Can I Stop My Dog Eating Off The Street From 101 Training Tips for Your Dog – by Kate Delano Condax Most dogs, unless taught never to do it, will attempt to pick up and eat food they find on the streets when you walk them. It is very important to teach your dog never to do this. In addition to spoiled food, poisoned food in and around garbage pails is all too easy for a dog to find and eat. There have been instances, not as infrequent as you might assume, of people deliberately putting up poison with the intention of harming dogs. All it takes is one such encounter to spell the end of your dog. Teach your dog, when walking at your side in heel position, or when you had said “okay” to allow him to make full use of the length of the leash, not to pick up anything with his mouth. The moment your dog attempts to pick up something from the street, pulled straight upward on the leash, to lift his feet right off the ground so his front paws are several inches from the ground and at the same time pull the food or object, disgusting though it might be, out of his mouth.

You may have to open his jaws by placing your hand, palms down, across the bridge of his nose and bending his dewlaps (lip skin) against his teeth, pressing until it hurts enough for him to open his mouth. He will not be able to bite you while you are holding him up in the air. It is essential that you make the experience very unpleasant for him. Hold him up for about 6 to 8 seconds even though you have removed the food from his jaws and throw it out of reach. Then let him down, and say loudly “No” again. Give him a sharp jerk on the leash as you say the command, to emphasize the point. Again approach the piece of food, but do not get close enough for the dog to grab it. (He may try again.) While you hold him a couple of feet from the object, jerk on the leash and say once more “No”. If he shows any inclination to go after the object, lift him up again as before, and hold them there for five or six seconds. By the second time, he should have gotten the message loud and clear: he must never pick up food from the street. If you are dog lowers his ears and flattens them somewhat against his head, he shows he is submitted to your wishes. However, if he still perks his ears up and strains towards the food, he has not accepted your command, and you need to repeat the lesson until he’s does show submission. While walking your dog, keep an eye out for possible temptations. Say “No” before you reach the food, and reminded dog with a sharp jerk on the lease before you get close enough for him to pick something up. Then walk past with the dog in heel position. Note: In towns and suburbia, a different problem relating to eating on the street confronts dogs. In spring, dogs eat grass, which mixes with excess stomach acid in their stomachs. Dogs then vomit this, getting rid of the acid. Stopping your dog eating off the street is important so make sure her or she understands not to do it.
