Vibrant garden to enjoy! The Dawncoffee garden is a city garden in the very heart of Hasselt (Belgium). First and foremost, the garden had to be ecological. The design offers a water retention zone that now helps to keep the neighbourhood safe from flooding during heavy rainfall. Special attention has been paid to the vegetation plan. A combination of edible species and naturally occurring species ensures a high level of diversity in the garden. It has become an edible garden full of berries, nuts and edible perennials. Specific attention was paid to a wide-ranging berry selection. Now the owner can pick berries while sitting on his terrace during his breakfast.

Many studies are looking for a good management strategy in order to preserve and extend drift sands. However, these are usually expensive and time-consuming. In addition, there is an increasing demand for new dwelling units in this area. This design presents a possible solution to these two problems. The proposed urban settlement near the Doesburger Enk can become a unique solution. It will create a new form of living which on the one hand offers a unique experience and on the other hand increases the quality of nature. It is known that infrastructure can accelerate wind. ‘The construction of a building inevitably changes the micro-climate in its vicinity. In particular near high-rise buildings, high wind velocities are often introduced at pedestrian level that can be experienced as uncomfortable or even dangerous’ (Blocken & Carmeliet, 2004). This designs focusses on the ability of infrastructure and buildings to steer and accelerate wind to create more surface of drift sands with a lower maintenance rate, and therefore completely change the ecosystem to a drift sand landscape. This way a city can be build which is also a machine to concentrate wind and steer it into the right direction These structures can be used as homes but also as locations for vertical farming. This should reduce the pressure on agricultural land.

Around the enks, existing farms will be transformed into gastro hotspots. These are hotspots where all kinds activities will take place which mainly revolve around gastronomic local food. The aim is to provide food for the surrounding residents and visitors using only local products. This will be made possible through all the new landscape interventions.

‘Sustainable ArenAPoort on the rise’ aims to inspire the municipality of Amsterdam and other planners and designers by this bold design to make the ArenAPoort West energy neutral and thermally comfortable. The design is based on several tools that are developed based on a site-specific problems/ potentials analysis. The final design uses tools, together with the implementation of new buildings, to make ArenAPoort West ready for future residents. The design adheres to the structured and straight-line existing urban fabric, as well as providing a refreshing and interesting cityscape. The main problems and potentials are the need for shading and wind flow during summer, whilst providing access to sun rays and blocking wind in the winter. Moreover, water storage is needed to prevent flooding and future residents need to be able to avoid large crowds.

New life for an old fire escape 2019 Puyenbroeck, West-Flanders (Belgium) Patrimonium East-Flanders Internship

During my internship, I learned to make connections. In one project area a building was being demolished, in another project area there was a desire to build a lookout tower. However, there was little budget for such a project. In my design I transform the fire escape into a lookout tower. I created visualisations to convince the stakeholders, and co-supervised the project. Meanwhile, the observation tower has been constructed. 21

Damme

Due to a growing shortage of cemeteries, there are plans to convert a meadow near Damme into a cemetery. However, this design allows for a combination of park and cemetery. The design is dynamic but at the same time serene. A combination of forest, meadows, water and reed beds provide diversity. Sight lines through the park offer views on chapels and churches nearby. The design encourages nature burials, nature lovers, children at play and wildlife.

The planting is a combination of native species and some species that have a symbolic meaning. This planting plan is accompanied by a management plan. This is essential to the success of the design. Among other things, a sine-mowing management will be applied. Extensive layering and space for time have been incorporated. This is one of my first park designs. 27

To practice AutoCAD techniques, I was assigned to redesign the pavement of a shopping street. I tried to create a light-hearted motif that subtly separates passing traffic and shoppers. Playful planters with seating infrastructure provide rest areas in this public environment. If I were to be given this assignment again with all the knowledge I have gained in the meantime, I would like to provide a water infiltration zone that collects water but also provides extra biodiversity. 29

Elasa is the European Landscape Architecture Student Association. It promotes the support, cooperation, exchange of ideas and understanding between landscape architecture students throughout Europe. Every meeting is organised in a different country by landscape architecture students of an university from that country. Together with five other students, I organized the meeting ‘Borderscapes’ in Belgium in 2018. This experience made me want to study an international master’s programme. I find it important to build an international network during my studies, in order to gain a broader insight into the profession.
