YACHTING WELCOME
Dear Reader, elcome to the world of yachting, and more specifically, welcome to the extraordinary world of charter – one of the best-kept secrets of luxury living, where every day is a new adventure. That’s the beauty of charter: you’re the master. There’s none of the packing or transfer stress that comes with land travel. Just sheer pleasure. Simply plan your holiday with those closest to you and create your own private paradise. We’re extremely excited to publish our first edition dedicated to yacht charter in GG Magazine. We hope to indulge you in the idea of luxury charter, inspiring you with the very finest vessels and a host of industry secrets. We’ll be exploring sustainability in the world of luxury yachting, in addition to exquisite commodities and a 360° overview of charter. Allow us to introduce you to Moonbird, an undeniably elegant sailing yacht for charter with a long history of racing – and winning! We also bring you two insightful interviews – the first on culinary finery, as Kirsty Stanley-Hughes shares her secrets of hiring the world’s best Michelin-starred chefs and sommeliers for yacht charters. Followed by insights from one of the industry’s most respected captains, Carl Sputh. You’re unique and so are the exotic locations to visit and yachts to charter. The perfect itinerary is one tailored entirely to your desires and tastes. As we’re based on the world-famous Côte d’Azur, it made sense to share a detailed itinerary that could be your next vacation. It’s an extremely exciting time for us at Engel & Völkers Yachting. more than ever, the possibilities for superlative dining on board are really tantalising. For those with a taste for world-renowned cuisine, charterers can hire chefs from some of the world’s best restaurants to prepare the meal of their dreams on board. Kirsty Stanley-Hughes is the world’s only agent exclusively representing Michelin-star chefs. After a career managing fine food and wine events for Möet Hennessy UK, she set up in 2010 facilitating exclusive dining experiences for private clients. She explains: “We specialise in matching exciting and well-recognised chefs with private groups, whether it be on an estate ashore, or a yacht at sea. Clients love having a renowned chef chatting with and entertaining their guests. It’s not just about the food.” Stanley-Hughes says in her experience, crew love the unique opportunity to work alongside these Michelin-starred maestros. She has reviewed the onboard kitchens and facilities of many of the leading charter yachts and knows the tools her chefs will have to hand. She also has a list of suppliers who cater to some of the leading restaurants in the Riviera to make sure these maestros of cuisine have all the ingredients they need. Stanley-Hughes can have Jason Atherton of Pollen Street Social or any of her roster of star chefs tapping the yacht’s dinner bell on Friday when a request is placed on Tuesday. She will build a picture of the client’s tastes and arrange for travel and provisions to arrive aboard for the event. And with a yacht’s impeccable service staff and stunning setting, it’s an utterly unique experience. “Tasting Eric Chavot’s incredible French interpretations while at anchor off Cap Ferrat or applying Sky Gygnell’s inventiveness to Sicilian ingredients is a treat to remember forever. You can take a chef out of their Michelin-starred kitchen, but you can’t take the Michelin-star quality out of them.”

YACHTING ADVICE
Taking the Villa With You Yachting holidays are defined by quality personalised service delivered by expert crew. Then there’s the stunning experience of discovering new places by sea from the comfort of a vessel designed to provide all the comforts of home. Captain Carl Sputh explains. hat’s the first benefit people discover when enjoying a yacht?
On a yachting holiday, there’s no need to get in a car and travel, unpack and repack each time you move. With a yacht, you arrive aboard, unpack, and the world comes to you. Instead of beating traffic to the restaurant, you arrive on your private tender which delivers you to the seaside table in a style that puts limousines to shame. What tips do you have when searching for the ideal yacht for a particular charter group, whether for a group of friends or a mul-

ti-generational family?
Yachts and their amazing crews are dynamic, flexible, and guest-oriented, providing them the opportunity to switch off from work and let a highly talented and dedicated team deliver a holiday totally focused on the guests’ desires. Crew are able to switch from adventurous water sports and nightlife to fine dining, museums and cultural immersion for each and every guest we serve. When browsing yachts on offer, showing pictures to your friends and family and imagining yourself on the top deck or the cabins is key. But also, remember that the yacht doesn’t provide the memories; the crew does. My tip is: find out how long crew have been on board, if the broker has references from other trips or if they know the captain. Finding a good crew is the key to a successful charter. Yachts are remarkable vessels. What are some of the advantages guests benefit from? By far the most amazing pieces of technology are the stabilisers, which have dramatically dampened the effects of motion. The systems we have today nearly eliminate the rolling both when sailing and at anchor, which has opened up the experience to people who otherwise might not consider yachting. Then the incredible
volume of high-quality meteorological data we have means I can plan a week’s itinerary ahead of time with confidence about what the weather will do. And, of course, we have all the entertainment and communication comforts of home that our guests are used to. In your experience, what do first-time charterers find most surprising about yachting?
It is the quality of service. A good crew will take over and you won’t even realise. Clients are used to running their companies and controlling their surroundings. On a yacht charter, they still have every option to control what happens, but soon realize they don’t need to worry about these details.
