CITY OF HOLLYWOOD, Florida Earns Perfect LGBTQ+ Municipal Equality Index Score for Third Straight Year

For the third year in a row, the City of Hollywood earned a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s 2023 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). The MEI examines how inclusive municipal laws, polices and services are of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+ people (LGBTQ+) who live and work there.

Hollywood joins 129 other cities across the U.S. that earned a perfect score. “Since its founding by Joseph Young in 1925, Hollywood has established itself as a welcoming and diverse City for everyone,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy. “I take great pleasure in knowing a much wider audience is learning how Hollywood is a place for equity, diversity and inclusion.”

The HRC scored the City on LGBTQ+ focused activities in five categories – non-discrimination laws, municipality as employer, municipal services, law enforcement, and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. Examples of City initiatives that contributed to the perfect MEI score include:

• Under Part II, Municipality as an Employer, the City has received the full 6 points for Transgender-Inclusive Healthcare Benefits in 2021 and 2022.

• Supported the annual Hollywood LBGTQ Council’s Pride Street Festival in downtown Hollywood which includes an opening ceremony, Flag Raising and Pride Brunch.

• Issued a Proclamation in Recognition of Pride Month and held a Progress Pride flag raising ceremony at City Hall.

• Provided funding for organizations that serve LGBTQ+ youth and young adults.

• Shared information on Lesbian Visibility Day, and National Transgender HIV Testing Day and posted on the City’s main social media accounts.

• Launched a LGBTQ+ Ally Program for City employees, where participants viewed the documentary “Open Dialogues: Stories from the LGBTQ Community” provided by the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, “Become an Ally – LGBTQIA+” video presentation, and attend LGBTQ 101 Proficiency and Workplace Bias Training.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), under the baton of Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, continues to build upon its legacy as the region’s largest professional orchestra, providing residents and visitors with world-class classical music concerts, plus community and education outreach offerings in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Key West.

For its 2024/25 Masterworks season dubbed Icons & Rebels, running November 2024 through April 2025, SFSO pays homage to the rebellious masters who broke barriers and forever changed the classical music landscape. Among the works scheduled during its 27th season are the SFSO premiere of Bernstein’s satirical operetta Candide, a centennial celebration of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Mozart’s Requiem, Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges Suite, R. Strauss’ Four Last Songs and Don Juan, plus much more.

In addition, SFSO provides community members with its intimate chamber music series, ‘Summer with the Symphony’, during the months of May, June, and July, giving guests a chance to get up close and personal with the musicians.

Alongside Maestra Alfonso, Jacqueline Lorber, who serves as President and CEO and is married to Alfonso, SFSO has substantially grown its signature Symphony in the Schools out reach programs and is on pace to serve approximately 30,000 youth annually through a myriad of programs including a recent partnership with Junior Achievement that reaches every Broward

Gavin Tudor Elliot, a seasoned attorney with roots in South Florida since 1980, is a Cardinal Gibbons High School alum. Elliot furthered his education at the University of Florida and the University of Miami School of Law. In 2010, Elliot founded The Elliot Legal Group PA; a boutique law firm focused on business litigation and transactions. Elliot uses his more than twenty (20) years of business law and real estate experience, in and out of the courtroom and across the globe, to ensure that his clients are positioned for success.

Elliot has always been fascinated by the written word, meticulously crafting business contracts to protect his clients’ rights. “I have always had a strong grasp of the English language and its interpretation.” Elliot says. “Whether a legal brief or poetry, I love the use and manipulation of the English language.”

Elliot has negotiated and drafted agreements for the acquisition of financial institutions and software developers in Europe and distributor relationships between Asia and the Middle East, assisted in the formation of online boutiques in the United States, and contributed to his clients’ success by negotiating and drafting contracts, corporate formative and operational documents, and policies and procedures.

“I’ve seen how much harm can be done when someone’s rights weren’t protected – when the wrong words were used or the right words weren’t,” Elliot says.

Contracts are king in both business law and real estate –and Elliot is no stranger to contracts. His services also include updating contracts as a business expands and defining the relationships between a company and its vendors, lenders, employees, officers and shareholders. He can anticipate potential problems that can be addressed in a contract to prevent issues down the line.

Elliot’s passion for the written word is only matched by his love of the courtroom. And this love has resulted in numerous awards and accolades, including recognition as a Martindale•Hubbell A-V rated preeminent attorney for the last four years. “I love it when a plan comes together. When the hours of analysis, preparation, and strategy development come together in a win for my client.”

For Elliot, it is all about the clients. “At the end of the day, I love finding solutions, improving my clients’ lives, and helping them grow and succeed. That’s the true reward of being a lawyer,” Elliot reflects.

Business Connect Info 2024

What is the Business Connect Program?

The GFLGLCC’s Business Connect Program is basically a “matchmaking” service for your company.

How does it work?

The new Business Connect program takes a direct “hands-on” approach to providing value to our corporate level members and partners.

Eligible members interested in participating in the program will first personally meet with the President / CEO of the Chamber or one of its Board Members to identify their business goals and objectives, their ideal client type and their industry focus. That, along with other key drivers will then be analyzed in the context of the GFLGLCC member base to determine the strategic relationships that make the most business sense. From there, personal introductions are made between members.

OK! But how does it really work?

To demonstrate exactly how the program works, consider this fictional example:

An eligible member who provides a line of allnatural, organic toiletries is interested in expanding their business. During the initial planning meeting, it is decided that the best opportunities to grow their business through the Chamber are via hotels and resorts.

With 40+ hotel and resort chamber members, the focus shifts toward identifying those that could mutually benefit from an introduction. It is concluded that an email will be sent to all 40+ hotel and resort members from the Chamber on behalf of the member, followed up with phone calls to a short list of 10 that have the most promise.

How do we arrive at this short list?

By considering things like the ability of local management to make purchasing decisions for in-room amenities or gift shop inventories, any “intelligence” related to change that’s happening or anticipated that could result in a requirement for new product options, etc.

Once the 10 have been identified, the goal is to ultimately facilitate an in-person or virtual introduction with as many of them as possible. This might occur at one of the monthly mixers, at a quarterly breakfast or

luncheon, at some other local event or at a brief meeting (in person or virtually) scheduled specifically for the purpose of a meet and greet.

The example doesn’t end there. Through the analysis, let’s say that there are also two hotel management and consulting company members identified. By facilitating an introduction to those two members, additional opportunities may open up via their networks!

As is demonstrated by the specificity of that fictional example, all program details will be custom tailored to each individual member that goes through the program. Great care will be taken to make meaningful introductions that have the potential to benefit both sides. For this reason, the specific number of introductions and approach to facilitating the connections will vary from member to member.

Why Was I Selected for the Pilot Program?

First and foremost, your company qualified because you are a Premier level member and above. Secondly, based on our understanding of your business as well as the demographic and needs of our membership base at large (including our Corporate Partners), we believe there is a potential opportunity for all parties involved that warrants more discussion.

How Much Does it Cost?

NOTHING! The Business Connect Program is just one more of the value-added benefits that are being offered as part of your membership fee. However, given the specific, custom and hands-on approach required to make the program a success, we do ask that you invest the appropriate time in the process for discussions, introductions, follow-ups, etc.

MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM: A Partner for the Community, for Long-Term Wellbeing

Since beginning as a 100-bed hospital in 1953, Memorial Healthcare System has transformed into a leading regional medical provider whose workforce and cultural values reflect the diversity of the community they serve.

A public hospital system, Memorial provides a wide range of healthcare services, offering care in neuroscience, cardiac and vascular, heart and kidney transplant, rehabilitation, cancer and pediatrics. The system includes six acute-care hospitals, three NICUs and a Level 1 trauma center. Its nursing home, Memorial Manor, has been ranked by US News & World Reports as one of the best in the country.

With specialty centers, multispecialty locations, 12 primary care centers, 3 urgent care centers, 24/7 telehealth services, and Community Services programs, Memorial makes access to care easy for patients and families. Strategic partnerships with organizations like Moffitt Cancer Center and Boston Children’s Hospital help Memorial deliver high quality specialized care to the South Florida community. Memorial strives to remove barriers to care and partner with patients and families over the long term – to manage chronic conditions, improve their health, and maintain lifetimes of wellness.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Memorial’s employees rose to the challenge on every level. Much of that dedication was thanks to Memorial’s investment in outstanding patient- and family-centered care and its Pillars of Excellence (safety, quality, service, people, financial success, growth and community). That Memorial’s culture is special is regularly demonstrated by its annual employee engagement survey – the fall 2022 survey placed Memorial in the 98th percentile nationally for employee satisfaction.

Memorial offers competitive pay, family-centric benefits, and many opportunities to advance. Modern Healthcare magazine has recognized Memorial as a Best Place to Work every year but one since 2009, and has named Memorial its #1 Family-Friendly Employer two years in a row.

LGBTBE CERTIFICATION?

From a patient to a “Patients’ Advocate”

I sought asylum and embarked on a journey to the United States of America in 2021, aspiring for a brighter future as an LGBTQ+ individual and activist. I came from a country where we go to jail for years for the simple fact of being ourselves. We had no legal protection and no health system to protect us.

My journey with HIV and PrEP began with AHF, where I was warmly welcomed and received comprehensive care for both my physical and mental well-being. Despite financial constraints at that time, AHF supported me wholeheartedly, offering assistance without any cost.

In 2022, I joined the AHF team and have since dedicated myself to assisting as many individuals as possible as a patient advocate at the new AHF location in Oakland Park, situated at 2866 East Oakland Park Boulevard, 2nd Floor, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306. Collaborating with a trio of highly skilled medical providers, including Dr. Itay Rabinovitz, Dr. Kimberley Holding, and Maureen Greenwood, ARPN, I am committed to making a positive impact in people’s lives.

At this new location, as in all other locations, our dedicated team members put in tremendous effort to deliver personalized and exceptional care based on individual needs. Our commitment extends to providing patients with the necessary medications conveniently within the same office through our pharmacy, led by Maksim Yermakov, Pharm.D., Cph, AAHIVP. Our highly qualified team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians diligently explore innovative solutions to ensure patients receive their medications at no cost. Additionally, they are well-trained in assisting patients with access to financial assistance plans that can further support their healthcare journey.

This daily journey at AHF is my source of inspiration, providing me with the energy to wake up every morning eager to face challenges and make a positive impact on as many lives as I encounter. It’s a fulfilling experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to bless others in my path.

LGBT + Visitor Center

OUR LGBT + VISITOR CENTER SERVES ALL OF GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE

The Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce operates the area’s first LGBT+ Visitor Center to showcase attractions of interest to LGBT+ visitors. Greater Fort Lauderdale has been popular with the LGBT+ community for decades, welcoming 1.5 million LGBT+ visitors who spend $1.5 billion annually. The Visitor Center is a result of a partnership between Visit Lauderdale and the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce. The center is located with the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce in the heart of Wilton Manors, Broward County’s LGBTcentric district with the destinations’ largest concentration of LGBT residents and businesses.

“We are proud to have a long and positive history of supporting the LGBT+ community. The opening of this Visitor Center in 2018 marked another important milestone in the uniqueness of our area in recognizing the value and needs of the LGBT+ visitor,” said Richard Gray, Senior Vice President Inclusion & Accessibility of Visit Lauderdale. “We are very excited about this latest advancement in calling attention to all of our great attractions, hotels, clubs, bars and restaurants that cater to this important audience.”

The Greater Fort Lauderdale area has hundreds of LGBT-owned and operated businesses and the highest concentration of same-sex couple households in the country and is noted as one of the most diverse and welcoming destinations in the world. The LGBT+ community has played a major role in the economic growth and development of the area and is a major tourism draw with its nightlife including some of the most popular LGBT+ bars in the country, such as Hunters Nightclub, and clothing and novelty stores, such as Pride Factory. Gay-owned businesses, such as Castelli Real Estate, have been drivers of real estate for many years and great ambassadors to draw new residents to Broward County. Many local businesses, such as Thasos restaurant, are active in providing support for LGBT+ causes in the community.

“The economic impact the LGBT+ community locally cannot be understated, especially by LGBT+ visitors that come here from all over the world year after year,” said Keith Blackburn, CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce. “While LGBT+ travelers

have many of the same needs as straight travelers, many unique needs exist. This Visitor Center serves as a place where people can stop in, ask for recommendations and receive information about the community, our member businesses, events and organizations.”

Greater Fort Lauderdale is also home to one of the largest Pride Centers in the country, the world’s first AIDS museum, the global headquarters of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, and the Stonewall Museum, one of the only permanent spaces in the U.S. devoted to exhibitions relating to LGBT+ history and culture.

Visit Lauderdale has been welcoming LGBT+ travelers since 1996 when it became the first Convention & Visitors Bureau with a dedicated LGBT+ marketing department. Since then, Greater Fort Lauderdale has continued to break down barriers and facilitate visibility for the LGBT+ community at large, acting as a pioneer in the hospitality industry and ensuring that the destination is inclusive and welcoming with a diverse, safe and open community for all travelers. For more information on LGBT+ travel in Greater Fort Lauderdale, visit www.sunny.org/lgbt.

Holy Cross Health: A Safe Zone For The LGBTQ+ Community

Holy Cross Health in Fort Lauderdale stands as a beacon of compassionate care, deeply impacting the local community through its unwavering commitment to holistic healthcare and community outreach. As a non-profit Catholic teaching hospital, it has been at the forefront of enhancing healthcare services, embracing new technologies, and ensuring that healthcare is accessible to everyone, including the underserved and uninsured.

The hospital’s “wholistic” approach to healthcare— encompassing the body, mind, and spirit—aligns with the community’s core values, fostering a deep connection. This philosophy extends beyond the hospital walls, with community outreach programs reaching into schools, shelters, community centers and participating in community events. Outreach programming is designed as a response to identified community needs and a concerted effort to improve

the health and well-being of our community. This is often accomplished by leveraging key local, state, and national partnerships and implementing proactive prevention strategies

Holy Cross Health’s role as a critical healthcare provider is underscored by its substantial inpatient care—over 70,000 days—and more than 600,000 outpatient visits, reflecting its pivotal position in the healthcare landscape of the region. The hospital’s

www.gogayfortlauderdale.com | 37

influence is magnified through its financial assistance initiatives and programs aimed at managing chronic diseases, health education, and disease prevention, all contributing to the collective well-being of Broward County

The hospital’s dedication to diversity and inclusion has been notably reinforced with the efforts made by the Community Health and Well-Being team, a primary care office located in Wilton Manors and policy updates. The appointment of Rudy Molinet as the first “OUT” Board Chairman is groundbreaking serving in a leadership role. This underscores Holy Cross Health’s progressive stance and commitment to an inclusive environment that welcomes all. Molinet’s appointment heralds a new era of representation in governance, which is vital for addressing the distinctive healthcare needs of the LGBTQ+ community. With specialized services designed to mitigate health disparities and provide inclusive care, Holy Cross Health stands as a model for other healthcare institutions.

Holy Cross Health has been proactive in championing the health of the LGBTQ+ community through a series of strategic initiatives. Recognizing the heightened risks of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections within the community— particularly among people of color—the hospital has taken steps to address these health disparities. Populations experiencing health disparities are especially impacted as these individuals tend to access healthcare less and late – sometimes too late for effective, long-term intervention.

Upholding its inclusive ethos, Holy Cross Health enforces LGBTQ+ and trans-inclusive healthcare practices, ensuring respectful and appropriate services for all patients. These concerted efforts underscore the hospital’s deep commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the goal of ensuring optimal health for every member of the community.

EXPERIENCE THE RARE & EXOTIC!

At Flamingo Gardens you can feed a flamingo, take a narrated Tram Tour through a tropical hardwood jungle, and encounter Everglades native wildlife!

Flamingo Gardens is a botanical garden of rare, unusual, or endangered tropical and sub-tropical plants, and a wildlife sanctuary home to permanently injured and non-releasable Florida native wildlife.

Founded in 1927 as a citrus grove by Floyd and Jane Wray, it’s one of the oldest botanical gardens in South Florida. Flamingo Gardens is part of the Long Key chain of islands, once surrounded by the Everglades. Its hardwood hammocks of ancient Live Oaks were once inhabited by the Tequesta people as far back as 1000 BC and are an important bird migratory route.

Most of the large trees and plants at Flamingo Gardens were planted in the 20s - 40s through a US. Department of Agriculture program that sent plants and seeds from around the world to see what could be grown in South Florida. Today, the 60-acre not-for-profit botanical garden boasts 15 Champion Trees certified as the largest trees of their species by the Florida Division of Forestry. It contains thousands of orchids and one of the largest heliconia collections in the continental United States.

Built in 1933, the historic Wray Home is the oldest residence in Broward County west of University Drive and is now a museum reflecting South Florida life in the 1930s.

The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the largest collection of Florida native wildlife in the state including alligators, black bear, bobcats, eagles, hawks, otters, owls, panther, peacocks, and of course flamingos. Be sure to visit the new native Butterfly Conservatory!

Please visit www.FlamingoGardens.org or call 954-473-255 for more information. Flamingo Gardens is located at 3750 South Flamingo Road in Davie, FL 33330.
