Table of content: “Limp in” poker definition Why is to limp in poker considered a poor strategy? Poker is a game of strategies and you get better at it with experience. There are players who are aware of the use of each and every strategy in the game and they can be categorized as the pros. However, not all players are pros, as there are players who have just started playing the game and are unaware of most of the situations. Their actions can tell that they are “beginners”. To limp in poker is also a part of one of such actions from a beginner. Here, we will discuss limp poker meaning and some additional facts about it.
“Limp in” poker definition The limp poker term is used to convey that a player is calling instead of raising or folding in a hand. Usually a player is expected to fold or raise in a hand but when a player chooses to call, he is said to be limping in poker. To limp in poker is just calling the minimum possible bet to stay in the hand. When a player chooses to limp in poker before any other player, it is called an open limp. The limp in poker definition tells us that players use it when they have a weaker or marginal hand. Generally poker limping is used by beginner level players with the intention to check the other players’ reactions before investing a big amount on the table. Pro players usually avoid using poker limping because they know that others’ reactions will be observed more accurately if they raise. When a player in the earlier hands chooses to limp, they are easily caught by better players and make the situation advantageous for them. Therefore, the “limp” poker term is used to express a weak and passive strategy.
Why is to limp in poker considered a poor strategy? Many players tend to judge other players when they start seeing them using poker limping on their table. There are some valid reasons for considering it a weak strategy. ❏
Players who choose to limp in poker are the ones who are weak and passive. If a player wants to win a
hand, he/she must play aggressively and this is done when they select a different pre flop hand. Having a weak and passive style automatically forces you towards getting bullied and so your chances of winning also lower. ❏
Poker limping will tell the better players that you have a weaker hand and you want to enter the pot
with the cheapest value. So, a table having better players will eventually isolate your limp and steal pot after pot in front of your eyes. ❏
The odds won’t be on your side if you choose to limp in poker. This might include the position, pre flop
lead, hand strength and ability. You won’t have a positional advantage and thus, you won’t be considered a better player if you are limping. Limp in poker meaning tells us that it is a weak strategy which makes post flop games harder for you. It lowers your winning percentage and you might be bluffed too. If you are adopting this style, you yourself are held responsible for the better players abusing (figuratively) you in the game. However, some professional players have used poker limping in the past as a part of their strategies, it is rarely profitable and therefore you must avoid using it as much as possible.
