Natural Born Fighter

Perseverance, consistency and speed win match points and a seat among the world’s absolute best. All eyes are on Maria Sakkari, who not only wants more, but also knows she absolutely deserves it. TEXT: Doya Karolini

Maria Sakkari, captured by the Prague-based Radka Leitmeritz, as part of an homage to women’s tennis and players who have dominated the sport. Greece has yet to produce a World No.1, but this young woman’s iron will and unbreakable spirit are committed to writing a new chapter in tennis history.

PHOTOS: RADKA LEITMERITZ – MARIA SAKKARI WAS SHOT AS PART OF THE COURT SUPREMES PROJECT, PRESENTED BY PORSCHE, WWW.PORSCHE-TENNIS.COM/COURTSUPREMES

Bit by bit, she steadily rose up the rankings and established herself at the top of the game – without the guidance, expertise or financial heft of a federation. Her serve is definitely her defining weapon and “never, ever give up” is what fuels her game. “Tennis, clearly, shaped me, made me what I am today. I was born a fighter, it is natural for me to fight with all my strength. And I believe that it is my militancy that adds that something more whenever I fight.” Resilient and consistent, always happy and easy going, it’s probably no coincidence that she shares the same code of ethics with her all-time favourite athlete, the guy who lead the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA Championship since 1971 and was named Finals MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo – both were born in Athens, just six months apart. She can’t remember exactly when she started dreaming of becoming a world-class player, but it was her mother who inspired her (Angeliki Kanellopoulou, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 43 back in 1987). “She has been the biggest influence in my life.” Her favorite colour is grey and her favourite material is carbon – no surprises here, considering that atoms of carbon can bond together in diverse ways, resulting sometimes in graphite (from the Greek verb “γράφειν” which means “to write”) or diamonds. After all, this fighter is writing her own chapter in

tennis history, peeling off layers with every match point won, revealing true strength. “When you love what you do, you love all aspects of it, including the exhausting practices and the long-haul travel. It is this feeling that drives you towards achieving your goals every single day.” She deals with stress, fatigue and adrenaline on a daily basis, with any deviation from her schedule – at this level – being ruled out. “What relaxes me is a long drive along the coastline of Athens, early in the morning or during sunset, usually listening to The Weeknd, in my car,” she says. It should not come as a surprise that in her ongoing effort to conquer the tennis world she became an ambassador for the brand Porsche, a notorious lover of the sport, bound by tradition (sponsoring the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix ever since 1978). And she can still remember the first time she ever sat behind the wheel of one. “It was a unique moment – it took me ten seconds to realize that driving a Porsche is a completely different experience. They are powerful and immensely elegant, a complete driver’s delight.” But if she were one, which model would it be? She laughs. “A 911 GT2 RS,” she adds. Definitely the kind of velocity that you would expect. But, does she remember the game that perhaps changed her forever? “It wasn’t one specific match, but rather a tournament, the 2016 Australian Open. I was not really

7

confident, didn’t think I was good enough to compete with the best in the world. Then I won three matches in the qualifying and went into the main draw. After one more round, I lost in three sets to Carla Suarez Navarro, who was seeded high. It was a good match and a turning point. It was right then and there that I finally felt like I belonged with the big girls.” It is a universal truth that fear and pain are life’s greatest teachers. We all want to win. But it’s how a player overcomes defeat that may reveal true greatness. “It’s never easy and you can never get used to losing. If you do get used to it, you have a serious problem. So you try to keep your cool, when you lose a match and to keep both your feet on the ground when you win. That balance is immensely important.” Oscar Wilde believed that regrets, just like mistakes, make a gentleman. The same goes for a gentlewoman. “It might sound like a cliché, or even impossible, but I really don’t have a single regret. I don’t look at life that way. Throughout my journey, I have tried to do what I felt was best at any given moment. Did I make mistakes? Many! And I will certainly make more in the future. But I learn quickly and become a better version of myself every single day – not only on tennis courts. How could I have any regrets, when everything I did has led me to this point in time, right here, right now?”

Vasiliki Basia, the restless woman with the vision to change the culinary maps and to play with both our taste buds and senses, has warmly welcomed us at the premises of FILIOS in Baden-Baden.

An Ode to Pleasure

More than two thousand kilometres away from the windy islands, VASILIKI BASIA, the woman with the vision behind FILIOS, reintroduced us to what Greek cuisine is actually born out of by rediscovering its true virtues. She was born and raised in Germany, with a great love for the region of Kozani, the birthplace of both her parents. It is a beautiful landscape with genuinely warm-hearted people. Which is the inherited reason why, just like with that familiar breeze that surrounds one once out in nature, Vasiliki Basia has always associated the scents of fennel, thyme, oregano, rosemary, basil, mint and saffron with Greece. Her absolutely favourite dish is the pastitsada served at “Filios”, probably the most characteristic dish of Corfu’s unique cuisine. “Our second home, our summer sanctuary really, is on Corfu island. But my husband and I have been travelling non-stop around Greece for the last two decades, with a seemingly unquenchable thirst for testing waters and flavours. And I must humbly admit that I’m as fascinated by the endless blue of the Aegean as by the emerald green of the Ionian Sea. – and everything they give birth to. And, at the same time, I love the beauty, roughness and quietness of Zagori, although I can’t get enough of Athens, this incredibly vibrant and loud metropolis.” An avid lover of all things fashion and design, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Vasiliki Basia has dedicated a pop-up corner, at the main entrance of FILIOS, to offering a selection of her favourite brand’s – Zeus+Dione – designs. “With a rich heritage rooted in mythology and symbolism, they revive and redefine the local craft of artisans and craftsmen from every corner of Greece, offering exceptional Doric pieces that are both innovative and timeless, creating a new lifestyle based on precious silk and tradition.” Admittedly, Greek cuisine, as presented throughout the globe, is completely misunderstood. By allowing her guests to rediscover its true virtues, she was sure, this largely unknown, culinary treasure would receive the appreciation it has always deserved, as

9

well as passionate fans. Fascinated by the creativity of modern Greek cuisine and centuries-old tradition, and eager to promote the latest trends shaking down Athens and Thessaloniki, Basia opted to work with Thiva-born-and-raised Gikas Xenakis, a chef known for his distinctive and exceptionally creative style and the hefty culinary heritage in his suitcase. “From the very beginning – and the official opening night of FILIOS last October, in the presence of His Eminence, Metropolitan Maximus of Ioannina and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Nikos Dendias – it was clear that this had to be an almost sacred space to dive deep into every aspect of the country my family comes from. To truly experience the warmth of philoxenia, the art of Greek hospitality, with friends and family gathering around the table to share a meal, made with love.” A philosophy Basia is completely devoted to, of offering authentic and fresh modern Greek food and exquisite fine wine labels, to be enjoyed within an elegant space of unique architecture (developed in a joint venture with Ria Vogiatzi of Athens-based Elastic Architects), under the magic of specially curated Greek music (DJ Constantin Nasiri). Only not on a remote island, but in Baden-Baden, the 19th century “summer capital of Europe” – a splendour that continues to this day and has been conferred UNESCO World Heritage status. “I like to think of FILIOS as an ever-evolving living organism – this large living room filled with the alluring simplicity and warm complexity of the Greek soul, where we can wholeheartedly welcome our friends.” Proof that Vasiliki Basia has always adhered to the values she learned as a child: that Greek cuisine is ultimately born out of respect for nature and pure love for all fellow human beings. As simple and as excitingly complex as that.

Walking in her shoes

Elvira Panagiotopoulou’s designs evoke a dynamic feminine presence. Her refined shoes add a contemporary twist of coolness that aspires to ignite the divine power that every woman carries within. compromising houses of Azzedine Alaïa and Dior (who sculpted and celebrated the female form), as well as her love for the crucial work of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Her favourite materials to work with and transform are leather and raffia, and she loves black – the absence or complete absorption of visible light – for its sensuality. When asked to describe herself in only three words she laughs. “Perfectionist, romantic, organised.” To her, the most stylish woman to have ever walked on earth was Grace Kelly, a timeless icon. Just like the woman who wears her designs, she was indeed effortlessly elegant, both classy and modern. “My brand’s DNA has geometric details and graphic patterns written all over it. Inspiration can come from a painting or a sculpture, from every form of art in general, but also from travel. Everything that attracts my attention can be a key factor that elicits a sense of desire. That’s the magic word. Desire.” Her designs are brought to life in Florence and Athens, by carefully selected craftsmen carrying a long heritage of artistry selecting the highest quality materials. Nowadays, luxury is often seen as a form of social capital that helps set one apart and achieve personal and social goals. In that sense, what it actually stands for often gets misinterpreted. She firmly believes that a luxuriously made, highly sophisticated pair of shoes helps one move elegantly through space and time, and even feel different, rather than just conform to common social norms. What constitutes luxury when it comes to designing footwear, she is sure. “It’s not only a question of choosing uniquely qualitative materials, in order to have a shoe absolutely stand out. It’s the extraordinary craftsmanship behind each creation that makes all the difference. The care for each detail. Which is exactly why it takes so much time for a sketch to come to life.”

TEXT: DOYA KAROLINI

Born in Athens and raised in Paris, Elvira Panagiotopoulou, a vibrant personality, grew up with an array of stimuli combining the nature and heritage of both cultures. The dynamic, elegant and creative women that surrounded her have clearly fostered her sense of aesthetics and love for craftsmanship. Always enchanted by shoes, ever since she was a curious teenager, enthralled by the creative process, she proceeded to take a Footwear Design course at the London College of Fashion. After this she decided to hone her skills and move to San Mauro Pascoli, the famous luxury shoe district in Italy, to study Footwear Design at Cercal School. She then went on to gain an M.A. in Fashion Accessories at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan. Upon completing her studies in 2008, she started working in Paris and Milan with some of the most prestigious luxury footwear and fashion brands, including Bruno Frisoni, Diego Dolcini, Narciso Rodriguez, Madeleine Vionnet, Dolce & Gabbana, and Balmain. In February 2018, she won a Vogue Talents Award for “The Future Footwear Generation”, a contest held by René Caovilla and Vogue Italia. For the last five years she has been working on her very own luxury footwear brand DI GAÏA. Forever excitable, she also accepted a new role, as Creative Director of CALLISTA CRAFTS two years ago, as well as that of shoe designer consultant for Virgil Abloh’s OFF_WHITE since February 2022. Handcrafted by skilled artisans in Florence and Athens, Elvira’s detail-oriented, refined creations combine exceptional quality with a sophisticated and timeless design and a contemporary touch. “I design for strong, fearless women. I want my designs to appeal emotionally to women, and empower them at the same time. Shoes have to seduce both men and the women wearing them.” She cannot hide her eternal respect and admiration for the un-
