Practice Book Example - Camera Book

What are camera words? Your child is learning to read and spell using a synthetic phonics approach. This approach teaches children to read and spell using their knowledge of phonemes. However, not all words that children will need at this stage in their learning can be decoded easily. This means that some irregular, high frequency words (sometimes called ‘tricky’ words) need to be learned a little differently at first. We call these words camera words. These camera words have been selected because they occur frequently in children’s reading and writing but are not easily decoded at this stage in your child’s learning.

How to use this book 1) The reading photo pages Remember the first reading strategy your child should be using is his/her knowledge of phonemes and how these can be blended to read a word. You will need to help him/her with the irregular/tricky part. First of all, are there any phonemes that your child already knows? Tell him/her the rest of the phonemes needed to make the word and blend them into the word. 2) The spelling instruction pages Follow the parent script to help your child learn to spell these irregular words. Do remember that spelling camera words is harder than reading them and is not likely to develop as quickly. 3) Read it! Spell it! After completing all the photo and spelling pages throughout the book, move on to the Read it! Spell it! page. First ask your child to read the list of words as quickly and as accurately as possible. The aim here is for your child to be able to read each word automatically without sounding out. Next, make sure that your child cannot see the words. Read each word clearly and ask your child to spell the word.
