FOR THE
Annual Report • Twenty-Thirteen
As Gleaning For The World celebrates its 15th year of operation, I have never been more excited than I am right now about this humanitarian aid organization. During 2013, a dedicated staff of professionals and our worldwide partners were able to help more than 6,000,000 people during their most trying times. Whether we were responding to those impacted by tornadoes in the Midwest or reaching around the world to help displaced Syrian refugees in the Middle East, Gleaning For The World was often among the first on the scene and the most relentless in helping people get back on their feet. I continue to be amazed at how much good is done from the warehouses in Concord, Virginia. Built on the dream of founder Ron Davidson, this non-profit is actively growing and expanding in order to help the most hurting people among us. With a priority on efficiency, there are few organizations that can boast of maximizing resources in the way Gleaning For The World consistently achieves. The organization is strong and properly positioned to continue its global impact. As you read through the 2013 Annual Report, I encourage you to think about how you might partner with us in this awesome work. The opportunities range from volunteerism to product support to financial support. This is a worthy cause for which you can confidently invest your time, talent and treasure. So, celebrate 2013 in the pages of this report, but let’s also dream about all that can be done in the years ahead. Fifteen years and counting - the best is yet to come! Sincerely,
Pastor Jonathan Falwell Chairman of the Board

FOR THE
Twenty-thirteen was a remarkable year in Gleaning For The World’s global ministry. It was a year that highlighted the value of our strategic partnerships, which allowed us to reach more hurting people than ever before. Utilizing churches in the United States as distribution centers in times of natural disaster proved to be invaluable. And, accessing the firsthand knowledge of our partner missionaries around the world empowered us to meet needs in an effective and culturally-sensitive manner. All in all, it was a year of dramatic impact. Internationally, we provided medical supplies, new shoes, school materials, stuffed animals, water and other basic items to help the most impoverished regions of our world. The most visible impact happened when Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines - causing widespread havoc that tore the country apart. We reacted within hours, and provided funding for critical lifesaving supplies. As relief efforts progressed, Gleaning For The World collaborated with other non-profits and missionaries to provide food, medical supplies and other relief items. It was also a year that required a new level of response in the United States. We began 2013 helping the northeast rebuild from the effects of SuperStorm Sandy. We helped families impacted by the intense tornado outbreak in Oklahoma and Illinois. We responded to widespread flooding in Colorado. As the cold weather approached in late 2013, we actively increased our distribution of blankets to help the homeless and those living in temporary shelter. Yes, our strategic partnerships allowed us to meet immediate needs. However, none of our work would have been possible without our committed financial partners and loyal volunteers. This year’s Annual Report is dedicated to each of you who sacrificed in 2013 to help people at their greatest time of need. We thank you for making a difference with your resources. We thank you for the time you have given in service to our cause. We thank you for the positive, practical impact you have made in individual lives around the world.

A MINISTRY TO COVER THEM ALL
“These blankets are such a Godsend, the quality, the thickness, the size of them you can’t really describe it. We have had people donate blankets before, but often they are little fleece blankets and wouldn’t keep me warm on my sofa let alone being out in the wind. These blankets that Gleaning For The World is providing are such a tremendous help to the people out there. It’s hard to imagine doing this program without them. It just wouldn’t happen.”
Kel Long, III • Co-founder • Project Three-Oh-We-Go An essential item in our inventory is the wool-blend blanket. It is designed for homeless programs and disaster relief. During 2013 alone, we distributed 89,568 blankets to those in need across the United States. After participating in a blanket distribution project to the homeless in Atlanta this year, one of our staff members shared the impact of his experience: “I can’t remember seeing so much gratitude in a person’s eyes. We chanced upon an elderly man in downtown Atlanta on a very cold, damp misty night. He was wearing a thin pair of pants that were too short and had only a thin jacket. He was attempting to sleep on a sidewalk with no covering at all --- only
a single small piece of cardboard was underneath him. We gave him blankets, gloves and a stocking hat. I don’t know his name, often the homeless won’t share their names, but I will always remember his eyes.” Roy St. John, Field Coordinator, Disaster Relief In December 2013, during a particularly cold winter storm, residents in Lexington, Kentucky on fixed incomes gladly accepted blankets. According to Sheriff Kathy Witt, “Whether the temperature is 6° or 46°, residents can’t afford to turn up their thermostats. The blankets and surplus jackets made a huge difference.” Our financial donors make it possible for us to help fellow Americans during harsh winter months.
CENTRAL VIRGINIA CARES Gleaning For The World placed over 170,000 pounds of food into the Central Virginia area in 2013 Many of our friends and neighbors in Central Virginia are considered “food insecure,” a term coined in the 1990’s by the USDA. This term describes a predicament where families and individuals do not know where their next meal is coming from. Through local grants and generous donors, Gleaning was able to support established food banks, church pantries, soup kitchens and shelters throughout 2013. That funding went directly into the community through produce deliveries, including potatoes and apples delivered to our Concord warehouse in 40,000 pound truck loads.
Gleaning then sponsored three separate “pack-a-thons” where committed volunteers helped pack and prepare the produce for distribution. Additionally, non-perishable pantry staples such as canned meats, vegetables, fruits, cereals, pasta, flour, sugar and even snack items (juices, coffee and tea) leave the Gleaning warehouse on a regular basis. Complementary items like paper products, disposable plates and eating utensils were also included in these donations. In 2013, a total of 173 pallets weighing 171,000 pounds valued at $207,455 were distributed to our friends and neighbors.

LENDING A HELPING HAND TO MOORE, OKLAHOMA Winds estimated at 210 miles per hour swept through the small town of Moore, Oklahoma killing 24 people in May 2013. In the aftermath, Gleaning For The World was there providing comfort and support to those who needed it most.
Before this tragic event, I had never worked with Gleaning For The World, so of course when they arrived quickly at our church I didn’t know what to expect. I can honestly say they were amazing! They were such a great organization to partner with because they had been in this situation so many times before. They were able to help us in so many ways ranging from advice of how to handle a situation to contacts with new organizations to help and honestly, providing materials and things we wouldn’t have been able to come up with on our own. On top of this, they had a great attitude and were just fun to be around. That was so refreshing in a time that was a tad stressful! I truly appreciate organizations that are willing to go the extra mile to do whatever is needed and that is the heart of Gleaning For The World! - Scotty Haynes • Lead Pastor at Church of the Harvest, Norman, Oklahoma
An F5 tornado tore through Oklahoma in May – changing thousands of lives in a matter of seconds. Stretching over a mile wide, this tornado was categorized at such a level that it produced winds strong enough to move houses off of their foundations, propel automobile size objects over 110 yards and significantly damage steel reinforced structures. The latter is exactly what happened to the Plaza Elementary School where six school children were killed when the building collapsed. As reports of the devastation in Moore were first broadcast, we contacted our partners in the affected areas to arrange immediate shipments of relief supplies. We had both supplies and specially trained staff on the ground within hours to help begin the distribution and recovery process. In total, we sent eleven tractortrailer loads (386,000 pounds) of disaster
relief supplies to this area of the country. The shipments were valued at $304,543. We elected to establish our base of operations out of a church located near the most devastated tract. Water, food, pet supplies, personal care items and storage containers were delivered by hand into the most tornado-ravaged sector of the state. While staff members coordinated supplies in the most impacted region, churches in other less damaged areas requested supplies to assist in their own community outreach. Multiple distribution sites in different areas allowed us to expand our relief work to impact the most people in an efficient and timely manner. Gleaning For The World strives to maintain a quick and flexible disaster response. As a result of this priority, we are often amoung the first on the scene.

DOING A LOAD OF GOOD ACROSS THE USA We drive by them every day – and try our best not to get stuck behind one. However, a fifty-three foot tractor-trailer can efficiently deliver much needed relief to a region devastated by disaster. Well over three hundred boxes and cartons are loaded on each outbound shipment, which includes non-perishable food, water, personal hygiene items, paper products and stuffed animals for the children – the most vulnerable during disasters. SUPERSTORM SANDY SuperStorm Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, caused $68,000,000,000 in damage throughout the east coast. Flooding and high winds left people without power, food and water for days. Gleaning For The World responded immediately to supply aid to our neighbors in the North Atlantic. SuperStorm Sandy, the largest U.S. storm in recent history, impacted twenty-four states along the eastern seaboard in November 2012. As the storm moved out to sea, we were able to locate congregations and relief groups willing to serve as distribution points for our supplies. Just hours after the winds subsided, one group was able to supply over 15,000 meals to beleaguered survivors with our assistance. While the initial impact of the storm was felt in late 2012, and off of the news soon after, we continued sending aid well into 2013; in part, because of tremendous support received from the Central Virginia community as well as other collaborating non-profits. The original assessment concluded that ministry inventory held only enough supplies for five or six tractor-trailer loads to be sent — enough to help between 5,000 and 6,000 people. However, donations received allowed us to send 50 tractor-trailers, raising the number of people receiving aid to 50,000. Pastor Hulla from Coney Island Gospel Assembly, summed up our relief operation in two sentences, “This work salvaged a community. We saw the church and the community come together.” As a standard practice, we voluntarily work closely with state and federal agencies to help maintain the integrity of non-profit distribution and reporting practices. The Attorney General’s Office of New York requested and was provided extensive reports on our Sandy relief efforts. Additional information about any program or response may be obtained by contacting our office.

AID TO MIDDLE EASTERN REFUGEES
Religious strife and constantly changing regimes force many families to flee their homes and find safety in camps with population concentrations more dense than the island of Manhattan in New York City.

Your donation of shoes is truly amazing and we thank God for opening the doors and hearts of those who are making this great gift available to the brokenhearted among the Syrian refugees … for keeping the Syrian refugees at the forefront of those you minister to around the world.
A Missionary Partner to the Middle East
Right now, 2,541,754 people sit in camps waiting for the war to end. Fleeing snipers’ fire, mortar explosions and chemical weapons, refugees fled with nothing but the clothes on their back. Now, forced to live in tent cities, with populations denser than Manhattan, refugees face ever depleting supplies with 5,000 people arriving each day. Irregular water supplies in the camps have been met with bottles of water from Gleaning For The World. Children suffering from burns on their feet from scorching sands get relief from the 42,696 shoes we have sent. As a faith based organization, we use the opportunity to send supplies to show the love of Christ to those in dire need. In this very complex region, Gleaning’s work shares love while also serving as a deterrent to the agenda of global terrorism.
A BAG FULL OF HOPE FOR MISSIONARIES “Words cannot express our appreciation for your donation to our medical mission trip to Haiti. We visited five clinics and cared for over 600 people, all of whom received medical and OB care, vitamins, education for health, clean water and nutritional assistance. We were blessed to help these welcoming, God-loving people who work so hard every day just to survive. Thank you! Kathryn Luth Humphries, MD • The Starfish Project
A missionary is an individual responding to a call to do evangelism, or ministry of service, such as education, healthcare, construction or commerce. They carry the Gospel to hospitals, orphanages, jails, schools and war-ravaged villages, for the purpose of providing physical assistance, comfort and hope. Throughout 2013, Gleaning For The World provided supplies for fifteen missionary trips in twelve countries worldwide: Burundi, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, St. Thomas, Uganda and Zambia. RESPONSE TO THE PHILIPPINES AFTER HAIYAN How local communities participate in the disaster relief collection process
Gleaning For The world learns of a disaster somewhere in the world
Our families, friends and neighbors rallied around the cause — filling hundreds of boxes destined for the Philippines. Volunteers donated hundreds of hours of valuable time packing life-saving supplies to send to the millions left with little or no hope in sight. Our friends and neighbors in Central Virginia reached out with us to relieve the suffering of the Philippine people in the aftermath of Typhon Haiyan. Gleaning was able to respond within hours, providing financial and product support.
of boxes of mixed supplies have been distributed throughout the Philippines by medical workers and missionaries.
As reports of the devastation progressed, volunteers helped us man collection sites at partnering businesses; Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart and Kroger allowed us on premises for several days. Monetary donations poured in from all across the country.
Community collection sites are setup at area big-box stores
Volunteers gathered food, cleaning supplies and basic first aid and over-the-counter medicines; with the funding received, we were able to purchase food and supplies to supplement the product relief effort from the community.
Through generous donations, we were able to sponsor the supplies for eight mobile clinics to provide help to those injured or suffering from illnesses related to the devastation in their communities. We were able to establish an unbroken supply chain from our donors, volunteers and supporters to the nurses, doctors, missionaries and victims of the storm.
The product was packed in special boxes that were sent from our warehouse directly to the hands of relief workers. Hundreds
Donated goods are then sorted and packed into boxes by volunteers

CONNECTING MEDICAL SURPLUS TO NEEDS AROUND
We want to thank you for your fifteen years of generosity and dedication; it serves as a reminder to those struggling to survive — that they are never forgotten. Mark Khouri
Director of Gifts In Kind • Food For The Poor
OUR WORLD Medical Surplus is a key component in our ability to reach and save lives around the world. We take excess goods and pieces that no longer meet AMA standards of sterility and send them to places that can’t afford or access even simple things that we take for granted - including bandages
The Corporate Medical Surplus Program embodies our commitment to improving healthcare throughout the world’s most impoverished communities. During 2013, donations from our medical partners allowed us to send supplies in excess of $21,000,000 to developing nations. These supplies were used to replenish hospitals, support remote health clinics, stock mobile health care units and equip medical mission trips. The impact is significant. Routinely, doctors and nurses in developing countries are forced to reuse gloves, needles and other medical necessities in order to provide basic health care. Many times these items are simply rinsed with water and used on the next patient, thus spreading diseases like HIV and hepatitis. As a result of our work, health care providers now have enough materials so they can dispose of medical supplies between patients. This allows them to treat the sick and injured more effectively. Chronic and communicable diseases in developing countries are a significant problem for individuals and families. As you can imagine, health issues create major repercussions for their social and economic standing in the world. We work with many partners to meet our mission of providing “high quality, life-saving supplies” to many medical programs throughout the world. The quality of life for the indigent will only be improved with access to quality healthcare. We are committed to this effort.
HOW WE REACH AROUND THE WORLD One of the most noteworthy, yet least recognized, economic developments of the last few decades was the transformation of international shipping - the idea of moving tractor-trailer size loads of goods in metal boxes (shipping containers) around the world. This global revolution has sped up international delivery, slashed the cost of transporting goods around the world and greatly expanded the distribution of goods to people everywhere. With these economic improvements, the flow of world trade was forever changed and the avenues for reaching the unreached, the poorest of the poor, were made widely accessible. Gleaning For The World’s primary method for delivering supplies internationally are through shipping containers. With an extensive network of strategic humanitarian aid partners, we were able to provide nearly $28,000,000 of aid – over 2,000,000 pounds through these containers of hope, touching and improving the lives of the impoverished throughout the world.

Letter From Ron Davidson • COO “When I finally took time to meet them and find out their stories, many had just run into horrible circumstances that took away their dreams, causing them to lose all they knew - leaving them on the street. I also learned that I could be where they were if the same series of events had fallen on me.” My life changed sixteen years ago when I came faceto-face with the poor and homeless. I have to admit that, like most of us, I have walked past, around and by the homeless - not wanting to become involved. They were strangers to me and their lifestyle was perplexing. I thought many, if not all of them, were living a life where they were comfortable — almost too comfortable being in that situation. I chose to look past the people being cold, miserable, hungry and often living without hope. In reality, I just lived in denial and avoided even thinking about it. When I finally took time to meet them and find out their stories, many had just fallen into horrible circumstances that resulted in them losing all they had and forcing them into the streets. I also discovered that I could be exactly where they were if the same series of events happened to me. It was eye-opening. What did the homeless and impoverished people in America and around the world need from me? Was it money? My time? Prior to that night, it was just easier and more comfortable for me to walk past them and not get involved. I realized these people had the same dreams for their children that I had. They wanted enough food to adequately feed them and to give them healthy lives with a chance for a better future. Even though I could not change the plight of all those in need, I could stop and give them encouragement. I could let them know that our God cared about what was happening to them. I could offer friendship and a helping hand.
Gleaning For The World has allowed me to do more for the homeless than I would have thought possible. In fact, we have been able to help more hurting people than I could have ever imagined. For example, in 2013 we shipped $32,000,000 in supplies to disaster victims and displaced people in need around the world. The shipments were contained in 185 tractortrailer loads that weighed 4,500,000 pounds. These can appear as just numbers on a page until we realize that those numbers represent individuals, like you and me, who needed encouragement and basic supplies in order to live. What a life-changing thought! Last year alone, we reached 6,000,000 people with some form of assistance. Working primarily through churches as distribution points, we connected individuals to faith-based groups that were prepared to also help people with their spiritual needs during times of crisis. I learned many years ago as a pastor and as a Christian that it is not enough to say to a person in need to “go your way, be happy, warm and well fed,” while doing nothing to actually help them. Faith without works is dead. We are called by God to share His mercy and grace with others. I am so thankful that we have that opportunity every day at Gleaning For The World.

Putting The Miracles in Writing the staff unless God provided a sameday miracle. When I started writing the book, I often reflected on moments like this and would pen how “we were broke.” However, I realized that wasn’t quite right. I revised it to be “there were times when the cash flow was so low.” That still wasn’t quite right. I had to get on my knees and apologize to God! In reality, there was not one single time that God did not provide. Because He has always been sufficient, I wanted other people who were facing tough times to realize that the same God that provides thousands of dollars to keep our doors open is the same God that cares about them and their needs. God has never allowed us to be broke. However, He did allow us to face cash shortages so we would learn to step out in faith and trust Him.
Several years ago, I was encouraged to tell the story of Gleaning For The World in written form. Of all the crazy ideas, they wanted me to write a book about the beginning, the struggle and the miracles. I agreed to work on the book as long as it did two things. First, I wanted God to get the glory. I have been allowed to watch the grace of God at work as He has opened one door after another. I don’t know why I have been given that privilege, but I am so thankful to come to work every day and see what God will do next. Second, I wanted the stories to help people see that God is sufficient and that He has never given up on them. Yes, there were many hard times. For example, there were times of overwhelming concern when I could not pay
So, after two years of focused attention, the book is finished. I titled it, “I did It His Way.” Settling on a name was tough. I had to admit in the title that I tried doing it my way and I always failed. When I learned to trust God and do the work His way, He always provided. We have made the book available to everyone, either electronically or in print. I want everyone to read the story, give God the praise and learn that if God can use an attention deficit, redneck preacher to start an international ministry, God can use you to do more than you can imagine. The book is available at www.gftw.org
celebrating our 15th birthday Almost a year ago, I was asked what I wanted Gleaning For The World to accomplish in the next five to ten years. While I thought of it often, I had never put it in writing. Over the next few months, I put together a ten year plan that would allow us to reach more hurting people than ever before. In October 2013, as we celebrated our fifteenth anniversary with some dear friends, I unveiled a three-year Capital Campaign which would allow us to expand our warehouses, staff and equipment for the purpose of doubling the number of people we reach every year. In 2013, we reached 6,000,000 people with some form of care. We provided supplies to every major disaster in the world, shared supplies with ministries reaching the poor globally and changed the conditions for many who were suffering. We were the first on site at many disasters, and offered hope in many defeated lives. While I am thankful for these opportunities, I am also keenly aware that the need is so much greater. We want to double the volume of supplies, allowing us to change more lives. We want to bless more people and give them a reason to believe in a God of love. Basically, we want to take Gleaning For The World to a new level. So, we have embarked on a journey that will take a miracle to achieve and I want you to be a part of this cause. We are going to double the supplies, add to the buildings and still operate with the quality and efficiency that makes Gleaning For The World unique. As we did fifteen years ago, we are stepping out in faith and trusting God with His work. Join us for the adventure!
OUR MISSION AT GLEANING To share the love of God at home and around the world through the efficient delivery of high quality, life-saving supplies to victims of poverty and devastation by connecting corporate surplus to critical needs.
