WELCOME TO THE 5TH EDITION OF GFNY COZUMEL

Lo que comenzó como una divertida idea de organizar un evento ciclista en la exótica isla de Cozumel, ha crecido durante los últimos 5 años hasta convertirse en el más icónico evento de ciclismo del año.

What started out as a fun idea to host a cycling event on the exotic island of Cozumel, Mexico has over the past five years grown to the most iconic cycling event of the year.

We want to thank each of you for your GFNY Cycling passion. This 5th annual, international GFNY Cozumel will have over 3,000 riders from 50 countries.

Queremos agradecer a cada uno de ustedes por su pasión hacia el ciclismo de GFNY. Esta 5ª edición del anual e internacional GFNY Cozumel, tendrá más de 3,000 corredores, de 50 países.

GFNY Cozumel is all about a perfect end of season race where you can celebrate your day with friends and family and close your racing season with a fast finish. For some of you, Cozumel will be your third GFNY race of the year, where you will receive your 3x2018 finisher medal at the finish line. There are also many of you who have been to each GFNY Cozumel race since we started five years ago. Thank you for joining us!

Great advice on how to get a podium win or better your finish time.

Modera tu ingestión de líquidos la mañana de carrera

Si bebes mucho, tendrás que orinar mucho. También mantén tu ingesta de café al mínimo por la mañana, pues ya te estarás sintiendo un poco nervioso y el café hará que orines aún más.

Prepárate para un comienzo rápido Los primeros 20 minutos son siempre rápidos, así que ese es el momento de correr para posicionarte y encontrar el mejor grupo para mantenerte. Tu ritmo cardiaco se incrementará rápidamente, pero mantente fuerte, no durará mucho.

Establece tu rimo de carrera

Esto es usualmente un 7 en la escala de 1-10. Monitorea tu ritmo cardiaco y asegúrate de no entrar en la zona roja.

Los últimos 10-20 kilómetros entra en modo contrarreloj y deja todo atrás en el camino. Debes finalizar habiendo dado el 100%.

Asegúrate de hidratarte y comer

Una importante razón por la cual muchos corredores se cansan o pierden energía, es simplemente porque no comen o se hidratan lo suficiente. Asegúrate de beber cada 15 minutos y comer un bocadillo o gel cada 45 minutos.

La velocidad aumentará en la sección KOW

El ganador del KOW en los años pasados no estaba en el grupo líder, pero aún así tuvo el mejor tiempo. Espera velocidades más rápidas en esta sección y prepárate para ellas. El inicio es usualmente rápido, hasta que todos establecen su ritmo.

Escóndete del viento Un gran secreto para los corredores de GFNY Cozumel es mantenerse todo el camino a la derecha en ciertas partes de la sección KOW. El viento va hasta tu cabeza si te quedas en las bajadas. Verás más árboles en esas áreas en el lado derecho del camino.

MODERATE YOUR FLUID INTAKE ON RACE MORNING.

If you drink a lot, you will also have to pee a lot. Also keep your coffee intake minimal in the morning; you will already feel a bit jittery from the adrenaline and nerves. Coffee will also make you pee even more.

GET READY FOR A FAST START

The first 20 min is always fast so that’s the moment to race for position and find the perfect group to keep with. Your heart rate will increase rapidly but stay strong it won’t last too long.

SET YOUR RACE PACE

This is usually a 7 on a scale of 1-10. Monitor your heart rate and make sure not to go into the red zone. The last 10-20 km get into time trial mode and leave everything on the road behind you. You want to finish knowing you gave it 100%.

WORK AS A TEAM

GFNY cycling is a team sport. See who will work together with you and share the effort all the way to the finish line. Devise a plan together of how long each of you will pull at the front.

MAKE SURE TO HYDRATE AND EAT

A big reason why many racers get tired or lose energy is simply because they don’t eat or hydrate enough. Make sure to drink every 15 min and to have a gel or snack every 45 min.

SPEED WILL PICK UP AT THE KOW SECTION

Last years winner of the KOW wasn’t in the lead group but still had a better time. Expect faster speeds at this section and be prepared for it. The beginning is usually faster until everyone settles into a rhythm.

SEE WHO’S SHOWING SIGNS OF WEAKNESS

Check to see who looks tired or who as attacked too many times. That will be your time to make a break and gain a lead. Check the rear bib numbers to make sure they’re in your category.

HIDE FROM THE WIND

A big secret for GFNY Cozumel racers is to stay all the way to the right of the road at certain parts of the KOW section. The wind actually goes over your head if you stay in the drops. You’ll see more tree’s in those areas on the right side of the road.

AID STATION TIME LIMIT

Give yourself a maximum time limit to be at the aid stations.

This is where many people lose time.

Convierte al calor en tu amigo MAKE THE HEAT YOUR FRIEND Rodar en un clima caliente y húmedo como el de Cozumel, puede ser difícil para el cuerpo, especialmente si no estás acostumbrado a ello. Para aquellos que vienen de climas más frescos, su cuerpo necesita aclimatarse. Tu cuerpo no solamente estará bajo estrés por el ritmo rápido de la carrera, sino que a eso une el clima de Cozumel y necesitarás monitorearte cuidadosamente para no sentir los efectos de la madre naturaleza. Sigue nuestros tips de aquí abajo para saber cómo manejar el calor mientras corres, y te prometemos que nos agradecerás después:

Riding in a hot and humid climate like Cozumel can be hard on the body especially if you’re not used to it. For those of you who come from cooler climates your body will need to acclimate to the heat and humidity. Your body will not only be under stress from the fast pace of racing but add in the Cozumel climate and you need to monitor yourself carefully in order not to feel the effects of mother nature. Follow our tips below on how to handle the heat while racing and we promise you’ll thank us later.

Hidrátate, hidrátate e hidrátate: sabemos que esto es lo obvio para decir, pero mucha gente no lo hace. Nuestro consejo es que pongas una alarma de cada 15-20 minutos en la computadora de tu bici, para que te recuerde hidratarte.

Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate: We know this is the obvious thing to say but many people just don’t do it. Our advice is to set an alarm timer for every 15-20 on your bike computer reminding you to drink.

SaltSticks or electrolyte drinks: You’re going to sweat a lot which is ok as long as your replacing your liquids like we mentioned above, but water alone won’t help. Five electrolytes in particular play a pivotal role in maintaining normal human muscle function: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. A shortage of any of these electrolytes will affect athletic performance. By drinking an electrolyte drink you will help your body keep the vital minerals it needs to get you to the finish line.

SaltSticks o bebidas con electrolitos: vas a sudar mucho, lo cual está bien, siempre que reemplaces tus líquidos, como mencionamos arriba, pero el agua sola no va a ayudar. Cinco electrolitos en particular, juegan un papel nodal en mantener normales las funciones musculares: sodio, potasio, magnesio, calcio y cloruro. La escasez de cualquiera de esos electrolitos afectará tu desempeño atlético.

Use sunscreen: By using sunscreen you’re not only protecting your body from the sun’s rays but also regulating your body temperature. Sun screen has been proven to help keep your body cooler in the heat which is a big necessity if your racing in the sun from 4-6 hours.

Utiliza bloqueador de sol: utilizando bloqueador de sol no sólo protegerás tu cuerpo de los rayos del sol, sino que también regularás tu temperatura corporal. Make ice your best friend: Bottom line is you need to keep your core temperature as cool as possible and ice really helps to do that. Some of the tricks we use are freezing one water bottle the night before, drinking an icy drink 15 minutes before the race starts, putting ice inside the back of your jersey or even inside your bib shorts. Of-course the most refreshing is just pouring cold ice water over your head every chance you get.

Find the shady part of the race course: The great thing about the GFNY Cozumel race course is that there are many areas where you can hide away from the sun. The shade is usually 10 degrees cooler than by racing in the sun so try to stay there as long as you can without sacrificing your speed and time.

Encuentra la parte sombreada del camino: lo genial del camino de GFNY Cozumel es que hay muchas áreas donde te puedes ocultar del sol. La sombra está usualmente 10 grados más fresca que rodar bajo el sol, así que intenta mantenerte ahí lo más que puedas, sin sacrificar velocidad ni tiempo.

El ciclismo es uno de los deportes en los que más se puede llegar a sufrir físicamente, principalmente cuando la idea de rodar implica subir el nivel y alcanzar objetivos claros. El GFNY Cozumel es un gran evento porque abraza a una amplia gama de ciclistas, los que enfrentan por primera vez un reto, ya sea de 80 km, o el Gran Fondo completo, que son los 160 kilómetros.

En esta enorme gama de ciclistas, el denominador común será saber manejar con la mente lo que queremos que las piernas hagan. De esta forma quienes hacen su primera competencia, tendrán que saber manejar el estrés del arranque, la enclipada, el rodar con mucha gente alrededor, aguantar la distancia y el sillín, tomar agua y cruzar la meta para sentir la enorme satisfacción del objetivo alcanzado.

Cycling is one of those sports where in order to achieve great results you need to understand how to deal with great physical pain. For those who train for races or mass participation events you need to have a clear training plan which will get you into peak physical condition for the main event. GFNY Cozumel is a great event because it embraces a wide range of cyclists, who have all trained for this great challenge.

No matter what your physical ability everyone will have to handle how your mind pushes your legs and body to the finish line. For riders who GFNY Cozumel is there first race your stress might be how to handle the start of the race, be next to so many riders, or to complete the distance while staying hydrated and comfortable. For riders with more race experience you won’t need to worry about those issues but will have a whole new list of issues to think about to get you to the finish line. Things such as proper positioning, keeping the rhythm and suffering with everyone in your group will be the main challenges. In either case the mind will be your real engine of the day. The body does what the mind tells it to do. Just like when you were training, your tolerance to be uncomfortable in exchange for better performance turns into great satisfaction for all cyclists. The riders who usually win a race or a stage are the one’s who have the greatest capacity to endure pain, to take the body to the limit; When the legs burn, the pulse accelerates but the soul fills with life and the mind drives us to places we never thought we could reach.

You can take ease in knowing that every cyclist that will be around you on race Sunday, will be experiencing more or less the same type of mental suffering. Those riding faster will be suffering; as well as the slower riders, but each and every one of you will get the great satisfaction of having raced GFNY Cozumel and crossing the finish line.

Los de mayor nivel han pasado ya por esos retos, la enclipada se hace casi de manera inconsciente, se puede rodar hombro con hombro y el reto viene en saberse colocar, aguantar el ritmo del grupo, saber sufrir y gozar haciéndolo.

En ambos casos la mente es el motor para el día. El cuerpo hace lo que la mente le indica. Esto también se va entrenando, la tolerancia a ir incómodo a cambio de un mejor rendimiento en nosotros los ciclistas, se convierte en placer. Ya sé, no tiene sentido pero no me lo puedes negar.

Quien gana por lo general una carrera o una etapa, es quien tiene la mayor capacidad de soportar el dolor, de llevar el cuerpo al límite; cuando las piernas queman, el pulso se acelera pero el alma se llena de vida y la mente nos impulsa a sitios que no pensábamos podíamos llegar.

Puedes estar tranquilo, porque todos los ciclistas que tendrás alrededor el domingo durante la carrera estarán experimentando en mayor o menor medida lo mismo que tú. Los que te pasaran mucho más rápido irán sufriendo, los que van lentos y hacen más horas en bici sufren a su manera, pero todos obtienen como recompensa el indescriptible placer de rodar en bici de ruta, además en el paraíso deportivo del caribe: Cozumel.

Ahora bien, ¿cómo manejar mentalmente cuando el cuerpo pide parar?

Podemos recordar a “Mr. Shut Up Legs” Jens Voigt, a quien le preguntaron cómo hacia para soportar tanto dolor durante muchos minutos, simplemente contestó: “me digo a mí mismo: ‘shut up legs’”.

Ejemplos inspiracionales hay muchos.

Este domingo en el pelotón hay una historia magnífica, la de Fritz Thompson, quien hace 17 años sufrió un accidente automovilístico que le dejó cuadripléjico; condenado a una cama y en el mejor de los casos una silla de ruedas, vinieron tres años de infierno, depresión, crisis de autoestima y económica, espiritual y psicológica.

Me comenta: “Inexplicablemente, en mi caso se dio una recuperación muy por encima de lo esperado. Aquellos años de lucha y esfuerzo dieron fruto. Contra todo pronóstico, recuperé una gran parte de mi movilidad; aunque sigo teniendo (y tendré de por vida) atrofias motoras y sensoriales, además de una notoria debilidad en las piernas, mi vida está

totalmente reconstruida en todo sentido, soy profundamente feliz, vivo realizado y amo apasionadamente la vida. Tengo un hijo sensacional, soy conferencista y participo en carreras de alto rendimiento, como son triatlones y competencias ciclistas. Lo que nunca nadie, ni yo mismo, pensó que fuese posible.

Durante los tres años que estuve hospitalizado, aprendí que la mente y nuestros pensamientos tienen un gigantesco efecto en todo lo que nos pasa.

La mente nos hace capaces de hacer lo impensable, y al mismo tiempo puede ser la razón de nuestras desgracias si no sabemos usarla correctamente.”

Fritz maneja 14 puntos que debemos tener en cuenta, previo y durante la carrera:

1. Creencias Nuestras creencias nos deben producir una sensación de capacidad, de éxito inevitable, de ser triunfadores desde el mismo inicio de los entrenamientos, de fortaleza y de respeto por uno mismo.

2. Visualización Resulta muy importante tener en mente las imágenes de éxito, de un desempeño perfecto, de la carrera ideal durante los entrenamientos. La mente debe pasar una y otra vez momentos de alegría, de logro, de triunfo.

3. Motivación Debemos de tener una gran cantidad de entusiasmo constante por competir durante todo el proceso, previo, durante y después de la carrera.

4. Voluntad El ciclista debe tener una voluntad inquebrantable, que es esa gran capacidad de sostener el esfuerzo en todo momento, en toda circunstancia.

5. Determinación La determinación es la capacidad de mantener el deseo de logro en todo momento, en los más emocionantes, pero sobre todo en los tediosos.

6. Concentración La concentración es la capacidad para enfocar y sostener nuestros pensamientos en el lugar donde deben estar.

7. Confianza La confianza es esa sensación de que pase lo que pase, el resultado será positivo, el deseado, el esperado.

8. Enfoque correcto Tener el enfoque correcto quiere decir eliminar los fatalismos, las tragedias, las derrotas en adelantado. Quiere decir que pase lo que pase, el simple hecho de participar ya es considerado éxito.

9. Concéntrate en el proceso, no en el resultado En todo momento debemos de entender que el éxito es una consecuencia. Si hacemos lo correcto, la consecuencia natural será un resultado exitoso.

10. Manejo de la ansiedad (nerviosismo) en emoción positiva Saber manejar la ansiedad es saber encauzar el nerviosismo hacia fortaleza, confianza, deseo y todo tipo de emoción positiva.

11. Manejo de la incertidumbre En las carreras ciclistas la incertidumbre estará siempre presente. La incertidumbre debe ser manejada y no debe ser razón para disminuir nuestro esfuerzo, entusiasmo y deseo de victoria.

12. Manejo de los errores La fortaleza mental debe de darnos la capacidad para no decepcionarnos cuando nos equivocamos.

13. Manejo de los momentos de crisis En el ciclismo: el clima, la geografía, la mala hidratación y alimentación sobre la bicicleta, son errores que pueden ponernos en condiciones de desventaja y adversidad. La fortaleza mental nos da la posibilidad de gestionar esas crisis y transformarlas en entusiasmo y coraje.

14. Manejo de la decepción Finalmente debemos saber que siempre existe la posibilidad de que la decepción nos llegue. A pesar de que nosotros hagamos lo correcto, puede que a lo largo del entrenamiento y de la carrera aparezcan factores fuera de nuestro control que nos arranquen el sueño de nuestras manos. Una caída, un fallo mecánico, una lesión, nos pueden tumbar el éxito. Es necesario tener esa fortaleza emocional para gestionar la decepción y transformarla en aceptación y energía positiva para el futuro.

Motívate con esta gran historia, utiliza tu mente para que tu cuerpo la obedezca a tu nivel, que en el ciclismo amateur todos los niveles son buenos. Disfruta, cuídate y haz de este Gran Fondo una experiencia inolvidable.

Now, the big question is how do you control your mind when the body asks to stop? We all remember the phrase “Shut Up Legs” Jens Voigt, who was questioned about how he was able to endure so much pain while racing, he simply replied: “I say to myself: shut up legs”.

There are many inspirational examples but we would like to point out one GFNY Cozumel racer who will join us this year.

Fritz Thompson, who 17 years ago had a car accident that left him quadriplegic; sentenced to be in bed or the best case a wheelchair. Fritz endured three years of great depression, low self-esteem and suffered a psychological and economic crisis. Fritz says: “Inexplicably, in my case I had a beyond expectations recovery. Those years of struggle, worked. Against all odds, I recovered much of my mobility; though

I still have (and for life I will) atrophies, and weakness in my legs, my life is totally reconstructed in every sense, I am deeply happy, living to the fullest and loving life passionately. I have a sensational son, I am a speaker and participate in high performance races. Something nobody thought, not even myself, that will be possible. During those three years I was in the hospital, I learned the mind and our thoughts have a huge effect on everything that happens to us. Mind makes us capable of doing the unthinkable, and at the same time could be the reason of our disgrace, if we don’t know how to use it properly.”

Fritz has 14 points that we should have in mind, for before and during the race:

1.Beliefs Our Beliefs have to give us the sensation of capacity, of inevitable success, of being winners filled with strength and self-respect.

2. Visualization It is very important to have in mind while training, images of success, of a perfect performance, of the perfect competition. Your mind must live many joyful moments of achievements and triumph.

3. Motivation You must maintain a constant enthusiastic feeling to train and compete during the whole process, before, during and after the race.

4. Will As a cyclist you must have an unbreakable will, which is that great capacity to sustain the effort in every moment and through all circumstances.

5. Determination Determination is the ability of maintaining the effort through every moment no matter how difficult or impossible it seems.

6. Concentration Is the capacity to focus and hold our thoughts in the place where they need to be.

7. Confidence The sensation that no matter what, the outcome will be positive and achieved.

8. Correct approach It means throw out fatalism, tragedies and defeats in advance. It means that no matter what, the simple fact of having participated is considered a success.

9. Concentrate on the process, not the outcome In every moment we have to understand that success is a consequence. If we do the right things, the natural consequence will be a successful outcome.

10. Turn anxiety into positive emotions To know how to handle anxiety is to know how to channel nervousness toward strength, confidence, will and every kind of positive emotion.

11. Handle the uncertainty In a cycling race, uncertainty will always be present. Uncertainty must be managed and doesn’t need to be the reason to decrease our effort, enthusiasm and wish for victory.

12. Handle the mistakes Mental strength must give us the capacity not to be disappointed when we’re wrong.

13. Handle crisis moments In cycling: climate, terrain, poor hydration and feeding on the bike, are mistakes that can put us at a disadvantage. Mental strength gives us the energy to manage those crisis and transform them into encouragment and positive outcomes.

14. Handle deception Finally, we have to know that there always exists the possibility that deception can come. Despite doing the right thing, it’s possible that during training and racing some factors got out of your hands and took the dream from you. A tumble, a mechanical problem, an injury, can overthrow us. It is necessary to have emotional strength to manage deception, and turn it into acceptation and positive energy for the future.

El recogimiento de paquete sólo puede ser hecho en persona.

Por favor recuerda que no hay registro o recogimiento de paquete el domingo en el día de carrera.

Tus amigos y familiares se te pueden unir en la expo. La expo es gratis y abierta al público.

Los paquetes de carrera están organizados por tu número de carrera. En la entrada de la expo, checa la tabla para ver tu número asignado. En seguida, lee y firma la dispensa del GFNY Cozumel. Trae al stand tu identificación con tu número en ella.

Al dar la dispensa firmada, obtendrás tu paquete de carrera y la pulsera que te da acceso al camino.

El paquete de carrera incluye: Pulsera, la cual va a ser puesta en tu brazo en el recogimiento de paquete y deberá ser conservada puesta hasta el final de la carrera. La pulsera te servirá como ticket para tu comida gratis (pasta) en el área de recuperación.

Placa con el número de bici, chip de cronometraje y broches que deberás poner al frente de tu bici.

Número dorsal con pins de seguridad para sujetarlo al bolsillo trasero de tu jersey. El número dorsal también servirá para identificar tu bici registrada y mochila.

In order to check in please bring your government issued photo id and email conformation. Packet pickup can only be done in person. Please note that there is no registration or packet pickup on Sunday race day.

Your friends and family can join you at the expo. The expo is free and open to the public.

Race packets are organized by your race number. At the expo entrance, check the board for your assigned number. Next, read and sign the GFNY Cozumel waiver. Bring your photo id to the stand with your number on it. In return for the signed waiver you get your race packet and the wristband that allows you access onto the course

RACE PACKET INCLUDES

Wristband which will be attached to your wrist at packet pick up and must be kept on until the end of the race. The wristband serves as your free meal ticket at the pasta recovery area.

Bike number plate with timing chip and zip ties that you must attach to the front of your bike.

Bib number with safety pins to attach to the back pocket of your jersey. The bib number will also identify your checked bike and bag.

Keep your race packet handy, next you will go to pick up your race jersey. The jersey is mandatory attire for the race. You will receive the jersey size that’s marked on your envelope, which is the size you selected during registration. If your jersey doesn’t fit then you may go over to the Jersey Exchange area to see if they have another size available. Jersey are supposed to fit tight.

Yes, we have a limited quantity of GFNY Cozumel apparel and accessories available for purchase at the pre-race expo. The quantities are limited and sold on a first-come- first-serve basis.

If you are worried about item availability, we recommend preordering online in our online shop, gfnycozumel.myshopify.com or coming to the expo early on Friday to have the greatest selection and size availability. All online orders must be picked up Friday or Saturday at the boutique with a photo id and receipt.

P: Mi agenda cambió y no puedo ir a Cozumel, ¿puede algún amigo recoger mi bolsa de regalos por mí?

Q: My schedule changed and I can’t come to Cozumel. Can my friend pick up my goodie bag for me?

Yes. Send an email to your friend, authorizing them to pick up your goodie bag, along with a copy of your photo ID. Then at the expo your friend can show the email and a copy of your ID at the check-in booth to pick up your goodie bag and jersey for you. The goodie bag will not include the race chip or number.

P: Estaré volando la noche del Sábado, ¿puede mi amigo recoger mi paquete de carrera por mí?

Q: I’m flying in on Saturday night. Can my friend pick up my race packet for me?

No. For security reasons, every participant has to be present at packet pickup on Friday or Saturday. If you cannot make it to the expo to pick up your race packet, you will forfeit taking part in the event. We recommend changing your flight to arrive in Cozumel to make it to the expo in time.

RULES

1. GFNY COZUMEL (“GFNY”) es una carrera de ciclismo, donde los participantes están cronometrados individualmente.

2. Registro 2.1. La entrada a GFNY está abierta a ciclistas de 18 años o más. La inscripción se hace en línea en www.gfnycozumel.com.

Las inscripciones en línea cierran al llegar a 3,000 corredores o el 5 de noviembre, lo que pase primero. Después de esta fecha, todas las entradas disponibles se venderán en la Expo GFNY Cozumel, los días 9 y 10 de noviembre. GFNY tiene la total discreción sobre números de entradas y cortes de fecha.

Las bicicletas que no sean seguras podrán ser prohibidas en cualquier momento durante el evento.

3.2. Manubrios de Triatlón/Aero-barras están permitidos si el ciclista mantiene las dos manos en las palancas de freno mientras conduce a una distancia mínima de 10 metros de otro ciclista.

Una violación a esta regla puede llevar a la descalificación inmediata. Bicicletas de triatlón comenzarán en los corrales traseros.

1. GFNY Cozumel (“GFNY”) is a bike ride where riders are individually timed.

2. Entry 2.1. The entry to GFNY is open to riders aged 18 or older. Registration is done online at www.gfnycozumel.com. Online entry closes at 3,000 riders or on November 5, whichever comes first. After that, any available entries will be sold at GFNY Cozumel Bike Expo on Nov 9 and 10. GFNY has the sole discretion over entry numbers and cut off dates.

2.2. Riders who have been banned by a federation for a doping violation will be refused.

2.3. Each rider has to ensure that his/her health condition is sufficient for the event.

2.4. Each rider is responsible for having sufficient insurance coverage. GFNY may offer additional insurance at its sole discretion.

2.5. Entries are not refundable, transferrable or deferrable. No rider shall be entitled to an entry fee refund in case of disqualification.

2.6. GFNY reserves the right, in its sole and complete discretion, deny entry, revoke the entry application of any applicant at any time, and/or to disqualify any individual from the event.

3. Equipment 3.1. Bike: any technically serviceable roadworthy bicycle is permitted. The following are not permitted for safety reasons: prone bicycles, recumbent bikes and bicycles with chair seating (except for challenged athletes), wristband at the checkpoint will be penny farthings or mono cycles. Unsafe bikes can be banned at any time during the event.

3.2. Triathlon handlebars are permitted IF the rider keeps both hands at the brake levers while riding within 10 meters of another rider. A violation can lead to immediate disqualification. Triathlon bikes will be seeded in the rear corrals.

3.3. Helmets must be worn by all riders at all times and have to be securely fastened with a chinstrap at all times while riding.

3.4. Jersey: the official event jersey of the respective year must be worn at all times. No exceptions. Wearing a different jersey will lead to a severe time penalty or disqualification.

3.5. Bike number: the number plate with the chip timing straps on the back must be attached to the handlebar and be clearly visible from the front at all times.

3.3. Los participantes deberán de usar casco en todo momento durante la carrera, segura y correctamente sujetado de la correa de la barbilla.

3.4 Jersey: el jersey oficial del evento, del año respectivo, debe ser llevado puesto todo el tiempo. No hay excepciones. Utilizar un jersey diferente llevará a una severa penalización de tiempo o a la descalificación.

4. Salida 4.1. Los corrales de salida abrirán a las 6:00 am en Rafael E. Melgar y Av. 11. A ciclistas sin su jersey GFNY, número de bicicleta, número de jersey, casco y pulsera en el punto de control, se les negará el acceso a los corrales de salida.

4.2. El área de salida cerrará a las 7:00 am. Si un participante llega tarde, no podrá entrar en el área o competir.

4.3. Orden de inicio: (1): Lista Rossa: campeones del año pasado (general, edad, grupos, equipos), VIP. (2): Corrales competitivos.

(2.1): Los ciclistas con licencia en varios corrales de acuerdo a su ranking. Requisito mínimo: Categoría 1-3 Hombres; Categoría 1-2 Mujeres; Categoría 1-2 Masters Hombres; Categoría 1 Masters Mujeres y su equivalente internacional.

GFNY se reserva el derecho de excluir a categorías bajas si hay demasiadas solicitudes. Peticiones para corrales de carrera no serán atendidas después del 16 de octubre de 2018.

4.2. The starting corrals close at 7:00 am. If a rider is late, he/she will not be able to enter the start area or be eligible for competition.

4.3. Start order: (1) Lista Rossa: Returning champions from the previous year (overall, age groups, teams), VIP (2) Competitive corrals (2.1) Licensed racers in several corrals according to their ranking.

Minimum requirement: Cat 1-3 Men, Cat 1-2 Women, Cat 1-2 Masters Men, Cat 1 Masters Women and their international equivalent.

GFNY reserves the right to exclude low categories if there are too many requests.

Race corral requests may not be honored after October 16, 2018.

(4.) GFNY Cozumel Half Distance 50 mile participants.

(5.) Challenged athletes with hand-cycles.

Riders have to start in their designated corral. Riders are allowed to start in a corral further back than their designated corral. If a rider attempts to get in a corral further ahead than allocated he/she will be disqualified.

5. Competition 5.1. All riders are timed by chip timing from start to finish. Overall rankings are determined by gun time. Age group and King of the Wind rankings are determined by net (chip) time.

Only riders who complete the full GFNY course are eligible for competition ranking and prizes. GFNY reserves the right, in its sole and complete discretion, to change the rules if deemed appropriate.

5.2. Categories Categories is determined by riders age December 31st: 1. overall m/f 5. 50-54 m/f 9. 65-69 m 2. 18-39 m/f 6. 55-59 m/f 10. 70-74 m 3. 40-44 m/f 7. 60-64 m/f 11. 75+ m 4. 45-49 m/f 8. 65+ f 12. under 90 him & her times of a mixed gender team added.

Riders have to be within 30 seconds at each check-point. Outside assistance between teammates is permitted and encouraged. No devices to push or drag are allowed.

5.3 Los premios se otorgarán a los tres primeros lugares de cada categoría de la distancia de 160 km. La distribución de los premios será a discreción de GFNY. Los premios que no sean reclamados durante la premiación serán distribuidos a otros corredores. Los premios no serán enviados.

5.4. Todas las reclamaciones de la orden de los finalistas serán examinadas y resueltas por un juez, cuya decisión será definitiva e inapelable. Es responsabilidad del participante familiarizarse con las reglas del evento y la ruta antes del mismo. Tomar rutas alternativas o tomar atajos ocasionará la descalificación y el baneo de eventos futuros de GFNY. 6. Abuso 6.1. Ningún ciclista puede faltarle al respeto a los directores de carrera, funcionarios, empleados, otros ciclistas, voluntarios o espectadores.

5.3. Prizes will be awarded to the top three in each category of the 160 km distance. Distribution of the prizes is at the sole discretion of GFNY. Prizes not picked up at the awards will be distributed to other riders. Prizes will not be shipped.

5.4. All protests concerning the order of finish shall be examined and resolved by the chief judge, whose decision is final and without appeal. It is the rider’s responsibility to familiarize himself/herself with the rules of the event and the course before the start. Taking alternate routes or cutting the course short leads to disqualification from the current competition and to a ban at future GFNY. 6. Abuse 6.1. No rider may be disrespectful toward race directors, officials, staff, riders, volunteers or spectators.

6.2. No rider may use foul or abusive language or conduct during GFNY. 6.3. No rider may assault (an unlawful attempt, coupled with the present ability, to commit a violent injury on the person of another to anyone connected with GFNY (including but not limited to riders, spectators, public officials, volunteers, staff, etc.).

6.4. Any of the above will lead to disqualification and a lifelong ban for GFNY events.

7. Conduct 7.1. Cyclists have to obey all laws of the road including traffic lights and stop signs unless overwritten by police.

7.2. No rider may make an abrupt motion so as to interfere with the forward progress of another rider, either intentionally or by accident.

7.3. Any rider who appears to represent a danger to the other riders may be disqualified by GFNY either before, during, or after the event.

7.4. Pushing or pulling or any other physical assistance among riders is prohibited in all categories except the him & her categories where pushing or pulling is encouraged. Devices of any sort to pull or push are not allowed.

7.5. Team cars or personal support cars are not allowed.

7.6. If a rider is laying on the ground and is visibly in difficulty, any following rider has to stop and help unless there are already at least three people helping. You may continue if a) the victim is fine or b) medical personnel has arrived.

7.7. Any misconduct with respect to the above can lead to disqualification and a life long band to future GFNY events.

8. Environment GFNY is committed to protecting the environment. Any discarding of trash or food outside the designated trash receptacles at the aid stations or “eco zones” is prohibited and can lead to disqualification and a lifelong ban at GFNY Cozumel. Any urinating in public is prohibited and can lead to disqualification and a lifelong ban at GFNY events.

9. Performance Enhancing Drugs 9.1 GFNY is committed to a drug free sport. Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED) are prohibited in preparation for and during GFNY. GFNY reserves the right to enforce doping controls before, during and after the event.

9.2 Any violation of World Anti Doping Association (WADA) rules will lead to disqualification, reclaim of prizes and a lifelong ban at GFNY events. GFNY shares positive doping controls with other event organizations as well as the public at large once USADA determined a rule violation.

9.3 If a rider declines to be tested, he/she will be banned.

9.4 A Rider who tests positive at GFNY will have to reimburse the cost of the doping control. Furthermore, such rider has to reimburse GFNY for any damages to its reputation that are a consequence of his/her positive doping control. If the rider is part of a team participating at GFNY, the team can be held liable for this damage.

GFNY participants are highly encouraged to stay informed about PEDs and PED testing. GFNY recommends the USADA Athlete handbook.

10. Acceptance of Risk All those who ride and compete under these rules do so at their own risk. No liability shall attach to GFNY or any of its officials with respect to any loss or injury sustained or caused by anyone competing or riding in GFNY. 11. Rule Changes Rules can be altered if deemed necessary at sole discretion of GFNY.

The Him & Her team competition consists of two age categories: sub-90 and 90+ years old combined.

Members of Him & Her teams are not eligible for individual age group prizes because rider assistance between the team members in this category is permitted and encouraged.

There are 8 aid stations on the course for the 160 km but if you can pack some gels into your jersey pocket then you won’t need to stop and refuel so often.

It’s a small price to pay and you’ll be happy you won’t get stuck on the side of the road in Cozumel waiving for a mechanic.

PLAN YOUR RACE MORNING: we recommend that you arrive to the start line by 6:00 am to get a good position in your starting corral. This will give you enough time to go to the bathroom, clear security, do a final bike check and get into your start corral. If you arrive late then you will be placed in the rear corrals by security.

CHECK YOUR TIRES: check your tires for holes, glass, or overall wear and tear. If you have any of the above it’s better to get new tires and avoid a flat on the GFNY Cozumel course.

CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST: make sure you wear the right gear for the days weather. Cozumel is known for having sudden rain showers so you want to be prepared just in case maybe with a light rain jacket or vest.

PACK YOUR SPARE TUBE, CO2, AND TIRE LEVERS: we say this again and again, learn how to change your own tires and you’ll have a much better time. Pack all the necessary equipment to change a flat by yourself on the course and you’ll save valuable time.

Place the bike number plate at the front of your handlebar and attach it with the provided zip ties. Your bike plate identifies you as an official participant to police and GFNY Cozumel staff. It also has your timing chips attached to it, and the timing chips will only work if the bike plate is unaltered and attached as instructed.

Only hand bags or backpack size bags will be accepted measuring maximum (40 x 46 cm). Make sure that your bag is closed properly, the bag check number is attached well and the number is clearly visible. Your bag check number will be the same as you bib number.

Bag drop will be located by the start/finish line next to the City Hall. Both 160 km and 80 km distance participants will receive their bags after the race at the same location you dropped it off at.

Don’t leave any valuables in the bag because GFNY Cozumel is not responsible for any wet, lost or stolen item.

RACE CORRALS The corrals are divided by these categories; VIP, top 10% of previous GFNY races, licensed riders, 160 km distance age group riders, 80 km distance riders. and physically challenged. If your friends are in your distance category, you will be in the same starting corral.

However, if you are in a different distance category, you can still start the event together but the person in the front must move to the back corral where the friend is.

• How fast do i have to ride?

You can ride as fast as you want. However, the cutoff for completing the event is at 4:00 pm, which means you have 8 1/2 hours to complete the full course. This is approximately 10 mph including stopping at aid stations. A broom wagon will trail the course at 10 mph. Stragglers who get passed by the car can either get a ride or will be riding on their own outside the event.

• Will there be restrooms at the start/finish and the course?

Yes the start/finish area plus aid stations are equipped with portapotties.

 ¿Si tengo un problema mecánico durante el recorrido?

Animamos ampliamente a todos los participantes a que tengan habilidades básicas de seguridad y reparación, en particular para arreglar una llanta pinchada. Todos tienen que traer bomba, herramientas y una cámara de repuesto, sin embargo si aún así no te es posible realizar la reparación, vehículos de apoyo mecánico y scooters con mecánicos del GFNY Cozumel estarán conduciendo a lo largo de la ruta a través del día. • If i have a mechanical issue on the course?

We highly encourage all participants to have basic safety and repair skills, and in particular fixing a flat tire. Everyone has to bring at least a pump, levers, and a spare tube. However if you are still unable to make the repair, rolling mechanical support vehicles and scooters with GFNY Cozumel mechanics will be driving along the route throughout the day. If you have a mechanical that cannot be easily fixed, there will be transportation to take you back to the finish area. Please note that the wait for assistance and/ or the broom wagon can be long and by waiting you run the risk of falling out of the cutoff and being able to finish the event. Visit your local bike shop to learn the basic repair skills, check out online videos or ask an experienced cycling friend.

• If i need medical assistance what do i do?

Emergency medical service and kits will be at the aid stations, on the course and on call. There will also be rolling ambulances circling the route throughout the day. Police officers, marshals, and bike mechanics will be traveling on the course on motorcycles and in cars. Police officers will be stationed at the intersections controlling traffic and volunteers will be guiding the cyclists for turns at various locations. Each of these people will be able to assist in-case of an emergency. If you need help inform someone on the course and they will get help to you as quickly as possible and stay with you until help arrives. No matter at what point help will always be close.

 Si necesito ayuda médica, ¿qué debo hacer?

El servicio médico de emergencia y los kits estarán en las estaciones de ayuda, en el recorrido y por llamada. Habrá también ambulancias en los alrededores de la ruta a través del día. Oficiales de policía, jefes de policía y mecánicos de bicicletas estarán recorriendo el camino en motocicletas y carros. • If you have a bad day and realize i wont be able to finish, what do i do?

GFNY Cozumel will have SAG (Support and Gear) vehicles along the course for any cyclists who are unable to complete the event.

Try to make it to the next or previous aid station, there you will have food, water, emergency medical services as well as volunteers to keep you company. If you are unable to ride to an aid station, move off the road and wait at the shoulder of the road until a mechanic or SAG rides by, they will be on the lookout for stopped cyclists. If you are riding and you see a cyclist on the side of the road who needs help, when you get to the next police officer or volunteer, report that you saw a stopped cyclist and their approximate location, they will call for an ambulance.

Q: i’m signed up for the gfny cozumel 80 km distance. If on race day i feel great and want to continue to finish the 160km distance is that ok?

Yes, you don’t need to do anything or notify anyone, your results will automatically be calculated by our timers for the full 160 km distance when you cross the finish line.

 Si tengo un mal día y me doy cuenta de que no seré capaz de llegar a la meta, ¿qué debo hacer?

GFNY Cozumel tendrá vehículos de Apoyo y Orientación (SAG por sus siglas en inglés) durante el trayecto para cualquier ciclista que no pueda completar el evento. Trata de hacerlo en una de las estaciones de ayuda, ahí tendrás comida, agua, servicios médicos de emergencia, así como voluntarios para mantenerte acompañado. Si no puedes llegar a una estación de ayuda, sal del camino y espera en la cuneta hasta que un mecánico o SAG pase por ahí, ellos estarán buscando ciclistas detenidos. Si estás rodando y ves a un ciclista que necesita ayuda al lado del camino, cuando llegues donde haya un oficial de policía o voluntario, repórtale que viste un ciclista detenido y su locación aproximada, ellos le llamarán a una ambulancia.

• Are triathlon bikes or aero bars allowed? Triathlon bikes and aero bars are permitted but when you are in the aero bars you must keep a distance of 10 meters from the riders to the front or rear of you. Any riders caught in the aero positon when riders are closer than 10 meters will be time penalized.

The four fastest times from a team will be added and ranked to determine the fastest team. If your team has 8 members or more, your team will be broken out as follows: fastest 4 members will be “Your Team Name A”, the next 4 fastest members will be “Your Team Name B”, etc, in the team results.

 ¿Se permiten bicis de triatlón o aerobarras?

Las bicis de triatlón y aerobarras están permitidas, pero cuando estés utilizando estas últimas deberás mantener una distancia de 10 metros respecto a los corredores al frente y detrás de ti.

Cualquier ciclista descubierto utilizando aerobarras estando a menos de 10 metros de distancia de otros corredores, será penalizado.  Quiero evitar la descalificación. ¿Cuáles son las reglas que debo acatar?

 ¿Qué sucede después de que cruzo la línea de llegada?

El GFNY Cozumel termina con vistas espectaculares del Caribe mexicano a lo largo de la avenida frente al océano. La meta será el mismo lugar de salida, que es cruzando la avenida desde el Municipio. Tanto el trayecto de 160 km, como el de 80 km, terminan en el mismo sitio.

Asegúrate de sonreír una vez que cruces la línea de meta, porque los fotógrafos de Sportograf estarán tomando fotos de todos los que finalicen.

Después entrarás en el área de recuperación y recibirás la medalla de finalizador del GFNY, una toalla fresca y húmeda para quitar toda la sal y sudor de tu cara, además habrá una buena selección de frutas, Powerade, agua fría y muchos bocadillos para ayudarte a relajar los músculos.

Desde aquí tendrás la opción de aparcar tu bici en nuestra zona segura de estacionamiento.

• What happens after I cross the finish line?

GFNY Cozumel finishes with spectacular views of the Mexican Caribbean ocean along the oceanfront avenue. The finish line will be the same location as the start area, which is across the street from the city hall (Municipio). 160 km and 80 km courses finish in the same location. Make sure to smile once you cross the finish line since Sportograf photographers will be taking pictures of everyone crossing. You will then enter the recovery area and receive your GFNY Cozumel finisher medal, a cool wet towel to wipe away all the salt and sweat from your face, plus there will be a nice selection of fruits, Powerade, cold water and various snacks to help cool your muscles. From there you will have the option to park your bicycle in our secure bike-parking zone.

• Can I get a massage at the finish area?

There will be a team of massage therapists at the finish area ready to help relax your muscles after your long day on the saddle.

 ¿Puedo tener un masaje en el área de llegada?

Habrá un equipo de masajistas en la meta, listos para ayudarte a relajar tus músculos después de tu largo día en el sillín.

• Where can I find my results?

Race results will be located at the results tent next door to the GFNY Cozumel boutique. You will also be able to find your results with our live results app which will be available shortly before the race.

 ¿Dónde puedo encontrar mis resultados?

• Is the Pasta Party free to everyone?

Yes. All GFNY Cozumel riders receive one free meal with their wristband. Additional meals are available for family and friends for purchase at the finish area. Sit back, relax, have a beer and listen to live entertainment while enjoying the oceanfront setting as you go over your days achievements and challenges with all your family and friends.

 ¿A qué hora comienza la ceremonia de premiación?

Este año habrá dos ceremonias de premiación , la primera comenzará a las 12 pm para los ganadores de la general (masculino/femenino) en las distancias de 160 y 80 km.

La segunda ceremonia de premiación comenzará a la 2:00 (tentativamente) para los grupos por edad y ganadores por categoría de las distancias de 160 y 80 km. La ceremonia de premiación comenzará en el área de meta, cerca del podio.

Todos los participantes deberán checar sus resultados para ver si ganaron un lugar en el podio, y de ser así deberán entrar en la carpa de ganadores, la cual estará atrás del podio. La carpa de ganadores es donde todos los triunfadores serán llamados hacia el escenario para recibir sus premios y trofeos.

• What time does the awards ceremony start?

This year there will be two awards ceremonies. The first will start at 12 pm for the Overall female/male winners of the 160 km & 80 km distance. The second awards ceremony will start at 2:00 pm (tentatively) for the age group & category winners of the 160 km & 80 km distances. The award ceremony will start at the finish area by the podium area.

All participants must check their results to see if they placed a podium position and if so they must enter the winners tent which is located in the rear of the podium. The winners tent is where all winners will be called up to the stage to receive your prizes and trophies.

 ¿Habrá una rifa?

Estaremos dando muchos premios de rifa en la fiesta de recuperación Señor Frog’s, a las 8 pm. Para poder participar deberás recoger el ticket de rifa en la boutique GFNY Cozumel.

Todos los participantes pueden tomar parte. Este año los premios incluyen Trek Emonda ALR, ruedas y accesorios de bicicleta Bontrager y mucho más. Invitamos a todo mundo a que venga y celebre con nosotros. Todos los participantes deberán estar presentes en la rifa para poder ganar.

• Will there be a raffle?

This year we will be giving away many raffle prizes at the Señor Frog’s Recovery party at 8 pm. In order to participate you must pick up your raffle ticket at the GFNY Cozumel boutique. All participants are able to participate. This year prizes include Trek Emonda ALR, Bontrager wheels and bicycle accessories and much more. We invite everyone to come and celebrate with us. All participants must be present at the raffle in order to win.

 ¿Cómo regreso desde la meta?

Dependiendo de dónde te estés quedando, puedes o rodar de vuelta, o tomar un taxi de regreso a tu hotel. Habrá muchos taxis esperando por llevarte. Si rentaste un carro y lo estacionaste cerca de la meta, muchos caminos estarán abiertos para que puedas conducir a tu hotel.

• How do i get back from the finish?

Depending where you’re staying you can either ride back or take a taxi back to your hotel. There will be plenty of taxis on standby waiting to take you back. If you rented a car and parked it near the finish line most side roads will be open for you to drive back to your hotel.

 No me quedé a la ceremonia de premiación, pero estuve en el Top 3 de mi grupo por edad, ¿pueden mandarme mi premio por correo?

No, no mandamos ningún premio por correo. Debes estar presente en la ceremonia para reclamar tu premio.

• I didn’t stay for the awards ceremony but was top 3 of my age group, can you mail me my prize?

No, we don’t mail any prizes. You must be present at the awards ceremony to claim your prize.

La celebración en la meta, dando la bienvenida a todos los finalizadores, comenzará a las 10 am, donde habrá bandas y entretenimiento para que todos disfruten. El año pasado hubo un emocionante sprint final, así que llega temprano para agarrar un buen lugar.

Q: What time will the first riders cross the finish line?

The Finish line celebration welcoming all finishers will start at 10 am where there will be bands and entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Last year was an exciting sprint finish so come early to get a good spot.

Q:My family would like to follow me in

a car is that allowed?

The GFNY Cozumel course will be closed to cars and traffic. Only permitted race vehicles will have access to the course with special passes.

P: ¿A mi familia le gustaría seguirme en un carro, eso se permite?

El GFNY Cozumel estará cerrado para los carros y el tráfico. Sólo carros permitidos de carrera tendrán acceso a la ruta, con pases especiales.

Q: What are the best spots to watch

the race on the course?

If you’re located in the northern section of the island then by the intersection of 11 av. and Rafael E. Melgar is a nice turn where you can see the riders race by. If you want to see the riders race through the downtown then any location on the 30 avenue would be great to cheer the riders as they go by as well. From those locations you would still be able to walk to the finish line as long as you leave in time.

P: ¿Cuáles son los mejores puntos para mirar la carrera en el camino?

Si te localizas en la sección norte de la isla, en la intersección entre la Av. 11 y Rafael E. Melgar, hay una buena vuelta donde puedes ver a todos los ciclistas pasar. Si quieres ver a todos los ciclistas correr a través del centro, entonces cualquier lugar en la Av. 30 será genial para animarlos mientras pasan por ahí.

Desde esas locaciones podrás caminar al área de meta, siempre y cuando lo hagas a tiempo.

P: ¿Hay un área donde mis hijos puedan jugar mientras esperamos a que lleguen los corredores?

Sí, hay un campo de juegos para niños en el área de llegada con sombra y actividades para que ellos disfruten.

P: Veo que está la Pasta Party La Moderna en él área de meta, ¿puede mi familia comer conmigo?

Sí, tu familia se te puede unir a la Pasta Party post-carrera, patrocinada por Pasta La Moderna. Cada participante de GFNY Cozumel podrá mostrar su pulsera y recibir una comida gratis, mientras que los espectadores podrán comprar un ticket de comida directamente en el área de llegada. ¡Alístate para hacer ruido!

GFNY Cozumel estará dando aplaudidores en la línea de llegada para celebrar y animar a todos los participantes que vayan cruzando la meta. Entre más ruido hagas, mejor. Dile a tus familiares y amigos que lleguen al área de meta lo más temprano posible, ya que los lugares se estarán llenando muy rápido, pues anticipamos para este año un final al sprint.

Q: Is there an area my kids can play and enjoy while we wait for the finishers?

Yes. There is a kids’ playground at the finish area with shade and activities for them to enjoy.

Q: I see there is a La Moderna Pasta Party at the GFNY Cozumel finish area. Can my family eat with me?

Yes, your family can join you at the post-race Pasta Party sponsored by La Moderna Pasta.

Each GFNY Cozumel participant will show their wristband and receive one free meal and spectators are able to purchase a meal ticket directly at the finish area.

GET READY TO MAKE SOME NOISE! GFNY Cozumel will be giving away clappers by the finish line to celebrate and cheer all the participants crossing the finish line. The more noise you make the better. Tell your family and friends to get to the finish area early as spots will fill up very quickly as we anticipate this year will be a sprint finish. We will also be handing out clappers in other areas of the race route, so where ever you are make a lot of noise when the riders go by.
