World AIDS Museum & Educational Center:

Florida was one of the worst affected parts of the U.S. during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic (alongside New York and San Francisco). The World AIDS Museum was set up to shed light on the history and impact of a disease that took the lives of over 700,000 people in the U.S.

It’s difficult for younger generations to imagine how bad the stigma around HIV/AIDS was back when it first appeared. In a world with PrEP and an increase in representation of HIV positive individuals living long and healthy lives, it’s unfathomable to imagine a time when the general public didn’t know or care about the condition. Heck, the U.S. President at the time, Ronald Regan, famously took YEARS before even acknowledging the epidemic.

Many years ago, the City of Hollywood was dubbed a “City of the Future” because its diversity most resembled what experts predicted all of America would look like in 2025. Hollywood was proud of this distinction back then, and as we approach 2025, the City celebrates its rich diversity and reputation as a welcoming community where people of all backgrounds and beliefs feel comfortable.

Hollywood has emerged as a municipal leader for LGBTQ+ equality. Each year, the City partners with the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council on the “My Hollywood Pride” event that includes a Progress Pride Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall. Hollywood was the first in the state to fly the Progress Pride flag and display a Pride Youth Tapestry created by local youth on the theme of what Pride means to them.

Again this year, the City earned a perfect score of 100 points on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI). The MEI evaluates how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ+ residents and employees. The ratings are based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement, and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality.

Hollywood is a great place to live, work, and play, offering easy access to the best of South Florida, while preserving its unique hometown charm. With more than six miles of blue wave beaches, a historic oceanfront Broadwalk, and an eclectic downtown with one- of-a-kind restaurants, entertainment, shops and art galleries, Hollywood truly has something for everyone. Hollywood and its Community Redevelopment Agency recognize that small businesses are the foundation for strong communities. As such, we are prou d to partner with the GFLGLCC to promote the success and growth of business enterprises that share the values of inclusivity and equality of opportunity for all.

Hollywood was founded in 1925 by a visionary leader who wanted to create a dream city by the sea for everyone. The future is bright in Hollywood as it strives to be that dream destination for visitors, residents, and business owners who support efforts to end prejudice, respect the rights of all people, and celebrate the diversity and richness that is Hollywood, Florida.

Sincerely,

With lots of choices for places to eat, we wanted to give you some of our personal recommendations.

Dear Friends,

On behalf of my fellow members of the Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the citizens of our great city, I am pleased to welcome you to the shores of greater Fort Lauderdale!

In this region of South Florida, you’ll find one of the highest concentrations of samesex households in the country, and we welcome in an average of over 1.3 million LGBTQ+ visitors each year.

We also pride ourselves as an intersection to the world where 120 different languages are spoken, and African American, Caribbean, Afro-Latino, Native American, Central American, and South American-influenced culture and diversity abound.

In Fort Lauderdale, you can be who you are without fear of reproach. The city boasts a stalwart human rights ordinance that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in areas of employment, housing, and public accommodations. This critical legal protection is now stronger than the countywide human rights ordinance. Fort Lauderdale also continues to receive back-to-back perfect scores on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index that rates cities’ performance on key LGBTQ+ issues.

Fort Lauderdale is also firmly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Along with the many LGBTQ+-owned businesses that you will find in this guide, greater Fort Lauderdale is the proud home to the Sunshine Cathedral, “the world’s largest progressive queer church.” We’re also honored to have the Stonewall National Museum and Archives, which is the largest LGBTQ+ circulating library in the United States, and the World AIDS Museum, the only museum dedicated to telling the story of the disease and those affected by it.

I hope you have an enjoyable and memorable time with us in greater Fort Lauderdale. Welcome home!

Yours,

Mayor

We celebrate diversity and inclusivity, creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels right at home. Whether you’re here to relax by the beach, explore the vibrant culture, or enjoy the stunning views of the Atlantic, we invite you to make memories that will last a lifetime.

LGBTQ-Specific Events

Join us every year for the Stonewall Pride’s exclusive kick-off extravaganza featuring celebrity entertainers, show stopping musical performances and over the top theatrical and interactive artistic experiences. The street festival is an 8-hour spectacle featuring 3 stages of live music, dazzling performances and DJs, with vendors and organizations of all kinds offering special pride deals and free giveaways. The legendary Stonewall Pride Parade is the main event, a colorful spectacle not to be missed. Also, not to be missed is the Floatarama. So come out; celebrate love, acceptance, equality and inclusivity. Just as celebratory is the yearly FlockFest, being held

at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park this year instead of Sebastian Beach to allow for more parking, full bathrooms and more space. This event invokes, promotes, and celebrates LGBT+ culture. FlockFest is an invitation to grab your best sunglasses and bring your decorated winged floatie for a day of sun and fun on one of Greater Fort Lauderdale’s most beautiful gold sand beaches.

When the sun sets, Greater Fort Lauderdale’s OUTshine Film Festival in Fort Lauderdale maintains the region’s commitment to LGBT+ issues. World premiere film screenings make the festival a can’t-miss and annual presentations include filmmaker discussions and actor talkbacks that encourage a sense of community and provide a lens on the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experience. Be sure to plan your visit around an opportunity to view the best in contemporary cinema.

As the nation’s most diverse and welcoming region, Greater Fort Lauderdale excels in presenting programming that welcomes the LGBT+ community. Cultural attractions and an abundance of LGBT+ operated businesses and hotels ensure you have a wealth of event choices, from nightly karaoke and drag show events to food and music festivals. These are just a few of the many events we’ll have in 2025.

All Welcoming 2025 Events:

On April 4-6, 2025, Tortuga Music Festival puts on a three-day concert in the sand at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park to raise money for ocean conservation and research by bringing big-name acts like Tim McGraw and Luke Bryan. Greater Fort Lauderdale also knows how to turn up the dial and throw memory-making holiday events, like the 4th of July Spectacular on Fort Lauderdale beach and Las Olas Oceanside Park (complete with bands, a kids zone, and a 23-minute firework show). Perhaps the most anticipated event of the year is a Christmas favorite, the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade, on December 14th,,2025,dubbed the “Best Show on H2O.” More than a million viewers tune in to watch decorated boats of all sizes, from mega-yachts to barges and paddle boards, parade along the 12-mile route. Catch the spectacle in person if you can.

In early January, the week-long Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival places the county’s top and emerg-

ing chefs and restaurateurs on prime display through poolside BBQs, bar competitions, and grand tastings at the beach. And if you’re visiting in the spring, downtown Fort Lauderdale turns into a four-block street fair helmed by the city’s best chefs and restaurants during the Las Olas Wine & Food Festival. In addition to eating your way around town, you can also sample a selection of more than 100 wines from international wineries while dancing to live music and DJs.

In summer, post up on the sand in Oakland Park for free, family-friendly concerts and food trucks, or enjoy weekend live music along the Broadwalk in Hollywood, where movie night takes place on Fridays at ArtsPark at Young Circle. Friday Night Sound Waves brings free music, a makers market, and food vendors to Fort Lauderdale Beach every Friday, while the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood attracts some of the hottest events in town year-round, including bigname acts like standup comedian Amy Schumer, Alicia Keys, Green Day, and Bruce Springsteen.

Sports are just as much a fabric of Greater Fort Lauderdale as the beaches. Watch Lionel Messi and Inter Miami play all their home matches at Chase Stadium here in Fort Lauderdale. Snag front-row seats to both Division 1 college teams as well as the pros like the Florida Panthers ice hockey team, from October through April at the Amerant Bank Arena, which doubles as a concert venue for some of the biggest shows in South Florida.
