The topic of health has always played a big role for me and my family, and so naturally, sport is an essential part of our daily lives. I personally try to ride one of my polo horses every morning before I head for the office at our Hamburg headquarters. Although I am no longer quite as active in international competitive polo and participate in fewer tournaments, I still enjoy playing as often as possible with friends at my finca on Mallorca, where my polo field also offers wonderful views of the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is truly exceptional and I consider myself to be very privileged. My daughter shares my passion for animals and is an avid rider. I regularly play tennis with my son, both in Hamburg and Mallorca, and we all enjoy water sports when we’re on vacation – especially snorkeling and diving in the sea. My wife has set up her own gym in the basement of our home, which she uses regularly. By the way, here is an interesting fact: Investing in an exercise room can increase the value of your property significantly. Since the pandemic, many people are increasingly appreciating the time spent in their homes, and a private wellness area has become an attractive buying argument. This is also emphasized in the report “The Global Wellness Economy: Looking Beyond COVID” published in December 2022 by the Global Wellness Institute in Miami. The GWI valued the global wellness real estate sector at $275 billion in 2020 – in 2017, the figure was only $148 billion. This growth trend is expected to continue. Experts predict that wellness elements and healthy design will become almost ubiquitous in the luxury sector and also be found in mid-market and affordable properties in the future. Especially in the commercial and office property sector, healthy building features could increasingly become an expectation or even a minimum standard, rather than just “nice to have.” In this “Feel Good Issue,” you will find many facets of the topic of health and fitness and inspiring ideas that can arise from it. Living longer and healthier, a sharp mind in a fit body, forever young, so to speak – never before has so much research and investment been made in this sector as today. Just a 30 minute-drive from the Italian border and Nice Airport, and less than an hour from Provence in the south of France, the Principality of Monaco lies at the very heart of Europe. The royal Grimaldi family has ruled here since the 13th century and the present head of state, Prince Albert II, has reigned since 2005.
The tiny state on the Côte d’Azur is the second smallest country in the world – after Vatican City. It covers an area of just two square kilometers and has a population of around 39,000. Flanked by high mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, Monaco enjoys a Mediterranean climate, warm summers and an exclusive flair that acts as a magnet for international visitors. Those wishing to arrive in style, travel by boat from Italy or France.
Monaco is one of the world’s wealthiest microstates and a tax paradise where residents pay no income tax. Not surprisingly, the number of millionaires living here is high. According to a recent estimate by the Knight Frank consulting group, the mini-state is home to more than 27,000 people whose wealth exceeds one million dollars. That is two-thirds of the population.
Monte-Carlo is the largest of the principality’s nine administrative districts and its undisputed landmark is the magnificent Casino – a gambling institution. In the Belle Époque building, which has served as a location for a number of James Bond films, experienced as well as novice gamblers wait for lady luck to favor them until “rien ne va plus” (no more bets).
On April 1, 1863, French financier François Blanc took over the casino and established the Société des Bains de Mer. His idea was to transform an arid plot of land previously used to cultivate olive and citrus trees into an exclusive gambling and luxury destination.
The concept proved successful and the international elite flocked to Monte Carlo to celebrate the art de vivre in grand style.
Since that time, the Société has established itself as Monaco’s leading player in five-star tourism, bringing together prestigious hotels such as the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo and the Hôtel Hermitage as well as 30 restaurants, four of which share a total of seven Michelin stars.
It was in the legendary Brasserie Café de Paris on the central Place du Casino that, so the story goes, the fl ambéed crêpe suzette was originally invented. A chef was preparing crêpes with liqueur for the future Edward VII of England when the contents of the pan suddenly burst into flames.
The Monte Carlo Beach Hotel, a summer retreat dating back to the 1930s, has been reopened in refurbished splendor after a renovation carried out under the direction of interior designer India Mahdavi. Tucked away among the pine groves, the fun-loving establishment enjoys a prime location on the Riviera seafront. In its Elsa gourmet restaurant, chef Mélanie Serre serves up seasonal dishes made from organic ingredients and wild-caught fish. The hotel boasts an Olympic-sized seawater pool and a private beach, where the Maona Monte-Carlo open-air summer cabaret opens at the end of June

“I’m there for you whenever you need me!,” says the little yellow robot with the saucer-shaped eyes and pulsating heart, waving from your smartphone screen. Woebot is a chatbot developed to help people cope with feelings of depression and anxiety. It checks in with you every day to ask you how you are, helps to correct negative beliefs and functions as a mental health ally.
Woebot is based on the scientifically sound premises that underly cognitive behavioral therapy. The bot tracks your mood and suggests concrete exercises and strategies for dealing with negative thoughts. If you’re stressed, the center of the robot changes and deep breathing instructions come up on the screen. The purpose of Woebot is not to replace a professional psychologist or classical therapy but to provide empathy and help to bridge waiting times. It’s intended as a self-help tool that can be easily accessed when you’re stressed or plagued by unwanted thoughts – any time of the day or night.

Hertman builds home and wellness resort interiors. He reveals the requirements for creating an atmosphere of wellbeing.
What is your definition of healthy living?
In my opinion, a good interior is like nature itself. The design should be so simple in shape and form that it gives you a sense of tranquility and makes you feel rested. It should never be overdone – the materials are important. The eye wants to see texture and the hands want to feel it. I like to work with Portuguese tiles that have been glazed and painted by hand, for instance. They’re not perfect, but that’s what brings soul to an interior.
The first wellness resort you did was for the Fort Resort Beemster near Amsterdam. What would you say characterizes a good spa?
The resort is located in a more than 100-year-old fort – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We wanted to incorporate the beauty of the rough structure into our design and so we combined the raw concrete with very fine stone and dim lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. We also used lots of wood to keep people from feeling lost in the large space and provide a sense of homeyness. Spas are about letting go, about simplicity. Where do I go to relax, where do I go to shower – this shouldn’t require a big sign, it should be recognizable from the design.
How do you personally regenerate?
I’m a big spa fan myself. At home, I use a steam cabin at least four times a week. After taking a cold shower, I feel fresh and ready to start the day with a clear mind. It’s also a great way to relieve stress.
What can we do to create moments of wellness in our own home?
Create space for rituals, particularly in areas that are intensely lived in. A tray in the kitchen, for instance, invitingly set out with tea leaves and a teapot. Or a shelf in the bathroom with a beautiful stone, flowers and a carafe of water. Avoid symmetry, play with color. Even details like super-soft towels or a pair of stylish slippers can make a big difference.

Worldwide expansion – a winning strategy
Around the globe, real estate brokers are valued for their expertise, experience and extensive knowledge of the market. In economically challenging times, properties remain a solid investment and the demand continues to be strong. Our company is continuing its dynamic, international expansion to meet this demand.
Whether as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic or the war in Ukraine, critical factors such as the energy crisis, raw material shortages, rising inflation and mortgage rate hikes are affecting the economy and people’s willingness to spend and invest money. Nevertheless, Engel & Völkers was happy to be able to report a brokerage revenue of €1.2 billion for the financial year 2022.
Cautious behavior notwithstanding, real estate remains an anchor of stability, an asset regarded as something of a safe haven. Particularly those countries with a large international buyer base such as Spain, Portugal or Greece are defying the crises and even in these trying times, are exploiting their potential to the full. Investing in real estate in fast-growth regions such as these is always worthwhile for our clients. From a business standpoint, expanding our network in those same locations makes a lot of sense too. Only a truly global and continuously expanding network of real estates experts will ensure that our customers always receive the best service possible.
We are currently active in over 1,000 locations. In each of these, our clients benefit from our knowledge of the local market, an exclusive client database and our international network, with which we work together closely. In addition to our long-standing and successful franchise system of license partners, we also benefit from our market center concept. Market centers cover a larger geographic area and help us grow more quickly in important real estate locations.
In Greece, for instance, demand from international buyers is continuing unabated, making our expansion there indispensable.
Our market center in Athens, which opened in 2109, has been very successful ever since. We opened a second market center in the Thessaloniki metropolitan region in late 2022. Since then, we have been demonstrat ing our expertise in northern Greece and offering clients a larger area in which to take advantage of our services.
Greece is one of Europe’s most popular vacation destinations and is high on the list, particularly for international buyers. Demand for first and second residences – both homes and rental properties – is just as strong as ever and shows no signs of letting up. This is now also reflected in the prices, but Greece is still relatively inexpensive compared to its European neighbors.
Regardless of its location, however, each new shop adds to our success, to the recognizability of our brand and to the satisfaction of our customers. As of the beginning of this year, Engel & Völkers is represented in one of Latin America’s most popular and most progressive countries: Costa Rica.
Pura vida! This positive outlook on life is currently attracting more and more internationals to the fascinatingly diverse country. We now have residential property shops in Playa Hermosa Papagayo and Tamarindo. In addition to prospective buyers from Canada and the U.S., people from France, Germany, U.K., Australia and Israel are also looking to profit from Costa Rica’s untouched nature, mild climate and lively cities. We offer real estate services along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, all the way from Santa Cruz to Santa Teresa. In 2023, we intend to continue our expansion strategy by training and further training our real estate agents. After all, as potential buyers have expressed worldwide, what they wish for most is professional, expert advice.

Climate-friendly or green building is high on many people’s list according to a study commissioned by Engel & Völkers Finance. In Germany, high energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy in newbuilds is now being supported by the state with low-interest government loans. In 1996, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor created a subterranean cathedral of wellbeing: the Therme Vals spa in Graubünden (Grisons). Clad in 60,000 slabs of gray-green Vals quartzite, the minimalist building was heritage-listed just two years later and established the now 80-year-old as a pioneer of modern wellness architecture with a spiritual quality. The combination of bare skin on warm stones, darkness and light, steam and the sounds of water is still spellbinding – Zumthor factored all the senses into his design. The shy Pritzker laureate, who doesn’t have a website to this day, has a mythic reputation: “A monk of materials, with standards so exacting that few clients have the patience, or deep enough pockets, to indulge his uncompromising approach,” The Guardian once wrote.

Whether we’re feeling good or bad, every perception begins in the mind. So what if we rewire our brain and learn to evaluate things differently? That’s what Michael Pollan advocates in his bestseller “How to Change Your Mind,” the basis for the Netflix documentary of the same name. But it’s the long subtitle that packs a punch: “What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression and Transcendence.” It’s about LSD, mushrooms, ayahuasca and other substances that have hitherto been criminalized as narcotics and which various neuroscientists and therapists are currently working to rehabilitate. It’s the breaking of a taboo. Trailblazers in Silicon Valley are said to have been enhancing their performance and ego with psychedelic microdosing for years – illegally. In the Netherlands, the “trip retreats” that are popping up like mushrooms are entirely legal. “Some scientists are convinced psychedelics could revolutionize mental healthcare and our understanding of the mind,” says Pollan. And having tested them on himself, so is he.

When the former First Lady of the United States was advertising her book “Becoming” in 2018, she set off a bombshell: Michelle Obama was one of the first VIPs to talk openly about the agonies of infertility, miscarriages and the fact that her daughters Malia and Sasha were conceived through in vitro fertilization – and gave millions of women the courage to overcome their shame. “It’s the worst thing we do to each other as women: Not share the truth about our bodies and how they work and how they don’t work,” said Obama in a nationally aired TV interview. Angelina Jolie had already broken the taboo about what goes on inside the female body back in 2013 when, at the age of 37, fear of cancer prompted her to have her breasts removed after discovering she carried a genetic mutation, and two years later, her ovaries. Her decision triggered a global “Angelina Effect” – a major increase in demand for genetic testing.

Beauty and enchantment have the power to heal. So does music. Harbin Opera House (photo) in northeast China is a symbol of that. Its designer, Chinese architect Ma Yansong, aims to push boundaries: Together with his practice MAD Architects, he wants to make cities more sensual and more human. Born in 1975, architecture’s new star began his career working for his mentor Zaha Hadid, the first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Prize, and is in the process of completing various major projects like museums in Los Angeles and Rotterdam and residential complexes in Rome and Denver. In his native China too, his futuristic and organic designs provide a counterpoint to the race to erect new, high-rise megacities. Rather than skyscrapers that look like silos, he creates buildings that imitate the forms of nature: clouds, mountains or waves. “We need spaces where people can relax by immersing themselves in a different dimension of space and time. In a more spiritual world,” he recently commented on the completion of the crater-shaped Quzhou Sports Park, the largest earth-sheltered complex in the world.

The 2019 exhibition “We, the Trees” at Fondation Cartier in Paris showcased the lesser known facets of these living organisms – because trees don’t just photosynthesize, they feel, remember and communicate as well. Two specimens in front of the Jean Nouvel building were fitted with sensors and provided information about their condition at any given moment on a screen to visualize how directly trees react to carbon dioxide, light, humidity and temperature, even to touch. The reverse is also true: Trees have a very noticeable effect on us humans too. The Shinrin-yoku trend originates from Japan and involves the meditative practice of experiencing the forest air with all the senses: smelling bark, stroking leaves, feeling moss. This very concrete natural therapy is said to boost the immune system and has been proven to reduce the body’s levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as lowering the heart rate and blood pressure. Scientists in Japan have been investigating this phenomenon for many years, and the West is catching up: Guided forest bathing is available across Europe and the U.S.

The unalienable right to “the pursuit of happiness” affirmed in the U.S. Declaration of Independence is an important part of Americans’ DNA. Since 1988, the nation’s most famous motivation coach has built a business empire around it: How can I be happier, healthier, and above all more successful? Tony Robbins has reached 50 million people in 195 countries with his books, training programs and tearful stage seminars, which are celebrated like rock concerts and can cost as much as €8,000. Today the “CEO whisperer,” whose coaching clients have included Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev and Princess Diana, also sells vitamin and metabolic pills, apps and credit cards. Although by his own account his companies’ sales total more than $7 billion a year, the morning “priming” routine he propagates doesn’t cost a penny: It consists of meditation combined with breathing exercises and positive thoughts. His own mantra was once “I’m unstoppable,” he reveals in the documentary “I Am Not Your Guru.”

At 50, Paltrow is showing once again that she has a good nose for business: As the new menopause muse, she speaks openly about hot flashes and hormonerelated mood swings and offers remedies such as the Madame Ovary vitamin mix. The New York Times recently diagnosed a menopause gold rush: The market, it reports, is being swamped with beauty products and telemedicine startups dedicated to this stage of life – and the number of prominent women talking about it is growing. “There’s the potential not only for a big cultural shift to happen, but for some number of people to profit off it.”

This Stockholm startup wants to revolutionize healthcare – by means of artificial intelligence and an innovative full-body scan. Spotify founder Daniel Ek (front) and CEO Hjalmar Nilsonne have overseen the development of a device that can collect and evaluate more than 50 million data points relating to the skin, heart, blood vessels, breathing or inflammations in just a few minutes. The aim is to relieve the pressure on doctors and detect disease early on. “In Sweden healthcare costs have increased 50% faster than GDP since the year 2000, and in 28 of 32 European countries the increase has been even faster. This has resulted in an unreasonable burden on medical staff to do more, and fewer resources than ever,” writes Nilsonne on LinkedIn. The Neko Body Scan costs approx. €180 and all appointments were booked out immediately. The online waiting list is long.

Healing with art: The mission of U.S. nonprofit organization RxART is to help children get well through the power of visual art. It commissions contemporary artists to transform children’s hospitals into more imaginative, colorful and positive places of healing with projects like the “Trees for Children” mural by Nicolas Party at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (pictured). It’s a win-win initiative for everybody involved: The hospitals don’t have to pay anything, the artists receive an honorarium and visibility, and the little patients no longer have to stare at bare walls. New York gallery owner Diane Brown founded RxART in the firm belief that art has the ability to transform both its surroundings and its viewers. More than 58 projects have already been completed and had reached more than 3.3 million young patients as of 2022.

Magic rings that confer special powers or wisdom have long been part of the fantasy universe. This one uses infrared and LED sensors to measure body metrics and displays personal data about the wearer’s sleep quality, calorie consumption, energy levels or menstrual cycle in the accompanying app. Invented in Finland in 2013, the Oura wellness ring aims to help users improve their sleep and health and understand their body better. It’s a magic business: Last year Oura announced that it had sold over a million rings and had raised new investor capital totaling $2.55 billion. Prices for the ring start at €314, plus €5.99 a month for the app. The limited Gucci version (price: €950) was sold out in next to no time.

“Don’t Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight!” is the title of the book the nutritionist published in 2009. It remains the best-selling diet book in India to this day. Rujuta Diwekar has 3.6 million followers on social media. Obesity is increasingly becoming a problem on the subcontinent too, at least in the social classes she works for. Her clients include Bollywood stars and business tycoons. The one-year weight-loss consultation program costs $21,500, with two 30-minute audiences per month. Her approach, which has its roots in ayurvedic teachings, is as simple as it is patriotic: Just eat like your grandparents. Don’t count calories. “Our traditional, collective food wisdom is priceless, but our outlook towards Indigenous foods and customs is skewed because of social media and the influence of big marketing budgets of the food industry,” she says.

From afar, you could easily think she’s shallow: U.S. child star, singer, actress, makeup entrepreneur and former girlfriend of Justin Bieber and The Weeknd. Up close in the Apple TV documentary “My Mind & Me,” however, she reveals her mental anguish without the benefits of Photoshop and spotlights: How she’s so plagued by depression that she can’t get out of bed, how she cries through the chemotherapy sessions she needs because she suffers from the autoimmune disease Lupus. Rare, raw images that she almost didn’t approve for release: “It’s kind of like I’m sacrificing myself a little bit for a greater purpose,” she told Rolling Stone. She hopes the film will help raise global awareness of what it’s like to have mental and physical health issues. At the American Music Awards, Gomez said in a speech: “I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what’s in your hearts.” And her new authenticity is striking a chord: Gomez now has 411 million followers and has even overtaken Kim Kardashian.

His Blueprint project could be the script for a movie, a mix of “Benjamin Button” and “American Psycho”: Every year the tech entrepreneur invests $2 million to get younger, and subjects himself to a hellish daily routine involving 100 different things. As well as eating a vegan diet and various other measures, Bryan Johnson takes a multitude of pills and substances: lycopene for the arteries, metformin for the gut, lithium for the brain. Plus melatonin, hyaluronic acid, amino acids, testosterone plasters. A team of 30 doctors monitors him daily at his house in Santa Monica. The 45-year-old, who sold his online payment system Braintree to PayPal for $800 million, claims to have reversed his epigenetic age by 5.1 years in seven months. “No matter how eccentric people perceive me to be, demonstrating that age can be arrested would change everything,” he says on YouTube.

The evening light is bathing the Salzkammergut Mountains in breathtaking shades of sunset colors like orange and red. I am standing on my balcony and taking in this beautiful view and the fresh air after having just arrived in my room at the Mayrlife Health Resort Altaussee.
As I am already super late for dinner, I pull myself away from this stunning moment and hurry down to the ground floor. The restaurant seems to have emptied out – as most guests take their last meal of the day already around 5:30 p.m. After a warm welcome from the serving staff, a pot of hot vegetable broth is placed in front of me. It’s accompanied by a tiny teaspoon that I’m supposed to use to make me eat more slowly. Along with the broth I’m allowed to choose what’s known here as a chewing trainer: I pick a spelt or buckwheat roll.
Welcome to the F. X. Mayr cure! In a nutshell, it means eating hardly anything at all in the evening, chewing every mouthful at least
40 times and consuming only ultralight food to relieve the gut. The theory here is that our gut is not only our most important digestion organ but an important control center that’s considered to be our second brain; it’s also our biggest internal organ and influences our entire immune system and metabolism. When the gut is healthy, the organism is in good condition too. And when we’re ill, the reason can often be found in the gut. At Mayrlife, this cure is personally adjusted to every single guest’s requirements, regardless of which health programs they’ve signed up for.
Once I’ve patiently spooned up the incredibly delicious broth, I’m advised to turn in early. Timing is one of the secrets to the success of a stay here, which is why the clocks tick to a different rhythm. The timetable is strict and the day starts early so as to optimize digestion and ensure the cure will have the promised effect. For me, as for other guests, getting up at 6 a.m. will be a new regimen for the next few days. Going to bed early and getting some good sleep before midnight is one of the challenges I hope my stay here will help me achieve. Like other guests here, my sleep hygiene needs some tender loving care and will support my goal of fully recharging my batteries.

My immune system is still affected by a recent Covid infection, which was followed a few months later by a nasty bout of the flu. I brief my new doctor on my recent health history at seven o’clock sharp the next morning. It doesn’t take her long to decide which treatment is the best for me: “Our post-Covid program is one of the most popular right now, along with the classic weight loss regime,” explains the well-toned and convivial Dr. Iris Maislinger cheerfully.
It was still dark when I drank my first obligatory daily dose of magnesium sulfate, dissolved in warm water. Luckily, since this isn’t totally new for me (it’s not my first Mayr cure), I don’t have to take the strong, very bitter tasting Epsom salts. My gut seems to tune into the cure faster than I do and started dutifully rumbling the moment I set foot in the resort. “That’s a great sign and not unusual at all,” laughs the doctor. “Our gut has a kind of memory and really works almost like a second brain.” An oil pulling session is also part of my new morning routine and something I’ve never tried before. It involves taking a teaspoonful of oil and swishing it around your mouth for a few minutes to strengthen the gums and get rid of the toxins that have accumulated in your mouth over night. Because my metabolic analysis turned out positive, meaning that my body burns calories optimally, my goal – unlike many Mayrlife customers such as actress Rebel Wilson, who lost masses of weight here and has been coming back every year since – is not to lose weight, but to boost my vitality and find new sources of energy to rebuilt my immune system. Because I normally love doing lots of different types of exercise, my doctor has some very different advice for me: “Slow down. No cardio. Take it easy for the next few days. Keep yourself warm and just relax!”
I’m supposed to drink lots of tea – which is easy considering all the kinds there are to choose from at the tea bar – and go for walks, but my doctor advises me not to use the cryotherapy chamber, where the body is “bathed”
with temperatures around 110 degrees below zero to combat inflammation. “The infrared sauna would be much better for you. It’s all about warmth for you.”
As a result, my cure plan looks like this: My first appointment is one of three vitamin B12 injections in the lower abdomen to help rebuilt the strength of my nervous system. After that I settle down in an armchair for a session of hypoxi training. For about 40 minutes, I’m administered air containing varying levels of oxygen via an oxygen mask. The goal is to charge the mitochondria – the miniature power plants in our cells – with energy. Because I’d assumed that this altitude training would require me to exercise, I turned up in my sports outfit. “No,” laughs the medical assistant, covering me up with a woolen blanket, “this is a passive training method. Just lean back and relax.” After the very first session, I feel overcome with a wave of fresh strength.
During meals, I get to know the other guests at my table, all of them extremely pleasant. There’s an English lady who wants to lose weight and struggles with inflammation in her joints, and a woman from Brazil who’s finding relief for her chronically inflamed skin. We keep admiring how delicious and varied the meals are, and how beautifully arranged. At Mayrlife, every guest really does get a diet tailored to their own personal needs.
Before my goat butter applications – a treatment that draws toxins out of the skin – I arrange with one of the other guests to take a stroll round Altaussee Lake (one of the locations used in the James Bond “Spectre” movie). We are delighted by the views, make it our daily routine and decide to organize a group jump into the lake – an absolute must! It’s November – so a cold four degrees – but we’re all proud and happy afterwards. After spending seven days here, I’m sleeping much better and feel like my batteries are now fully charged. Well rested and full of vitality, I return home.

When the evening sun reflects off the steel construction, the villa shines in a golden glow.
He is undoubtedly one the most influential architects of our time: Born in France in 1945, Jean Nouvel has shaped many of our cities with spectacular buildings over the course of his 50-year career. He has created more than 200 architectural marvels around the world – including renowned projects like the Lyon Opera House, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the National Museum of Qatar. The private retreat Villa Maeterlinck on the Côte d’Azur also bears his inimitable signature.
Nouvel launched his architectural career in the 1970s with the founding of his Paris office. The “Institut du Monde Arabe”, which he completed in Paris in 1987 after several years of construction, brought Nouvel international renown for the first time. He went on to realise some extraordinary buildings with enormous budgets, particularly in the Gulf states. In 2008, he was awarded the most prestigious accolade in architecture: the Pritzker Prize. The jury recognised his “perseverance, imagination and exuberance, with particular emphasis on his insatiable drive to creative experimentation.” Creativity and inventiveness can translate into many forms in Nouvel’s work. The National Museum of Qatar is originally inspired by a desert flower; the spectacular glazed façade of the Institut du monde arabe has blinds that open and close depending on the angle of the sun. When it came to the 34-storey residential tower “One Central Park” in Sydney, Nouvel opted for vertical gardens, with foliage covering the façade thanks to the steel cables installed.
Design elements from previous projects like these can be found in the Villa Maeterlinck in the exclusive Mont Boron neighbourhood of Nice. Just 20 minutes from Monaco and 15 from Nice Airport, the villa lies nestled away on the cliffs of the Côte d’Azur. The old port of Nice is within walking distance from here. The magnificent stainless steel and glass construction was designed by Jean Nouvel in 2015. It borders onto another prestigious property: the
Palais Maeterlinck. It was once home to Count Maurice Maeterlinck, hence its name. The historic building has since been transformed into luxurious residences.
Nouvel’s design for Villa Maeterlinck is distinctly subtle and discreet: it is hard to imagine what masterpiece lies behind the main gates. The front entrance to the property is on the roof level, which is entirely green with foliage. A funicular and steps lead to the two residential floors, which span 550 square metres in total and boast four bedroom suites, four bathrooms and a beautiful living area. The centrepiece and highlight of the villa is the 40-metre-long living room. Four doors open to the rear of this space onto a patio with plants growing down from its walls, filled with fauna. Along the front elevation, a vast glazed frontage can be retracted, as though “floating”, and connecting the room almost entirely with the outside space.
This south-facing elevation opens to a teak terrace running the entire length of the living room. It perpetuates the pervading sense of infinity, looking out towards the Mediterranean and the horizon. Partially covered and shaded by the steel structure, this outdoor space also boasts an 18-metre pool to the southwest, and panoramic views of the vast blue expanse beyond. The sunshine can be enjoyed here right through until pre-dinner drinks in the early evening. Minimalist outdoor furniture designed by Paola Lenti provides a pop of colour to perfect the scene.
All living spaces, along with the kitchen, bedroom suites and bathrooms were designed using the finest materials. The stainless steel construction sets the tone for the interiors, with eye-catching ceiling beams integrating the lighting concept. The steely coolness of this structure is juxtaposed by warm tones and dark woods in the panelling and premium fixtures throughout. Jean Nouvel designed the bathrooms in Corian, with elegant fittings by Dornbracht.
The 8,600-square-metre grounds feature stone steps that lead down to the coast, with access to the sea. The landscape architect François Navarro took the concept created by French garden designer Gilles Clément to bring a garden to life on the clifftop, unifying the sea and sky. The Mediterranean greenery forms a harmonious contrast with the roofscape – with its grey tones of concrete, metal and stainless steel, and the tropical wood.

Wooden Giant
Africa’s tallest hybrid timber high-rise will soon be going up on the island of Zanzibar. The flagship project Burj Zanzibar aims to set standards for sustainable architecture.
Ninety-six meters tall and constructed mostly of wood, the tower will contain 266 residential units on 28 floors. It will be built in Fumba Town, an eco-city created on the drawing board. Construction of the hybrid tower, the first of its kind to be built on African soil, is scheduled to begin in early 2024 and will cost a record $27.5 million. Inside the building with its honeycomb-like facade there will be a mix of studio apartments, one-and two-bedroom apartments and penthouses with planted balconies and green roof gardens. The “vertical green village” was designed by Berlin-based OMT Architects in collaboration with Birk Heilmeyer und Frenzel Architekten and Knippershelbig for the investor CPS Live.
Apart from its steel-reinforced concrete core, the building will primarily use timber technology, partly imported from Europe. “We want to use mainly local resources in the future, but this is only possible to a limited extent today. Tanzania has a sustainable forestry sector but not the necessary industry or infrastructure. The aim of our work is to create demand and promote the use of local timber as a building material for the future,” says Leander Moons, cofounder of OMT Architects, who has lived in Africa. Besides the Burj Zanzibar, OMT Architects are building affordable apartments, townhouses and a community sports club in Fumba Town.
