKenna. Tourists robbed after spate of thefts at famous Donegal landmark A number of tourists were robbed as they visited Donegal’s famous An Grianan Fort. At least FIVE cars were broken into as visitors walked around the famous site in Burt at the weekend. It is believed property including handbags was stolen during the thefts which are understood to have happened in a matter of seconds. Gardai are aware of the incident and are carrying out a full investigation into the incident. The latest robberies come after an
alarming spate of car break-ins across the county. Yesterday we revealed how people visiting graves in Stranorlar had been targeted. A woman’s car was broken into and a considerable sum of money stolen was stolen. People visiting other graveyards including Conwall in Letterkenny have also been targeted by thieves. A Garda source appealed to people not to leave valuables on display in cars.
“If there are no valuables including handbags or cameras left on display then the chances are thieves will not bother with them. “All they are interested in is breaking into the car and taking the valuables as quickly as possible. “They are not interested in breaking into a car on spec and then searching around it looking for valuables. “That takes too long – they just want to get in and out and then move away with the valuables,” he said.

HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN – almost
200 bikers turn up for unique mass
UP to 200 bikers answered the call of Donegal Fr Gerard Sweeney after he organised a special mass for bikers yesterday. The well-known Burt curate has been a motorbike enthusiast for almost seventeen years. And yesterday he chose the right road after holding a mass for dozens of motorcyclists and even blessing their machines afterwards. The motorbike-mad cleric, who drives a powerful Suzuki motorbike, held the mass at St Aengus’s Church in Burt on the Inishowen Peninsula. According to Fr Gerard, the aim of the mass was to pray for the safety of all bikers across Donegal as they take to the roads. The interdenominational service focused on remembering bikers who have died on the roads in the past 12 months – a message which was reflected in the prayers of the faithful. “We have all heard about people dying on our roads and motorcyclists are no exception.
“Many of my friends have been on to me for a long time now about holding such a mass and I am delighted we did. It was a very touching occasion. “I know first-hand how dangerous it can be for motorcyclists on the road and I wanted to highlight that. The old advert – think once, think twice, think bike’ is very true. People should remember that,” he said. He admits he does get the odd strange look when he takes off his helmet and motorbike leathers and people realize he has a priest’s collar on! Fr Sweeney, who has been a curate in the Donegal parish for just a year, revealed he first got into motorbikes seventeen years ago when a fellow priest bought him six motorbike lessons as a Christmas present. “I have been hooked ever since and I just love going out onto the open road. I have met a lot of good friends through biking,” he said. As well as blessing and remembrance service, the bikers also held a collection for the RLNI before heading off on a ride around Buncrana and Ned’s Point.

Anger grows over septic tank ‘tax on rural Donegal
THIS is the Canadian billionaire who has donated “thousands of pounds” towards the restoration of an RAF Spitfire found on a Co Donegal bog this summer. Galen Weston - married to an Irish woman - is worth €10 billion! It has emerged that the WW2 plane that crashed in Inishowen in 1941 was actually commissioned from a Stg£100,000 donation made by Mr Weston’s father, Garfield, during the Battle of Britain. Its excavation from Glenshinney bog, Moneydarragh, Gleneely, on June 28th last is said to have delighted the wealthy businessman. It is understood big-hearted Mr Weston, the founder of Penneys clothes stores, made contact with aviation historian and dig organiser, Jonny McNee to offer money to restore the fighter aircraft. Mr McNee won’t how much the billionaire had donated to Derry City Council’s museum services but said it was “thousands”.
A PROPOSED €300 Government tax on septic tanks is a tax on people living in the rural areas, politicians have said. MEP Marian Harkin and local TD Pádraig MacLochlainn were amongst those who addressed hundreds of people in Letterkenny. The fee will be paid for annual inspections of septic tanks - with the Government trying to blame the EU for the charge. Deputy MacLochlainn said: “Any suggestion that a registration charge be applied to the 30,000 homes in Donegal with septic tanks is completely unacceptable. “For this Government to take advantage of an old EU directive as a means of raising additional revenue is unfair and unjust and a tax too far.” He urged people throughout the county to lobby Fine Gael TDs Dinny McGinley and Joe McHugh to get the new tax stopped.

Campbell takes the honours at inaugural Letterkenny triathlon event It was Omagh’s Brian Campbell that took the honours ahead of Alan Mitchell in today’s event at Lake Gartan on the outskirts of Letterkenny. With the sun beating down on one of Donegal’s most scenic spots athletes from all over the northwest and further afield dipped their toes in the water of Gartan to kick off what is sure to be a calendar event for triathletes all over the country. In what were near perfect conditions for the race 110 athletes took to the water shortly after 11 o clock to get the event under way. Athletes got off to a flying start with the first individual out of the in just over 10m minutes. Once Campbell had his led he worked hard to hold onto it for the rest of the race and cross the finish line in an excellent time of just over 58 minutes. Alan Mitchell from the Letterkenny club who has had one of his best seasons in a tri suit was close on Brian’s heels throughout the day but just couldn’t get close enough to the Omagh tri club man to make his push for the top spot. Alan said “I’m happy enough with my performance; I pushed as hard as I could on the bike and run, and I
am coming of the back off three hard races in the past three weeks so I can’t really be disappointed”. Neil Walton was a minute behind Mitchell and he too has to happy with his performance on the day. In the woman’s race Eimear O Brien took the top spot in a time of 1.09.31 closely followed by Anne Paul who was in hot pursuit in a time of 1.10.25 and Margret Kelly from Letterkenny in 1.13.46.
This race too was hotly contested with the ladies fighting it out with one another throughout the race for pole position. Eimear was very happy with her performance saying that “she was delighted with her performance and it’s always nice to get a win under your belt every now again, its gives you that wee bit of extra kick and motivation the next event and the training that come with it”. As well as the performance athletes there were also a number of individuals competing against themselves and not the clock, as one athlete put it “sure it’s a bit of craic on a Saturday morning”. Councillor Dessie Larkin presented the prizes in the boathouse to competitors after the event, when all the tea sandwiches and cakes had been eaten, saying that “it was a great event that really showed the attitude of Irish people towards sport, when fathers can run and compete with sons and daughter’s can compete and run along with mothers”. It was a great event all round and the triathlon club would like to thank all individuals, companies and organisations that helped with the staging of the event, and hopes to see you all again next year.
The girl from the northwest stun x-factor judges SHE’S only a stone’s throw from Donegal but one Co Tyrone girl is set to hit the big time when she appears on the X-Factor auditions tonight. The show that makes ordinary singers overnight stars is back on our screens as Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh go in search for another singing sensation. And it looks like they may just have found one in 16 year old Janet Devlin from Gortin just outside Strabane
(that’s near Lifford folks!) She may only have used a tape recorder in her kitchen in her countryside home but Janet already sounds exactly like Ellie Goulding or Adele. Destiny Child star Kelly Rowland and Take That’s Gary Barlow can be seen swooning all over the young wannabe star. And with TV3 on the verge of being able to allow viewers to vote form Ireland this year, we are encouraging
everyone to get voting for Janet. She may not be from County Donegal, but she’s a neighbour and she has genuine talent. Remember where you heard it first when Janet is at boot camp and singing her way to the top! On TV3 (or UTV) Janet took to the stage before new judges Tulisa Contostavlos, Kelly Rowland and Gary Barlow, as well as old hand Louis Walsh, to perform a version of Ellie Goulding’s
take on Elton John’s Your Song - and got a standing ovation. Dressed in a fluffy long cardigan with letters of the alphabet knitted into it, she appears to be so nervous she has to be coaxed onstage. Judge Kelly enthuses afterwards: “You’re such a star!” Louis also reckons: “I don’t think you have any idea how good you are,” with Gary adding: “It was such a wonderful audition.”

Sick thieves target graveyard visitors SICK thieves are targeting people visiting graveyards. A number of cars have been broken into around the county in recent weeks and belongings stolen. The latest incident took place at the weekend when a woman visiting the graveyard at Drumboe in Stranorlar had her car broken into. The car window was smashed and the woman’s handbag, which contained a large amount of cash, was stolen. In recent months thieves have also targeted people visiting graveyards in Letterkenny, Buncrana and Donegal Town. A Garda source warned people not to leave valuables in cars when they are visiting graveyards.
“Thieves have cars under surveillance a lot of the time. A graveyard is the perfect place for a robbery because it’s the last place someone would suspect something like this would happen. “But thieves don’t care who or where they steal from. They observe people and know they are going to be away from their cars for a certain amount of time. “We would ask people not to leave any valuables in their cars when they are visiting graveyards. “If there are not valuables on display then the chances are that people’s cars will not be broken into,” he said. The source said he did not know if the spate of graveyard thefts was part of an organised scam.
Donegal has more convictions for brothelkeeping than Dublin Donegal has more convictions for brothel-keeping than Dublin within the past three years, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office. A total of five convictions have been secured against people operating brothels in Donegal between 2008 and 2011. A number of on-line escort agencies continue to advertise their services on behalf of young foreign national women offering sexual services in Donegal. Only recently Gardai in Letterkenny busted a brothel at Binnion Avenue. The women, who were all Romanian, appeared at Letterkenny District Court and were fined and then ordered to leave the country. Neighbouring Sligo has had nine convictions for brothel-keeping over the past three years.

Donegal tv viewers may never get RTE’s free digital network DONEGAL television viewers may never get RTE’s new digital TV network SAORVIEW, Getit! Weekly has learned. The new FREE digital network has been available to almost all of TV viewers across Ireland since May 2011. However management at RTE has now admitted that 2% of the population will not be able to access the service even after the October 2012 deadline. The new free network would have done away literally done away with the need for SKY TV. Last week we revealed how SKY are charging Donegal cus-
tomers almost 30% more for the same service here than across the border in Derry. Outraged Fianna Fail TD Charlie McConalogue fumed that once again Donegal is being left behind. “We have seen it time and time again and continue to see it with regards mobile phone coverage, broadband services and now digital television. “RTE is the national broadcaster. We pay our television licence fee to them. Therefore, we all should be getting the same service. “Having checked a number of
addresses from my constituency I can see that areas of Donegal North East will be included in the 2% which won’t get the service. “I have contacted the Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte and RTE in an effort to establish what will happen
for the 2% of the population who won’t get the service. “Although a free-to-air satellite service is being developed by RTE to make sure the entire population get the access to the digital television channels, 100% coverage must mean just that - each and every home in the
Donegal student short-listed for top digital media award A Buncrana student has been named on the shortlist for a hugely prestigious digital media award. Claire McNeilis, a final year student of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media at NUI Galway, has been named on the shortlist of the Best-inShow 2011 competition organised by The Digital Hub. Her website project - SpellingRules. ie is shortlisted under the Multimedia category. Claire, a past pupil of Crana College, developed and designed the website to explore the use of digital interactive media and computer games in literacy teaching, with regard specifically to children with dyslexia.
learn is a viable possibility not only for literacy instruction, but any subject. Dr Rod Stoneman, Director of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media congratulated Claire on her achievement. “We are thrilled for Claire and highly commend her work. In this shortlisted project, Claire highlights the way that, at present, spelling rules tend to be taught in a classroom setting in a way that is not necessarily accessible for the dyslexic student. “Her computer application explains spelling rules, presents them in a way specifically designed for dyslexic users, and allows them to practise the rules in a simple computer game
“It combines audio with written words (many of the problems that dyslexic people have with reading and spelling stem from a phonological processing deficit).” The website demonstrates that interactive media can be used to help children with dyslexia to learn spelling rules in a way that is primarily self-directed and enjoyable. The use of games to reinforce the content suggests that exploiting the inherently motivational nature of computer games to help children to
may help dyslexic students to learn and retain existing grammatical rules.” Claire explained her motivation for the project. “While computers can be used to teach material as effectively as teachers, there is not currently an effective, age-appropriate, affordable
computer-based application which helps students with dyslexia to learn spelling rules. “Thus, it was undertaken to design such an application with the intention of hosting it online and making it freely available. The product teaches spelling rules in a way that is accessible specifically to people with dyslexia. “It combines audio with written words (many of the problems that dyslexic people have with reading and spelling stem from a phonological processing deficit).” The final product demonstrates that interactive media can be used to help children with dyslexia to learn spelling rules in a way that is primarily enjoyable and self-directed. The use of games to reinforce the content suggests that exploiting the inherently motivational nature of computer games to help children to learn is a viable possibility not only for literacy instruction, but any subject. McNeilis added: “The games have different levels for different abilities. The experience is more like games than lessons. The games include an inbuilt reward system. The product includes multiple examples of the rules in action and is aimed at learners aged between 8 and 14 years.” The shortlist is currently under evaluation and the overall winner will be announced on 14 September 2011. Teriyaki Salmon with Egg Noodles
www.getitweekly.ie
Teriyaki is simple a spiced soya sauce marinate than can be used for a variety of meats and fish dishes. I have separated this recipe so you can make and use marinate in other dishes. Teriyaki works really good with the Salmon and noodles and I have often served this dish and it goes down really well every time. If you wish cook an extra few pieces of salmon and allow go cold and have it flaked up in a salad the following day or even in a pasta dish it is excellent, healthy and nutritious. Serves: 4 Ingredients
Method
4 salmon cuts approx 160g each 1 limes, zest and juice Marinate 2 tablespoons olive oil ½ Red chilli 4 table spoons honey 2 clove garlic crushed 1 stem of ginger, finely chopped 8 table spoons dark soy sauce Noodles 4 portions of egg noodles fresh coriander, chopped 2 table spoon toasted sesame oil
Marinate Heat some olive oil in a non stick pan and fry the ginger, garlic and chopped chilli. Add the zest and juice of the lime and pour in the soy sauce. Add the honey and cook for 2 minutes or until reduced and should appear sticky. Salmon Pan-fry the salmon for 2 minutes each side in a hot griddle pan.
When the sauce is reduced add the salmon to the teriyaki sauce frying pan. Egg Noodles Cook the noodles, by boiling water and add noodles for two minutes only, drain and then add the toasted sesame oil, coriander and a squeeze of lime. Serve the salmon on a bed of noodles with coriander leaves and twist of lime.
Brian’s Tips Serve with crunchy mixed salad leaves and toasted pine nuts. If you prefer make marinate and place salmon in it over night then BBQ Salmon pieces. Use marinate for chicken and other seafood dishes also.

Rte’s Nationwide to feature Donegal this evening A Nationwide special featuring some of Donegal’s most famous characters and sites is to feature on RTE last Friday evening. The three items to featured on this evening’s porgramme on RTE 1 included the story of Fr.James McDyer of Glencomcille, the cliffs at Sliabh League and also the story of Kilcar yarns. Viewers can hear the story of Fr McDyer - a
remarkable man who many say was ahead of his time and who would love to have around today. He came to Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal in the early 1950s to a glen scourged by emigration and set about transforming the lives of its people - creating jobs and much more besides. Using footage from the RTÉ archives and some recently discovered film shot by the man himself, Eileen Magnier tells the story of
Father James McDyer. The team also finds out about the beauty of what has been described as the jewel in the Crown of Co. Donegal, the highest cliffs in Europe on the Sliabh League Peninsula. The show also featured the fascinating story of Donegal tweed. It’s renowned worldwide and used by some of the world’s top fashion designers and it came from a little
village in south west Donegal. Call it Donegal Yarn or Donegal Tweed - it’s a unique yarn used for spinning and knitting and it’s made in Kilcar in one of the few traditional wool spinning mills left. Coming in as raw wool, it’s worked through to a finished multicoloured fleck yarn and despite challenging economic times - business is booming! This programme can still be viewed on RTE’s iPlayer.
McConalogue attacks proposals to limit age of children starting school
‘House’ about that for showing your support for Donegal’s quest for Sam?! THE race is on for Donegal’s fans to go that extra mile in their support for their beloved county ahead of the All Ireland semi-final against Dublin. And leading the pack is one Dunfanaghy businesswoman who has quite literally covered her house in Donegal flags, bunting and signs. Liz McFadden from Main Street, Dunfanaghy is known as an ardent Donegal supporter – as how picture shows!
Liz, who owns The Willows B&B has spent hours making signs and decorating her business and it certainly has caught the eye. Dozens of tourists (many from Dublin!!) are stopping at the B&B to take pictures of the house. Rumours that Liz has offered Jim McGuinness and the boys free accommodation for life if they bring home Sam could not be confirmed.
CHARLIE McConalogue TD has described proposals to implement a minimum age of 5 for children starting school as an attack on families and a move that would seriously hinder children’s’ education and development. The Fianna Fail spokeman on Children said the proposal from the Department of Education would have significant implications for families in Co Donegal and for the early development of our children. “Fianna Fáil in Government rejected this proposal and we will continue to oppose it. I am urging this Government to do the same without delay. “If a minimum age of 5 is set for starting school, many children would not enter the school system until they are 6 years of age depending on what month they were born in. “My concern is that parents will be left to bear the enormous burden of an extra year’s childcare costs and many simply cannot afford it,” he said. He added the Government should be concentrating on increasing supports for early childhood education, instead of considering any measures that could damage development.
“Fianna Fáil in Government introduced the free pre-school year under the Early Childhood Care and Education Programme (ECCE). This is a major initiative providing equal access to early childhood education for 70,000 children across the country. “The free pre-school year benefits children in the key developmental period just before starting school. At the moment children are eligible for the programme where they are between 3 years 3 months and 4 years 6 months on 1st September each year. If
the Government is even considering raising the school starting age, they must commit to extending free preschool year. “The Government cannot simply bring in a major change that affects thousands of families without providing additional support and resources to ensure all children still get the best possible start in their most influential development years.”

Children with vision Y
OUR child’s sight is his/her most precious sense, yet how do you know if your child has a problem with their eyes or their vision? If your child has a problem with his/her eyes, the key to preventing problems is early detection. Children with vision or eye health problems can face barriers in life. Visual problems can affect their abilities in sport, schoolwork and social development. Quality eyecare and proper advice helps enable children with vision problems reach their highest potential. 5-10% of all pre-schoolers have problems with their eyes or vision. 20-25% of all children of school going age have vision problems. All national schools carry out vision screening checks, but often this is done, only twice whilst your child is at national school. The earlier the problems are detected, the better the chances of success in treating the problem. Optometrists/ Opticians are trained to check your child’s vision at all stages of development, and pick up the early signs of any problems.
Why are visual skills necessary for school success?
When children start school they are using their eyes in a much more concentrated way compared to when they were babies, toddlers or even pre-schoolers. These are the skills children use daily as part of the learning process. VISUAL ACUITY, ability of the eyes to see clearly at far distances FOCUSSING, ability of the eyes to change quickly and smoothly to focus at different distances, eg. desk, to teacher, to blackboard, and back to desk. EYE TRACKING, following a moving objecting, eg. a ball.
EYE TEAMING, the ability to use and coordinate both eyes together in binocular vision. HAND-EYE COORDINATION, using the information sent to the brain from the eyes to direct the hands in performing activities (drawing or sport). VISUAL PERCEPTION, organising images on a printed page into letters, words and ideas which the child can understand and remember. Any problem with children’s visual skills will clearly interfere with their ability to develop their learning skills.
Here are some of the signs and symptoms to look out for;
• Complaining of not being able to see the blackboard, the TV, or the ball when playing or watching sport. • Either eye turning in or out. • Holding things very close to the face. • Frequent headaches. • Eye rubbing or blinking. • Reduced attention span. • Avoidance of reading or close work. • Covering one eye when carrying out activities. • Tilting the head to one side. • Complaining of double vision. • Repeatedly losing place when reading. • Difficulty in retention of information which has been previously read. If you have any concerns about your child’s vision, why not call in and arrange an appointment for an eye examination. Appointments are available with either Claire Mallon or Irene Higgins, Monday – Friday. Tel 074 93 74410.

BULKING After weight loss the most frequent request that I get at The Gym is to bulk up. Whereas the female populace generally worry about their expanding size, the men worry about the opposite, and seek to gain a bit of bulk, particularly on the upper body. So, how is it done? Muscle growth depends on stress on the muscles. This is caused by undertaking weight bearing exercises, or resistance training as it is also known. In order to create extra size it is necessary to overload the muscle and put it under pressure. What occurs then is that internally the muscle will suffer from micro tears in the fibres, which are small indefinable lacerations. As with any cut or injury in the body the blood will immediately race into the affected area in order to repair it. And with any other injury scar tissue will result after the blood has successfully repaired the damage caused by the overload. If we imagine an external cut, and remember what it looks like when the body has caused scar tissue to form, then the area with scar tissue is bigger than the surrounding area. Well this is similar to what is happening internally and as the scar tissue mounts then the muscle bulk increases. So basically in order to create extra muscle size we need to injure ourselves!! However that is not say we should work out the muscles with such huge weights that we injure ourselves definably, as the injuries I am referring to are micro and therefore not so obvious. What is also significant is rest. The building process occurs during the rest period. If we continue to tear up the muscle in the aforementioned fashion then the muscle will never get the opportunity to form scar tissue, and permanent damage will be the result. It is advisable to rest whatever muscle group we have worked for at least 48 hours, but preferably 72 hours. Remember it is during rest that the muscle is growing, so if you are impatient for progress it is while you are doing nothing that the muscle is getting bigger.
UP
Another essential is the inclusion of protein in the diet. If you have been reading this article recently then you will be aware that the role of protein in the diet is to repair, so as you have caused the micro tears then you will need protein to repair them. Protein is found in fish, particularly oily and fresh fish, chicken, steaks, liver and eggs as well as nuts. If you want to fast track the process then there are protein supplements available. The range of supplements available are endless and some include salts and chemicals that enable the proteins to enter the muscle quicker, by assisting with the reception, like Inulin. Ask at the health food shop for further advice before purchasing any of the products to see which is best suited for your purpose. The timing of the protein intake is also important as there is generally a two hour window of opportunity immediately after training whereupon the protein will get immediately into the muscle. This is due to the fact the blood will be racing into the afflicted area in order to repair it, therefore the quicker you can get the protein into the blood the more effective it will be. But be careful of the attitude that the more protein the better. The guidelines on the packaging of supplements are there for a reason, because that is the optimum amount of protein that the body can regulate. If you overload the body with protein then it cannot process it and it will put severe pressure on the kidneys. So if it larger muscles and not dialysis treatment that you want do not be fooled into thinking more is better. Enough is better. But as I stated earlier before embarking on any supplement regime or dietary regime get advice from a health and fitness professional. Do not always seek out the one with bulging eyes and exploding muscles because they may not always give the most rational advice!! Next week I will look into more depth the range of training regimes that could be embarked on to achieve the bulking aim.

SEEKING SOUTHERN BELLES FOR NORTH WEST THEATRE PRODUCTION GREASEPAINT Productions takes us across the pond this year as they set about casting with their upcoming auditions for “Steel Magnolias”. Written by Robert Harling, this play represents females of all ages, shapes and backgrounds. It is the quintessentially Southern American play about the lives of six women who assemble at Truvy’s beauty salon in a small town in Louisiana. The entire cast is composed of six female characters, and the story is a tale of their respective lives and how they intertwine. Donall Henderson who is directing the show said “I suppose it’s a very real play, which conveys real emotions and its set in the everyday environment of a hairdressing salon, where there’s usually gossip, friendship, advice and support of some kind among staff and customers. It’s really just a lovely story about hope, faith and love and faith.” Donall is also pleased to be teaming up with co-director and local drama teacher, Emma Porter who runs Vivid Performances. Emma is delighted to be collaborating with Donall once again, following on from Greasepaint’s success with The Factory Girls by local playwright Frank McGuinness. She says in some ways, the women in this play echo those of Factory Girls; “We see them at each other’s throats. We also see the eye rolls, and the having to put up with the eccentricities of their neighbours. We also see how they support each other in times of crisis and how loyalty prevails no matter what.” Greasepaint Productions is searching for a talented cast for this production, which opens at St Mary’s Hall, Buncrana in November. It is hoped that the women who audition will perform some heartbreaking monologues and backward fairytales. Donall added “I think that Steel Magnolias in particular, gives an array of opportunities to portray a variety of characters from the naive to the very eccentric, regardless of age.” For this production, the team is hoping that they will be

able to help unleash some local talent that has perhaps shied away from the stage in recent years. “So often, people think they’re too old to be on stage, but they’re not.” Donall said, “It’s important that we encourage, nurture and embrace people’s talent across all generations, especially when they have so much to give. Who knows? We might even find the next Olympia Dukakis or Shirley MacLaine.” Other members of the production team include Creative Director, Caitriona Bradley, who never fails to provide an awe inspiring set and Elaine Grant, once again taking the helm with front of house management. This year, the team is also pleased to welcome Shauna Doherty in her new role as Stage Manager, having had a number of years experience on the backstage crew. Auditions for “Steel Magnolias” take place in St Mary’s Hall, Buncrana on Saturday 3rd September 2011 from 2 – 4 pm and whilst this is an all female cast, we also invite men to also come along and register their interest in helping out backstage and front of house. Steel Magnolias will be performed during November/December 2011 in Buncrana, Derry and Letterkenny. It is also anticipated that this production will be performed at a number of drama festivals throughout Ireland in Spring 2012. For further details and information please e-mail greasepaint_productions@hotmail.co.uk Note to Editor: Greasepaint Productions is a community theatre group based in Buncrana, Inishowen, County Donegal. Previous productions include Calamity Jane, The Factory Girls, RENT and their award winning Wizard of Oz.

Majella reveals how she feels she has finally beaten her depression DANIEL O’DONNELL’S wife Majella is to reveal how she believes she has beaten the depression that has haunted her life for years. The bubbly mum-of-two reveled earlier this year how she has battled the condition for years and even considered committing suicide. But Majella has now told RTE’s Would You Believe programme that she has never felt better. Majella recently released her own album of songs and now regularly performs on stage. She recently performed at the Harvey’s Point Cabaret Evening and was a huge attraction. However the Co Mayo woman revealed recently how she sat on a toilet seat clutching rosary beads and trying to find a way to go on as she battled depression. She has resigned herself to taking anti-depressants for the rest of her life to cope with her illness. She even ended up desperately contacting social services to help her care for her three year old daughter, Siobhan, during one of her blackest periods. The 50 year old, who divides her time with husband Daniel between Kincasslagh and Tenerife, says she is now on top of the world but she has learned she needs medication to treat her disease. She revealed she first had suicidal thoughts when her marriage was falling apart
“I honesty believed if I was gone their lives would much more…of course they would miss me for a few months but then they wouldn’t have this constant mad woman that’s down in England in the early nineties. “It is the most dreadful disease you could possibly have. You are in this hole and it’s way, way down and everyone else is at the top. Nobody can do anything for you, absolutely nobody. “You hear people who have committed suicide and people saying ‘why didn’t they come to me?’ “But you genuinely believe the world would be much better without you including your children. I did with mine. “I honesty believed if I was gone their lives would much more…of course they would miss me for a few months but then they wouldn’t have this constant mad woman that’s down “I just thought so many times I’m better off out of this. I did consider (suicide) numerous times but I didn’t have the guts to go through with it. “I had it since my teens and early twenties but I didn’t get medication. I read books and went to see a psy-
chologist and tried positive affirmations. “I went to the doctor and told him I couldn’t be depressed because I was a positive thinker and I read books. “He said ‘Majella, it’s like saying I can’t have blood pressure because I’ve read books’. “He said it was a chemical imbalance and I needed something to balance it. I haven’t been (depressed) since I started taking the anti-depressants. Thanks be to God. I was very lucky and they worked great for me.” She said she decided to wean herself off her tablets shortly after marrying Daniel but the depression returned. She said: “After I married I thought ‘This is fantastic. I have no more worries, I love this man to bits, he loves me. We’ve a great life. Surely to God I don’t need these’. “I start to wean myself of them slowly, slowly but surely. I remember Daniel was in the middle of a really big tour in England and I hit the bottom again. “I found myself with a pair of rosary beads sitting on a toilet at half past four in the morning in a hotel in London rocking back and forth and crying and praying. “I said ‘Please God don’t let me go down there again.’ Daniel just said then ‘Please go back on them and don’t ever come off them again’. “I don’t think I will. I think that’s it for life.”

Using creative controls or idiot modes on your camera TO the uninitiated, the idiot mode functions on their newly acquired digital SLR camera could be viewed as a real feature that will transform their photography. The idiot modes are the little face, landscape scene, runner or flower on the mode dial on their camera. If you really aren’t going anywhere in your photography then they will assist in shooting average photos. My advice though, is to take a black permanent marker and blot them out. They are not going to help you as you learn photography. The nice thing about pro cameras is that these options have been removed and there are no longer these choices. So you are forced to use the creative modes of Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. The reason to use these modes is answered in the following points.
1. A perture Value (A or Av on most cameras)
By choosing aperture value you get control of, you guessed it, your aperture. You choose the aperture and the camera gets to choose the shutter speed. This gives you complete control of depth of field, i.e. how much of the photo is in focus in front of and behind the subject you are focusing on. You can blur out the background or have a sharply focused landscape from foreground to the background. You have control of the size of the aperture which controls depth of field and the amount of light allowed through the lens. Now the problem you’ll experience when controlling the aperture is that the camera has no idea of fast movement in the scene. So it will choose the shutter speed. This is not good if it chooses the wrong speed. So what do you do? Look at point 2.
Camera Tip
2. Time Value or Shutter Priority (S or Tv on most cameras)
The problem you have experienced needs to be corrected by choosing the shutter speed and allowing the camera to select the aperture. You might want the action blurred so a slower shutter speed is selected, or perhaps you want the action or movement frozen and in sharp focus so a fast shutter speed is selected. All nice and simple and for most of the time a really creative shot. Now another issue raises its head. What happens when you want to select both the aperture and the shutter speed. Say, a frozen movement with a shallow depth of field. You can’t rely on the camera to get it right, so what do you do? Look at point 3.
3. Manual Mode (M on most cameras)
A whole chapter can be written on manual mode but the bottom line is that it gives you the control you need over all aspects of the image. The camera meter will give you a recommended shutter speed and aperture but you may want a slightly different effect, so, choose the aperture and shutter speed you require. But, by doing this there might not be enough light and you are left with a dilemma, a bad exposure. That’s where the exposure triangle comes to your rescue. The third element of exposure after aperture and shutter speed is ISO. By increasing the ISO level you will make the sensor more sensitive to light thereby adding the necessary light to the image and allowing you to use the aperture and shutter speed of your choosing. I just want to stress that this is a very simplified look at taking control of the creative controls of your camera. As you learn digital photography take time to explore and experiment with each of these controls. Once you master them you will never shoot on automatic again. The freedom it gives you to create the perfectly exposed image will change you forever. Happy shooting!

MEP slams P proposals for eu-wide corporate tax rate
at the Cope Gallagher MEP today said that introducing common corporate tax rates in Europe is ‘simply not a runner ‘ and will not wash politically. Mr Gallagher commented: “The reason the Eurozone is facing real difficulties is not down to the different level of corporation tax charged in various member states, but because of the level of indebtedness of EU Governments. The majority of Eurozone countries are in breach of budget deficit rules laid down for the operation of the Eurozone. “Tax rates, including the level of corporation tax that a country charges cannot be changed unless there is the unanimous agreement of all 27 EU member states. This is the undisputed legal position under the EU treaties. “The bottom line is that Ireland is still a very positive location for direct foreign investment and this is helping to increase the level of our exports. Changing our corporation tax rate would negatively impact on what is a successful and functioning element of our economy and a key driver for recovery and future growth. “EU leaders should not seek to mess with this. It should also be pointed out that Ireland does not even have the lowest rate of corporation tax in Europe. While European Governments are forced to face up to dealing with high levels of debt, growth strategies must always be put in place. This was a point recently re-enforced by the new head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Le
Garde. “Growth strategies must be in place in Ireland for a variety of different sectors, including in the areas of agriculture and food, the digital agenda, energy efficiencies and renewables, climate change, marine policy and research, innovation and science. These are the areas where we can create the new jobs of the future and become more competitive in the years ahead.”

Donegal Pet Rescue - An Appreciation
Success- the Kerry way
DONEGAL Pet Rescue (DPR) would like to give their thanks to the family & friends of The Late Rodger Byrne for their generous donations at his funeral. A moving graveside service was held for Rodger, attended not only by his family & friends, but also by his dogs Bob & Buddy (pictured here with Rodger at a walk held last year for DPR). Rodger was a great supporter of DPR & animal welfare in general, & his generosity & kindness will be remembered forever. He would be proud of everyone who gave so generously. Pictured is Rodger’s brother Pat handing over a cheque for €550 to DPR’s Ryan McCauley. DPR is holding another dog walk this weekend - Saturday 27th August at 2pm - in Glenveagh National Park. A number of Rodger’s friends & family will be doing the ‘Take The Lead’ walk in his honour, and of course bringing Buddy & Bob along. For details see www. dpr.ie or www.facebook.com/donegalpetrescue or contact Bronwyn on fundraising@dpr. ie or 086 088 0189
A number of milestones have now been reached by the Kerry Group. Annualised sales are now running at €5bn a year; farmers have voted to sell shares in the PLC to bring their co-op’s shareholding in the group down to a possible 10% and Kerry itself has committed publicly to paying the leading milk price in the country for milk produced during the ‘’growing season’’. It is a formidable list of achievements and commitments. Less than 40 years ago, the processing of milk in Kerry was done by a rag-bag collection of dairy disposal creameries which the State wisely decided to sell on the basis that it had no business in the dairy product manufacturing business.

Before you head out on your walk it is important that both you and your dog are relaxed, if your dog is not relaxed then you are NOT in control, The first thing to do is to desensitise your dog to all the triggers that make him go skitso before your walk, i.e. The word “walk”, the rattle of keys, putting on your coat/wellies , heading for the door , the sight of the lead ,and many more. So get into the habit of getting the lead out and about, just because the lead is out in full view doesn’t mean your going for a walk, you may want to clean it or drape it about your
neck, the decision to lead the walk should be yours not the dogs!!So go now and get your coat on and if the dog goes over the top, go make a cuppa and wait until the dog is calm, then call him to you calmly and off you go. Because you now are attempting to take control you will see the dog ping about, mouthing at the lead etc . This is not because the dog needs exercise! We have all seen the child in the sweet shop throw a tantrum when they don’t get their own way – if the adult gives in then the child learns certain behaviours get it a result , it’s the same with dogs . If you are out there with a dog that pulls on the lead you are not in control , The alpha always leads from the front , so if I see someone being dragged down the road I just smile to myself and think “ hmmm” who’s in control there .. Don’t be fooled into a false sense of control either i.e., the dogmatic, the halti or harness, these are just gadgets to help the human hold on, but if you think about it, the dog is still pulling, I really like the term “ Dogs pull because humans follow “ If your dog is pulling you down the street are you really happy and in
It had been widely assumed that the Kerry facilities would be acquired by either Golden Vale or Ballyclough. In the event, a small group of executives led by Denis Brosnan, Hugh Friel and Denis Cregan coupled with a small group of committed dairy farmers, decided to build a Kerry-based co-op dairy industry. The devastation of the Kerry cow population in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s because of the Brucellosis eradication scheme, coupled with the decision to raise external capital in a PLC framework in 1986 at a time of very high interest rates, were the two key events that shaped the development of the group into what is now a major world player.
control .When a dog stops feeling the need to pull, you end up with a loose smiley lead ,When I go out to do a consultation one of my main questions is “Does your dog pull on the lead “ I very often get told no, but I see different and after a while the client sees a different view to what they thought .Think about this statement “ a dog that pulls you has no respect for you really , your just a subordinate and as a pack member you must follow the leader “ Test *Lets forget all this sit, stay, stand carry on!!! open the front door while your dog is beside you. One of two things will happen, the dog in charge of the house will bolt out the door end of story , the subordinate dog with respect for you will sit back while the door is open and grant you right of way no need to be told to sit stay etc ! More problems that occur due to a dog pulling and leading on a walk are, aggression towards other dogs on lead, marking every pillar and post from when you leave the house until you come back, sitting and refusing to go any further, barking at traffic & people .If your dog is displaying any of these symptoms he is giving off a clear message that he is out
It would not have happened without a clear view of where the opportunities lay and without a capacity to grasp them. For the future, we are now into a new phase. The original milk suppliers with their access to cheap PLC and patronage shares have seen their family wealth rise to levels that could not have been dreamt of. This is now history. While its roots were briefly in the co-op movement, Kerry is now, after this week, a much more conventional company in its structure. The key determinant of its success is its return to shareholders, many of whom are farmers but Kerry has long encouraged national and international investors to buy its stock. With the collapse of the Irish banks and the mediocre share performance of companies such as Cement Roadstone, more Irish fund managers are looking to Irish food stocks -both Kerry and Glanbia. Glanbia is still 54% owned by the original co-op and farmers are reckoned to own somewhat over 65% of the entire PLC. It is in a fundamentally different position to Kerry. The Kerry story is unique in the consistency of its progress, its commitment to hiring excellent young graduates to form a future layer of management and now, in its commitment to pay, subject to some caveats, the leading milk price to its supplying farmers. It would be churlish not to recognise what is a real Irish success story. It may be worth mentioning that, in 2008, Denis Brosnan achieved the Irish Farmers Journal unique contribution to Irish agriculture award. It has not been awarded since.
of his depth and is extremely stressed out, but at the same time he is not willing to hand over the control to you!!! You see when your all at home in the safety of the den he sees you as a good chum but when it comes to the serious out doors where there are a thousand threats coming at him, he has to work harder to fend off the danger and keep you safe . How do I stop the pulling? I hear you say!!! When the dog pulls as in tension on the lead (you can start this exercise in doors in the kitchen) stop!! Don’t follow, remain calm and wait for the dog to look at you, when he looks at you or sits down he is asking, hey!! What happening?, This could take anything up to ten minutes initially, the first time is always the longest, after you get a look or a sit , take a few more steps , again if he pulls Stop ! Wait for the look or sit, you must now change direction; you are now in control of what direction you are going. Repeat this until the dog is focused on you and very aware of your presence, After about twenty minutes of non verbal stopping and starting and changing direction the dog should be looking to you to see where you want to go!!!

GAA CLUB NOTES BURT The long awaited social event of the summer takes place this Friday 26 August. The Jigs’n’Rigs Irish dance event sees the Burt GAA Club and Evans School of Irish Dancing come together and match members from our club with the dancers from the Evans school to raise funds for both parties. The show takes place in the Halfway House, Tooban, Burnfoot and kicks off at 8pm. Tickets for adults are €15 and children under 12 can pay at the door on the night for €7. It has nearly been a sell-out with only a few tickets left. Please check with Jigs’n’Rigs on face book for more info or contact Benny McDermott or any of the dancers. Dancing until late, with a DJ after the show. Goodluck to all involved and there’s sure to be plenty of craic for the audience too. The reserve footballers had a good win over Red Hughs in the 1st leg of their Junior B Championship match in Burt on Sunday. Goals from Christopher McDermott and two from Phelim Henry in the first half gave Burt a commanding half-time lead. The defence was well marshalled by Joe Donaghey and Michael Gallagher and the Killygordon outfit could find no way through on goal. The final score was Burt 3-9, Red Hughs 0-5. The senior footballers defeated Downings in Sunday’s second game played in Hibernian Park. Burt started off to a flyer with two goals from Paul McHugh and Joe Boyle. Downings found a way through to goal themselves midway through the half and by half-time there was two points between the sides - Burt 2-2, Downings 1-3. Downings got the first score of the second half but that was the closest they would get as Burt started to edge ahead with points coming from all over the side. Final score was Burt 2-12, Downings 1-7. The U16 hurlers had a fine win over MacCumhaills in the League semi-final last Thursday. Burt won 8-10 to 2-4 and will now face Ballyshannon in the Final this Thursday. Joe will be in contact about arrangements. The U12 hurlers had a comfortable win over Setanta at The Cross last Thursday despite undermanned. This Thursday they are home to MacCumhaills. Johnny will be in contact with parents. The minor footballers beat Glenswilly 1-9 to 0-4 in the Northern Board Division 2 championship last Friday in Hibernian Park. The second leg will take place this Friday in Glenswilly with throw-in at 7pm. The U8 Hurling and Football Academy is now on Saturday mornings in Hibernian Park, Burt. Training starts from 10.30am to 12noon.. Any new players/members are welcome. Can parents please send lunch/ drink with their child for the midsession break. If anybody has any questions, please feel free to contact any of the coaches at anytime. The coaches and their numbers: Martin McGrath - 087 7431332; Rory Grant - 087 7763668; Benny Harrigan 086 8670070; Johnny Downey - 086 3066874. for any parents that would like to help out the coaches at these sessions in any way. All help no matter how big or small is greatly appreciated! The U13 footballers have a match away to Malin on Saturday in the NB Div 2 League. Seán will be in contact about arrangements. . U13/14 football training is on Saturday mornings at Hibernian Park from 10.30 -12 noon. Please remember to bring your water bottle for hygiene reasons. Anyone that has lotto cards or who sells lottos for the club, please remember to hand them into your coach at training. There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Two weekly winners were: Breege Grant, Burt, €30 and Bobby Porter, Skeoge, €30. The numbers drawn were 2,7,8,16,19. Next week’s jackpot is €1750. Anyone with lotto’s should have them in the clubhouse by Tuesday night at 8pm or hand it to any club member. If anyone is interested in signing up to the direct debit, please contact Liam McKinney. CARNDONAGH Senior Football: Carndonagh 2-03, Naomh Naille 0-09. The Carn players showed their mettle last Saturday evening when they did enough to justify a draw in this hard fought game played in Mountcharles. Indeed the management and players were disappointed that they were unable to hold on to a 3 point lead with 10 minutes remaining on the clock. This just shows how their expectations have increased, as a few weeks previous they would have been happy to settle for a draw. This was a game in which scores were hard to come by. Carn only managed 2 scores in the first period, a point by Dominic Doherty (K) and a goal by Donnacha Gallagher. Donnacha was unlucky not to have scored a second goal when he intercepted a poor kick out but the keeper brought off a fine save. St Nauls scored 5 points to lead at the break by a single point. Pure determination got Carn the breaks early in the second half. The accurate kick outs from Gerard Crossan gave Carn every advantage. Oliver McConologue was tireless at midfield while Dominic Doherty (K) and Pádraig Doherty, playing as corner forwards were menacing the opposition. Padraig scored Carn’s second point and a short time later latched onto a blocked shot from Gallagher to bury the ball in the net. Carn were now 3 points ahead but St Naul’s were also in no mood for defeat and scored their 6th point before Cathal O’Kane scored one back for Carn. The final 10 minutes was indeed tense and arguably Carn should have gone further ahead but for some resolute defending by the St Naul’s players. Making the most of the breaks St Naul’s scored 3 points to level a very competitive game. The team and scorers were: Gerard Crossan, Michael Nelson, Gerry

Simpson, Ronan O’Connor, Dermot McGonagle, Paddy Nelson, Rory Ward, Oliver McConologue, Conor Doherty, Ryan Davenport, Cathal O’Kane (0-01), Liam Shields, Dominic Doherty (0-01), Donnacha Gallagher (1-00), Padraig Doherty (1-01), Fergal Mathews, Cathal Doherty, Michael McLaughlin and Declan O’Donnell. Reserve Football: Carndonagh 1-05, Naomh Naille 1-09. The Carn players only came to life during the second half of this game as they trailed by 6 points to 2 at the break. Conor McDonough displayed some fine fielding at corner back while Kevin Doherty and Paddy McCallion battled hard at midfield. Carn improved late in the second half as Paddy McLaughlin made some telling runs to create the scoring chances but it was too little too late to change the outcome of the game. The team : Shane Gibbons, Conor McDonough, John Hirrell, Paul Lafferty, Ryan Kelly, Paddy McCallion, Tiarnan Coyne, Kevin Doherty (T), Steven Doherty (B), Paddy McLaughlin (M), Sean McLaughlin (G), Steven Canny, Kevin Kelly, Shane Devlin. Underage Hurling: On Saturday the club travelled to Owenbeg Centre of Excellence in Derry and took part in the U/8, U/10 and U/12 hurling blitz. This was a great opportunity for all the underage hurlers to play against different opposition. Forty three boys and girls took part in the summer camp last week. Many thanks to Paul O Brien, Enda McDermott, Johnny Downey Marty McGrath and Demi Walker who coached for the week. Thanks also to club members Eily Matthews Jamie McLaughlin and Conor McCormick for assisting the coaches during the week. Next Saturday Conor McCormick and Jamie McLaughlin will play on the U/16 county hurling team at the All Ireland Blitz in Portlaoise while
U/14 player Danny McCarron will play at the U/14 All Ireland Blitz in Mullingar. Also on Saturday U/13 hurlers Enda Callaghan and Cathal Doherty will represent the club at the all county blitz in Ballyconnell while in Monaghan U/15 hurlers Mark Diver, Danny Monagle and Christopher McCormick will be the club representatives at the all county blitz in Monaghan. Underage Football: The U/14 Footballers play Milford in the Northern Board Shield Final in Newtowncunningham this Wednesday evening at 7pm 9Camogie: The Camogie club hosted an Ulster Development U-14 Bitz on Saturday 13th August with 6 teams from 4 counties represented. There were 2 teams from both Antrim and Derry as well as teams from Cavan and Donegal. All teams had 4 games and all the visiting teams complimented the club on the tremendous pitches and facilities. Niamh McDaid, Caoimhe McLaughlin, Beibhin Doherty and Eimear McLaughlin represented Carndonagh on the Donegal squad. Under 10: The under 10 Camogs recorded a great victory over Burt on Friday evening, the 12th August. The game was divided into 10 minute quarters. All the girls played extremely well with Kieva Callaghan, Niamh Callaghan and Megan Gallagher being outstanding on the night. The team was, Muireann Porter, Kirsty Gallagher, Clara McLaughlin, Beibhin McClure, Caoimhe Browne, Eimear Doherty, Kieva Callaghan, Magan Gallagher, Niamh Callaghan and Cliona McNeil. Well done Girls. Quiz:Please support the quiz in Simpsons Bar on this Tuesday 23rd August as the proceeds will go towards funding ladies underage football and camogie in the club. Lotto: The winning numbers this week were 5, 12, 15, 8 and 23. There was no jackpot winner. €30 Barney McDaid, Glasgow. €15 Brian O Don-
nell, Woodside, Robert Smyth (Jn), Cashel, Oliver Simpson and Tracey McDaid 30 Balmain. Jackpot this week €5,200. Draw will take place in McClure’s Bar on Wednesday night. MALIN Congratulations to the senior side on an excellent 0-11 to 0-10 away win against Glenfin on Saturday evening in Division 1 of the All County League. Malin began the game missing 7 of the players who started the Championship game against Glenfin but full credit to the young lads who came in, Brendan McLaughlin, Finbarr Collins and Dan McDaid in particular doing very well. Malin had an excellent first half, leading by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break and holding the home side scoreless from play. The second period saw Glenties come back into the game, Leon Thompson pulling his side back to 0-10 each with a score in the last minute of normal time but a Matthew Byrne point in the last minute of added time, his sixth from play in a game where he also was superb, gave two valuable points to Malin. Scorers for Malin were Matthew Byrne (0-6), Seamus Doherty(0-2), Anthony Kelly(0-2,2 frees) and Darren Doherty. The reserve side, depleted by the number of players brought up into the senior ranks, were well beaten by Glenties. The Junior B side lost away to Letterkenny Gaels in the Junior B Championship on Sunday. Malin lost by a point in the home leg of their minor Division 1 cham

NAOMH PÁDRAIG The numbers drawn in last weeks lotto draw were 5, 3, 1, 4, 6, 2 and 7. There was no jackpot winner however 3 runner-up prizes of €35 went to Kevin Diver, Johnny Lynch and Rosemary Keaveney. Next weeks jackpot will be €900. The Seniors were back in league action at the weekend as they took on Moville in their second big derby game in a week after last weeks impressive championship victory over Burt. The opening exchanges were closely fought and it was 12 minutes into game before Moville hit opening score. Naomh Pádraig responded through centre half back Martin Duffy before Moville retook lead with a well-taken 45’. However Naomh Pádraig then took control of game and hit 4 scores in succession from Anthony McColgan, Eunan Keaveney, Mark Duffy and a Damian Diver free. Moville ended half with their third score to leave it Naomh Pádraig 0-05 Moville 0-03 at the break. Naomh Pádraig started second half strongly with a goal from Seanán McColgan & this was followed up by 3 points from Damian Diver, Aidan Lynch and an excellent Gerard McColgan effort to give home side an 8 point lead. Moville responded with 2 scores in a row however could not compete with intensity of Naomh Pádraig forwards who went on to finish game strongly with points from Damian Diver (3), Aidan Lynch (2), Martin Duffy and Seanán McColgan while visitors could only add a further 3 points. Final scoreline Naomh Pádraig 1-15 Moville 0-08. Team and Scorers: John Paul McColgan, Laurence Lynch, Enda McColgan, Gary McKinney, Damian Laird, Martin Duffy (0-02), Anthony McColgan (0-01), Charlie Molloy, Gerard McColgan (0-01), Cathal McColgan, Eunan Keaveney (0-01),

The U14’s continued their great Championship run with victory over Naomh Colmcille to qualify for Division 3 Championship final. Naomh Pádraig dominated game from start to finish however only held a slender 4-point lead at the break despite all their possession. Lads started game in perfect fashion as Ultan McCool hit back of net with opening score. This was followed up by Aidan McLaughlin’s first point of evening before Ultan Doherty hit score of the game when he picked up possession in middle of pitch before beating 2 men and unleashing an unstoppable shot into back of net. Aidan McLaughlin and Ultan Doherty each hit a further point apiece before Naomh Colmcille hit 2 points of their own however these were quickly cancelled out by a brace from James Breslin. This was followed up with 2 further points from Ultan McCool and Aidan McLaughlin. Naomh Colmcille then got back in the game as they scored 2 goals in a row, both from the penalty spot and also hit a point to leave it Naomh Pádraig 2-07 Naomh Colmcille 2-03 at the break. Naomh Pádraig reasserted their dominance straight from second-half throwin with point apiece from Ultan Doherty and Ultan McCool before Stephen Slattery showed great composure to score 2 goals in a row to end game as a contest. Naomh Colmcille could only add 3 points in the second half while Naomh Pádraig added scores from Colm McCarron, Darren McColgan and another 3 Aidan McLaughlin points to leave a final scoreline of Naomh Pádraig 4-14 Naomh Colmcille 2-06. Naomh Pádraig scorers: Aidan McLaughlin (006), Stephen Slattery (2-00), Ultan Doherty (1-02), Ultan McCool (1-02), James Breslin (0-02), Colm McCarron (0-01) and Darren McColgan (0-01). The U13’s got their Inishowen campaign off to a winning start as they beat Burt by 3-06 to 4-01. Victory was secured thanks mainly to a last minute penalty save by keeper Shane Orr. This Tuesday 23rd Aug, lads play host to Malin at Ture. Throw-in at 7pm. Thanks to everyone who attended Radio Quiz in Mary Deeney’s last Friday in aid of Donegal Players Training Fund. Congratulations to winning team of Paddy Haughey, Aidan McAleer, Angela Diver and Aoife Casey. The U16’s have qualified for Division 3 Championship Shield Final where they will take on Glenswilly. at home on Saturday in the 1st round 2nd leg of championship and came a away with an impressive victory winning by five points. There were some great performances all over the field including some impressive point scoring from Damien Browne. The all important goal was scored by Peadar McGlinchey. Well done to all involved. The reserves were also in championship action on Sunday away to Burt and were defeated narrowly. A lack of match action in the last few weeks probably did not help the lads cause but they have a great chance to turn around this tie when they play the 2nd leg at home in the coming weeks. The date for this game is not yet confirmed. Training continues this week for both teams and all players should attend in preparation for the big games ahead. Ladies: The senior ladies had no game at the weekend. Training continues at the pitch on Wednesday at 8.00 and Friday at 7.30pm. Our U14 boys team played in the semi-final of the Northern Division Championship last week and just lost out to a strong Glenswilly side. It was a fighting perfomance and the players gave a great effort. This was the lads first defeat of the year. They now play Killybegs in the semi-finals of the All County League this Monday evening the 22nd at 7.00pm in Glenties. Best of luck to the lads. The U13 boys are provisionally fixed to play Glenfin away next Saturday morning in their first league game at 12 noon. Ulster Senior League PRO
As you may, or may not be aware, I have been appointed as the new PRO for the Ulster Senior League. I look forward to building on the close relations that we have established over my time as St. Eunan’s GAA club’s PRO (a post that I will continue with as well). I believe the USL is the Premier standard for football here in Donegal and I hope that together we can work to increase its profile with the football following community. I have a few ideas as to how we can achieve this – some of which may be possible, others that may not!! I realise that the onus for achieving my goals falls both to me and the clubs to give you information that is both accurate and informative as well as being well written and thorough. Here are some of the things that I am hoping to introduce (with your help): 1. Would it be possible to do a feature on 1 USL game per week, including pictures? I am thinking along the lines of each paper taking a turn (1 week in every 3 or 4) to produce a proper report that an inexperienced club PRO may not be able to produce as they just don’t have the experience. This report could be shared among the papers to ease the burden on yourselves??? I would appreciate your feedback on this idea. 2. I will be talking to each club about submitting a thorough match report (to include teams etc) and about the possibility of them taking some pictures as well. I realise that it isn’t possible for you to cover every game and that that is where clubs must pick up the burden to increase the exposure we get on a weekly basis in the local media. 3. I am also hoping to introduce a “Club Notes” section similar to what is done in the GAA. I often see in different sections of the paper for example, that Bonagee, Letterkenny Rovers, Drumkeen etc have pieces included in local notes sections. I would propose putting all these together in the Sports section of the paper. 4. I hope to have a new website in the near future as well that clubs will be able to go in and update themselves, add match reports etc. Hopefully this will also be a place that will be a beneficial tool to yourselves for picking up information. 5. I plan to set up a USL Facebook page as well, which should be live in the next few days. I am also open to any suggestions, criticisms, advice etc. that yourselves may have that will help increase the exposure through the media both locally and nationally (I would be grateful if any of you have a national media contact that you could pass on to me) for the USL. Can you also update me on your deadlines for information to be included for your various editions Finally, don’t forget that the USL League Cup Final between Cockhill Celtic and Fanad Utd. takes place at Leckview Park tomorrow (Sunday, August 21st) at 5pm. Termon vs Noamh Columba Burn Road TERMON welcomed Noamh Columba to the Burn Road last Sunday in the All County league divison two played in ideal conditions. Termon were without county keeper Micheal Boyle. Termon got off to a brilliant start with Tervor Alorn, Martin Sweeney, and Johnny Mc Cafferty getting on the scoresheet. Noamh Columba responded with points from a Pauric Gilliespie free & Micheal Mc Guire. On 10mins Former Finn Harps player Christy Conaghan then rattled the back of the net for Termon, John Mc Cafferty played a diagonal ball cross field to Conaghan who made no mistake in beating the keeper Pauric O Donnell. Termon then won a penalty after a footblock, in which Conaghan coolly finished. Noamh Columba then responded with 4 points from frees from Pauric Gilliespie. Anthony Mc Grenra then suffered a hamstring injury and was replaced on 17mins by Jimmy Gallagher for Termon. Conaghan then scored 3 points for Termon without reply. Termon keeper Francie Friel pulled off a fine saved to deney Oisin Mc Ginley who was sent clear one on one. Marty Sweeney scored another point for Termon to leave the scores at halftime 2-7 to 0-06points. After the restart Noamh Columba were again denied a goal by another save by Termon keeper Francie Friel. On 34mins Noamh Columba?s 13 eventually beat Friel, after good build up play. James Doherty replyed with a point winning possession from the kickout and running at the Noamh Columba?s defence tapped over. John Mc Cafferty, Martin Sweeney and Christy Conaghan added further points for the home side to leave the score 2-11 to 1-6. On 51mins Oisin Mc Ginley fired a goal for Noamh Columba, after what looked like a throw pass referee signalled play on and the goal stood.
Two futher points from Pauric Gilliespie incresed the pressure on the Termon defence, but a 61st min free from Trevor Alcorn sealed victory for the home side, on a scoreline of Termon 2-12 to Noamh Columba 2-08. Best for Termon were Christy Conaghan, Steve Mc Elwaine and Francie Friel, Noamh Columba were best served by Micheal Mc Guire, Pauric Gilliespie & Oisin Mc Ginley Teams: Termon. 1. Ulster Senior League Match Reports & News THE Dates have been announced for this years Umbro Intermediate Cup. The 1st Round will take place on October 9th with Rd. 2 is scheduled for October 30th. Teams that progress will then play Rd. 3 on December 4th. The USL Representative team will travel to Scotland on the weekend of September 10th & 11th to take on a Scottish Amateur Representative side in Ayr as they prepare for this year’s Inter Pro’s that will take place in Portlaoise on the weekend of October 1st – 3rd. It is hoped that this extra preparation will help the team to gel as they take on their counterparts from around the country in October. This year’s team is managed by Ollie Horgan and Mickey Rodgers. The trip will involve a Saturday evening training session before they play the Scottish Amateur Select on the Sunday. Congratulations to Fanad Utd. on picking up the first trophy of
this year’s Ulster Senior League campaign. On Sunday evening they defeated Inishowen kingpins Cockhill Celtic by 2 goals to 1 at the immaculate Leckview Park. Shaun McElwaine opened the scoring two minutes into the second half with a well directed header before PJ Hagan scored what proved to be the winning goal midway through the half when he intercepted a back pass and finished with aplomb. Cockhill made a fight of it though pulling a goal back almost immediately from the penalty spot. Fanad however were able to see the game out and take the Donegal News League Cup back to the Kingdom. Ulster Senior League Division One LETTERKENNY ROVERS 6 DRUMKEEN UNITED 0 Letterkenny Rovers edged closer to the Ulster Senior League First Division title with this convincing 6-0 defeat of Drumkeen United
at Leckview Park, last Thursday evening. The victory puts Garret McDaid’s young charges eleven points clear with just four games remaining so a win away to Kildrum Tigers this weekend would clinch the trophy. They wasted little time in asserting their authority on this contest with Terence Shiels scoring early on quickly followed by a fine strike from Michael Doherty from just inside the box. Rovers were playing freely and enjoying large spells of possession and their work ethic paid off midway through the first half when Paddy McDaid got on the end of an excellent passing move to make it 3-0. Their relentless pursuit towards goal showed no sign of abaiting and Daniel McCauley was in the right position to hammer home number four past the hapless Aidan Mitchell before young Conor Tourish added a fifth just before the break. With the points wrapped up,
Rovers took their foot of the pedal somewhat in the second half with just a solitary strike from McDaid to add to their tally but it was a comprehensive display against their closest challengers which leaves them odds on to claim the title honours. Referee - Mick Lagan SWILLY ROVERS 1 BONAGEE UNITED 2 A superb game of football played in glorious conditions. Swilly will feel hard done by in this absorbing contest. Two Dean Larkin goals, one in the final minute and Corey McCahill for the home side were the scorers. Conor Harley in the Bonagee goal twice denied Gavin Mackey and David Fisher with good saves in the first half. Larkin’s two goals on 17mins and again on 90 mins were both opportunist efforts sealing the win for Bonagee who played some good football too. Best for Swilly
were Ciaran Diver, Anthony Fisher and Ryan Toland. Best for Bonagee were Conor Harley, Darren Ashmore and Dean Larkin. Match referee: Con McLaughlin. Ulster Senior League Kildrum Tigers 5 Drumkeen United 1 Kildrum Tigers got back to winning ways on Friday night with an emphatic win over Drumkeen in St Johnston. Gary Patton had fired Drumkeen into an early lead, but that was as good as it got for the away team. Damian Crossan levelled it up when he rifled home and soon after he struck a clinical second to send Kildrum in 2-1 up at the break. The lethal Crossan completed his hat-trick with a classy finish in the second-half, while Darren Cassidy and Gavin Doherty were also on the mark as Kildrum took the win. Referee: D. McCafferty

Milford athletics manager tips Usain to be top of the world MILFORD athlete manager Ricky Simms reckons one of his key proteges - the sprint sensation Usain Bolt - will show the world how good he is at the World Championships next week. Simms, a former Finn Valley athlete, looks after some of the world’s top stars. And he says Jamaican Bolt is a down to earth guy who brings something special to athletics. “Sprinting’s a bit like boxing,” said the Co
Donegal man. “The showmanship, the swaggering. Usain’s a breath of fresh air for a troubled sport.” And he says of the media pressure: “He handles it all very well. At the start of his career he got questioned all the time. Now people have seen him. He’s been around. He’s been tested a lot, all the time in fact. He was tested this morning. He’s always clean. Within athletics people have never ques-
tioned him because they saw him as a kid at 15 and he was a fantastic talent then. He didn’t suddenly spring up from nowhere.” He gets on with Bolt so well, he says, because the Jamaicans and the Irish have a similar outlook on life. Usain will do well at the World Championships next week because he loves big events - and rises to those sorts of occasions. And the Milford man talked about bonding with Mo Farah, the UK’s No 1 distance ath-
lete, and bringing him to Donegal. “He has a way about him that is natural and makes people like him. One year I went back to Donegal for Christmas and Mo came to stay with the family,” said Ricky. “He’d been to Donegal a couple of times with English Schools and you could see he really loved the place. He’d have the craic with the people and they loved him too. He drove my car and lived like a member of the family, like a little brother to me really.”

ALL-IRELAND: ‘PLAYERS ARE SWITCHED ON FOR DUBS’ – JIM DONEGAL manager Jim McGuinness says his players are switched on and ready for the challenge of Dublin this Sunday - and he’s hoping to bury ghosts from his own past too. Jim played in midfield against Dublin in quarter-finals of 2002 which went to a replay. And he insisted: “The complete contrast there was that we weren’t true to ourselves. We weren’t honest with ourselves. We didn’t train hard enough. We weren’t committed enough. “We didn’t give it everything, we didn’t leave it on the field of play. We weren’t tactically switched on, we weren’t big enough, we weren’t fast enough. So we shouldn’t have won those games (to get there). “How we got so close to Armagh in their pomp and beat Tyrone as All-Ireland champions and drew with Dublin in 2002 (and lost the replay)... it’s beyond me.” He said being manager gives
him the chance to move Donegal forward. And forget the past. “I felt, if we can do that against them teams while operating at that level — we can win an Ulster championship or we can push on. “I would never say the All-Ireland because I feel you have to win the Ulster championship and be competitive in Ulster before you start thinking in those terms. You have got to basically earn it. “This group of players now are doing all the right things and they’re being honest and if we get beat — as Roy Keane famously said, you’ve got a clear conscience. “And if your conscience is clear and everybody is working for the better good, everybody is happy and you just move on.” If Donegal lose, he says, they will just move on. Celebrate the Ulster championship and then look forward. “If we lose, we will go down the road, have a few drinks. They
can disperse for a while. They can start rebuilding their lives and there will not be one word about it. “There will be no negatives. We will just go about the best way to try and make the thing better, who can make it better, how can we make x, y or z faster, bigger or stronger for next year and start the whole thing going again. “That’s the way we will be approaching it. I have wild respect for the players because they have been so disciplined in their approach. “Football is their life: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday is a normal week for us. They’re in a bed obviously early the nights before training so that’s a sacrifice.” The Donegal manager revealed: “We gave them chicken goujons and cocktail sausages on a Monday night after a recovery session and they weren’t happy that we went down that road.
“They’re looking after their diet so much now and a couple of them weren’t happy about that. That’s where they have taken themselves to.” And he says of this Sunday’s opposition: “What I find very interesting about watching Dublin is the player’s ability to transition. ‘Is
there a point on here? I’m going to take four steps and bounce past you and I’m going to go all the way and draw the full-back and go for goal or I can just put it over the bar.’ “They’re coached to a very high level. They’re very switched on with regard to their forward play.”
HAY – have you seen Donegal’s biggest supporter yet? THEY have spent two days building him and now Donegal’s largest mascot is almost ready! They’re calling him Murphy down at the Donegal Creameries yard in Letterkenny and he has already become an instant celebrity. Staff at the Creameries, who are the official sponsors of the Donegal football team, decided they had better do something bigger and better than most to show their support for Jim McGuinness and the lads. And at almost 30ft tall, it’s doubtful if anybody will top the giant mascot who is turning thousands of heads at the Ballyraine yard. Staff at the store used specially
commissioned steel frame before topping it with bales of hay and then designing probably the biggest ever jersey made for any Donegal supporter. Staff are planning to put the final touches to ‘Murphy’ today. It comes as All-Ireland semifinal fever hits a new high across the county. Fans have been warned to try and snap up the last of the tickets for next Sunday’s game as it has already been declared a sell-out by Croke Park officials. Murphy already has his five tickets for the game. Well ‘hay’ - he is no ordinary supporter!
