RESTORATION AND RESUSE OF KERNEL OIL AND SOAP Project: Graduation project about the reuse

of an industrial complex in the premised of St. Stefano’s (Chalkis, Greece) Tutors: George Makris, Eleni Alexandrou, Nikos Belavilas In collaboration with: Vassiliki Asprogeraka, Vassiliki Karagianni The project was conducted in the field of Building Technology and it regards the restoration of an industrial complex built in the beginning of the 20th century; it has a particular architectural value, and the proposal for housing new uses in the already existent shell. Plan of the industrial complex and it’s surrounding area

INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN CHALKIS Its new use was intended to transform it into a cinema centre, comprising an exposition space for the cinema, a Greek film archive as well as the facilities for the necessary spaces for the creation of short films. The complex was thus planned so as to meet the demands of the Documentary Festival taking place in Chalcis once a year. The intention of this project was the bringing into prominence and preservation of the industrial complex which is expected to become a pole of attraction and development of the area.

The design of the additions occured with the utmost respect for the existent shell while the whole constructive system is primary built out of metal. The old cluster retains its present appearance in the outer side for reasons of historic memory and architectural value, while opposite to the rough surfaces of the stone walls of the factory, new shiny sleek bulks are placed to cater for the new uses, creating an optical antithesis to the visitor. In order to avoid a future collapse of the stone walls, the structure was reinforced with a thin layer of cement. Furthermore, in order to retain the sense of a big free space, the additions do not take up the whole covering of the complex. The proposal regards an experimental suggestion, as realistic as possible, that houses new uses to only a part of the industrial complex. The rest of the spaces can be used to a future expansion of the cinema center.

NEW USES FOR OLD BUILDINGS

Outdoor spaces are designed in the Each new use is placed into difinnner part of the factory’s shells. The ferent volumes // Each one of the new uses are differentiated from the old buildings defines a different old structure use

DESIGN PRINCIPLE

The relationship between volumes and Introvert design // The cinema voids is researched // Not every existing center is designed so as to crebuilding is filled with a new use // A ate a lively cultural center in the future expansion is planned inner courtyard

THE NEW USES REMAIN WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF THE OLD SHELL The concrete layer that supports the already existing walls of the industrial complex, creates a new image of the interior of buildings. In cases where dark areas are required for the new uses, the concrete layer is folded back, passes through the openings and closes them. The cinema center is placed in the shell with the less openings, which are closed so as not to let any light enter the building. On the other hand, the exhibition spaces and the cafeteria are located in the center of the complex at the most public and open building of the whole complex. The new composition primarily remains within the boundaries of the old shells. while only individuals elements overcome the old structure,

NEW USES ARE DEFINED BY NEW MATERIALS NEW DESIGN REQUIREMENTS The cinema center will host the Documentary Festival of Chalkis which is held once a year, but it also aims to provide a lively area for culture and recreation . More specifically, the complex is designed in order to host:
