How to use this book During the week your child has been learning the phonemes (sounds) on page 2. Ask your child to point to each letter and say the phoneme. It is important that the phoneme is pronounced accurately so that it can be blended into a word easily. When your child can do this; move on to reading the decodable words on pages 3-12. Encourage your child to blend the phonemes together, then to say the whole word. If your child gets stuck, a gentle reminder of the phoneme that each letter represents will help. Then run your finger along the word and say it out loud.
Pronouncing the phonemes It is important to pronounce each of the phonemes in the correct way. In this book the phonemes being practised are: Phoneme

Read it! Spell it! When your child has read the book a number of times, move on to the Read it! Spell it! page. First ask your child to read the list of words as quickly and as accurately as possible. The aim here is for your child to be able to read each word automatically without sounding out. Next, make sure that your child cannot see the words. Read each word clearly. Then ask your child to spell the word ensuring that each phoneme is said out loud as it is written.

The books start at word level to grow confidence in word level reading before moving on to the complexities of a story.
cat
sat The books include high frequency words, e.g. ‘cat’ and ‘sat’, and many unusual words, e.g. ‘gas’ and ‘tag’. This ensures a child does not rely on recognising the word and must use decoding as the first strategy.
tap There are no picture clues; this discourages guessing. It’s no use having a picture of a tap; reading then becomes a game of ‘spot what’! A very unreliable method!
The more unusual words are a great opportunity to expand vocabulary and a useful stimulus for discussion.
gas
mop
The words chosen will use: CVC (Consonant Vowel Consonant), CV (Consonant Vowel) or VCC (Vowel Consonant Consonant) patterns and every word is decodable. This reliability gives children lots of confidence as they quickly read their first books by themselves.
pop
top
The books have fidelity, which means no unknown phonemes will be introduced. If a child has only learned eight phonemes, there is no use presenting the 24th phoneme! Children enjoy the success they can achieve where every phoneme has been taught!

Fluency is an important part of skilled reading. It is a good idea to ask children to read each of the words as fast as possible; this way the skills become automatic.
