URBAN REDESIGN Project: Urban redesign of the Karaiskaki

area in Pireus city Tutors: Ioannis Kizis, Nikolaos Belavilas In collaboration with: Vassiliki Asprogeraka, Vassiliki Karagianni REDESIGN GOALS The object of this course was the redesign of an urban area in the suburbs of the city Pireus, next to the Karaiskaki Stadium. The area included a stadium, a train station, a huge empty space that was until then used as a parking area for the stadium and a large housing area next to the stadium. The redesign was aiming to rearrange the planning of the already existing functions and uses and to resolve the relationshiops between them. The new project should include an urban park, a shopping area, and a group of housing complexes. The new design had to be harmonized with the existing urban environment, so the streets, communication axes, urban blocks and voids were the subject of the design research. The objectives of the redesign were: _the integration of the study area in the nearby region _the connection of the area to the waterfront of Pireus _the organisation and planning of the movements of cars and pedestrians _the design of a public green and a housing area next to the park

THE PARK & SHOPPING AREAS THE REDESIGN PROPOSAL The park was designed near the stadium, leaving an intermediate stip of shopping and entertainment facilities. Between the shopping facilities and the stadium, a central axe was designed, for the connection of the park and other shopping facilities to the housing area. This axe could enable the movement of the citizens to the nearby area through the park, which was turned into a new pole of attraction for the surrounding neighbourhoods. The housing complexes were designed according to the orientation of the sun, having as a main point of reference the principles of bioclimatic design. The typology of housing complexes was studied, in order to lead to a design proposal of 4 different types of appartments, small and bigger ones that could satisfy different needs of the inhabitants.
