What are some tasks of an A&R when putting together an artist album? Picking the producers, songwriters & feature appearances on the album, Selecting songs for the artist, making sure the recording process goes smoothly, books studio time, is responsible for making sure the songs are recorded, mixed & mastered, creating recording budgets, A&R is in charge of making sure the album is completed & delivered to the label.

How many artists can an A&R work with in his/ her label? It varies. It can be 1 or 10. it depends on how many artists & A&Rs are at the company.

How important is an artist image when it comes to getting signed? It is important. A&Rs are looking for stars, someone to stand out from a crowd, someone who is unique, fresh & new. The image should be a reflection of the music it should be part of the overall “story” of the artist.

Signing Sessions Who are you? And where you from? My name is Ex representing Harlem , New York. What is your style of music? I’m more of a laid back dude, you know what I mean. Most of the time, I listen to R&B when I’m home. I don’t even listen to a lot of Hip–Hop when it comes to writing great music. When I first started, I was more of an aggressive type; I mastered that part of the game. My main focus is to be more of an incredible songwriter. When I write a song, I know its nothing to me.

a lot of creditable people. Ron Browz is one of my major accomplishments. I’ve opened up for a lot of known artist like, DMX and Black Street. I mean, I’ve been blessed because I also wrote a song for the Rucker Park Tournament.. Harlem Stand up. Is there anything else you want to add? Myspace.com/Exprohustler, SonicBid. com,exprohustler@ youtube and you can google me. Im just thankful to be hustling now and getting my buzz up online.

Who are you? And where you from? What’s up yall! It’s your boy Johnny Dough representing Newark, New Jersey. I am out here doing my thing and trying to “Get Signed”. I just came up from Texas- touring and getting my name up in this game.

What is your style of music? I am very versatile. I am laid back, but I still get at people. I’m the type of person that loves to live life, and I put that towards all of the music I produce. On the other hand, I can be very “grimy”

If you had the chance to pick what label to sign with, whom would you pick? And why? Right now, Im working on it. I’ve received a few offers before. As we speak, I’m more focused on getting my music right and doing my thing. It makes no sense to get signed when I don’t have my buzz up for the industry. My plan is to work on my craft, its not about the money because I’m definitely not struggling.

Johnny Dough and “gutter” which gives people the best of both worlds.

If you had the chance to pick any label to sign with, which would you pick? And why?

What made you want to get into this industry? My inspiration came from artist like Nas, Marvin Gaye, huge fan of Marvin Gaye, grew up listening to him because my mom would play his tunes all the time. I just love the passion that music had in the ninety’s. What exposure have you had so far? I’ve been blessed with a lot of exposure. I’ve had the chance to perform at many major spots and worked with

Any label? Really, I’m about my paper so it’s like I would stay with the Goon Tunes. If I were to get a distribution deal, I would make sure everyone gets paid through that.

Why would you go to with those major powerhouses? Their marketing is crazy!!! They push their artists to the limit. For example, Universal, they have Lil’ Wayne that they push hard. They reach out to all major stores, websites, and clubs to promote just him. Def Jam also goes crazy, especially because they got Jay Z, and we all know how popular he became.

What made you want to get into this industry? I have been doing this forever. Back in the day, we would sit around and rap to Wu-Tang. We picked up on our own after that and developed our style. I have doing this for about ten years- just rapping. About four years ago, I decided to take the game seriously and ran with one of my “mans” who showed me the ropes and how to go about getting into the industry.

What exposure have you had so far? You can also go on iTunes and Emusic to hear my music. I’m out there baby! Google me: Goon Tunes Ent. or Johnny Dough, and trust me your ears will pop. w w w. s o u n d c l i c k . co m / Johnnydough sundowner_ent@hotmail. com

For those who don’t know, I am an R&B artist from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn (currently living in Bushwick). Holla at me! BK all day! You know!!!

I have performed at a lot of showcases throughout the city and the Bronx. I have done Hot 97 Monse’s Monday night showcase, as well as the Commonwealth, up in the Bronx, which was in the same venue. nycole valentina The 18 year old singer/songwriter latched onto her dream at an early age. Unable to ignore the insatiable love of music coursing through her veins, she sought one opportunity after another, hoping to land in the right place at the right time. Eventually, she did just that. A native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and raised in Miami, Florida, Nycole was singing before she could tie her shoelaces. “I remember being about four years old at Disney World,” she says, “and walking straight up to Mickey Mouse and singing ‘It’s my party, I’ll cry if I want to’.” Some seven years later Nycole would find herself working professionally, mostly recording demos for Roy Jones’ Bodyhead Entertainment. “I would sit in my room and sing and dance around as if I was on stage,” she recalls. “Finally someone heard me sing and sent me to record a song at Bodyhead Entertainment. I’ve been addicted ever since.” Who are you? And where you from? My name’s Nycole Valentina and I’m from Miami, FL. I recently moved to Atlanta, GA to further persue music. But I’ll always be a Florida girl. What is your style of Music? High energy, dance. Pop/R&B. I love music that makes you move. If you had the chance to pick what label major label to sign with, whom would you pick? And why? There’s a lot of different labels that I’d like to be on, all for different reasons. Who wouldn’t like to be signed to Mosley Music Group and work with Timbaland

all day long?? Every place has there perks and flaws. I just hope that, God willing, what ever label I end up signing to is the best label for me. What made you want to get into this industry? Music. I’ve loved music since I was a little girl. Songs with meaning. Artists that took chances. I remember watching Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson (R.I.P. to my idol) videos when I was younger... always trying to mimic every move. That passion made me want to be in this industry.

What exposure have you had so far? I’ve been blessed to be able to do a lot of shows in New York and other parts of the country. One main show being MTV’s TRL, before it ended its run last November. It was an absolutely amazing experience. Also, I am in talks for a European tour for late 2009. Mostly, my Myspace has been huge for me. It started everything, really. Where can we find out more about you, listen to your music? The Myspace, of course. www.myspace. com/nycolevalentina. Also my twitter account is where you can find out, on a day to day basis what exactly I’m up to www.twitter.com/nycolevalentina

Is there anything else you want to add? Thanks so much to everyone at Get Signed Magazine for the opportunity. My management team Gene “Champ” Maney and A.R... Armando Colon and J.P... and of course, all of my fans. How did you feel when you heard about the MJ death? And was he an influence on ur music? His passing was actually very hard for me. He and Janet were always artists and people that I looked up to a great deal. I had friends I hadn’t spoken to in years calling me because they knew it would have a great effect. He’s in a better place, I know. It’s hard for every artist, I’m sure, to have lost not only such a great entertainer, but also a great man. Through his music, he lives on. Rest In Peace, Michael.

THE

Je

BEHIND

“RABBIT”

Tell us where your from & who is Jessica Rich? I’m from Grand Rapids, Michigan born and raised moved to NYC in September ’06. Jessica Rich is a TV personality also known as “Rabbit” from “Real Chance of Love” and she is also a model and actress. She is down to earth, driven and very outgoing who doesn’t take no for an answer.

Was being in Black Men magazine, your first mens magazine feature?

What’s coming up next for Ms Jessica Rich in the 09-2010 year?

No, I had been in Black Men’s Magazine when I first moved to NYC. I was in the feb/march 2007 issue.

I’m wondering myself. I have so many talents, I feel, and I’m kind of at the cross roads of where I want to go. I want my own reality show to show viewers what make me such an all around character and also it can let people into my life from who I’m dating, where I’m shopping and the relationship with my friends and family as well. I like to be a role model for girls and guys. I feel I set a good example on “Real Chance of Love” being grounded and standing up for yourself people always write me and say that I was the first of that kind on reality tv. I am also getting more into acting. I know I won’t be satisfied in life if I’m not on the big screen. I enjoy the spotlight and being on camera, it’s always been my dream. Finally, I’m working on a ring tone campaign where people can download my voice.

What made you audition for “Real Chance of Love”?

What Projects did you do that allowed you to work with artist such, as Jim Jones, Fabolous & LL cool J?

Well I was single at the time and I figured why not give it a shot, not thinking I’d really get picked. Sure enough they told me I was the #1 pick from the NYC area.

I worked on the videos “Emotionless” with Jim Jones and also “Pop Champagne” with LL Cool J. I worked on the video “Baby” and yes he is so fine. I also was in Fabolous’ video “Return of the Hustle” but wasn’t as good because the director did not show much of our scene.

What are some of your memories you will keep with you from the show?

How long have you been modeling? I started modeling back in 2005. My first gig was at a Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Contest at this bar I worked at and won, from there I went on to state finals where I got 2nd place. I was very surprised because I was the only black girl in the contest and I stole 2nd place…hehe God is good.

This tattoo on my foot I got on the show is a memory for sure! And I like it because when I look down it’s kinda like “Yes this is what made me Rabbit forever” lol and also I can’t forget the stress and drama involved in filming a reality show and the life changing experience it gives you

Do you still talk any of the girls from the show? Yes, I’m good friends with Cali and I also stay in touch with Bubbles, Bay Bay, Kiki and Risky

Congrats on shooting the Pilot “ Road to Riches “, tell us a little about the shows concept? Basically, I was the producer of the mini show, I basically wanted a show like the hills but the urban version of it. I feel if Lauren Conrad can do it, why can’t I? I have an image that can cross sell in all markets, black and white and being able to do that is hard. An African American

girl living in NYC with no family and striving for her dreams says a lot to me and I feel it would be a good concept for TV. After all, anyone can get a show these days.

Is this going to be aired on VH1 or a different Network? I am seeking someone to pick up the concept or someone who has another idea for me. I’m open to all reality show ideas, after all they created the lives of Lauren Conrad on “The Hills” as well as “The City” on MTV, it wasn’t really reality, it was scripted, which is fine to me.

Where can the readers check out more about you? WWW.MYSPACE.COM/RABBITFROMVH1 WWW.TWITTER.COM/RABBITAKAJRICH OR ON FACEBOOK JUST GOOGLE IT.

This issue we are doing a tribute to Michael Jackson, as a kid growing up what did his music mean to you? I had a lot of respect for him, he was very talented at a young age and his music was so amazing.

All the men out there wants to know, is Rabbit single? Yes, I’m sooo sick of guys who like to play games. I’m looking for a real down to earth, fine guy who isn’t about himself, full of it, who knows how to treat a girl and who is driven and isn’t cheap.

Any Last words you want to say to all the “Rabbit “ aka Jessica Rich Fans? I LOVE ALL OF MY Fans & Shout-out to Get Signed magazine …THANKS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT AND KEEP ME GOING XOXOXO

ithout a doubt, these are troublesome times for the music business. The old business model is failing, as many have said time and time again over the past few years. In the past, artists needed support from the major labels to distribute their work because it cost so much to do so; and in return the labels got to do whatever they wanted to with that art.

So how is an artist to survive? If the labels cannot sustain, how can you? Here are a few ideas every artist needs to consider.

You gave up control in order to make the dream come true. Sacrifice. And the labels maintained that control; until the Internet, of course.

The walls of the industry are crumbling down. And as with any demise of an old way of thinking, a new one will rise into prominence.

how you use it will determine

It may not be all clean sheets, incense, and puffy pillows for many, but it is an opportunity for everyone else. Whether or not you decide to take advantage on this opportunity is up to you.

How do you sell the music? Assuming you don’t have any major label support, you’re probably not going to have ditional compact disc. That’s okay, because you don’t have you do have is the ‘Net, and your success.

Many just throw their album on iTunes and expect it to sell. That would be the same as having a CD buried in the aisles of Best Buy with out any advertising. No, what you need to do is much, much more than that. You’ve got to let people HEAR your music. No label = no radio! So you’ve got to give them a taste by giving the music away.

Many are talking about the new FREE music model and how it’s all the rage and what not. This is the future of music. It is, however, going to take some time to catch on. So what you need to do in the mean time is become part of the transition. Another thing that needs to be address is the file format of your music. You don’t want to turn off a potential fan by limiting the types of file formats (and using strictly iTunes is doing just that!) You’ve got give them all the options, and do so without any restrictions. NO DRM!

So how should you distribute your music, and still make a buck?

Simple. You still take the established route by getting your music on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, etc. You’ll make some change from these because of the large and established user base. You’ll probably want to throw in other exclusive extras like photos, merchandise, or some other content (videos, behind-the-scenes, interviews, individual track masters, re-mixes, the list goes on and on!) You do this all for a reasonable price under $10.00. Of course you still have to get the word out about your music, but once people get to your website and hear it, they’ll be 1000 times more inclined to purchase an album then if they just had to guess weather you’re good enough or not. After you start making a name for yourself, then you can maybe crank out some traditional CD’s to sell to the record shops or fans that might want them. If you’re smart, you also look into getting that album on vinyl as it increases in popularity. This is the transition from the old to the new. Eventually, it will all be given away for free and you’ll make all of your money off of advertising, merchandising, touring, etc. Getting to that point is going to take time and effort.

And unless you don’t let the fans hear the music right from the get-go, you’re never going to make it. Someone else will.

Moonwalk Magic by Pearson Lee

I racked my brain to find two words to describe Michael Jackson. Why? Because all I do is sit and think of different ways to put words to paper. I scribbled, Gloved One. Wow factor. Always ready. Blah Blah. Boring. Then I decided on Moonwalk Magic. The first time I saw Michael Jackson glide backward across the stage, seemingly weightless, I was awestruck! I had to learn this magical dance. Not because I thought I’d win a prize for doing it, but because I, too, wanted to be magical. Magic, of course, requires a lot of work. It requires practice. It requires discipline. It requires the thrill of surprise and an unexpected twist. So, I spent hours in my socks, gliding across the kitchen floor to perfect it. I moonwalked to the sink. I moonwalked

to the fridge. I moonwalked away from my mom who was surprised to see the blackened sock bottoms show up in the laundry basket. If I had to get an unexpected beating because I wanted to master the magic, then let it be so. Get Signed reader, are you capable of magic? Can you take your audience to a place where they will practice your dance moves all day and night? Will your fans hum your songs to start the day? Will they write your verses in the back of their notebooks? Make it their Facebook status? Will they remember you in twenty years?

Will you eat, sleep and breathe your talent? Will you do what it takes to get that magic?

Let’s put you in the penny loafers of the greatest entertainer of all time and see how tough you really are. Imagine being six years old. And every afternoon instead of Red light, Green light 123, your day begins with ‘5,6,7,8’ – your cue to begin performing with your broth-

ers as a backup musician, vocalist and dancer. Then two years later, you – little MJ, along with your brother Jermaine become the lead vocalist and the group is renamed the Jackson 5. All Jackson 5 of you, get packed up in Papa Joe’s car–elbows and knees hitting soft body parts–in order to tour the chitlin circuit; where sometimes cigarette smoke replaces the dust from the playground and first kisses are maybe fifteen years in the past for most of the patrons. Your older brothers may be enjoying it, but maybe a little TV would be nice. Still, it is practice and it is exposure that leads to a big win at a local talent show and a big record deal. After you and your brothers are signed to Motown Records in 1968, your group, the Jackson 5, set a record of four singles to peak at number one on the Billboard charts. The singles “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There” have made you famous! Everyday, there’s a show. Everyday, there’s a taping. An interview. One for television, one for radio. But you can’t stop there. Everyone is expecting more.

Michael Jackson Tribute Are you tired yet, Get Signed Reader? Have you hung up your microphone? Put the penny loafers back in the box? No? Good! You just may be ready for this. May. Be. By 1975, after having released five more singles, including, “Got to Be There”, “Ben” and “Dancing Machine” you and your brothers leave Motown Records - the company that launched your career - in order to sign with the label that would become Epic Records. Your group name changes again - to The Jacksons - and for the next nine years you tour the world promoting the six albums you’ve recorded – which includes your solo album Off the Wall. At the same time, you are also starring in the musical The Wiz. Wipe the sweat off your brow, reader. We’re just warming up! Although Off the Wall is widely received, and has earned you American Music Awards, a

Billboard Award and a Grammy, it is not enough. You set your sights on creating a greater album. One that no one can resist. In 1982, you make good on that promise to outdo yourself and you present the appropriately named, biggest selling album of all time: Thriller. No one in this world has ever been able to sell more records. But it’s hard work promoting the seven singles, including “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” and “The Girl Is Mine” with Paul McCartney. It’s grueling. Yet, you find time to appear with your brothers in the Motown25 special and debut the Moonwalk to the world and then appear in a Pepsi commercial that puts you in the hospital! And even after, suffering second degree burns, the show must go on! “We Are the World”, a chart-topping charity song co-written with Lionel Richie, is released. It is dedicated to ending famine in Africa. By 1987, the world is introduced to your latest album, Bad, which

yields seven more singles, including, “Bad”, “Man in the Mirror”, and “Dirty Diana”. The Bad World Tour is launched and it’s time to be on the road again. Somewhere along the line, you find time to write your autobiography, Moon Walk, and in 1988 it is released to the public, where it tops The New York Times bestseller’s list. Dangerous, your eighth album, and the most successful new jack swing album of all time, is released in 1991, changing the scope of your fans yet again. New Jack Swing, created by Teddy Riley is a sound that is very popular with the urban audience. “Remember the Time” spends eight weeks in the top five of the Billboards Hot 100 singles. The Dangerous World Tour kicks off. In 1992, you create the Heal the World Foundation for underprivileged children that involves the use of your home at Neverland Ranch; bring national attention to the plight of a young HIV/ AIDS victim named Ryan White; and

Michael Jackson Tribute receive the Living Legend Award at the Grammy’s. In the mean time, public charges and accusations are rampant, but you persevere and release your ninth album HIStory, which spawns the hit single and video “Scream”, featuring your sister Janet Jackson. The single rages back against the attacks on your character and at the same time receives a Grammy nomination. The second single, “You Are Not Alone”, written by R. Kelly is also released and warmly received by the fans. In 1999, your list of charities grows again, to include the Kosovo refugees, children of Guatemala, Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund and The Red Cross which eventually lands you in the Guinness Book of World Records. Despite court proceedings against your record label, in the year 2001, the Rodney Jerkins produced album Invincible is released much to your fans’ delight. In conjunction with releasing this album and celebrating your thirtieth year as a solo artist, for the first time in seventeen years, you perform with your brothers at Madison Square Garden. The singles, “You Rock My World” and “Butterflies” - collaborations with Jay Z and Floetry, respectively – are released. Invincible is a commercial success, going on to sell ten million copies worldwide. Although it does not hit the high sales marks of previous albums it shows you to be someone that does his best to stay current and reach different audiences. In 2006, you are presented with a Diamond Award at the World Music Awards for selling more than one hundred million albums and in following years, Thriller is re-released as Thriller 25 to celebrate its 25 year anniversary. In 2009, you begin rehearsal for a 50 date concert in London. Talk of your retirement is on the table, but before you bow out, you put your all into putting on the final shows of your career. shows the world that you are still pushing the envelope and pushing yourself to the limits to offer an excellent presentation. Whew! Aren’t you tired yet? I know I would be. But even if Michael Jackson was, he never let it stop him from sharing with the world. Get Signed Reader, would you walk in these really big shoes to the very end? Would you brave the scrutiny of the public? Would you ignore physical ailments in order to share your gifts? Would you reinvent yourself by working with new artists, in order to keep up with what’s new, hot and hip? Michael Jackson took his craft, status and philanthropy very seriously. Each time he performed, he highlighted his signature moves, although he always had a desire to generate something new. His routines were perfected, his singing was coached and well practiced. Just watching the footage from the rehearsal on the day before his death, everything he did seemed effortless, or dare I say magical, because the hard work and practice made it so. Until the end, Michael Jackson was determined to give the best that he had. He was determined to give us that magic. Get Signed Reader, maybe you won’t get your socks dirty like I did, but the best way to pay tribute to the greatest entertainer of all time is to study how devoted he was to reinventing himself, to understand that hard work is how he got that magic, to translate the magic into your blueprint for success, and making that magic work for you. Rest in Peace, Michael Jackson Pearson Lee is a guest contributor at Get Signed Magazine and the author of Rabbit’s Lucky Number. She hails from Brooklyn, NY.

Tatt-it-Up

Tiffany Perez

Tell us who you are and where you’re from? My name is Tiffany Perez, I’m twenty-two years old and I’m from Patterson New Jersey. How long have you been doing tattoos? I’ve been tattooing for about two years but professionally for one year. When I first got the machine (tattoo gun), I started in my house and learned it that way because I have never seen anyone get a tattoo done, so I never new what I was doing. As I was home, I did a lot more research to find out how to put tattoos on people professionally. One day, luckily, I got a call from my cousin who told me he has a friend who works at a tattoo shop and looking for an apprentice to work there, and that’s where I learned to do tattoos. So what made you want to become a tattoo artist? I never actually thought I would get into anything like this until my father mentioned it to me. As a child, he noticed that I was always into the art of drawing and the idea came to him that I should try tattooing. So for my birthday, he bought me the machine for tattooing and that got me into it.

How long have you been drawing for? I’ve been drawing ever since I was two years old, so for twenty years I’ve been drawing. Where do you see yourself in the future? Becoming well known as a great tattoo artist. At first, I studied to become an art teacher, once I realized that doing tattoos was my calling I continued to do that, especially when I did another tattoo and the money was right, I knew this is what I wanted to do. Hopefully, in the future, I can own my own business.

Do you have a particular style of tattooing? I get all types of tattoos but I’m trying to specialize more on portrait and more realistic type of tattoos. My style is unique because I’m new to the tattoo world and my designs are getting better and better as I progress. I’m more of a neat and clean type of artist that most of my clients enjoy. You can say I’m a perfectionist when I do my tattoos.

Like I said before, I like realistic type-tattoos such as flowers and portraits etc. and I specialize in that type of style.

Where have you put your craziest tattoos? I tattooed a butt and behind the ear. People usually get it in the known spots for tattoos but those are the craziest locations. If someone wanted to get something in a private spot I would do it, a little uncomfortable, but I would charge more for it. At the end of the day tattoos is my job and I will do it anywhere a customer prefers. What’s the name of the tattoo shop and do you have tattoos? I’ve done a lot of tattoos and believe it or not, I have “No Tattoos” on my body. My shop is called Rider Ink, and I work Monday to Friday, 12pm -9pm, and on the weekends I work from 12pm-11pm.

Street Grindin’ Listen to the streets... ...it’s talking

N.A.B. - What is DUMOUT? Mazaradi Fox- Dumout is a record label I started in 2006. Me and Steve used to do dumb stuff but it always came out successful. If you look at the logo, you see two sides of Mazi, The Good Side and Bad Size of Mazi.

N.A.B. - How did you link up with 50 Cent? Mazaradi Fox- We grew up together. My Moms and his Moms grew up together doing what they did. We’re from the same hood. I did a 8 year bid; when I came home I started my production company. I was out here grinding, rapping, going in with the promotion, going hard. Next thing you know 50 Cent came through and picked me up in his Phantom. Cause I started buzzing so much, the first mix tape I did was with Love Dinero and the first DVD I did was with Dre Most “Hood Affairs”-R.I.P. Next thing you know I was signed to G-Unit.

N.A.B. - Word is you received 3 Million for your deal. Can you elaborate? Mazaradi Fox- They meant overall I received 3 million. Mazi received 1.8 Million and 1.2 million went towards the label Dumout, so all together was 3 mill.

N.A.B. - That’s a hell of a deal. How much creative control you do actually have?

Mazaradi Fox - Dumout dy also. They say he a crook and stole some artist money, but if you have a good accountant you should be good.

N.A.B. - Are you working on any new projects and when can we expect the DUMOUT project? Mazaradi Fox- I got a whole new building for the studio, so we getting it in. We have a Dumout compilation coming out soon through Universal. I have an artist named Christie Couture and another female named Candy Girl. That’s my new Missy Elliot. I also have an artist in KC, Missouri and Mississippi.

Mazaradi Fox- I have full control. Full creative control of my artistry.

N.A.B. - Give the world a visual of why they should purchase the MAZARADI FOX album.

N.A.B. - Do you have a title or release date for your album yet?

Mazaradi Fox- I have lots of great features. Every feature I have on my album is dominating in there field. Outside of that, I want to show the world where Mazi is from.

Mazaradi Fox- A Hustlers Dream- Dec 16, 2009

N.A.B. - We noticed that you have loads of collab’s. Kool G. Rap, Frenchie, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, 50 Cent, Gilly Da Kid, Uncle Murda, and Maino. Is there someone you haven’t worked with yet that you would like to work with in the future? Mazaradi Fox- Yeah, Jay Z. You know why? I respect Jay because he lived in the era. He doesn’t try to impress hip hop. He just does what he does, get his money, and keep it moving. Puff Dad38  Get Signed Magazine   August–September 2009

N.A.B. - Do you want to give any shout outs? Mazaradi Fox- The whole G-unit, 50 Cent, you are a great mentor, the entire Dumout Family, Dumout South. Shout out to you, A.D. The General, N.A.B., and the entire world. Written By: A.D. the General and Ms. FeFe (N.A.B.) www.myspace.com/adthegeneral www.myspace.com/msfefe

Street Grindin’

A.D., I know you also have The Elegant Hoodness Musical Program, going on 5 years strong. What is your most memorable moment at Elegant Hoodness?

N.A.N.

A.D. The General & The Gifted Please tell the world who or what is N.A.N.? N.A.N.: N.A.N is a way of life. We believe in the concept of “NOTHING”. Everything you want to achieve in live is NOTHING. Create your game plan and attack life head on; it’s NOTHING. We also believe we were born with nothing and we will die with nothing.

How long has N.A.N. been in existence? N.A.N.: 2003-04 to the present

I see you guys are a male/female rap duo. How do you feel it benefits and takes away from your music? N.A.N.: We don’t feel it takes away at all from our music. It actually brings balance to our music. We are able to share two sides of the story. Along with our combined passion and desire to share the truth with our peers and youth alike all over the world. The combined strength of two strong MCs: one man, one woman- no gimmicks, just real music.

Congratulations on the UMA nomination for The Most Original Rap Group/Duo! How do you feel about the nomination? N.A.N.: Thank You. It feels good to be recognized and nominated period. We are glad to be in the most Original Group Category. We are one of the first female/male rap duos in NY.

Are there any other male/female rap duo’s you know of? If so, how do you two differentiate yourselves from the average duo? N.A.N.: EBELL STAR, we really like them, they have a great attitude about music and life. There is never any animosity between us. As far as differentiating ourselves from the average duo, the average duo is a gimmick. Usually manufactured by a label or some marketing executive. N.A.N has had to deal with life & death situations to continue to be N.A.N. Our music speaks for itself, our grind speaks for itself, and our stage performance speaks for itself, so there’s not much to worry about, except making great music for the world to enjoy. At the end of the day that’s N.A.N’s goal.

N.A.N.: Yes, wow, so many memories. Every Elegant Hoodness is a memorable experience. One of the most memorable moments was in 06’; we managed to have over 500 hundred people come together peacefully. Gifted and I took over a local school yard in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. We build a stage out of scrap wood, borrowed electricity from the cousin down the block. Ran the electricity down a hundred foot extension cord for the DJ and we had a concert. We rocked till midnight no police involved.

Shouts to Boe Skagz, Agallah Bishop, The A- Alikes, Def Jam and all who held me down that day. I know you went to Miami as well. Do you plan on hitting any other states this year to brand your Elegant Hoodness name? N.A.N.: Yes of course, we look forward to Elegant Hoodness CT, NJ, PA, VA, StL, Missouri, and we will be returning to Miami.

You have the street album “Miller Time” circulating in the streets right now. What else are you guys working on? Will there be solo projects as well? N.A.N.: Correct, “Miller Time” is currently out; with over 5000 sales, 1000 giveaways, 14 original tracks, and 6 industry instrumentals. We are finishing up another street album, and the official N.A.N album as well. Solo projects, yes for both of us-we looking at working on a double album.

What is the goal for N.A.N.? N.A.N.: The goal is to finish what we started, and to work hard and enjoy life. We would also like to travel the world, spreading our definition of “Nothing”.

Anything else you would like to say? N.A.N.: Yes, we want to thank team N.A.N. & N.A.B. for holding N.A.N down. Thanks to all the haters for keeping N.A.N relevant in the streets. The supporters which we representhope you voted N.A.N. “You’ve Tried Everything, Now Try Nothing!” Change is going to come! Street Grindin’ What producers would you like to work with in the studio? Swizz Beats, Kanye West, Perimo, and I also want to work with up and coming producers. I feel they have a lot of creative energy. I like the new breed.

How has life change since signing with Grind Season? Great! I feel at home with Grind Season. I’ve been going from VIP to VIP rooms, getting a lot of love. I know there’s a lot more to come so I’m being humble all the way.

Which female you think is the hottest right now, as far as model chicks? Keri Hilson. I think she is bad right now.

Baby Boi Nate Tell the readers about Baby Boi Nate and where you are from. Fresh out of Brooklyn, you know, one of the most popular boroughs in New York City. A Fresh breath of air.

How long have you been rapping? I have been rapping for about 12 years, its creative and fun for me. I love when the people show appreciation for my songs.

Tell us about your “ I got it made” video; was that your first video shoot? Yea, basically that record had the flamboyant feeling from the 80’s with Special ED. I’m the “new breed”- something like a fresh breath of air- so I added a twist to it and gave it a lot more flavor.

What artist would like to work with in the future? Nas, Jay-Z, The Whole D Block, BB king, Rihanna, and Stevie Wonder.

Who inspires you the most when writing your music? I would say Snoop because his first album was so creative. Also, I would suggest that everyone to listen to the Dogg Pound album it if they haven’t yet.

We heard about your promo tour; can you tell us a little about that experience? I just finished doing this promo tour for my new single, “ Heavy in the Chevy”. That record is a down south record with my north style as always. I met with a lot of radio DJ’s and Club DJs and the feedback right now is on Great. I’ve also been getting radio airplay on it and only been out for a few weeks.

With your degree in marketing, do you feel that gives you an advantage over most artists when it pertains to new creative ways of reaching your fans? Yes, I would say so. Every time I write a song, I always have the frame of mind, “how are the fans going to take the song”. I definitely think of marketing companies for like Chevy, Ford, Nike and etc., who may hear the song. The song,“ Heavy in the Chevy” was written with marketing in mind- I reference a lot of companies in the track. I did it so stylish and artistic that people love the song.

What kind of artist would you like to be, make commercial hits for the money or one who just makes Good music even if you don’t hit platinum? Commercial for the money because I cant go either or because I’m going to sell records. I’m going in & I’m going hard. I want to take it back to the 90’s and go triple platinum, that’s the whole purpose rights, to sell records not settle for 50,000 copies.

Do you have any songs for the ladies? Oh yeah! Wait till I drop those records man, I am cocky! My tracks are Fire!

Any last words for the Get Signed Magazine readers? First of all, the album is going to drop first quarter of next year. You’re going to hear a lot of banging new joints from me even before the album hit stores. You are going to see lots of videos. The Grind Season family is straight and well connected. Look out for Baby Boi Nate, Grind Season, Red Giant. Check for me on: Myspace.com/Gsbabyboinate com/babyboi nate

Twitter.

Shout outs to Don “CEO of Everything”, Has, Gazellle, MCI, and Get Signed Magazine- We Coming !!!.

Any singles out right now? No singles out right now, but we have a new mix tape out called “American Dreamer -part two”. We have fourteen original songs on it with original beats. You can actually download this album on the Internet, MySpace, and Twitter at Rain910, and we are beating up the streets with the original copies.

Who have you worked with so far? I actually got a chance to work with Dr. Dre, and I would like to work with him again.

How about other artist? No, but I would like to work with Nas or Jay Z; I would like to mess with all the legends.

Who would you sign with?

Rain What’s your name and where you from? My name is Rain from North Carolina.

Since you are from North Carolina, did you experience any culture shock after arriving in New York City, with its fast paced life style? Not really, my parents are both from New York. My mother was brought up in the Bronx and my father is actually from here, Brooklyn. It was easy adapting because I would always visit my family here each summer

With your mix tape “ Only in America”, was that a turning point in your music career? That was actually my first mix tape and that helped me get my Internet presence up. I’ve been featured on a few sites, so that was a good look with that mix tape.

How did you come up with “Another day, another dollar’? “Another day, another dollar”, came out on my record label, which is “First in Flight Entertainment”, and that’s actually the first project I put out there. “7:30” and I are cool, and did tracks on the “Only in America” album;“7:30” is actually the guy from hip-hop beef.

As far as distribution, I would sign with Atlantic, Interscope, Universal, etc, big time labels. If Diddy came with that check, I would sign with him. What doesn’t work for one person will work for the other.

Do you do love music? I love it to death; I mean I wake up four o’clock in the morning to just write rhymes. I never thought music would make me any money so I just did it because I love it.

How has music changed your life, are you living your dream? I have been writing music since the age of nine, and at thirteen I took it serious. Since then, I’ve done a lot, from being on BET, MTV, and I performed on TRL and Rap City. This has been a blessing for me and I’m grateful for all the publicity I get. So technically I’m living my dream right now.

What do hip-hop mean to you? Life and poetry, that’s how I live. Everything I do is hip-hop. I‘m talking to you and that’s hip-hop. My tattoos with my hat on sideways, that’s hip-hop. My life is hip-hop.

www.twitter.com/rain910 www.myspace.com/rain910

Tell us about you on Smack DVD? Smack DVD is great, wow!!!! The day I did Smack, people noticed me from everywhere- we shot that video in the Bronx. I did Smack like two years ago and just did another drop last year. Two very hot videos for your eyes and ears.
