Geva Theatre Center is a not-for-profit theatre company dedicated to creating and producing professional theatre productions, programs, and services of a national standard. As Rochester’s flagship professional theatre, Geva Theatre Center is the most attended regional theatre in New York State, serving up to 160,000 patrons annually, including more than 16,000 students. Founded in 1972 by William Selden and Cynthia Mason Selden, Geva Theatre was originally housed in the Rochester Business Institute building on South Clinton Avenue. In 1982, Geva purchased and converted its current space – formerly the Naval Armory built in 1868 – and opened its new home in March 1985.

As one of the country’s leading theatre companies and a member of the national League of Resident Theatres, Geva produces an eclectic repertoire from musicals to American and world classics, drawing upon the talents of the country’s top actors, directors, designers and writers who are shaping the American Theatre scene. Geva Theatre Center operates two venues – the 552-seat Elaine P. Wilson Mainstage and the 180-seat Ron & Donna Fielding Nextstage, home to Geva Comedy Improv and Geva’s New Play Development Programs. In addition, the Nextstage hosts visiting companies of both local and international renown. Geva also offers a wide variety of educational, outreach and literary programs throughout the building and in the community. An active member of the Rochester community, Geva offers a multitude of opportunities for our audience and community members to engage with live theatre and the country’s best artists. Since the breadth of Geva’s programming cannot be sustained on ticket sales alone, this contribution to the region’s cultural, social and economic vitality is recognized by grants and charitable contributions from federal, state and local government agencies, national and local foundations, and businesses and individuals from throughout the region.

ARTISTIC & LITERARY HIGHLIGHTS

n Extraordinary Acting Ensemble Achievements – pinpoint farce in Perfect Wedding, powerful family desperation in A Raisin in the Sun, and harmonic convergence in Company

Indelible Individual Performances – Wade McCollum’s sensual vampire in Dracula, Skip Greer’s reclusive draft evader in Superior Donuts, Kristen Mengelkoch’s frazzled bride in Company n

n Imaginative Design – indoor/outdoor beauty of On Golden Pond, cinematic storytelling of Dracula, technical wizardry of A Christmas Carol, and heightened realism of A Raisin in the Sun

During the 2011-2012 season, Geva developed the work of 34 writers through our Festival of New Theatre, Plays in Progress Series, and (with our partners at Writers & Books) the 2 Pages/2 Voices and Regional and Young Writers Showcases. Altogether, audiences for these new play events exceeded 1,600 people. Playwrights included: Julie Marie Myatt, Molly Smith Metzler, John Cariani, Samuel D. Hunter, Michael Hollinger, Lauren Gunderson and David Andreatta.

n As an engagement activity connected with Superior Donuts, Geva collaborated with Writers & Books to co-produce a poetry reading featuring Rochester-area poets reading their own work and a poem from one of the ten African American poets included in the text of Superior Donuts. The local writers were: Reenah L. Golden, Chandra McKenzie, Arlette Miller-Smith, Vincent F.A. Golphin, Tokeya Graham, Grace Flores, Robert Ricks, Henry Ignacio Padrón-Morales, Steve Huff and Ralph Black. n

n Geva’s Summer Academy alumni appeared in productions across the country, with one former student returning home to play Belle in Geva’s A Christmas Carol. Among Academy alumni currently sharing their talents nationally are: n Kara Lindsay - on Broadway in Newsies, Geva’s A Christmas Carol n Chris Perfetti - performed in Sons of the Prophet by Stephen Karam at Roundabout Theatre Company in New York City (featured in American Theatre Magazine, February 2012) n Rachael Wallace - title role in national tour of Mary Poppins n Kyle Zingler - lead role in Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles’“Love” n Devised a successful new Student Matinee marketing plan fronted by artist driven educational e-blasts sharing ongoing artistic process.

This resulted in a run of five sold-out and well-received performances of A Raisin in the Sun – over 2,700 students from nearly 60 schools. These schools represented a cross-section of the entire Greater Rochester educational community, including city, suburban and rural schools, private schools and homeschool groups. n The Stage Door Project: Design. Students from 12 schools researched and developed their own design concepts for A Raisin in the Sun within their respective design fields (scenic, light, costume or sound). Students concluded the experience by meeting with Robert O’Hara, the director of A Raisin in the Sun, and his design team who critiqued their design work and offered support and suggestions for their future development.

The Hornets’ Nest, a play reading series of contemporary plays on controversial topics, included three sold-out performances of Mark St. Germain’s Freud’s Last Session, Bruce Graham’s Coyote on a Fence, and Bob Clymans’ The Exceptionals. Each play reading was followed by a facilitated discussion with members of the audience and an expert panel of “instigators” who represent opposing perspectives. n

AWARDS

n The literary department provided dramaturgical context to artists and audiences alike for Geva’s seven Mainstage productions through research packets, interactive lobby displays, the creation of Geva’s new blog (Geva Journal - gevajournal.wordpress.com) and program articles.

The Hornets’ Nest Festival of New Theatre Plays in Progress Regional Writers Showcase Young Writers Showcase

n Geva Theatre Center improved its operating results from an operating loss of ($704,753) in FY2011 to an operating loss of ($230,319) or 3.5% of functional expenses in FY2012.

For the first time since 2008, Geva achieved positive cash flow from operations in the amount of $107,348 for the year ended July 31, 2012, improving unrestricted working capital to ($1,327,281) or -2.3 months of operations.

n

Total cash operating revenue, support and releases increased 5.7%, and total operating expenses decreased 2.4%.

n

Much of the improvement was led by an 18.3% increase in unrestricted cash contributions, including a 20.7% increase in individual giving.

n

n Total ticket income increased 2.9% to $4,391,601 in FY2012 from $4,268,715 in FY2011.

Geva is in the quiet phase of a capital and endowment campaign, which raised $1,766,719 in cash and pledges in FY2012.

n

New contributions brought total endowment and quasi-endowment assets to $1,226,795 on July 31, 2012.

n

Geva implemented $684,319 in improvements to property and equipment, namely masonry restoration, window and door replacement and refurbishment, and technology.
