Gandhituin (‘Gandhi garden) can be found at the Hof van Noord subsistence garden complex. Half of the garden is made up of a sunny vegetable patch and the other half is a lush forested area suitable for a permaculture food forest. The garden is primarily a community garden where everyone is welcome to participate. The garden is also an educative centre. Hierbij worden natuurlijke ecosysteem zo goed mogelijk nagebootst en biologische methoden toegepast. Transition Towns Rotterdam, together with local residents, have transformed a former park near the Humanitas building on the Bergweg into a vegetable garden with fruit-laden trees and bushes. It also has vegetable patches. It is maintained according to the principles of permaculture. VOEDSEL FOOD Bewoners van Schiebroek-Zuid hebben woningcorporatie Vestia gevraagd om een aantal gemeenschappelijke tuinen om te vormen tot moestuinen. In de Vestiatuinen is plaats gemaakt voor landbouwgrond. In totaal zijn nu drie stukken grond in Moestuinen Schiebroek-Zuid (E1) gebruik voor stadslandbouw. 1 Hier is een mix van bomen, bloemen, groente en fruit. Residents of Schiebroek-Zuid asked the housing corporation Vestia to be able to convert a number of shared gardens into vegetable gardens. Vanuit deze gedachte Voedselbos Kralingen (H4) is de werkgroep Voedselbos 6 Kralingen ontstaan. Zo’n 18 vrijwilligers werken momenteel aan het verwezenlijken van het Voedselbos. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Rotterdam’s public spaces could turn green in a sustainable manner and if everything that is planted is edible, needs little maintenance and will last for generations? It was based on this idea that the working group Voedselbos Kralingen (‘Food Forest Kralingen’) was set up. De DakAkker functioneert als DakAkker Schieblock (E4) proefopstelling om te experi 8 menteren met verschillende manieren van groene daken. De Dakakker is naar idee en ontwerp van ontwerpbureau ZUS ontwikkeld in samenwerking met het Rotterdams Milieucentrum. De DakAkker is een van de deelprojecten van het Stadsinitiatief De Luchtsingel. In the city centre, on top of the Schieblock by the Schiekade, the first roof garden of the Randstad conurbation has been realised: the DakAkker (literally ‘roof field’). Here, vegetables, fruit and herbs are grown and honey bees are kept. TheDakAkker functions as a test set-up for experimenting with various types of green roofs. The Dakakker was developed from an idea and design by Design Bureau ZUS, in collaboration with the Rotterdam Milieucentrum (Rotterdam’s Environmental Centre). Deze restproducten werden tot nu toe weggegooid en verbrand in de vuilverbranding. RotterZwam wil koffiedik voor voedselproRotterzwam (G5) ductie gebruiken en juist pad 9 denstoelen produceren omdat ze 25 keer efficiënter dan vlees, voedingsstoffen omzetten. RotterZwam (a ‘zwam’ is a fungus) is Rotterdam’s own edible toadstool: fungus grown on coffee dregs and the remains of coffee beans! Until now, these waste products were thrown away and incinerated. RotterZwam wants to use coffee dregs to produce food and they have chosen to produce mushrooms because these convert nutrients 25 times more efficiently than meat does. www.rotterzwam.nl Vlakbij de Watertoren in de Kralingse wijk De Esch, waar vroeger het voormalige drinkwaterleidingterrein lag, is wijktuin de Esch te vinden. De tuin is er voor iedereen. Er worden educatieve lessen gegeven aan kinderen. Bij mooi weer worden Wijktuin De Esch (I6) etentjes georganiseerd voor en 10 door bewoners. En iedere woensdag zijn bewoners aan het werk met Max de Moestuinman. Iedereen is welkom om mee te werken. Tuin aan de Maas is er voor iedereen. De tuin is een “open tuin”, dat wil zeggen dat iedereen kan meewerken aan onderhoud, het is niet de bedoeling dat er eigen tuintjes worden aangelegd. The Tuin aan de Maas (‘garden on the Meuse’) is a wonderful location in the centre of Rotterdam, looking out over the open water of the Meuse at the Müllerpier, near the Euromast. Local residents enthusiastically and fanatically joined in to transform this location into a site for urban agriculture, a pick-your-own garden and a discovery garden for young and old. The Tuin aan de Maas is open to everyone. WATER Het Muizengaatje is de volksmondbenaming voor de nauwe doorgang onder het treinviaduct en de A20 aan de Noordrand van Rotterdam. Het terrein naast het Muizengaatje is een indrukwekkend gebied van Muizengaatje (F2) zo’n 7000 m² waar de draag 1 pilaren van de A20 met hun voeten in het water staan. Hier is een complex project gerealiseerd: de bouw van een rioolwateroverstort met tijdelijke berging. Kunst, kapitaal en wetenschap zijn hier gecombineerd. The Muizengaatje (‘mouse hole’) is what the locals call the narrow passageway under the train viaduct and the A20 motorway on the northern edge of Rotterdam. The region next to the Muizengaatje is an impressive area of about 7,000 m² in which the weight-bearing columns of the A20 are partially submerged under water. Here, a complex project has been realised: a sanitary sewer overflow system with temporary storage. It is a combination of art, capital and science. www.groenemetropolen.nl Open: altijd/always De inrichting van het Johan Idaplein in het Oude Noorden is bedacht met de buurt, jong en oud. Het plein is van en voor iedereen. Met veel groen én met een unieke oplossing voor het verwerken van schoon regenwater. Onder het plein liggen Johan Idaplein (F3) namelijk 1100 infiltratiekratten 2 die 360.000 liter regenwater uit de omgeving kunnen opvangen. Het schone regenwater gaat niet naar het riool, maar zakt langzaam de bodem in. Dit is goed voor de grondwaterstand in de buurt. The design for the Johan Idaplein in the Oude Noorden district was thought up together with both young and old local residents. The square belongs to everyone and is for everyone to use. It has plenty of green spaces and provides a unique solution for coping with clean rainwater. This is because beneath the square there are 1,100 infiltration crates capable of collecting 360,000 litres of the region’s rainwater. Voor de afvoer 3 wordt het water geleidelijk afgegeven aan zijn omgeving of het grondwater. Ook een incidenteel optredend watertekort in Overschie wordt met deze buffer opgelost. Dat water hoeft daardoor niet direct naar het riool, dat dus minder snel zal overstromen. Rotterdam has the first large water square in the world. In het dak van de ondergrondse parkeergarage is een waterberging aangebracht (2400 m3), die bij hevige neerslag als overloop dient voor Kruispleingarage (E5) de Westersingel. Een extra grote 5 parkeerplaats voor water dus! Verder biedt de Kruispleingarage plaats aan 760 auto’s. De afslag in de Weenatunnel geeft toegang tot een 200 meter lange ondergrondse straat met ondergrondse rotonde. Deze weg geeft ook toegang tot de bestaande Schouwburgpleingarage. Climate changes, climate adaptation or short intense showers: Rotterdam anticipates it all. A water-collecting facility capable of collecting 2,400 m³ of water has been created in the roof of the underground car park. Daarnaast zijn mooie bakken aangelegd met hergebruikt bestratingsSpoortuin (D5) materiaal die plek bieden voor 2 de buurt om eigen groenten of bloemen te verbouwen of een kindertuintje te maken. The Spoortuin (literally ‘railway garden’) is a neighbourhood initiative and is intended for anyone who happens to be in the neighbourhood. A real forest path with unusual plants and animals can be found between the railway and the boulevard. Deze singel, gegraven door architect Rose in 1842, was bedoeld om het vervuilde water in de stad te verversen met Maaswater. Nu is het een prachtige promenade met een beeldenterras en heeft de singel bij hevige regenval een functie Westersingel (E5) als wateropslag. Daartoe is de 6 Westersingel speciaal aangepast en vormt het bewijs dat wateropslag en stedelijke verblijfskwaliteit prima samen gaan. The purpose of the Westersingel, dug out by architect Rose in 1842, was to freshen the city’s wastewater with water from the Meuse. Now it is a wonderful promenade with a terrace full of sculptures, serving as a water-storage depot during heavy rainfall. To create this new functionality, special alterations had to be made. Op het dak van het Groothandelsgebouw lag al een eenvoudig groen dak. Met hulp het Rotterdam Climate Initiative is het dakterras van vergroend zodat bezoekers kunnen zien wat er op een dak mogelijk is. Groene daken zijn een verrijking Dakterras café Engels (E5) voor de stad en bovendien zijn 3 ze goed voor de luchtkwaliteit en binden ze het CO2. Het groene dak van Engels biedt ook een prachtig uitzicht over de stad. The Groothandelsgebouw (‘wholesale building’) did already have a simple green roof. The moveable section of the Erasmus bridge takes the form of a single bascule bridge, the largest and heaviest in Western Europe. A bascule bridge is a bridge that can open and close by rotating around its pivot point, where the bridge balances (approximately) between the weight of the bridge deck and that of the counterweight. A ‘tail’ is attached to the bridge deck, a metal arm with the ballast connected to it, which serves as counterweight. Generally, this ballast rotates inside the bascule basement, a large space below the bridge’s pivot point. When open, the bridge reaches a height of 63 metres. Het complex bestaat uit twee waterreservoirs, een zuiveringseenheid, een hogedrukpompstation en een dienstgebouw. Quist koos voor een herkenbare, pregnante Drinkwaterproductiebedrijf (J7) vorm. De twee grote reinwater 11 reservoirs zijn vormgegeven als gigantische waterdruppels met een zilveren glans. Op het voorterrein voor het laboratorium bevindt zich een plastiek van André Volten. Quist opted for a recognisable, clear-cut shape. The two large clear water reservoirs are shaped like gigantic drops of water with a silver sheen. The sewage treatment plant Dokhaven is right in the middle of Rotterdam and is the only underground sewage treatment plant in the Netherlands. While visitors to the Dokhaven park sit on a bench enjoying the sunshine, below their feet the sewage treatment plant processes more than 5,500 m³ of Rotterdam’s wastewater every hour. Het uit de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw stammende monumentale HAKA-pand is grondig verbouwd en met behulp van rest- en sloopmateriaal opnieuw ingericht. Materialen zijn onder andere afkomstig van slooppanden en landHAKA-gebouw (B7) bouwkassen en verwerkt tot 6 meubels, scheidingswanden, podia en een auditorium. Zo bestaan de wanden van de vergaderkamer uit een houten frame van hele deuren. Het gebouw en haar inrichting is daarmee een voorbeeld voor recycling. The HAKA-gebouw, a monument dating from the nineteen-thirties, has been thoroughly renovated and refurbished using items left over after demolition works. Materials were taken from demolished buildings and agricultural greenhouses and have been converted into furniture, partition walls, platforms and an auditorium. For example, the walls of the meeting room are a wooden frame made of doors. In fact, the building and its interior are a form of recycling. These days, RDM 8 stands for Research, Design and Manufacturing. The Drijvend Bouwen (constructing floating buildings) Community of Practice is active on the RDM grounds, for example. In September 2014, Aqua Dock, the testing site for floating buildings, will be opened in part of the harbour. This is where innovations involving water will be tested, demonstrated and improved on a life-size scale. Another testing site, called Concept House Village, can be found near the RDM grounds, in the village of Heijplaat. Bij de herinrichting in het gebied is de waterkering met overtollige grond verbreed en wordt aan beide zijden van de waterkering bebouwing Hilledijk (H8) gerealiseerd. Taluds komen 10 niet meer voor, de gehele buitenruimte bestaat uit vlakke treden, die gebruikt kunnen worden. Op deze manier is een multifunctionele, getrapte waterkering gemaakt, die zowel de mogelijkheden voor stedelijke functies als veiligheid tegen overstroming garandeert. The Hilledijk is the primary flood defence protecting the Rotterdam-Zuid district from high river water levels. When this region was being redeveloped, excess ground was used to broaden the barrier, and buildings have been constructed on both sides of the flood defence. Inclines are a thing of the past, the entire outside area is comprised of level steps that are fit for use. This has created a multifunctional, stepped flood defence that guarantees not only opportunities for urban functionalities but also security against flooding.

'EXPERIENCING THE FLOW OF THE CITY DISCOVER ROTTERDAM'S METABOLISM' During the 6th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) entitled Urban by Nature, Rotterdam will be presenting itself at the exhibition of Rotterdam's IABR Project Atelier through Urban Metabolism. Urban Metabolism examines how several of the city's material flows, e.g. food, water and waste products, find their way through the city and puts them in the spotlight. Knowledge about these flows is translated into new strategies for a sustainable and healthy Rotterdam. The 'Experiencing the flow of the city - Discover Rotterdam's metabolism' project leads you to familiar and less familiar locations in the city portraying how Rotterdam deals with food, water and waste products (see map). From cultivating mushrooms to water collection in a car park!

‘STROMEN DOOR DE STAD DE STOFWISSELING VAN ROTTERDAM’ Tijdens de 6e Internationale Architectuur Biennale (IABR) met de titel ‘Urban by Nature’ presenteert Rotterdam zich op de tentoonstelling van het IABR–Projectatelier Rotterdam met ‘Urban Metabolism’. ‘Urban Metabolism’ onderzoekt hoe stofstromen zoals voedsel, water en afval in de stad verlopen en brengt deze in beeld. De kennis over deze stromen wordt vertaald naar nieuwe strategieën voor een duurzaam en gezond Rotterdam. ‘Stromen door de stad-ontdek de stofwisseling van Rotterdam’ toont op de kaart bekende en minder bekende te bezichtigen plekken in de stad, die laten zien hoe Rotterdam omgaat met voedsel, water of afval.
